“As I write this I’d like to
thank all our members for the
considerable time and effort
they put into The Fellowship”
Firstly, a Happy New Year to all our members – The Fellowship
calendar kicked off with a flying start at London’s fabulous
location – the Cumberland Hotel. The Fellowship welcomed a
record number of Members and their guests as they were
treated to a truly iconic evening – never have we seen such
talent working alongside each other – too many to mention here
– for more news look within the magazine. An evening
wonderfully orchestrated by Ann Herman and her team.
Congratulations must go to The Fellowship’s brand new F.A.M.E.
Team – Kate Mulcahy from Lisa Shepherd, Kathryn Dartnell from
Haringtons, Chris Appleton from George’s and Indira
Schauwecker from Toni & Guy. What a year they have got to look
forward to under the management of Dawn Bryant and Art
direction of Jonny Engstrom.
The F.A.M.E. Team have already undergone a fabulous 2-day
teach-in from the key execs at Wella on the subject of
presentation skills, plus a day with Mr Errol Douglas M.B.E. –
no less – hosted by the Goldwell Academy. February finds them
making their debut presentation as a team at the HABB Ball on
9th February and working with the award winning photographer
Andrew O’Toole. What a fabulous opportunity these guys have.
Our very own Carol Spencer and Nigel Sillis flew The Fellowship
flag on a recent visit to bonny Scotland with a view to updating
members and meeting new – highlighting the attributes of being a
member of The Fellowship for British Hairdressing, not forgetting
the ClubStar membership which now has over 70 members.

Project X kicks off under the auspices of Robert Eaton and Aaron
Blondell whilst the Colour Project led by Toni & Guy’s Jo O’Neill
and Philosophy’s Mark Creed have 8 successful applicants starting
in March.
The 12 month program of exciting colour focused events has
been developed that incorporates educational seminars, photo
shoots and colour master classes all delivered by 9 world
renowned colourists including Trevor Sorbie’s Eduardo and
Carolyn Newman from Charles Worthington, with guest
appearances promised throughout the course.
As I write this I’d like to thank all our members for the
considerable time and effort they put into The Fellowship – don’t
forget we’d love to hear your news for The Fellowship Magazine
and receive photo’s of your latest collections.
Look forward to seeing you all at Fashion Focus in Manchester –
again we have a tremendous line-up and it’s a date that our
northern members simply cannot miss.
Finally a diary date... April 20th will be Presidents Night... I’ve got a
few ideas tucked up my sleeve – I’ll share these with you next time!

challenge of getting here and I can’t wait for next year. I’m proud,
privileged and really looking forward to being the only boy in the gang -
how amazing to have three girls to look after! Hopefully the combination
of skills will mean our ideas will compliment each other’s perfectly - we
all have such different talents and strengths. I’m brimming with ideas
and I really want to put my stamp on hairdressing. Eventually, I’d love to
be an inspiration and ambassador to other hairdressers in the the way
I’ve looked up to people.”

It’s third time lucky for Kathryn, who has auditioned twice before to
vie for one of the coveted places on The Fellowship for British
Hairdressing F.A.M.E. Team. She’s been hairdressing for 11 years and
now enjoys the title of Art Director at award winning salon group,
Harington’s at her Winchester base. Her effortless style is what
makes her such an obvious choice to be part of The Fellowship for
British Hairdressing’s 2009 F.A.M.E. Team. “Hairdressing is my
absolute passion and I’m so lucky to be doing a job which I enjoy so
much. I love the technical side of hairdressing and also session styling.
My passion for fashion means I love doing the shows. I’ve done London
and New York fashion week, which were both fantastic. Of course, I’d
love to be British Hairdresser of the Year one day but right now, my
biggest ambition is to get a front cover on Vogue Magazine. Being
selected for the F.A.M.E. Team opens up so many fantastic avenues for
me I can’t wait to get started.”

This guy has so much passion and enthusiasm for his trade, and
combined with his amazing talent it’s no surprise The Fellowship for
British Hairdressing’s prestigious panel of judges of the F.A.M.E Team
2009 snapped him up. His employers at George’s salon in Leicester
have watched him grow and develop an amazing talent and he is
grateful to them for encouraging him to seize this amazing
opportunity with both hands. “I’ve dreamed about being part of the
F.A.M.E. Team for years – I can’t actually believe I’m here. I enjoyed the
Katie loves to create beautiful hair – I don’t want to produce weird
and wonderful styles, I want people to think my creations are
beautiful. However, I did worry that my designs were too simple and
not ‘way out ‘enough and all my hard work would go to waste –
that’s why today came as such a shock!” Based at the Lisa Shepherd
Birmingham salon, Katie couldn’t believe it when her name was
announced at The Fellowship Awards. “My screams must have been
heard for miles. I was so emotional – the whole election process is very
tough and it’s such a big relief that I’m here”. Like all the winners of
this years Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s F.A.M.E. Team, Katie
says her biggest inspiration has been her boss, award winning
hairdresser Lisa Shepherd. “Lisa’s not just my boss, she’s my biggest
ambassador and has been there for me throughout this whole election
process. The biggest achievement for me would to be recognised for
what I do. I’m going to have so much fun while learning more and more
from the others on the F.A.M.E. Team”.
Indira Schauwecker, 27, Capricorn (the funky chick)
Indira wants her styles to be striking but not too commercial. Indira
enjoys teaching student hairdressers at the London Toni & Guy
Academy, as well as maintaining a client base at the Covent Garden
salon. Indira is inspired and was selected for the F.A.M.E. Team by
Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck. “I’m so lucky to work at Toni & Guy. They’ve
helped me achieve everything I have so far and the encouragement and
support I get from the team is amazing”. Swiss born Indira has found
British hairdressing very different from the Swiss style. “Everybody
here seems to have their own individual style but in Switzerland people
are often led by what they deem to be fashionable as opposed to what
suits them. I prefer to create edgy styles as opposed to classic. One day
I would like to give back all the support I have received by giving
someone all the encouragement and support that I’ve been to privileged
to receive, so that they can grow and develop like I am doing now”.

The Sorcerer and
The first Fellowship Masterclass event of the year was a huge
success with well over 300 in the audience. The event entitled
“The Sorcerer and The Apprentice” was compered by Steven
Goldsworthy, President of The Fellowship and Mark Creed,
Vice-President and Chancellor and was held in London’s
prestigious Cumberland Hotel.
The Masterclass was designed as a unique opportunity to see
presentations from the very best in the industry working closely with
their protégés. The format was informal with a very special workshop
environment. The amazing line-up of featured stylists working side by
side providing an ‘up close’ opportunity to observe and ask questions.
These truly aspirational presentations were in two sections and the
participants included.

Another very successful night with teams from as
The quality of work varied but it was generally of a high standard.
All 14 teams kept to the correct time frame. The interview with
Daniel and James Galvin was well received and the audience
enjoyed the evening all of which was superbly compered by Steven
Goldsworthy and Andrew Sutherland.
Clubstar member Luke from the Hair Advice Centre said “I love all
these events and the fact that I can come for a relatively small outlay is
even better. Tonight’s show was so inspirational and the fact that so
many teams are willing to share their ideas is brilliant. I cant wait for
the next one!!”
The facilities at L’Oréal were once again very good and the sound
man, despite not realising that he had to do more than just put the
CD player on was so helpful. Thanks to Ann for organising another
great evening.

OF THE YEAR
Its GOODBYE from Project X students 2008 and HELLO to these, the new kids on the Project X
block for 2009 - looking forward to following their journey throughout the year in this magazine
Former Junior of the Year and runner-up in this year’s Clothes
Show Live Young Hairdresser of the Year competition, 20 year
old Leah Walton of The Colour Room is relishing her role as a
member on The Fellowship’s 2009 Project X course.
Having just returned from the Goldwell Academy in London for the
first module of the exclusive twelve month course, which has been
described as “the ultimate hairdressing finishing school”, an exuberant
Leah said “Already, having completed just the first session with the
mentors and coaches for Project X, I feel I have learnt so much. It was
an action packed day focusing on presenting yourself and building a
unique PR profile as an up and coming star of British hairdressing.”
Leah added “It was a real thrill to be working so closely with people from
the industry I really admire like Robert Eaton and PR guru, Harriet
Evans. The whole day made leaving Manchester at the crack of dawn to
travel to London very worthwhile!”. Leah is now fired up and counting
the days until the next Project X session which takes place in
February.

THE POWER TO PRESENT

Members of The Fellowship’s 2009 F.A.M.E. Team enjoyed a two
day tailor-made coaching course on the power to present by
Wella’s top tutors.
The course attended by Katie Mulcahy of Lisa Shepherd and Kathryn
Dartnell of Haringtons and myself was a great success – if not a nerve
wracking experience. We attended the course, prepared with a
presentation and it was amazing how different each member of the
team’s approach to this task was! A very interesting opportunity to
discuss in detail the vital points of what makes for a good and bad
presentation – we went forth and each conquered individual fears
and came out as stronger presenters.
On behalf of the F.A.M.E. Team I would like to thank Wella for this
experience held at Wella World Studios – we would recommend it
to *every hairdresser as a fundamental part of their training for we all
say, we feel far more confident in ourselves.
There was a phrase that our mentors used which was very poignant and
encouraging: “We are not born presenters, but we can all learn to be.”

CONQUER MOSCOW!
Fellowship members took Moscow by storm with their superb
hairdressing skills when they presented models at the first ever
Russian Hairdressing Awards.
Having previously judged the photographic work of the Russian
hairdressers in London the judges were asked to travel to Moscow
to supply the icing on the cake by presenting models at the Russian
Awards ceremony held in the Kremlin.
Presenting the very best of British Hairdressing were:
Steven Goldsworthy, Nicky Clarke, Beverly C, Errol Douglas,
Akin Konizi, Angelo Seminara, Phil Smith, Charlie Taylor,

We learned so
much from Errol,
especially in relation
to preparation.
He made everything
look so easy.
What a fabulous day – my head is still spinning! The four of us
met at the incredible Goldwell Academy where our host and
mentor for the day was Errol Douglas M.B.E.! Presenting a model
with two completely diversifying looks was just amazing –
watching Errol work step by step all the way to perfection.
We learned so much from him, especially in relation to
preparation. He made everything look so easy.
What was most interesting however was Errol took time to list every
single member of the F.A.M.E. Team and literally chart their career to
date – himself included! There have been some amazing names –
including my very own boss Lisa Shepherd and Tim Scott-Wright –
so I know we are following in some very sound footsteps – and
should take advantage of every single opportunity we are presented
with.
We took the opportunity to brainstorm our forthcoming venture
which is the F.A.M.E. Team presentation at the H.A.B.B. ball on 9th
February – Errol laid our fears to rest and spent a long time talking us
through our presentation – what an amazing guy!

My New Hair
A look back at a very special event introduced by President
Steven Goldsworthy, for Fellowship Members had a treat with
an up close and personal tuition session from Fellowship Patron
of Honour Trevor Sorbie whilst they learnt from him the ins and
outs of wig fitting and customising it for the individual person
during Trevors ‘my new hair’ seminar at the L’Oréal Technical
Centre London.
This seminar was aimed specifically to help folk suffering from the
dreadful disease of cancer but there are many other folk out there
who will be grateful for receiving such a psychological boost to their
esteem as well as enhancing their looks.
As you can see Trevor even demonstrated the difference added
hair can make on himself. Overall verdict; a very enlightening and
informative educational evening with members leaving enthused
about the project.

Award winning hairdressing has arrived in
Cirencester, Gloucester. The fabulous
salon situated at 37 Dyer Street spans
over two floors – offering a top to toe
menu of premium haircare and beauty
treats. The salon is run by award winning
Vicki Turner. Vicki has benefited from
learning from a major player on the UK
hairdressing scene – Steven Goldsworthy
of the Goldsworthy’s salon in Swindon. Vicki has shadowed her
mentor Steven from salon to show to shoot over the past 8 years.
Now it’s clearly her time! In 2006 Vicky won the much coveted
Wales & South West Hairdresser of the Year, and in 2007 and 2008
has been nominated for the title. In 2007 Vicki was also a finalist in
the national Clothes Show Live! Young Hairdresser of the Year
competition. In 2008 Vicki was picked from over 60 entrants to
become a member of The Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s
F.A.M.E. Team for 2008.
It’s now time to settle down with her own salon. A self confessed
‘total hairdressing junkie’, Vicki’s particular passion is classically dressed
long hair with a contemporary fashion influence; which echoes what’s
happening in the fashion industry right now.

them was fantastic”. Miranda added “I’ve just done a video with
Pendulum and also worked backstage with the lads at their gig at
Brixton academy. I’m loving it!”

MBE has been working his magic
on newly crowned Model of the
Year Jourdan Dunn after she visited
his salon for a style for the British
Fashion Awards. Errol, who
specialises in both European and
Afro hair has himself just entered
the British Hairdressing Awards’ Hall of Fame for being a three-time
winner of Afro Hairdresser of the Year, said: “Jourdan is an amazingly
grounded person - she’s passionate about what she does and has
catapulted into the superleague. She’s being hailed as the next Naomi
Campbell, and it’s great for Afro Caribbean girls to be recognised by the
fashion industry.”
In this separate item we congratulate Errol Douglas on being named
Cosmopolitan¹s Ultimate Man of the Year 2008. Renowned for his
stunning photographic work, or styling the hair of celebs such as Uma
Thurman, Kelly Rowland and Emilia Fox. - But Errol isn¹t just
interested in A-list styling, for charity work has always been very close
to his heart!

Desmond Murray relcoates to Atherton
Cox in London’s Marylebone
The New Year has seen Desmond Murray
relocate both his salon and team to the
fabulous 3,000 square foot salon Atherton
Cox in London’s Marylebone.
Desmond comments: “I have a fabulous
working history with both Lisa Atherton and
Paul Cox and I am delighted to be working
alongside them again. I had been looking to relocate the salon for some
time – as we needed more space in which to grow and premises were
nigh on impossible to find. When meeting up socially with Lisa and Paul
we discussed the proposition – and I really do feel that this is the perfect
solution for both myself and my team.”
Paul Cox joint Managing director of Atherton Cox comments: “We
have been in talks with Desmond for some time and we welcome him
back with open arms.”
The hob Salon plays host to ‘Paris
Hilton’s British Best Friend’ show
The hob salon situated on Camden Lock, played host to the
infamous Hilton Hotel heiress for the launch of the new TV series
‘Paris Hilton’s British Best Friend’.
Swapping her jet set LA lifestyle for a taste of London life, Paris is
joined by a gaggle of potential friends as they are put through their
paces to test their ambition and determination to become
inaugurated as ‘Paris’ British Best Friend’.
Camden Town was brought to a standstill as Paris, spent her day
filming the new series. hob were invited by ITV2 to makeover the
show’s contestants and the team were only too delighted to fulfil the
request to transform them all for a red carpet event.
Liz O’Mahony takes on the Arctic Circle
Challenge for charity
In March this year, businesswoman and
Fellowship Council Member Liz O’Mahony’ is
courageously taking on a charity challenge that
is well out of her usual comfort zone. Liz has
spent her life developing her successful
business, Vogue Hair and Beauty Salon in
Leamington Spa and has become accustomed
to the comforts that life has afforded her.
Liz is seen as a perfectly groomed and glamorous stylist and many of
her clients cannot imagine her in a situation that will not allow her the
luxury to care about how she looks. But Liz is determined to face this
challenge of endurance and has been training three times a week
with ex mountaineer Ed, who has developed a programme that will
help Liz to achieve the level of fitness required to meet the demands
of the Arctic Circle Challenge where she will face one of the harshest
environments on earth, with sub zero temperatures, high winds and
heavy snow and will endeavour to keep control of six husky dogs
that will help her with her seven day, 200km Arctic Challenge. Liz
will not have her usual comforts of a warm cosy bed, a hairdryer or a
television, but undeterred by this she will endure the challenge to
raise money for Cure Leukaemia.

Southern Hairdresser of the Year Rae
Palmer cut the ribbon at the official
opening of the Highbury Arundel Centre
in Portsmouth. Rae is passionate about
education and vocational training for
young people, and launched the
Schwarzkopf HABB Graduate competition last year to help link colleges
with the industry and contribute to training within the local community.
Says Rae, “The more we look after our local students, the better our
future salon stylists and eventually business owners will be. It’s good for the
community, good for the hairdressing industry, so everyone wins!”

Jamie Stevens, Art Director at Errol Douglas
and Creative Ambassador for GHD, has given
Brit actress Emma Pierson a makeover at the
salon in Knightsbridge. Emma, star of hotel
Babylon and Little Dorit, is a regular client of
Jamie’s, who’s also tended the tresses of Elle
McPherson, Kylie and Stella McCartney, as well
as Gok Wan and Christian Slater.

LA, so I cut in some layers to give it more volume and a bigger, bouncier
feel. After drying it I used some velcro rollers, and finished it off using
ghd stylers to do the classic ribbon curl technique.”

So far this year all we have heard in the media is all
about doom and gloom, and I can assure you all,
that had you had a business in the 70’s, this is
nothing as bad as then, what with no electricity for
12 hours a day for 3 days a week. What we have is
a hyper critical media without foundation. Yes, things
are tough, but when haven’t they been?
Competition for clients has, and is, always difficult.
That is why The Fellowship is so important. With all our knowledge and
artistic skills which are freely available to members, from the best of the
best, there should be no reason to worry.
The Fellowship offers so much knowledge and education via Project X,
the Colour Project, and now for your younger members of staff,
ClubStar, as well as our events. The cream will always rise to the top, so
do not stop investing in training, motivation and education. Education is
your guaranteed future, and you get it from The Fellowship. So far this
year, we have had a magnificent Masterclass at the prestigious venue of
the Cumberland Hotel, London, and a great Members Night at our
Diamond Sponsors venue at L’Oréal in Hammersmith; both sold out. I
look forward to attending our Fashion Focus event at the Lowry in
Salford Quays, Manchester in March and seeing you all at our AGM ,
where the future of The Fellowship is to be decided, which will be of
importance to all the membership, and Award Winners Night at the
Goldwell Academy, Mayfair, London, for an informal evening of
education and presentations on Monday 30th March.
