Leading the Way
Sport Southland is a charitable regional
sports trust that supports sport, events
and active lifestyles throughout the entire
community.
It is focussed on inspiring sporting excellence
and active lifestyles and works with people
of all ages to achieve this.
With offices in Invercargill and Gore and the
delivery of programmes Southland-wide,
Sport Southland has a strong presence
throughout the region, including in the
Wakatipu Basin which is serviced by Sport
Central – a joint venture between Sport
Southland and Sport Otago.
The main components of Sport
Southland’s work are:
Sport
The sport team provides a wide range of
support to Regional Sports Organisations and
clubs throughout the region, and is focussed
on achieving specific outcomes particularly
for the seven targeted sports as identified by
Sport New Zealand at national level. It runs
a number of programmes – including the ILT
and BNZ holiday sports programmes – and
offers support in coaching, talent development
and RSO capability. It is also responsible for
the KiwiSport fund and the six SportStart
Southland programmes running in primary
schools throughout Southland.
Active Lifestyles
Sport Southland supports active lifestyles in
all age groups with the aim of making more
Southlanders more active more often.
Our active lifestyles advisors work with
infants and their parents through Active
Movement and Fundamental Skills, through
to seniors through BNZ Active Walkers
KiwiSeniors and the Introduction to Aqua
Jogging programme.
The active lifestyles team also co-ordinates
and delivers a wide variety of programmes
entire events.
Some of the key events Sport Southland
is involved with include the BNZ Surf to
City, MLT Moonshine Trail, the Ascot Park
Hotel Southland Festival of Running and the
Distinction Hotels Milford Mountain Classic.
Tom Pryde was a founding trustee of Sport
Southland in 1990 and has continued to be
a strong supporter of the organisation and
its work.
Tom is heavily involved in triathlon,
multisport and adventure racing and has
served on numerous boards and trusts.
Tom succeeded Derek Turnbull as patron
in October 2007. Derek Turnbull – ‘the
world’s fastest old man’ – was the settlor and
patron until his death in November 2006.
SportNet
Sport Southland is a member of SportNet,
the national network of 17 RSTs throughout
the country and is supported by Sport New
Zealand to deliver a wide range of sportbased
programmes throughout the region.
RSTs work across the sport and recreation
spectrum, assisting Regional Sporting
Organisations, schools and clubs as well
as supporting individuals and community
groups participating in less structured
physical activity.
4 Chairman and Chief Executive Report
Chairman and Chief Executive Report
Sport Southland has completed the year under review in good heart but not without
challenges that have forced change across our organisation.
The executive team faced considerable challenge as the organisation grew in terms of its
delivery and service, while at the same time facing funding reductions.
Sport Southland revenue streams were affected against the backdrop of the New Zealand
and global economy. As such, the reduced level of sector funding has created huge pressure
on the traditional sport and recreation funding base and, when coupled with central
government health sector reforms, it has created a challenging environment to operate in.
Throughout the year our staff showed an exceptional level of energy to continue to deliver
to the community whilst major internal change was taking place. Staff reductions forced
on Sport Southland were simply a result of financial constraints as opposed to individual
performance outcomes.
Sport Southland Chairman
David Burnett & CEO Richard Hoskin.
Financially Sport Southland is in a solid position reporting a modest cash surplus enabling it
to near its cash reserves target of $450k or approx three months trading. The trustees are
of the view that Sport Southland should reach our targeted cash reserve level to ensure that
if further difficult years are to occur, those reserves enable the organisation to develop and
support programmes in the community with confidence. It is appropriate to note the board
allocated $50,000 of the 2011/12 surplus towards next year’s operational deficit to support
staff levels over an extended period whilst working through our staffing restructure early in
the 2012/13 year.
A supportive base to
work from
While financial survival is vital, growth is not
possible without a strong commercial and
stakeholder platform. Solid progress has
been made over recent years to establish a
broad funding base that reflects our wider
mandate to service the community.
With Sport NZ, the ILT Foundation, the
Invercargill Licensing Trust, the Community
Trust of Southland and the Mataura Licensing
Trust as major partners it is pleasing to
advise the development of our commercial
sponsorship base is also growing. We have
been successful in establishing a number of
smaller partnerships, as well as developing
a strong relationship with the BNZ across a
range of our programmes.
It has been a fantastic relationship to date;
providing a positive financial impact for Sport
Southland, whilst providing great community
name association and leverage opportunities
for the BNZ, and we are excited about
growing and building on this partnership in
future.
Community Sport
Increasing participation
New Zealand has a wonderful community
volunteer base but it does appear the long
term commitment to the traditional club
structure as we know it is changing. Sport
NZ has a strong focus on community sport,
particularly around increasing participation
numbers and the volunteer base at club
level while supporting and, where required,
improving the capability of clubs and RSOs.
Sport Southland continues to focus on this
area with a dedicated team servicing the
Sport NZ targeted sports and providing
value to the remaining clubs and RSOs in
our region.
The challenge ahead for clubs and RSOs is
the fight for membership, to ensure people
continue playing their particular sport. The
sport and recreation options today are wide
ranging, so there is a need for organisations
to make their sport interesting, attractive
and welcoming for those wanting to try
it or actually join up. For some codes,
maintaining membership and current
numbers is a challenge and in some cases an
achievement in today’s environment.

KiwiSport
Investing in the Future
KiwiSport continues to be an incredible
success and continues to strengthen our
relationships with schools, particularly in the
year 1- 6 space.
We invested $206,000 across the sport
and recreation sector in the 2011/12 year
with 80% of this money allocated to six
programmes, specifically:
• Learn to Bike – Bike NZ and Cycling
Southland programme
• Swim Safe Southland programme –
rurally-based Learn to Swim programme
• Run Jump Throw – Athletics NZ based
programme
• 4 Sport Delivery – South City/Bluff and
Eastern Southland
• Hit n It – striking and controlling a ball
programme
• moveMprove – Gymsports NZ
foundation skills programme
Under the KiwiSport umbrella we have
allocated $20,000 of the KiwiSport funding
directly into the Wakatipu Basin by way
of a joint venture with Lakes Leisure Ltd.
Lakes Leisure delivers a variety of sport and
recreation programmes and physical activity
services from the QLDC Events Centre.
Sport Southland view this partnership as the
first step in establishing a long term presence
in the Wakatipu Basin.
We continue to be committed to supporting
Sport Otago in a strategically important
joint venture as part of a wider presence
in the Central Otago region. We view our
long term plans with Lakes Leisure Ltd as
complimentary to the work undertaken by
Sport Central.
A strong result
This year saw us undertake a full stakeholder
survey conducted by Sport NZ. We are
delighted that Sport Southland received a
78% satisfaction rating which is regarded as
a very strong result.
This survey was commissioned with the
following outcomes in mind:
• To understand more about stakeholders’
experiences and relationships with Sport
Southland
• To measure Sport Southland’s
performance in meeting stakeholder
needs and expectations
• To provide indications in terms of
how Sport Southland can better meet
the needs and expectations of its
stakeholders
• To ascertain stakeholders’ aspirations for
the future of Sport Southland.
Events and Active
Lifestyles
Our Events and Active Lifestyles teams
continue to deliver programmes, services
and support across a wide sector of our
community, positively impacting on a
high number of individuals, groups and
organisations.
The past year has been a busy and
productive one for the Active Lifestyle teams
in which we predominately concentrated
on our core health-related business and
physical activity programmes. The increasing
incidence of obesity and type 2 diabetes and
other physical inactivity-related conditions
has resulted in Sport Southland continuing to
be contracted as a provider of the nationally
recognised Green Prescription and related
Active Families programme. The demand
for both programmes during the year, with
full capacity delivery, demonstrated the need
for these services. We completed the year
by fulfilling 108% of our contracted referrals
from Southland based GPs with good levels
of patient satisfaction at the end of the year.
The Events team has been spread thinly
across our community given demand for
their expertise and services through out the
year. We have made a conscious decision to
identify and prioritise our involvement, with
a strong focus being centred on our four
icon events, being the BNZ Surf to City,
the rebranded Ascot Park Hotel Southland
Festival of Running, the MLT Moonshine
Trail and the Distinction Hotels Milford
Mountain Classic.
We are still committed to supporting other
major events in the region and continue to
play strong support roles as was evidenced
by our support with Rugby World Cup
2011 and taking a leadership role with the
management of the volunteer programme
in Southland
Thank you
Thank you to our community and the wider
sport and recreation sector, our dedicated
staff and board and to our sponsors and
partners.
To Our Staff
The success of any organisation relies
on the commitment of a cohesive team
with a can do attitude and big picture
vision to continue moving forward.
Sport Southland is no exception and,
for a team that works on behalf of the
community and the sport and recreation
sector, these qualities are important.
Sport Southland is the sum of its parts
and the great team it employs is the
heart of our organisation.
To Our Board
Thank you for your guidance and
perseverance in what has been a
challenging year where difficult decisions
have needed to be made. It was with
sadness that we fare welled Roger Eagles
following his retirement as a trustee and
the last four years as chair. We also lost
the services and expertise of Wayne
Evans following his departure in June.
We thank them both for their dedicated
contribution over many years.
To Our Sponsors and
Supporters
Your confidence in Sport Southland
to deliver results is reflected in your
willingness to partner with us. We offer
you our sincere appreciation and look
forward to you being a significant and
important part of our future success.

Sport Development
Sport Development
The year under review has been both
busy and challenging, but we have
continued to provide positive outcomes
for our sporting community.
Targeted Sports
Planning for the future
A great deal of work was undertaken with
six of Sport NZ’s seven targeted sports,
establishing Memoranda of Understandings
and annual plans and attaining baseline
data. An MoU and annual plan will be
implemented with the seventh sport –
rugby – following a full review of Rugby
Southland and subsequent report provided
by a Sport NZ-appointed independent.
Support was also given to rugby
administrators from Eastern and Northern
sub-unions in their bid to enter a combined
team in the Southland-wide premier
competition as a pathway for players in
those areas. The concept was supported by
the majority of member clubs and the team
finished a credible fourth in its inaugural year.
Non Targeted Sports
Supporting community sport
Work was undertaken with a number of
local sports organisations including target
shooting, powerboat racing, squash,
badminton and volleyball. It is hoped this
will continue in future, albeit perhaps on a
lesser scale.
A highlight was the support of the
Badminton World Federation’s conference
held in Queenstown and the launch of its
Shuttle Time programme to more than 400
local school children.
Another success story came from squash,
which bucked national trends to show a 20%
growth in playing numbers. Sport Southland
supported squash through KiwiSport funding
for coaching and local clubs, and through
our holiday sport programmes.
Yachting NZ was encouraged to include
Southland in its Learn to Sail programme and
their trainer yachts were used in conjunction
with the local clubs in Bluff (1 day), Riverton
(2 days) and Te Anau (2 days).
Primary Schools
Record numbers
In addition to the focus on primary schools
with KiwiSport programmes, support was
provided in many other ways.
Highlights included:
• 7 schools involved in PALs (Physical
Activity Leaders programme)
• A record 1015 children competed in
the Southland Primary School Athletics
Championships and 680 in the Cross
Country Championships
• 4 inter-school competition days held
for South City and Bluff schools; sports
including rugby, netball, basketball,
softball, rugby league and football.
These were financially supported by the
Invercargill City Council
• 8 Central Southland schools (316
students) involved in annual Winter
Tournament; sports including hockey,
football, rugby and netball
• Support of the Physical Education New
Zealand (PENZ) workshop in Invercargill
in June; Southland recorded more
participants than any other centre in the
country (35 teachers and sport providers).
Secondary Schools
Working collaboratively
Sport Southland worked closely with Fiona
Ward and Lisa Hay of Southland Secondary
School Sport on many great initiatives,
primarily focussed on getting more students
involved.
Highlights included:
• Ongoing involvement in the Invest in
Sport programme – Southland one of
only six regions included in Sport NZ’s
Growing Coaches pilot
• Forum between 20 RSOs and
secondary school sport co-ordinators
• Sport Southland representation on
the Southland Secondary School
Management Group and Student
Council
• Involvement in Southland Secondary
School Awards evening
• Continuation of College Games for less
active students; held over one day each
term with two sporting options per day
Up & At Em
Social sports
Targeted at 16-24year-olds and less active
adults, Up & At Em launched in late 2011.
Fourteen teams played in the first netball
competition held on Sunday afternoons
over a six-week period. In 2012 football
was offered and 10 teams were involved
across both sports. The competition was
enjoyable and competitive, with music and
fun as key themes.

Holiday Sports Programmes
More than 1500 attendances
The ILT Holiday Sports Programme in Invercargill maintained its numbers, with limited space
remaining an issue during the Stadium Southland redevelopment. Half or full day sportspecific
camps at some of Invercargill’s other great sporting facilities compensated for this.
The rural BNZ Holiday Sports Programmes remained popular and the addition of Riverton
has been positive. We are now offering programmes on nine of the 10 work days during the
school holidays.
• A two-day Learn to Bike programme for 34 children in December
• The Our Way of Life Water Fun Day in Riverton in January, with 43 children, and five
different water activities
• Seven sporting options provided for children at the Relay for Life
ILT Southland Sports Awards
ILT Skills Based Programme
Getting the fundamentals
right
The on-going redevelopment of Stadium
Southland meant the delivery of this
programme was once again transferred to
the Paul Skelt Memorial Badminton Hall or
at the participating schools. Five primary
schools and more than 300 children
partook in the programme in 2011/2012.
The programme is also now competing
with the GymSports NZ developed
moveMprove programme. With this
alternative being delivered in schools by
qualified instructors, Sport Southland will
look to support the latter in the future.
The ILT Skills Based Programme has been
very successful over a number of years in
assisting school children to gain confidence
in fundamental sporting skills and providing
practical training and support for educators.
2011 Sport Volunteer
Awards
Celebrating our sport
volunteers
The aim of these awards is to recognise the
efforts of sport volunteers of all different
backgrounds and experience.
The student category is open to school
aged coaches, while the general category
is for volunteer coaches with at least ten
years’ service. The lifetime category is for
volunteers who have contributed at least 25
years’ service.
Total nominations at 309 were up from
the 219 in 2010. The winners in the 2011
Sport NZ Sport Volunteer Awards were:
Student: Jason Keen
General: Angee Shand
Lifetime: John O’Connor

Coach Forums
Informative opportunities
Regional forums were once again held for
Southland’s representative level coaches
(and others) to engage in professional
development options to maximise their
potential. Key note speakers included Gary
Hermansson, Tom Conroy and Jeremy
Duncan.
Coaching breakfasts were also held, to offer
coaches from different codes a forum to
share ideas on a monthly basis.
Academy Southland Talent
Xcelerator Programme
Another outstanding year
The Academy Southland Talent Xcelerator
programme is a joint venture between
Excellence in Sport South Island, the
Community Trust of Southland, the
Invercargill Licensing Trust and Sport
Southland.
It is targeted at emerging young athletes
with the goal of fast-tracking them on a
performance pathway, increasing their
understanding and readiness for the
high performance environment, and for
becoming carded. Many of the Academy
athletes are now carded and emerging in
national programmes and achieving great
international results.
The programme has three levels (1, 2, and
Graduate Scholarship).
This year saw three past Academy
Southland athletes, Natasha Hansen, Eddie
Dawkins and Natalie Wiegersma, selected
to represent New Zealand at the London
2012 Olympic Games; an outstanding
result.
2012 athlete highlights:
Vaughan McCall (golf)
Won New Zealand Match Play and New
Zealand Stroke Play Championships, and
was runner-up in the Welsh Amateur
number of athletes.
His knowledge and expertise have certainly
been hugely helpful to the athletes, who
continue to learn plenty from Simon.
Dietician Aimee Burns also works with
a variety of athletes and her experience
has made her an asset to the Academy
Southland team, enabling us to provide a
wide range of services to our athletes.

KiwiSport is a government-funded initiative
to support sport for school-aged children.
All KiwiSport funding must aim to:
• Increase the number of school-aged
children participating in organised sport
• Increase the availability and accessibility
of sport opportunities for all school-aged
children
• Support children in developing skills that
will enable them to participate effectively
in sport
Sport Southland is responsible for distributing
one part of the fund – the Regional Partnership
Fund (RPF). The end of the financial year
(i.e. to 30 June 2012) signalled the end of
the first period of KiwiSport funding.
role is one of coordination and the delivery component is generally undertaken by sporting
bodies. Critical to the implementation is the achievement of the three KiwiSport outcomes
and the addressing of locally identified barriers to children playing sport, which are:
• Cost • Transport • Lack of Skills • Sport Support
Southland
• Significantly improve the overall skill level of young school children in all of Southland
by the age of 10, thereby increasing the likelihood of them remaining in sport for their
2011/2012 Highlight
In late December 2011 the Learn to Swim programme was awarded with a National Water
Safety Award for Education
2012 - 2015
During the period under review Sport Southland was required to undergo further
community consultation to develop an investment plan for July 1 2012 through to June 30
The weather was ideal. Numbers of cyclists
were down an estimated 700, but a 23%
increase in numbers of runners and walkers
helped offset this.
MLT Moonshine Trail
Changes prove positive
In 2012 the event attracted 296 mountain
bikers, runners and walkers. Run courses
were changed to eliminate the logistics
of bussing competitors to the start lines
and a new 5km run/walk sub-event was
successfully introduced.
The event was incident-free even with
challenging drizzly conditions. A major
survey of competitors was held to explore
options to grow the MLT Moonshine Trail
to its previous pre-eminent status.

MLT Moonshine Trail
“LOVED IT! It was my second year at it and the run was just fantastic. I didn’t do it to win, it was the motivation to get fit enough to run
it and enjoy the day. Everything else was brilliant and a well organised event. See you all again next year!”
BNZ Active Walkers KiwiSeniors
Thank you so much for organising the fantastic trip to Mount Linton on April 12. For me the walk was a bit of a challenge but it was
worth every bit of effort to lunch in such a tranquil setting as Rock Hut. The scenery on the walk was amazing. It was a real privilege to
visit such a fabulous place. Thank you again.
SportStart Southland: Learn to Swim
“Our Central Schools AGM was held recently and as part of discussions regarding our programmes for 2011 was the overwhelming
positive comments relating to the swimming programme provided to our area. Please pass onto all those involved in the provision of
such an initiative our sincere thanks. We certainly value the ongoing support being provided to our schools and certainly appreciate the
time, finances and energy required to ensure such projects can come to fruition.”
Julian Ineson, Central Principals President
“I was not confident in the water before these swimming lessons. I feel more confident now. I feel more confident now because I know
how to swim better. The teachers taught us how to swim better. I already knew the basics such as floating and gliding. I have learnt
the proper techniques for freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke. When I went to camp I was fine (as I had a life jacket). I was able to
have more fun because I was not thinking that I was going to drown or anything like that. I was excited and relaxed.”
SportStart Southland: 4 Sport Delivery in South City and Bluff
“Your team do an amazing job! Participation is virtually 100 percent and the boys are actively engaged for the whole hour. Watching
all the students developing their skills is very exciting and hopefully rewarding to their wonderful coaches. We are very grateful to be
included in KiwiSport. Many of our students, for various reasons, do not have the opportunities to participate in team sports. The
KiwiSport programme is invaluable, not only teaching the students new skills and developing team-manship but the tournament at the
end of each term gives them a taste of competition. Your coaches this year have all been exceptional and we thoroughly appreciate the
time they take to help our students. Many thanks and well done!”
Our Way of Life: Riverton Water Fun Day
“Thanks very much for an awesome day (at the Riverton Water Fun Day). Jardyn and Rayarn had a blast yachting and surfing. Rayarn
really enjoyed the yachting, something we as parents probably would never have taken them to do and Jardyn was encouraged by Jess
to take up surfing as a hobby because of his natural abilities. Unbelievable how the day was inexpensive yet very, very productive. Well
done to you and your team for the excellent ideas, opportunities and organisation...can’t wait for more water fun days!!”
Active Lifestyles
“Thank you so much for leading the exercise breaks at the Invercargill Cardiac Seminar. The exercise breaks are such an important part
of the day’s programme because there is a lot of sitting and you led it with a lot of style! Fantastic to see everyone get involved and
share a laugh or two! Thanks again for helping us out.”
