Roy Boomer Spends
Little, Employing
Odds and Ends
Limited to an advertising budget which is
hardly more than nothing, may be annoying
to an aggressive theatre manager lilce Roy
Boomer. Boomer, however, does not let
himself get discouraged and uses whatever
means are at his disposal at the new Park
Theatre, Miles City, Mont., to exploit his
shows. An attractive lobby setpiece recently
was fashioned from some old display board,
a one-sheet and stills which created plenty
of interest in his date for "Captain From
Castile." Boomer also has found it economical
to imprint his coming shows on popcorn
bags, some of which are given to confectionary
stores to provide outside interest.
All-Negro Screen Show
Introduced at Strand
An all-Negro screen snow, 'oooked at the
Strand, Rockville Center, N.Y., attracted a
capacity audience for Manager Cort Clarkson.
The program was put on at midnight
of a weekday and attracted Negro patronage
from many surrounding communities. Theatre
patrons previously had° to travel to New
York for all-Negro entertainment and the result
of the experiment was so successful that
Clarkson intends to make the innovation a
monthly feature.
Lobby displays helped to create interest in
the program. Clarkson contacted Negro
organizations and newspapers in the vicinity
and obtained their full support.
A popular Rockville Center restaurant paid
for the printing and distribution of 3,000
special in all heralds residences throughout
the community.
Kids Get Show and Candy
At Forest Park Party
A Satui-day morning Valentine party for
children at the Forest Theatre, Forest Park,
111., arranged by John Misavice, city manager,
cost t;he theatre exactly nothing—two
sponsors, a pet shop and a florist, shouldering
the cost.
Two features plus bhree color cartoons and
a serial attracted a full house of youngsters
who had been informed of the show through
a three-sheet lobby display, special marquee,
newspaper ads, house programs and a special
trailer which ran two weeks in advance.
A bag of valentines, supplied by the cooperating
merchants, was given away to
every boy and girl
attending.
Spot Quizzes on Radio Aid
Music Box in Portland
Archie Zarewski, manager of the Music
Box in Portland, Ore., theatre made a tieup
with station KPDQ to pubhcize the theatre.
KPDQ, broadcasting from sunrise to sundown,
offers its listeners various spot quizzes
throughout the day, giving a pass to the
Music Box for each correct answer. Usually
popping out with odd "trick," yet comparatively
simple questions, the radio station
gives its listeners a few minutes to phone in
the correct answers. Zarewski said the plan
has increased his business appreciably.
