Celebration of International Museum Day
3
Dear Friends of IGRMS and Readers,
It is yet another pleasure presenting the April-June, 2013 issue of the IGRMS
News, the quarterly Newsletter of IGRMS. The activities of the Sangrahalaya
during this quarter were as satisfying as in other quarters in the past. This was
testified by the comments offered by many of our esteemed visitors and wellwishers.
We are immensely gratified by the visit of our beloved Joint Secretary,
Shri Pramod Jain, who had a few good words for all we do at the IGRMS.
The most important celebration of this quarter was the International
Museum Day on the 18th May, 2013. It was celebrated with the opening of a
new Exhibition, a colloquium on the theme decided by the ICOM, facilitating
the museum visit by the differently abled children and senior citizens, the
most popular “Treasure Hunt” programme, and the inauguration of the ‘Exhibit of the Month”. We
are henceforth committed to exhibit a new and culturally significant object for our visitors every
month from about 25,000 objects staked in our specimen store. Our regular field work, collection and
documentation activities were also carried out during this quarter by the members of our staff. We have
added a traditional Limboo House from Sikkim, which is earthquake proof and eco-compatible. We have
conducted several “Do & Learn” Educational programmes and a workshop on traditional ‘Godna’, which is
a dying art form of body decoration in tribal and rural India.
In collaboration with the Zonal Anthropological Museum of the Anthropological Survey of India, Port
Blair, a travelling exhibition was mounted on Island Cultures of India during this quarter, which is still
under display. It has been attracting the attention of thousands of visitors to the Anthropological Museum
of Port Blair.
Our Southern Regional Centre at Mysore has also celebrated the International Museum Day with great
pomp. Several “Do and Learn” Educational programmes were also organized by the Centre during this
quarter.
By the blessings, goodwill and encouragement of our distinguished visitors and dedication of our
staff, we remain committed to delivering on the prime objective of the IGRMS as a premier ethnographic
museum in India, spearheading the New Museum Movement in the country and celebrating its rich
cultural diversity.
Accession No. - 2006.915
Local Name - LANGSHUNG TARENG
Equivalent - A wooden device used for
preparing silk thread
Community - Meitei
Place of Collection - Vilage: Kakmayai,
District: Thoubal,
Manipur
Description :
Traditional technology for weaving textiles are now a days
in vanishing stage, even then it is observed in few parts of
the country among
which Manipur is one
where it is practiced
till date. Textile
weaving tradition
in Manipur is a time
honoured occupation
and turned to an art
due to its intricate
design. It is entirely
the work of women.
They under took
weaving as a part
of their domestic
duties. Girls engaged
into weaving at their
tender age of ten years having mastered over the years and
practice through out their life span. The primary qualification
of a young girl for eligibility to marriage was determined by her
weaving skill. It is said that the growth of the weaving industry
by women is associated with the fact, that Manipur men were
constantly engaged in war and these women supplies them
uniforms and maintained their families by sailing the product of
this industry. Thus each house in Manipur has at least one loom
and considered to be an integral part their household furniture.
The “Langshung Tareng” as in indigenous spinning
device for preparing silk yarn from Cocoon (a stage of silk-worm
forming a covering layer of protein around its body, secreting
through its head). The structure is entirely made of wood. It has
two wheels big one (main wheel), small one (supporting wheel),
an iron rotor for turning thread, a wooden platform serve as
paddle and a cross spinning tool. It is fully operated by muscular
energy of the user. The up and down movement of the paddle
allows the main wheel (fixed to the lower part) to rotate and
subsequently the supporting wheel (fixed to the upper part)
connected by coarse thread belt also rotates their by the rotor
and the connecting point helps to turn the raw cocoon silk into
thread in continuous turns.
Weaving form an important part of India’s Cultural
Heritage. This living art form is in danger of simply dying out due
to invention of machineries. This is why IGRMS has collected this
object for the future generation -P. ANURADHA
