Australian music! 

Sounds Australia is the public face of a collective 

of interested parties including Federal and State 

government agencies, Industry Associations, 

commercial companies and others with a genuine 

interest in working together, all partnering to support 

Australian music export activities in key markets. 

At SXSW 09, Sounds Australia brings you a range of 

opportunities to meet our home grown talent and 

hear the great music they have to offer. On pages 

6-22 you’ll find a comprehensive list of all the 

Australian artists at SXSW, plus details on where 

they’ll be performing and how to contact them.

AUSSIE ARTISTS AT SXSW 09 

AN HORSE 

Genre: Indie 

Bio: It is not because Kate is the 

size of jockey or because 

Damon was once kicked by 

a goat that An Horse bears 

its name. Damon played 

drums and worked in one of 

the few remaining Australian independent 

record stores with Kate. The pair created An 

Horse out of the dank basement store. They 

were surprised when after one show they 

were offered an opening slot on Tegan and 

Sara’s 2008 Out Of Hibernation Spring US & 

UK tours. They released debut EP Not Really 

Scared. An Horse have toured with I Heart 

Hiroshima, New Pornographers, Tegan & Sara 

and recently Kaki King. They released their 

debut album Rearrange Beds on Valve and 

they are planning to spend most of 2009 

touring in the US & Canada.

Genre: Singer/Songwriter 

Bio: Andy is a 23-year-old singer, 

songwriter and piano player. 

In 2004 Andy met Sydneybased 

producer and multiinstrumentalist 

Tony 

Buchen. They began 

recording demos and put together a small live 

group of some of the most inspiring players 

Sydney has to offer. Beginning recording after 

a short US tour, Tony was keen to bring the live 

energy of the band to Andy’s songs. Andy is 

putting the finishing touches on his debut 

album, with sessions at New York’s legendary 

Electric Lady Studios and Sydney’s 301 

Studios. Top artists are already hip to Andy; 

with Kanye West stopping by the New York 

studio to hear Andy’s works-in-progress and 

Andy having already opened for Joss Stone, 

Donavon Frankenreiter and Duffy on their 

Australian tours. Andy Bull’s debut album is 

set for release in Australia in July 2009.

Bio: Angus and Julia Stone 

make their North American

heartfelt and organic songs. 

Raised in the northern beaches of Sydney, 

Australia, Angus and Julia’s love of music was 

inextricably intertwined with their 

experiences of growing up in a musical family. 

Music was an integral aspect of family life, with 

music as the bloodline through both their 

mother and father’s families. A long line of 

musicians made for an environment that 

encouraged the duo to express themselves

Bio: Closure in Moscow hails 

from Melbourne, 

Australia. After releasing 

their debut “albumette” on Taperjean 

Records in Australia, the band caught the eye 

of US-based label Equal Vision, known for 

such successful acts as Coheed and 

Cambria, Circa Survive, and Chiodos. The 

band recently recorded their debut LP with 

producer Kris Crummett in Portland, Oregon, 

which will see its release this May on EVR. The

GABRIELLA CILMI

Bio: Gabriella Cilmi has had a 

stellar start to 2009 scoring 

nominations for a Brit 

Award (UK) and an Echo 

Award (Germany). Cilmi has 

been nominated in the 

‘International Solo Female Artist’ category for 

the Brits alongside Beyonce, Santogold, Pink 

and Katy Perry. In the Echos, she’s been 

nominated in the ‘Best International 

Newcomer’ category with Duffy, Leona Lewis, 

Katy Perry and Amy McDonald the other 

contenders. 

It’s been less than a year since Cilmi burst 

onto the worldwide music scene. In Australia, 

her smash-hit debut single Sweet About Me 

was released in March and her year was 

topped off by scooping the pool at the ARIA 

Awards where she took home six awards 

including Best Female Artist and Single of the 

Year. Internationally the picture has been just 

as impressive. Her album, Lessons to Be 

Learned has reached sales of over 750,000 

worldwide and Sweet About Me has been a 

smash hit with top 10 results in over 10 

countries. Sweet About Me was also the 3rd 

‘most heard’ song on UK radio in 2008. 

Cilmi is preparing for her assault on the US 

market. Lessons to be Learned will be released 

on March 18 through Universal Republic.

GUY SEBASTIAN 

Genre: Soul 

Bio: Guy became the first 

Australian Idol winner in 

2003, with his first solo 

single Angels Brought Me 

Here debuting at number 

one and also becoming the 

fastest selling Australian single in ARIA chart 

history. The smash hit single reached 

Number 1 in four Asian countries and New 

Zealand. In 2007, Guy recorded his fourth 

studio album in Memphis, TN entitled 

The Memphis Album. 2009 will see Guy 

release his 5th studio album in Australia and 

in the US. Guy spent time in Los Angeles in

HELL CITY GLAMOURS 

Genre: Rock & Roll 

Bio: Sydney’s Hell City 

Glamours have been 

dolling out rock ‘n’ roll 

headaches of the good 

kind around Australia for the last seven years 

both as headliners and as support for some of 

the world’s biggest names, including Paul 

Stanley, Sebastian Bach, New York Dolls and 

many more. 2008 saw them fund and release 

their first full length album after a string of 

successful EPs and a 7”. Self titled and 

brimming with influence whilst copying no-one, 

it drips with the passion of four guys making 

music for the love of it, injected with the 

influence of Black Crowes, Hellacopters, Thin 

Lizzy, AC/DC, Rancid, Chuck Berry and a Myriad

MIAMI HORROR
