In July 2002 the NOS was re-christened as <strong>National</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Open</strong><br />

Vocational Education Courses <strong>of</strong>fered Catering to the young adult or to<br />
an older person, who wants to find suitable employment and hence wants<br />
to acquire job skills, both NOS and later the <strong>NIOS</strong> paid attention to develop<br />
several vocational education courses as a major course provision.<br />
Vocational education has not had too many takers in the education system<br />
in the country, for a variety <strong>of</strong> cultural factors. <strong>NIOS</strong> is making a special<br />
effort to make this popular. <strong>The</strong> large provision <strong>of</strong> such courses is evidence<br />
<strong>of</strong> the commitment <strong>of</strong> <strong>NIOS</strong> to cater to the Roti Kapda Makkan needs <strong>of</strong><br />
the average citizen <strong>of</strong> our country. <strong>The</strong>se courses vary in duration; <strong>NIOS</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong>fers two year course, one year certificate courses, one year package<br />
courses, one year stand alone certificate courses, six month courses and
