SPU MANILA HOLDS STRATEGIC PLANNING SEMINAR IN BANGKOK
St. Paul University Manila held a Strategic Planning Seminar in Bangkok on 27-28 October
2007. The seminar was facilitated by Ms. Wynna Medina, SPUM President and Sr. Rosanne
Malilin, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, and attended by administrators and key
personnel of the university.
Ms. Medina stresses a point during a plenary meeting…
The agenda for the seminar included the presentation of new Key Result Areas
(KRAs), review of indicators, and review of perceived SPU Manila SWOT.
The group was divided into 10 committees, as follows:
1. Identity
2. Teaching
3. Research
4. Community and Extension Service
5. Human Resource
6. Physical Resource
7. Financial Resource
8. Growth and Expansion
9. Public Presence
10. Information Technology
The Committees worked far into the evening of the 27 tth and presented their reports
the following morning. After the presentation of reports, the entire group attended Mass in
the seminar venue itself. The Mass was celebrated by two Thai priests and coordinated by
Sr. Erlinda, an SPU Manila alumna, who has been in Bangkok for some time now.
Before and after the seminar, which was held in the Siam Beverly Hotel, the
participants had the opportunity to go on tours, watch cultural shows, and of course, go
shopping. These are part of the rationale for holding the activity in another country, which
is to broaden the perspective of SPU Manila administrators, faculty and staff and give them
the confidence to participate in global conferences and activities. In fact, the university has
also encouraged such trips for the students and alumnae.

SPU MANILA INTER-OFFICE BULLETIN LAUNCHED
Today, 12 November 2007, St. Paul University Manila launches the SPU Manila Inter-Office
Bulletin. The on-line bulletin is one of the outcomes of the Strategic Planning Seminar held
in Bangkok on 27-28 October 2007. The Committee on Public Presence recommended that
an inter-office bulletin be published on-line for all departments and units of the university.
The objective of the publication is for everyone in the university to be informed of activities
and projects, accomplishments, and honors of the different departments and units.
It was noted that there have been many achievements of students, as well as faculty
and administrators, that have not been made known to the school community. This
publication seeks to address this area of concern. It is aligned to the teaching of our Patron
and Father, St. Paul, who said in 1 Corinthian (12:12-14):
The body is one and has many members, but all the members, many though
they are, are one body… If one member suffers, all the members suffer with
it; if one member is honored, all the members share its joy.
The SPU Manila Inter-Office Bulletin will therefore be the vehicle by which we will
collectively suffer or rejoice.
To maximize the efficiency and effectivity of this publication, all offices are requested
to send data on their coming activities, results of previous contests and the like, and other
pertinent information to marionettemartinez@yahoo.com not later than Thursday of a given
week for inclusion in the bulletin, which will be released on the Monday of the next week.
SPU MANILA HONORS DAISY AVELLANA: NATIONAL ARTIST
St. Paul University Manila will present “A Tribute to Daisy H. Avellana: National Artist,” on
17 November in the Fleur-de-lis Theatre. Mrs. Avellana was a drama teacher in St. Paul in
the early fifties and is recognized for having planted the seeds of theatre in the school
through the Paulinian Players Guild (PPG).
The tribute will have the following numbers:

The tribute is being spear-headed by Sr. Maria Anunciata Sta. Ana, SPC and Mrs. Sherry
Lara-Alingod (SPUM, HS ’66 and ABCA ’70) in coordination with the Cultural Center of the
Philippines and the National Commission on Culture and Arts (NCCA). A grant has been
provided by the NCCA for this event.

Sr. Maria Anunciata Sta. Ana, SPC, Dean of the College of Music and the Performing Arts,
shares the following good news:
PAULINIAN WINNERS SING WITH MMCO ORCHESTRA.
The winners in the vocal competition "Mga Awiting Filipino" held at Miriam College on 28
September 2007 will be featured in a concert at 2:00 p.m., 16 November 2007 in the
Marian Hall of Miriam College.
Out of 17 contestants in the women's category--from the University of the
Philippines, the University of Sto. Tomas, Sta. Isabel College, and St. Paul University
Manila--Ma. Isabel Canoy and Camille Monique Gallano of the SPU Manila College of Music
and the Performing Arts won first and third places, respectively.
The winners will be accompanied by the Metro Manila Community Orchestra under
the baton of Chino Toledo. The repertoire includes duets by the winners who have been
paired off to give more color to the concert of all-Filipino music.
Similarly, Beah Darda Gumarang, second year Bachelor of Music in Piano student,
won second place in Bach Piano Competition (Category B) sponsored by the Piano Teachers'
Guild of the Philippines (PTGP). She bested 21 others from different music schools in Manila.
SPMAFI CONSIDERS ADOPTING VISUALLY IMPAIRED BM STUDENT
In principle, the St. Paul Manila Alumni Foundation, Inc. (SPMAFI) is seriously considering
adopting visually impaired Gulliver Enverga, who enrolled last semester in the College of
Music and the Performing Arts.
Gulliver was graduated valedictorian by the National High School for the Blind. He
made good in his first semester here, his highest grade being 96% in Rudiments of Music;
but due to lack of funds, he could not enroll in the second term. Sr. Maria Anunciata Sta.

Ana, SPC, Dean of the College of Music and the Performing Arts, did not want him to stop so
she requested the assistance of the SPMAFI officers.
