<strong>National</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Schooling</strong><br />

will be issued a Grade Sheet – cum<br />

Certificate. <strong>The</strong> NIOS so far has awarded<br />

certificates to about 44 lakh candidates<br />

through this assessment earlier held on<br />

20 th Aug 2010 & 6 th March <strong>2011</strong>.<br />

NIOS Participates in World DIDAC<br />

India <strong>2011</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Schooling</strong><br />

(NIOS) participated in the India Didactic<br />

Association’s Conference “Global<br />

Education & Skill Summit <strong>2011</strong> -<br />

Moving to the Next Level Together”<br />

which focussed on the need for skill<br />

formation in the context <strong>of</strong> rapidly<br />

changing technology which demands<br />

formation <strong>of</strong> multiple skills, transfer <strong>of</strong><br />

learning and ability to continue to unlearn<br />

and learn and focus on being a responsible<br />

citizen.<br />

<strong>The</strong> NIOS utilised this opportunity to<br />

showcase its innovative schemes and<br />

programmes as well as its Self<br />

Instructional Material in the partner<br />

event,“WORLDDIDAC INDIA <strong>2011</strong>”, an<br />

international exhibition partnered by the<br />

NIOS Stall in World DIDAC <strong>2011</strong><br />

World Didac Association (Switzerland) ,<br />

BESA (British Education Suppliers<br />

Association) and DIDACTA (Germany)<br />

which are the largest associations for<br />

Education and work closely with the<br />

Education Ministries <strong>of</strong> their respective<br />

countries for shaping the education<br />

system.<br />

Held from 28 <strong>September</strong> to 30 <strong>September</strong>,<br />

<strong>2011</strong> at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, this is<br />

one <strong>of</strong> the largest events for educational<br />

supplies, training, technology and didactic<br />

material, which had the presence <strong>of</strong><br />

prominent exhibitors from India and more<br />

than 15 countries, showcasing their latest<br />

and innovative education and training<br />

solutions, methodology and technology<br />

that aid learning, teaching and skill<br />

improvement.<br />

Work Plan Agreement between<br />

NIOS and MCGRAW-Hill Education<br />

SPSA (MCGRAW-HILL EDUCATION) and<br />

the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Schooling</strong><br />

(NIOS) have entered into a work plan<br />

agreement to provide a six month<br />

Certificate Course in Retail Sales and<br />

Services to eligible students through its<br />

study centres.<br />

While the NIOS is mandated to cater to<br />

the educational needs <strong>of</strong> school drop-outs,<br />

working adults, housewives and the<br />

disadvantaged section <strong>of</strong> society, SPSA<br />

(MCGRAW-HILL EDUCATION), a global<br />

leader in education publishing and<br />

services, also delivers learning solutions,<br />

testing and assessment services to<br />

educational institutions and training<br />

organisations across the world.<br />

<strong>The</strong> McGraw-Hill courses provide industryspecific,<br />

job-oriented content in a blended<br />

learning environment that gives students<br />

the knowledge, skills and attitude required<br />

to secure entry-level positions.<br />

As a part <strong>of</strong> this agreement, SPSA<br />

(MCGRAW-HILL EDUCATION) will<br />

organise a “Training Exercise” for the<br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> study centres for this course<br />

by conducting regular training programs<br />

on latest market trends, teaching<br />

methodologies and improvement in course<br />

content.<br />

<strong>The</strong> NIOS will carry out a final assessment<br />

<strong>of</strong> the eligible students on the basis <strong>of</strong><br />

their performance and a joint certificate <strong>of</strong><br />

SPSA (MCGRAW-HILL EDUCATION) and<br />

NIOS will be issued on successful<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> the course.<br />

NIOS Examinations commence on<br />

October 12 th , <strong>2011</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Open</strong> <strong>Schooling</strong><br />

(NIOS), an autonomous organisation<br />

under the Ministry <strong>of</strong> Human Resource<br />

Development (MHRD), Government <strong>of</strong><br />

India and the largest open schooling<br />

system in the world holds examinations<br />

twice a year, in April and October.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Secondary and Senior Secondary<br />

examinations <strong>of</strong> the NIOS have<br />

commenced on October 12 th , <strong>2011</strong>. A total<br />

number <strong>of</strong> 2,96,000 learners are expected<br />

to appear for these examinations through<br />

1,175 examination centres spread across<br />

the country as well as eight examination<br />

centres set up in the Middle East and<br />

Nepal.<br />

While 1,37,724 learners are expected to<br />

appear in the Secondary examination,<br />

1,58,276 learners will appear for the Senior<br />

Secondary examination. This is in<br />

comparison to a total <strong>of</strong> only 2,70,440<br />

learners who appeared in the October 2010<br />

exam.<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> the exam-related information, the<br />

detailed date sheet for the October/<br />

November <strong>2011</strong> examinations as well as<br />

the hall tickets <strong>of</strong> those learners who have<br />

not received them are available on the<br />

Teachers' Day Celebrations<br />

In commemoration <strong>of</strong> Teachers’ Day, a<br />

debate competition was organised for the<br />

NIOS learners on 5 th <strong>September</strong>, <strong>2011</strong>- at<br />

the Adolescent Friendly Centre (AFC),<br />

Bhubaneswar.<br />

<strong>The</strong> learners were divided into two groups,<br />

with one group required to debate in favour<br />

<strong>of</strong> the topic while the other would opine<br />

against the topic. About 15 minutes were<br />

allowed for a group discussion. This was<br />

followed by a 10 minute presentation by<br />

each group.<strong>The</strong> parameters for judgement<br />

included full participation <strong>of</strong> the learners,<br />

logical presentation, time bound<br />

presentation and the style <strong>of</strong> presentation.<br />

In addition, the participation <strong>of</strong> the other<br />

learners in the form <strong>of</strong> raising queries were<br />

also monitored as prizes for participation<br />

was another facet <strong>of</strong> the programme.<br />

Mr. GS Mohapatra, an eminent<br />

educationist <strong>of</strong> Orissa and Mr. RK Rath,<br />

RD, RC, Bhubaneswar joined the<br />

programme during the concluding session.<br />

Mr. Mohapatra addressed the learners and<br />

spoke on the relevance <strong>of</strong> the topics<br />

debated upon with a special emphasis on<br />

NIOS. He later gave away the prizes to<br />

the winners.<br />

<strong>The</strong> participants who debated in favour <strong>of</strong><br />

the topic “Self study materials–An<br />

alternative to Gurus” and the participants<br />

who debated against the topic “Freedom<br />

to Choose Subjects Empowers Youth”<br />

won the prizes. <strong>The</strong> Regional Director also<br />

encouraged the students by stating that<br />

“everyone who participated was a winner”.<br />

Superannuation<br />

Shri. M.S Lamba, Deputy Director<br />

(Admn.), NIOS has retired from the<br />

services <strong>of</strong> NIOS and was accordingly<br />

relieved from his duties w.e.f from 30-<br />

09-<strong>2011</strong>.<br />

Workshop on “Coping With Stress<br />

and Anger”<br />

A workshop on coping with stress and<br />

anger management was organized on 15<br />

<strong>September</strong>, <strong>2011</strong> at Mitra, the<br />

Adolescence Friendly Centre (AFC) set up<br />

in the NIOS Regional Centre,<br />

Bhubaneswar (Orissa).<strong>The</strong> workshop<br />

covered various aspects <strong>of</strong> stress and a<br />

group discussion was held for learners on<br />

“Stress Situations in Everyday Life and<br />

How to Overcome them”.<br />

Audio Video Laboratory (AV Lab)<br />

inaugurated at Mitra<br />

As a special initiative to encourage<br />

learners to learn using audio video material,<br />

an Audio Video Lab was inaugurated by<br />

R.K. Rath, Regional Director, RC,<br />

Bhubaneswar on 15 <strong>September</strong>, <strong>2011</strong> in<br />

the Adolescence Friendly Centre (AFC) in<br />

the NIOS RC, Bhubaneswar. Through this,<br />

learners will be provided with the facility<br />

to access various audio-visual<br />

programmes on academic courses,<br />

vocational courses as well as audio/visual<br />

short films on adolescent issues in the<br />

AFC library.<br />

An Ambition Fulfilled !<br />

Haris KP<br />

Enrolment No. 09000143052<br />

Haris K.P hails from a rural, educationally backward village <strong>of</strong> Perambra in Kozhikode district in Kerala State.<br />

Thanks to the flexible NIOS sytem, Haris could fulfil his childhood ambition <strong>of</strong> pursuing Aeronautical Engineering<br />

by taking admission in the Science Stream after dropping out <strong>of</strong> college. It was only when he was pursuing the<br />

B.Com course after being forced to join the Commerce Stream that he came to know about the NIOS system. This further<br />

enabled him to obtain admission for the B.Tech Course in Computer Science & Engineering in the Cochin University <strong>of</strong><br />

Science & Technology (CUSAT), Kerala through an entrance test.<br />

Presently employed in a S<strong>of</strong>tware Company in Bangalore, Haris plans to join for MS (Aerospace Engineering) at the Brunel<br />

University, London. Haris is also a volleyball player and was adjudged as the best player in an Intercollegiate Tournament<br />

<strong>of</strong> CUSAT in 2009.<br />
