Critical Incident Management
Emergency procedures to manage each identified risk
1.
Child sustains an injury.
2.
Child falling into the creek.
3.
Child getting lost
1. Marshal provides assistance.
2. Team manager alerted via speaker system.
3. Passes child over to team manager.
4. St John’s first aid provided
1. Marshals act to support child and retrieve them.
2. Track diverted to account for hazard.
3. If retrieved, child brought to Admin.
4. Team manager notified via sound system.
5. First aid provided should it be necessary.
6. Additional marshals positioned in high concern area.
7. Other races continue with track altered.
8. If not retrieved, police notified of potential drowning
and scene of slipping left undisturbed. Racing will stop
for the day.
9. Team manager notified to inform school and follow
internal school procedures from there.
1. Manager suspects a child is lost.
2. Gather zone group together.
3. Undertake a count.
4. Establish missing person/s.
5. Determine any medical factors that may be
contributing
6. Question witnesses to establish the circumstances of
loss and point last seen.
7. Determine potential people who may have this child
e.g. parents, supporting caregivers.
8. Ensure safety of group and suitable supervision.
9. Appoint preliminary searchers (adults), set a time
period for their sweep, determine the initial area to be
checked.
10. Carry out a search of the immediate area, starting at
the high risk and high probability places, and working
back to low risk places. Remember to check toilets.

Call the child’s name, use whistles etc.
11. If child still not found alert the police (111) and
school’s Principal.
12. Ensure group remains calm and is suitable
supervision.
13. Undertake a further area search based first on
previous area (different people rechecking) then
expand to include outside high risk zones, attractions
that could draw a child etc.
14. Get someone to begin to document what has
happened.
15. Inform police of everything necessary when they
arrive.
