LOOKING BACK…<br />

Graduate School Holds <strong>St</strong>udent Orientations<br />

in <strong>SPU</strong> <strong>Manila</strong> and <strong>University</strong> of Cordilleras-Baguio<br />

An orientation for the students of the Teacher Certificate Program, Master of Arts in Nursing,<br />

Master of Arts in Education, Master of Arts in Special Education, Master in Business<br />

Administration, Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Education, and Doctor of Philosophy in<br />

Education was held on 18 June 2011 in the HRM Training Center.<br />

The activity aimed to:<br />

1. Orient the students on the university’s vision and mission and the graduate school’s goals<br />

and objectives.<br />

2. Ensure that the students are informed of the graduate school academic policies, guidelines,<br />

and procedures.<br />

3. Clarify various academic concerns, especially in the students’ curricular programs,<br />

comprehensive examinations, and the like.<br />

Sr. Lilia Thérèse L. Tolentino, SPC, <strong>University</strong> President, welcomed the group. Then, the<br />

inspirational message of Sr. Fidelisa de Marie Portillo, SPC, Vice-President for Academic<br />

Services was read by Dr. Mary Grace Leongson (as Sister was in Antipolo for a retreat). Sr.<br />

Flordeliza Deza, SPC, Director, International Relations and Language Development Office, gave<br />

an overview of <strong>SPU</strong> <strong>Manila</strong>, after which Dr. Elizabeth D. Ramos, Dean of the Graduate School,<br />

discussed the academic policies, guidelines, and procedures.<br />

A student orientation was also held for the Master of Arts in Nursing and Doctor of<br />

Philosophy in Nursing Education students enrolled in the <strong>SPU</strong> <strong>Manila</strong> Graduate School Academic<br />

Extension Center in the <strong>University</strong> of Cordilleras (UC) - Baguio City on 23 July 2011. Dr.<br />

Ramos conducted the orientation.<br />

CMPA SPONSORS SEMINAR–WORKSHOP ON MUSIC THERAPY<br />

Ms. Annette Asuncion, M.A.,M.S., conducted a Music Therapy Workshop on 27-28 July 2011,<br />

from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. in the Glee Club Room. Participants were from <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Paul</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Iloilo (Sr. Nicole De Marie Dabalus, SPC, Claudette Anne T. Colmary, Eden Shiz A. Parpa, and<br />

Shailini G. Gestosani); <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Paul</strong> College of Pasig (Sr. Ma. Theresa Asencio, SPC and Sr. Luisa<br />

Maria Chavez, SPC); Master of Music students and alumni (Nerilyn Beratio, Jewel Solidum,<br />

Valerie Joy E. Cabance, and Graenald Enero); other guests (Rev. Fr. Marlo Abad, Ms. Odette<br />

Tuazon-HR Dept.), Dr. Elizabeth Ramos (Dean of the Graduate School), Gerard Kein Z. Palmero,<br />

Ryan Orsal; and the College of Music and the Performing Arts faculty and staff (Josefina Antonio,<br />

Melissa Taqueban, Eliseo Larena, Teresita David, Bing Morado); and students.


Ms. Asuncion discussed the background of Music Therapy as a health profession and its<br />

importance not only to individuals with disabilities and other diseases but also to children,<br />

adolescents, adults, and elderly through presenting activities relevant to the needs of each<br />

individual. Ms. Asuncion expressed how grateful she is for her <strong>Paul</strong>inian education. She added<br />

that it was her <strong>Paul</strong>inian spirit that urged her to hone her craft and render service to the<br />

community.<br />

Ms. Asuncion is currently a Special Education Teacher for children with Autism Spectrum<br />

Disorder (ASD). She has also worked as a Senior Program Manager of the Southwest Human<br />

Development in Phoenix, Arizona and as an Assistant Principal of a Public School in Queens,<br />

New York. She gained her Masters of Science in Education in Baruch College, New York and<br />

Masters of Arts, major in Music Therapy in New York <strong>University</strong>, New York. She has also earned<br />

thirty three graduate credits in Special Education. She took her undergraduate studies in Music,<br />

major in Piano in <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Paul</strong> College <strong>Manila</strong>-Conservatory of Music on a full scholarship grant.<br />

TEMASEK Foundation Hosts Alumni Homecoming Dinner<br />

The TEMASEK Foundation of Singapore hosted its 1 st<br />

2011 in the EDSA Shangri-la Hotel.<br />

alumni homecoming dinner on 22 July<br />

Around 200 alumni and guests from Ateneo, <strong>University</strong> of the Philippines, Ramon<br />

Magsaysay High School, Technological <strong>University</strong> of the Philippines, and <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Paul</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

System attended the activity. The alumni from various schools have all been recipients of the<br />

educational programs offered by TEMASEK to selected schools in the Philippines. The <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Paul</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> System schools, through the efforts of <strong>SPU</strong> <strong>Manila</strong>, are partners of TEMASEK in their<br />

“Train the Nurse Educator” program.<br />

The alumni homecoming started with opening remarks by the head of TEMASEK,<br />

followed by a sharing of learning from each program, and an inspirational message from Mr.<br />

Tony Tam Caktiong, Chairman and CEO of Jollibee Foods Corporation. One of the nurse leaders<br />

of Cohort 1, Dr. Glenn Guira, represented the <strong>SPU</strong>S group. Everyone was given a chance to get<br />

to know the alumni from other schools and projects. It was indeed a night of fun and sharing of<br />

experiences from the delegates on different fields of education.<br />

ALUMNI AFFAIRS<br />

MEMORIAL MASS FOR RAFAELA LIM-SIAZON<br />

Children of Rafaela Lim-Siazon, <strong>Paul</strong>inian alumna, invited her<br />

relatives, friends, and colleagues to a Memorial Mass for her, held<br />

at 10:00 A.M., 6 August 2011 in the Chapel of the Crucified Christ.<br />

Mrs. Siazon died on 6 December 2010, at the age of 92,<br />

from Parkinson’s Disease complications.<br />

Ate Reling in her prime<br />

“Ate Reling” is survived and will be dearly missed by her 11<br />

children—all <strong>Paul</strong>inians : Domingo Jr. and wife Kay; Rosemille and<br />

husband Cesar; Clairemon and husband Manuel; Teresita;<br />

Rebecca and husband Carlos; Danilo and wife Rebecca; Victoria<br />

and husband Jose; Florecita; Deogracias and wife Caren;<br />

Catherine and husband Feliciano; and Dennis and wife Rosie.<br />

Three US-based daughters—Rebecca (HS ’63), Florecita (HS ’68), and Catherine<br />

(HS ’73)--came home with their mother’s ashes, which were interred in Loyola Memorial Park<br />

after the reception.<br />

Ambassador Domingo Siazon, Jr. spoke on behalf of Ate Reling’s children and thanked<br />

everyone for coming. He said that coming home to <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Paul</strong> was something that their mother<br />

would have been truly happy about as the school was one of her two loves, the other being<br />

“Chinese cultural research” aka “mah-jong.”<br />
