Intermediate Knitting
Materials
• THOROBRED 8 ply 100g ball
• 1 ball - Main Colour (M – 2010 wine)
• 1 ball - 1st Contrast (C1 – 2003 green)
• 1 ball - 2nd Contrast (C2 – 2017
cream)
• 1 pair - 4.00mm knitting needles or size
needed to give correct tension
• Scissors, yarn needle
Poinsettia is approx 18cm from tip to tip of
outside leaves.
Tension
21 sts x 44 rows to 10cm over garter st,
using 4.00mm needles.
To work a tension square, using 4.00mm
needles, cast on 32 sts. Work 66 rows
stocking st. Cast off loosely. Check your
tension carefully. If less sts to 10cm use
smaller needles, if more sts use bigger
needles.

beg = begin/ning; cont = continue;
dec = decrease or decreasing;
garter st = every row knit; inc = increase or
increasing; K = knit; K2tog = knit 2 stitches
together; rem = remain/ing; rep = repeat;
sl = slip; sts = stitch/es; WS = wrong side;
Special Abbreviation
Bobble = (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1) all into next
st, turn, knit across these 5 sts, turn, P5,
turn, K5, turn, P5, pass 2nd, 3rd, 4th and
5th sts over 1st on right-hand needle ... one
st.

FLOWER (make 2 pieces)
Using 4.00mm needles and M, cast on 30 sts.
Row 1(WS): Knit, inc in every st to end … 60 sts.
Beg Petals
** Row 1: Sl 1, K9, turn.
Cont on these 10 sts for first petal.
Row 2: Sl 1, K9.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows 5 times.
Row 13: Sl 1, K2tog, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 …
8 sts.
Knit 3 rows slipping the first st (as before) in each
row.
Row 17: As 13th row … 6 sts.
Knit 3 rows, slipping the first st (as before) in each
row.
Row 21: Sl 1, (K2tog) twice, K1 … 4 sts.
Knit 3 rows slipping first st (as before) in each row.
Row 25: (K2tog) twice … 2 sts.
Row 26: – K2.
Row 27:K2tog. Fasten off. **
This completes the first petal.
With right side facing, join M to rem sts and rep from
** to ** for 2nd petal.
With right side facing, join M to rem sts and rep from
** to ** for 3rd petal.
With right side facing, join M to rem sts and rep from
** to ** for 4th petal.
With right side facing, join M to rem sts and rep from
** to ** for 5th petal.
With right side facing, join M to rem sts and rep from
** to ** for 6th petal … completing all petals of
flower.
LEAVES
Using 4.00mm needles and C1, cast on 42 sts.
Row 1(WS): Knit, inc in every st to end … 84 sts.
Beg Leaf
** Row 1:Sl 1, K13, turn.
Cont on these 14 sts for first leaf.
Row 2: Sl 1, K13.
Rep 1st and 2nd rows 6 times.
Row 15: Sl 1, K2tog, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 … 12
sts.
Knit 3 rows, slipping the first st (as before) in each row.
Rep last 4 rows 3 times … 6 sts.
Row 31: Sl 1, (K2tog) twice, K1 … 4 sts.
Knit 3 rows slipping first st (as before) in each row.
Row 35: (K2tog) twice … 2 sts.
Row 36:K2.
Row 37: K2tog. Fasten off. **
This completes first leaf.
With right side facing, join C1 to rem sts and rep from **
to ** for 2nd leaf.
With right side facing, join C1 to rem sts and rep from **
to ** for 3rd leaf.
With right side facing, join C1 to rem sts and rep from **
to ** for 4th leaf.
With right side facing, join C1 to rem sts and rep from **
to ** for 5th leaf.
With right side facing, join C1 to rem sts and rep from **
to ** for 6th leaf … completing all leaves.
CENTRE
Using 4.00mm needles and C2, cast on 13 sts.
Row 1: K1, * Bobble, K1, rep from * to end.
Row 2:K1, * K2tog, rep from * to end ... 7 sts.
Cut off yarn, leaving a 20cm tail. Thread tail through rem
sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.
TO MAKE UP
DO NOT PRESS. Join first and last petals of flower pieces
together for 1cm from cast on edge. Run a gathering
thread along cast on edge, moulding petals into correct
shape and position as you gather. Repeat for leaves. Place
flower pieces onto leaves as pictured and oversew gathered
edges together. Place centre over gathered edges
and catch in position as pictured.
