of Michigan Scholars 

From athletics to community 

service, Sandile Ashford knew it 

would take much more than just 

activities and good grades to make 

it into college. With the help of 

Saginaw Public Schools, she chose 

the biggest ingredient that spells 

greater success in college, the type 

of courses you take in high school. 

The 18 year old Saginaw High 

School graduate, who also took 

courses at Saginaw Arts & Sciences 

Academy, wanted to take 

challenging courses that would 

prepare her for college and develop 

solid study skills and earn enough 

scholarship money to pay for her 

post-secondary education. Along 

the way she added one more designation 

to that list: She became a 

Michigan Scholar. 

Sandile, who will study Communications 

at Howard University in the 

Fall, is one of 95 Saginaw Public 

Schools’ graduates who earned the 

designation of Michigan Scholar. 

Sandile and her fellow 2008 Michigan 

Scholars are profiled in this 

special Saginaw Public Schools 

publication. 

This is the fourth class of Michigan 

Scholars to graduate from 

the Saginaw Public Schools. As 

was the case with the first three 

classes, the Class of 2008 includes 

an extraordinary group of young 

people with diverse backgrounds, 

interests, personalities and career 

goals. One common thread 

that unites this group of Michigan 

Scholars is that they took full 

advantage of the resources available 

through the Saginaw Public 

Schools to build a strong foundation 

for future success. Along the 

way, they received assistance from 

a host of business, community 

and higher education partners and 

mentors. 

Michigan Scholars is an effort by 

Saginaw Public School educators 

and area business leaders to encourage 

students to complete challenging 

courses during high school 

that will prepare them for quality 

jobs or higher education after 

graduation. The Scholars Course 

of Study gives students the foundation 

they will need to succeed 

in a technical school, community 

college, university, the military or 

industry after graduation. With a 

Scholars background, a person is 

a more attractive job candidate and 

more likely to complete training or 

education that leads to better jobs 

and better pay. 

The Michigan Scholars philosophy 

is based on the belief that it 

is better to pass an academically 

challenging course than it is to 

receive a higher grade in an easier 

class. The Michigan Scholars 

program encourages students 

to complete a specific sequence 

of rigorous academic courses in 

math, science, language arts, foreign 

language and social studies 

during high school that will make 

them stronger candidates for jobs 

or higher education. 

Saginaw Public Schools is one of 

only three Michigan school districts 

hand-selected four years ago by 

the Business Leaders for Educational 

Excellence to participate in 

the Michigan Scholars Program.

Single Gender Education 

Longfellow Elementary provides singlegender
