A traveller’s tale
In 1993, an Italian journalist decided not
to travel by plane for a whole year. He
worked for a big newspaper and he
travelled all around the world to do his job,
but for a year he didn’t go by plane. He
He lived in Thailand, and every year he
two weeks on the train, he knew it was
not far now! He was back in Europe.
His friends thought it was crazy but he
enjoyed his year without planes. He saw
lots of places and met lots of people. He
remembered how big the world is.
A traveller’s tale
His friends thought it was crazy but he
Dad isn’t working, so he’s taking us for a
so we’re going karting. We’re spending the
and then in the afternoon we’re racing!
My sister isn’t coming, because she
doesn’t like karting, but in the evening we’re
Have you got the timetable,
Francine?
Yes, here it is.
What have we got on
Mondays?
Well, we’ve got assembly at
nine o’clock, then the first
lesson is Maths. That’s at
9.15. Then at ten we’ve got
English.
What time’s the break?
At 10.45, a quarter to eleven.
Then we’ve got double P.E.,
from five past eleven to
lunch time.
And when’s lunch?
Urm... it’s at half past twelve.
The afternoon starts at two
o’clock, with Technology,
then we’ve got Science at
2.45 and the last lesson is
French, at half past three.
And when does that finish?
At ten past four, of course.
Unit 2, exercise 8
HEAD Good morning, you must be
Emma Harding, the new girl.
Is that right?
EMMA Yes.
HEAD When did you arrive in
Manchester?
EMMA Last Thursday.
HEAD Good. I hope everything’s OK.
EMMA Yes, thanks.
HEAD I’ve got a few questions to
ask you.
EMMA Right.
HEAD Now, where were you born?
EMMA I was born in London.
HEAD And when were you born?
EMMA On the 5th of September 1989.
HEAD The 5th of September 1989.
Good. And where do you live?
EMMA 14 Park Street.
HEAD Thank you, Emma. Your
class is 4A ...
EMMA OK ...
HEAD And you start lessons
tomorrow at 9.15. Now, have
you got any questions?
EMMA Yes, I wanted to know how I
can get to school from Park
Street.
HEAD That’s easy. You take the
number 12 bus. The journey
takes about 10 minutes. The
bus stop is outside the school.
Unit 3, exercise 8
GEMMA Hi, Paul, are you coming to
my party on Saturday?
PAUL Yes, I am. But how do I get
there from the train station?
GEMMA It isn’t far. You turn left when
you come out of the station.
PAUL Turn left, OK ...
GEMMA Walk along to the traffic
lights near the post office.
Cross the road at the lights
and turn right into Castle
Street. Go along Castle
Street. The hospital is on
your right, but go straight on.
PAUL Straight on at the hospital,
OK ...
GEMMA Take the second road on the
left. Our house is the big
house opposite the church.
PAUL Mm. OK.
GEMMA It’s about 10 minutes on foot.
PAUL Oh. I don’t like walking. Is
there a bus?
GEMMA No, there isn’t. But you can
take a taxi.
PAUL A taxi? No thanks, I’ll walk.
See you on Saturday!
Unit 4, exercise 7
MUM Oh, there’s a lot of work to
do. Who can help me?
WILLIAM I’ll help you, Mum. What do
you want me to do?
MUM You can clean the kitchen.
WILLIAM All right. Oh, Mum ...
MUM Yes?
WILLIAM Can I go to Jamie’s for a
sleepover tonight?
MUM You have to do the washingup
first!
WILLIAM I don’t want to do the
washing-up. I don’t like
washing-up. Can’t Dad do it?
MUM He’s in bed. He doesn’t feel
well.
WILLIAM I don’t think Dad is ill. He’s
watching the match on
television. I think he’ll be all
right after the match.
MUM Well, I don’t know. Perhaps
Dad is OK, but I’m getting a
headache.
WILLIAM Shall I get you an aspirin,
Mum?
MUM No. I don’t want an aspirin. I
want some help with the
housework.
Unit 5, exercise 7
were you?
BOY No, I was born in London.
MAN
BOY
MAN
BOY
And your mother?
My mother was born in
Cornwall. So she was happy
to
go back there.
What about you, Robin? Do
you like living in Helston?
Yes, I do. I’ve got lots of new
friends, and there are lots of
things to do. And it isn’t as
dangerous as London. I can
go anywhere by bike. In
London I went by bus or
underground.
So Helston is better than
London?
Oh, I didn’t say that. It’s
healthier and quieter. But I
still like London. It’s more
exciting.
Unit 6, exercise 7
ASSISTANT Good morning. Can I help
you?
BOY Yes please, I want to buy a
shirt.
ASSISTANT What size are you?
BOY Er.... 15, I think.
ASSISTANT And what colour would you
BOY
like?
Well, my favourite colour is
blue. But I’ve got a blue
shirt. Have you got
anything green?
ASSISTANT How about this? It’s one of
the shirts in the sale. It’s
only £12.
BOY
Er... it doesn’t look very
fashionable. I want the shirt
for a party.
ASSISTANT Oh, I see. Well, what about
this light brown one? It’s
very attractive.
BOY Mmm. I don’t really like
brown.
ASSISTANT Or there’s this purple
BOY
one....
That looks better. Can I try
it on?
ASSISTANT Yes, certainly. (fade out)
(Later)
ASSISTANT How does it fit?
BOY
ASSISTANT £18.
BOY
It’s perfect. How much is it?
£18. I think that’s all right.
Can I phone my parents to
check?
ASSISTANT Of course. You can use our
phone.
Unit 7, exercise 7
Good morning, everyone. I’ve got
some more information about our
school trip to France in May. So
please listen and take notes. You can
ask questions when I finish.
We’re leaving on May the 7th, that’s a
Saturday, at 7 o’clock in the morning,
by coach to London. In London we’re
taking the Eurostar train to Paris, and
from Paris we take another train to
Orléans, where our exchange school
is. We arrive at about 6 o’clock in the
evening, and the teachers and
students of the school are meeting us
at the station. You are all staying with
a different French family, and you are
coming home on Friday the 14th.
You don’t have to take any special
clothes for the trip, but a French
phrase book is a good idea, and
remember you have to have a valid
passport to go to France. Another
thing ... the cost. The total cost of the
trip is £130 per student. You don’t
have to pay this until April, but you
have to bring a deposit of £20 to
school next week. Is that clear? Now,
are there any questions?
Unit 8, exercise 7
MUM What have you got there,
Vicky?
VICKY It’s an invitation for Jack’s
party.
MUM That’s nice. When is it?
VICKY It’s on June the 1st.
MUM So what’s happening? Are
you all going out for a pizza
again?
VICKY No, no, the party’s in his
garden.
MUM That’s nice. I hope the
weather stays fine.
VICKY He’s having a barbecue. I
love barbecues!
MUM And who’s cooking? His
mum, I suppose.
VICKY No. Jack is! And his dad’s
helping him.
MUM How many people are going?
VICKY About 15, I think.
MUM You must take a present. A
book, perhaps, or a CD.
VICKY I know what he wants, Mum.
The new Star Wars video.
MUM I see.
VICKY Can you give me the money
to buy it?
MUM Well... OK, yes, I suppose I can.
