SHARING…SHARING…SHARING…
From the Vatican Insider
Pope appoints communicator and scholar as new Archbishop of Manila
A theologian much appreciated by Benedict XVI
GERARD O'CONNELL
VATICAN CITY
The Pontiff has appointed the 54-year old Bishop Luis
Antonio Tagle, a great communicator, respected
theologian, inspiring preacher and a man sensitive to the
needs of the poor, as the new Archbishop of Manila. He
also set him in line to become a cardinal, probably at the
next consistory.
Archbishop Tagle now moves into the national limelight
as head of the principal diocese in the largest Catholic
country in Asia. He will govern a diocese with a
population of 3.2 million people, 2.8 million of whom are
Catholics, at a time when secularization is making
headway in the Philippines too, and presenting many
challenges to the faith, also in legislative field, regarding
family life, birth control (reproductive health), marriage and other issues.

Many expect him, like his two predecessors – Cardinals Gaudencio Rosales and Jaime Sin - to
play an important role not only in the Church but also in the life of the nation, especially
through the promotion of justice in this land of 92 million people, a great many of whom are
forced to emigrate to find work and help their families economically..
He comes as immediate successor – and, many say, the favorite son- of the highly respected
Cardinal Gaudencio Rosales, 79, a deeply spiritual man who has governed this archdiocese
since 2003 and devoted great attention to the plight of the poor, while castigating the
corruption and bad government at national and local level.
The Vatican broke the news of Tagle’s appointment at 6.00 p.m. Manila time (midday Rome
time), October 13, confirming what had been widely expected in the Philippines for several
months. It also said that pope had accepted the resignation of Cardinal Rosales, who had first
submitted it in 2007 on reaching retirement age.
The young, dynamic, Archbishop Tagle was born in Manila, where he studied at the San Jose
seminary in Quezon City, and graduated from the Ateneo di Manila University. Ordained priest
for the Manila archdiocese in 1982, after working for some time in parishes and seminaries –
in one of which he was rector, he was sent to do further studies at The Catholic University of
America, Washington D.C. (1987-91). There he gained his Doctorate in Theology and, later,
went on to do studies in Italy.
He served as a member of the International Theological Commission (1997-2002), and
attended the 1998 World Synod of Bishops for Asia as an expert. After working in parishes and
teaching theology in four seminaries, Pope John Paul II appointed him as bishop of Imus, a
diocese with 2.6 million Catholics, in 2001. He was one of the Filipino delegates at the Synod
of Bishops in 2005 and 2008, and is currently President of the Commission for the Doctrine of
the Faith in the Philippines’ Bishops’ Conference.
Well known by the nick-name “Chito”, this extrovert and friendly archbishop is an experienced
TV communicator. For many years, he has hosted an hour-long Sunday television program,
“The Word Exposed with Bishop Chito Tagle. During this hour, he shares insights on the
Scripture readings for Mass and answers viewer’s questions on the Bible and Faith.
A member of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), he was warmly applauded
when he addressed the October 2008 Synod of Bishops on the Word of God, and reminded
participants that the Bible shows a God who not only speaks but also listens. "He listens
especially to the just, widows, orphans, persecuted, and the poor who have no voice", Tagle
said. Likewise, he added, "the Church must listen in the way God listens, and lend its voice to
the voiceless."
Bishop Tagle is a friend of the St. Paul Sisters.
He officiated at the Mass and blessing of the
Chapel of Our Lady of Chartres in the St. Paul
Center for Renewal on 12 September 2011.
