St. Monica Parish Whitefish Bay
I have a variety of topics to talk about in this week’s bulletin article. I begin with the sad
news that I’m sure you heard about, Fr. Vic Capriolo, a priest of the Archdiocese of
Milwaukee was tragically killed in a biking accident, near his parish in Fond du Lac.
We, as a parish community, offer our most sincere sympathy to the Capriolo family. Fr. Vic
had served as an associate pastor at St. Monica from 1982-1988 and so is very well known
within the north shore community. Fr. Vic is also the brother-in-law of Rita Capriolo, the St. Eugene Youth
Minister. He was a great priest and friend to many and will truly be missed. May he rest in peace.
St. Monica School has begun. Thank you to all our teachers and staff for their preparation for another year.
Thank you to the parents who have chosen to send their children to our parish school. I realize it is a financial
sacrifice to send your child to a Catholic school, but we are blessed with an excellent school. Thank you also to all our parishioners
who support our St. Monica School.
Thank you to everyone who helped this past weekend with our Parish Feast Day celebration. While the picnic was a wet and rainy one,
we still had a wonderful time with the fun run, the movie night and the picnic. Thank you to all our donors who helped make
everything possible: Joe & Andrea Proite - Layton Fruit Market, Ted & Lisa Balisteri - Sendik’s, Megan Longacre - Bay Bakery,
Wayne & Ann Chrusciel - Fireworks Popcorn, Tony Gahn - Gahn Meat Company, Christie & Kevin Moore – Johnsonville Brats and
Wisconsin Athletic Club. Thanks to all our volunteers, in a special way, thanks to the Miller family for their help to coordinate the
Movie night, thanks to Kevin & Karin Hurley and Marietta Carpenter for coordinating and donating food for the picnic, thanks to the
Bible Boys and Knights of Columbus for cooking the food, Boy Scouts for set-up and clean-up, Home & school for donating the
bouncy castles, Carrie Eck for coordinating the kids games, Sparkles the Clown for spending time with our kids. Thanks to all the
people who helped at the fun run and the movie night, all the people who helped with ticket sales, serving the food and drinks at the
picnic.
Finally, Happy Labor Day Weekend! Enjoy the extra day and the chance to celebrate with your family and friends one last time before
the summer winds down.

Development & Stewardship Reflection
Note of thanks…
Just a quick note of thanks to those of you who volunteered for, participated in, helped sponsor, or
simply attended one or more of our Parish Feast weekend events. It was a wonderful weekend – a true
representation of the spirit of St. Monica and celebration of all that makes our faith community so remarkable.
Foremost among them are the people who comprise St. Monica Parish – we are blessed to have you call our
faith community home! Whether you ran or walked in our Diane Woodke Memorial Run/Walk event;
attended as a family our Family Movie Night; or gathered with us for food, fun, and fellowship at Sunday’s
“rain-themed” picnic, we are grateful for your participation.
Thank you for helping to make the event so wonderful – as with anything our Parish community does, we couldn’t have
made it so without you!
Teaching kids about Stewardship
As you and your family settle into a new school year, it’s a great time to teach your kids about stewardship. In fact,
children’s literature includes a multitude of stories that can help our children learn how to be stewards. For the littlest ones, books
featuring characters like the Rainbow Fish or the Little Red Hen teach basic but fundamental concepts like helping others and
sharing what we have with them to enrich their – and our! – lives.
Many times in these stories, the characters are unhappy or lonely. Then, when actions like helping or sharing come into
play, the characters experience happiness, make new friends, and feel a profound sense of fulfillment. They experience the good
feelings that come from doing kind things.
As adults and stewards, we are reminded through these simple stories that we are happier and more fulfilled when we do
something to help someone else or when we share something we have with others. Likewise, as we move into a new school year,
we can help the children in our lives learn to be good stewards by sharing some of these stories and explaining the important
lessons they convey.

Twenty - Second Sunday in Ordinary Time September 2, 2012
A PARISH MEMORIAL FOR FR. VIC
Many of our parishioners – stunned by the untimely death of Fr.
Vic – have many fond memories of him as a caring and
welcoming priest. Many have also asked if the parish is
considering some form of memorial in his honor. A plan is being
considered to provide a gathering and seating area in the front of
church, similar to the area previously developed near the parking
lot entrance. In this way, Fr. Vic’s welcoming nature would be
permanently remembered. The development and approval of such
an area – as part of the overall landscaping plan - will take a little
time. So, while details are being discussed by the appropriate
parish committees, we ask that you give some consideration to
helping out with this memorial. There will be more information
available soon.

can help you take that next step. JustFaith is a 30-week program
that uses books, videos, conversations about the most difficult
topics of the day, face-to-face encounters with the poor, and an
exploration of what the Christian tradition says about addressing
injustice in our world. JustFaith runs from September to

ST. MONICA SCHOOL BOOSTER CLUB
GOLF OUTING- FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21
To date, we have many foursomes committed to playing in the
booster club golf outing, with room for more. To clarify, this
event, even though it supports St. Monica School Athletics, it is
open to all parishioners.
The St. Monica School Booster Club raises funds to
support the athletic programs at St. Monica. Close to 90% of
students at St. Monica participate in Cross Country, Basketball,
and Volleyball. The booster club covers league fees, equipment,
uniforms, capital improvements to the gym and many other
expenses. Last year, due to your generosity, we were able to
replace the dated scoreboard with a state-of-the-art new
scoreboard.
The Booster Club golf outing is one of our annual fundraising
events and we need your help! Mark your calendar for
Friday, September 21 st for the Booster Club Golf Outing at Fire
Ridge GC in Grafton. Set up a foursome, or have us arrange a
group to play in. The cost per golfer is $100 and includes pregolf
contests to win cash and prizes, a shotgun scramble format,
post-golf food and door prizes, and much more. This year also
will include dress-down passes for the grade that has the most
parent participation.
We need door prize donations and volunteers, so even if
you don’t golf, you can get involved and help out our kids. Also,
there are still limited tee box sponsorships available that will
promote your business for all to see. To reserve your group or to

Registration Information—Religious Education
for Children in grades K4-8 th (“Sunday School”)
begins Sunday, September 16, from 9-10 am. If
you have not registered your child(ren) in the program, please do
so ASAP. Registration forms are available in the Elevator Entrance
of the church lobby, online at www.st-monica.org in Child
Ministry, and at the Ministry Center.
Catechists are crucial to the success of our parish’s Christian
Formation for Children program. Any parishioner is welcome to
serve in this rewarding ministry. Training and catechist guides are
provided. There are two catechists placed in every class, grades
K4-8 th , so you will not be alone. GRADES IN NEED: First
Grade: two catechists to partner teach. Have one catechist , need a
partner: 3 rd , 4 th , 5 th , 8 th grades. Aides to help with special needs
students are also needed; great opportunity for high school/

PLEASE JOIN US!
Holy Family in Whitefish Bay invites members of St. Monica to
join a bus trip on Thursday, September 13, to the Shrine of Our
Lady of Good Help in Champion, Wisconsin (site of the only
approved Marian apparition in this country) and the National
Shrine of St. Joseph in DePere. The bus will leave Holy Family at
8:30 am and return at 5:30. The cost is $20 for the bus, plus lunch

YEAR OF FAITH STUDY GROUP
Have you ever wondered about holy water, guardian angels, the
Church's calendar, incense, indulgences, or scapulars? Learn
about these and many other Catholic customs and their roots in
this group. We will read and discuss Scott Hahn's , Signs of Life:
40 Catholic Customs and Their Biblical Roots.

of this school year there are many items being offered at a special
price. These include Broccoli and Cheese Stuffed Chicken
Breast (3184), and two perennial favorites, Krispy Krunchy
Cod (2189) and the Apple Blossoms (4910). The flier also
includes recipes. However, if you go online, you will discover a
whole recipe section. You have one week left to order – until
Monday September 10 th . Pickup will be that Thursday, September
13 th from 2:30-3:30 in Donovan Hall. Even if you have never
ordered before, I urge you to give it a try, just this month. If you

Father Son Preached Retreat
September 21 -- 23, 2012
Theme: " Walking Together With Christ" St Alphonsus Liguori
presents a path for Fathers and Sons to walk with Christ by living
the Christian virtues. In walking this path of Christian faith,
Fathers and Sons may also grow in a deeper bond. In the "Year of
Faith" we reflect on these virtues as a means of strengthening our

October 14th - Greater Milwaukee CROP Walk. On Sunday,
October 14, 2012 the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee
will host the 27th annual Greater Milwaukee CROP Hunger
Walk. The walk raises money for international and local antihunger
organizations and is also a food drive benefiting Hunger
Task Force, an anti-hunger organization that delivers food to
pantries, homeless shelters and meal programs for free throughout
Milwaukee County.
The Archdiocesan Office on Social Justice Ministry recommends
that Catholic CROP Walk donors designate one of the following
organizations as recipients of their pledges:
•CRS (Catholic Relief Services) (www.crs.org),
• CMMB (Catholic Medical Mission Board) (www.cmmb.org),
• HI (Heifer International) (www.heifer.org),
• HHF (Haitian Health Foundations)
(www.haitianhealthfoundation.org),
• CNEWA (Catholic Near East Welfare Association)
(www.cnewa.org).
These organizations provide critical relief to people regardless of
religion or ethnicity and do so in a manner consistent with
Catholic moral teaching.
