CRICKET SCHOLARSHIP
with the
UXBRIDGE CRICKET CLUB
(London)

ILT Scholarship Background
Southland Cricket has created a formal partnership with the Uxbridge Cricket Club in
England resulting in the establishment of a subsidized scholarship for a Southland cricket
player to travel, play and coach cricket in London commencing in April and returning in
September each year.
The purpose of establishing this annual scholarship is to provide an opportunity for one
of Southland’s leading young cricketers to accelerate their cricket development and skill
base playing an extremely competitive level of cricket in the Middlesex league.
Southland Cricket recognizes there are long term advantages to this relationship as the
association attempts to strengthen the representative playing base at Hawke Cup level
while providing a professional development component to the successful recipients
cricket career.
The scholarship recipient will play league cricket each Saturday and Sunday with regular
mid week invitation matches resulting in playing a potential 40 - 50 matches over the
five and half month English season. This level of playing commitment, while quite normal
in a semi professional English environment will accelerate the players learning curve and
is expected to have a positive influence on their performance.
The Middlesex league rules do not allow current first class players (other than those
contracted to the Middlesex County) therefore the majority of overseas players
competing are potential first class players who need the experience to progress their
careers. The quality of young player that has come through the league in recent years
can be summed up in two names Adam Gilchrist and Surav Ganguly – recent captains of
their international sides.
The Uxbridge Cricket Club is inundated each year with requests to play at Uxbridge
from overseas players but most are unknown to the club, therefore the relationship
between Uxbridge and Southland has been created to establish a long term relationship
with a guarantee of quality and responsibility.
The Uxbridge Cricket Club are prepared to provide the scholarship recipient with
accommodation and work, mostly in the form of coaching which will provide sufficient
income to live comfortably and also be flexible to play league cricket on Saturday and
Sundays along with mid week invitation matches. In return, the Uxbridge Cricket Club
expect the cricketer to be of suitable quality to be successful in the Middlesex league
and influence the result of matches. In addition the Southland cricket player is required
to have a minimum coaching standard to undertake a club coaching role. The Southland
Cricket Association coordinate all the arrangements and provide a return international
airfare and appropriate insurance cover for the successful applicant.
2

Recent minimum guidelines introduced by the England Cricket Board (ECB) have
resulted in all cricket coaches in England who work with children at cricket clubs to
produce a clean “criminal records” report when employed to coach.
It is a prerequisite for each scholarship applicant to produce and attach the relevant
police report satisfying this requirement. This is now a standard employment condition
in most commercial organizations here in New Zealand and overseas. The relevant
documentation is available from the Invercargill police station or by accessing a copy
from the internet on www.justice.govt.nz
In addition please ensure the appropriate and current coaching qualification is supplied
when forwarding an application form.
Uxbridge Cricket Club
The Uxbridge Cricket Club is one of the principal cricket clubs within the Middlesex
County Cricket league which is the main cricket competition for amateur clubs in the
county of Middlesex.
The league is where all aspiring and current professional players play their non –
professional cricket. The professional players signed to the Middlesex County team are
members of clubs playing in this league. Therefore it is quite common to play against
“current” county players.
Uxbridge Cricket Club recently had Andrew Strauss as their county player. Now he has
reached the national side, the club obviously does not have his services, but he is an
example of how young players are encouraged to learn their game in the English league
structure.
In recent years there have been a number of New Zealand national players in the
Middlesex league noticeably Chris Cairns plus numerous players from all international
cricket playing countries who go on to play first class cricket.
The Uxbridge Cricket Club run junior teams ranging from ages 10 – 18 years with four
men’s senior teams playing on Saturdays and two on Sundays.
The club is also the second home ground for the Middlesex County team when they are
not playing at Lords and host four day, limited over and 20/20 county matches at the
club grounds.
Uxbridge is more than just a cricket club,in fact it is a significant business entity
approximately 30 kilometers outside of London. The club boasts a restaurant, two bars,
three squash courts, ten tennis courts, a bowling green and two large playing fields that
house cricket and soccer grounds along with fully self contained accommodation for
the club manager and his family plus the ground staff.
An Introduction to the Uxbridge Cricket Club
Uxbridge is a pleasant commuter town situated about 40 minutes from Central London
and about 20 minutes from the Heathrow Airport.
The history of the town dates back to the Middle Ages when it became important as a
coach stop on the main road from Oxford to London. It is now an important
commercial centre with the headquarters of many international companies.
The Uxbridge Cricket Club has a similarly rich heritage having been established nearly
250 years ago. The clubs importance in the local community is reflected in its success on
and off the field. In the 2005 season it has supported and encouraged a thriving colts
section with over 100 young players as well as forging an important link with the local
educational college.
The Uxbridge Cricket Club was formed in 1789 and is the oldest club in Middlesex and
during its life time many famous players played for and against the club. Perhaps the
most famous in the early years being Bernard Bosanquet the innovator of the “googly”.
Through out its history the Uxbridge Cricket Club has had a keen involvement with the
overseas game undertaking tours of Australia, Barbados and the first ever tour by an
English club to Holland. It has also entertained visiting sides from India, Australia and the
West Indies.
In the early 1970’s the club relocated from its original ground to its custom built
location in Park Road and a new era commenced. Uxbridge were founder members of
the Thames Valley League which contained clubs from Middlesex, Buckinghamshire,
Berkshire and Hampshire. The club enjoyed several successful seasons culminating in
winning the championship in 1982 which at the time enjoyed the playing services of
Richard Hoskin from Southland.
The past thirty years has seen many young players of differing abilities enjoy the summer
at Uxbridge. These players have in the main come from Australia, New Zealand and
South Africa and have generally gone on to represent their first class states in their
countries competitions.
In 1980 another highly significant event took place when Middlesex played their first
home county championship fixture outside of Lords at Uxbridge. The original
motivation for this move from Lords was the bicentenary test match, however the game
against Derbyshire proved so successful that the next eight seasons they became regular
fixtures and culminated in County week with two championship games and a one day
match. These matches only confirmed what the Uxbridge bowlers had known that the
pitches at the ground were the best in the county, a fact borne out by the succession of
big scores made during the championship games. Middlesex also held the ground in deep
affection as they twice confirmed their championship triumphs during these games.
As well as attracting overseas players to the club the Middlesex connection helped
introduce many potential county and England hopefuls to Uxbridge because their
5

mentors at Lords believed that it was only by playing in these conditions could they
really learn their trade. Amongst the most successful of these aspirants were Norman
Cowans and most recently the star introduction to the England team Andrew Strauss.
In 1989 Uxbridge made the move to the Middlesex League, a major decision which was
to bring even more competitive cricket to Park Road. The team has more than held its
own in this competition and has had the added success of reaching the Evening Standard
club final played at the Oval cricket ground in 2000.
Playing History of Cricket in Southland
Over the 108 years of Southland Crickets' history there have been many memorable
performances that have established the region as one of the most highly respected
District Associations in the country and this has been created through its tenures
defending the District Associations’ Hawke Cup.
Southland was the original holder of Lord Hawke Cup when it was first played for in
1910. Then it was competed for on a tournament basis until 1913 when South Auckland
lost it to Wanganui in the first of the challenge based series.
In 1924, elimination matches were introduced to decide who were to be the challengers
each year, and this format has remained.
Southland has had two significant periods with the Hawke Cup. Between March 1973
and February 1977 Southland defended the Cup on 14 occasions. In this era of New
Zealand District supremacy Southland generated some wonderful cricket players
including NZ representatives in Gren and Jack Alabaster, Robert (Jumbo) Anderson,
Brian McKecknie, Richard Webb and Graeme Thompson along with personalities such
as Kevin O’Conner and Robbie Hill.
Southland defended the Hawke Cup again for 15 challenges between February 1989 and
March 1992. During this campaign Southland unearthed a number of high quality cricket
players and provided a stepping stone for many players to represent Otago at 1 st class
level and higher. These players included, Garth Dawson, Kevin Burns, John Lindsay, John
Wilson, Richard Hoskin, Peter Skelt and Peter Hills. It was significant that Otago cricket
was historically at its strongest in terms of winning national Shell Cup and Shell One day
competitions during this time frame.

Southlands' Hawke Cup Record
