Intermediate Knitting<br />

Materials<br />

• THOROBRED 8 ply 100g ball<br />

• 1 ball - Main Colour (M – 2010 wine)<br />

• 1 ball - 1st Contrast (C1 – 2003 green)<br />

• 1 ball - 2nd Contrast (C2 – 2017<br />

cream)<br />

• 1 pair - 4.00mm knitting needles or size<br />

needed to give correct tension<br />

• Scissors, yarn needle<br />

Poinsettia is approx 18cm from tip to tip of<br />

outside leaves.<br />

Tension<br />

21 sts x 44 rows to 10cm over garter st,<br />

using 4.00mm needles.<br />

To work a tension square, using 4.00mm<br />

needles, cast on 32 sts. Work 66 rows<br />

stocking st. Cast off loosely. Check your<br />

tension carefully. If less sts to 10cm use<br />

smaller needles, if more sts use bigger<br />

needles.<br />

Abbreviations<br />

beg = begin/ning; cont = continue;<br />

dec = decrease or decreasing;<br />

garter st = every row knit; inc = increase or<br />

increasing; K = knit; K2tog = knit 2 stitches<br />

together; rem = remain/ing; rep = repeat;<br />

sl = slip; sts = stitch/es; WS = wrong side;<br />

Special Abbreviation<br />

Bobble = (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1) all into next<br />

st, turn, knit across these 5 sts, turn, P5,<br />

turn, K5, turn, P5, pass 2nd, 3rd, 4th and<br />

5th sts over 1st on right-hand needle ... one<br />

Using 4.00mm needles and M, cast on 30 sts.<br />

Row 1(WS): Knit, inc in every st to end … 60 sts.<br />

Beg Petals<br />

** Row 1: Sl 1, K9, turn.<br />

Cont on these 10 sts for first petal.<br />

Row 2: Sl 1, K9.<br />

Rep 1st and 2nd rows 5 times.<br />

Row 13: Sl 1, K2tog, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 …<br />

8 sts.<br />

Knit 3 rows slipping the first st (as before) in each<br />

row.<br />

Row 17: As 13th row … 6 sts.<br />

Knit 3 rows, slipping the first st (as before) in each<br />

row.<br />

Row 21: Sl 1, (K2tog) twice, K1 … 4 sts.<br />

Knit 3 rows slipping first st (as before) in each row.<br />

Row 25: (K2tog) twice … 2 sts.<br />

Row 26: – K2.<br />

Row 27:K2tog. Fasten off. **<br />

This completes the first petal.<br />

With right side facing, join M to rem sts and rep from<br />

** to ** for 2nd petal.<br />

With right side facing, join M to rem sts and rep from<br />

** to ** for 3rd petal.<br />

With right side facing, join M to rem sts and rep from<br />

** to ** for 4th petal.<br />

With right side facing, join M to rem sts and rep from<br />

** to ** for 5th petal.<br />

With right side facing, join M to rem sts and rep from<br />

** to ** for 6th petal … completing all petals of<br />

LEAVES<br />

Using 4.00mm needles and C1, cast on 42 sts.<br />

Row 1(WS): Knit, inc in every st to end … 84 sts.<br />

Beg Leaf<br />

** Row 1:Sl 1, K13, turn.<br />

Cont on these 14 sts for first leaf.<br />

Row 2: Sl 1, K13.<br />

Rep 1st and 2nd rows 6 times.<br />

Row 15: Sl 1, K2tog, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 … 12<br />

sts.<br />

Knit 3 rows, slipping the first st (as before) in each row.<br />

Rep last 4 rows 3 times … 6 sts.<br />

Row 31: Sl 1, (K2tog) twice, K1 … 4 sts.<br />

Knit 3 rows slipping first st (as before) in each row.<br />

Row 35: (K2tog) twice … 2 sts.<br />

Row 36:K2.<br />

Row 37: K2tog. Fasten off. **<br />

This completes first leaf.<br />

With right side facing, join C1 to rem sts and rep from **<br />

to ** for 2nd leaf.<br />

With right side facing, join C1 to rem sts and rep from **<br />

to ** for 3rd leaf.<br />

With right side facing, join C1 to rem sts and rep from **<br />

to ** for 4th leaf.<br />

With right side facing, join C1 to rem sts and rep from **<br />

to ** for 5th leaf.<br />

With right side facing, join C1 to rem sts and rep from **<br />

to ** for 6th leaf … completing all leaves.<br />

CENTRE<br />

Using 4.00mm needles and C2, cast on 13 sts.<br />

Row 1: K1, * Bobble, K1, rep from * to end.<br />

Row 2:K1, * K2tog, rep from * to end ... 7 sts.<br />

Cut off yarn, leaving a 20cm tail. Thread tail through rem<br />

sts, draw up tightly and fasten off securely.<br />

TO MAKE UP<br />

DO NOT PRESS. Join first and last petals of flower pieces<br />

together for 1cm from cast on edge. Run a gathering<br />

thread along cast on edge, moulding petals into correct<br />

shape and position as you gather. Repeat for leaves. Place<br />

flower pieces onto leaves as pictured and oversew gathered<br />

edges together. Place centre over gathered edges<br />

and catch in position as pictured.<br />
