EDITORIAL
On March the 21st, 2012, Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya completed 35 years of
its existence and celebrated the 36th Foundation Day with the lighting of the 1001-wick metal
lamp, Al-Villaku, brought from Kerala. It was inaugurated by H.E. Shri Sekhar Dutt, the Governor
of Chhatisgarh. The gala event was divided into various sections, viz. Odisha Cultural Festival,
National Seminar on “Tribal Unrest, State Policy and Empowerment in Contemporary India”, the
7th Annual IGRMS Lecture, opening of a new exhibition gallery on “Island Cultures of India” by
H.E. Shri Murlidhar Chandrakant Bhandare, the Governor of Odisha. Odishan art and craft, cuisine
and performing arts were the events of attraction for the public for 3 days, beginning from March
21, 2012. It was gratifying that the Department of Culture, Government of Odisha lent its timely
support in organizing the Odisha Festival. We also celebrated “Purvottari-2012” at Guwahati
and “Arnaya-Naad” at Bhopal for the promotion of folk and tribal dance forms of India. When ethno-medicine is literally
waning, to encourage the tribal medical practitioners and bring them to the urban patients, we organized a Workshopcum-Camp
at Kozhikode, in collaboration with Kerala Institute for Research, Training and Development Studies of SCs and
STs (KIRTADS). We also sent our travelling exhibitions, ANUGUNJ to Panchkula and ABHIVYAKTI to Bhubaneswar, which
were very well received by the local public and the school children. Our regular programmes, viz. Museum Popular Lectures
and interaction with the communities continued during this quarter also. I congratulate two of my young colleagues,
who were selected for the Leadership Training Programme, initiated by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the
British Museum, London, and visited London for this training in March, 2012. On the whole, it was a very satisfying quarter
for us, and we profusely thank you for your support and patronage.
From Museum Reserve Collection
Accession No. - 2010.147
Local Name - NAGADA
Equivalent - Single Membrane Musical Drum
Community - Oraon
Place of Collection - Ranchi, Jharkhand
A most prominent single membrane musical
drum played with two sticks to produce the
required tone, locally known as Nagada, Nagara
or Nagra among the tribes of Jharkhand. It is found in different
sizes. People used it as per their own choice or convenience
to carry. Nagada is of the old traditional instrument usually
accompanied with Sahnai & Dhank or double membrane
musical drum for dance and rituals during the marriage
ceremony, Jatra & festival like Sarhul & Karma, whereas used
separately during ‘Bishu Sendra’ or annual hunting expedition
held during the month of ‘Phagun’ by the Oraon Community.
This huge sized drum is made of hemispherical shaped
hollowed iron body prepared by the local ‘Lohar” caste and
its finalization process is done by the ‘Ghasi’ caste with the
parchment of leather membrane. It measures 92 cms in
height and attains 103 cms. in diameter in the opening end
and 333 cms. in circumference. Its basal end is minimum &
closed while the opposite end is open which is covered by
a thick leather sheet of buffalo skin. There are perforations
at the regular interval all along the margin of skin covering
the open end of the body. It is through each perforation
Activities of SRC, Mysore
a twisted string of skin is introduced and this
string is webbing each other in cross pattern
and wrapped around tightly to keep the skin
stretched with the support of leather strep
made two circular rings at the upper portion
and other two small rings at the lower portion
of drum and finally these strings are tightened
by a small thick ring on the bottom of the drum.
It is by this process membranous skin at the face
of the musical instrument is also tightened for providing
louder musical sound. While playing the instrument the
sound produced is in such a great volume that it reaches
approximately fifteen to twenty miles and even beyond that
in village area.
In tribal society Nagada is most important musical
instrument. It is not only the mode to reveal their love of
music & entertainment but also the way of communication
among them by sending massage of joy and emergency
since time immemorial, even today this tribal society when
undergo hunting expedition in dense forest in group they
divided themselves into small sub-groups and each group
necessarily carry a Nagada for communication. They decide
the number of sound to be made on Nagada on getting the
prey numbers of sound on any grave problem or need to help
from other sub-groups and numbers of sound for returning
to pre-decided place before starting for separate direction
in search of prey. - Rashmi Shukla
