Friday 13 November 2009<br />
<strong>Southland</strong> <strong>Secondary</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> <strong>Sport</strong> will again acknowledge the top secondary school<br />
male and female from each nominated code in <strong>Southland</strong>. This will be done in conjunction<br />
with the Regional <strong><strong>Sport</strong>s</strong> Organisations.<br />
7 categories are included in the <strong>Southland</strong> <strong>Secondary</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> Awards.<br />

7. <strong>Southland</strong> Future Champions (acknowledgement for male and female regarded as<br />
the top secondary school performers in their sport)<br />
The criteria for each <strong>of</strong> these categories and nomination forms follow. Your nominations are<br />
welcomed. Please use only the nomination forms provided.<br />
A reminder for our <strong>Southland</strong> sportsperson <strong>of</strong> the year awards there are awards for:<br />
1. Senior Male sportsperson <strong>of</strong> the year (Years 11-13)<br />
2. Senior Female sportsperson <strong>of</strong> the year (Years 11-13)<br />
3. Junior Male sportsperson <strong>of</strong> the year (Years 9 &10)<br />
4. Junior Female sports person <strong>of</strong> the year. (Years 9 & 10)<br />
On the evening and so that some interest is generated, each finalist will be <strong>of</strong>fered a maximum <strong>of</strong><br />
one minute to inform the audience <strong>of</strong> their current achievements. Should they not accept a<br />
maximum <strong>of</strong> 2 sentences will be read out for each finalist. All Awards & presentations will be<br />
made on the evening.<br />
The Invercargill Licensing Trust and the Community Trust <strong>of</strong> <strong>Southland</strong> are our sponsors for<br />
<strong>Southland</strong> <strong>Secondary</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> <strong>Sport</strong> and are so the <strong><strong>Sport</strong>s</strong> Awards.<br />

1. <strong>Southland</strong> <strong>Secondary</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> <strong><strong>Sport</strong>s</strong> Awards<br />
Criteria for these Awards<br />
Nominations for athletes who have performances in sports that do not have events<br />
sanctioned may be made and will be considered. Although we will not guarantee to give<br />
an award to any one <strong>of</strong> these sports, past experience suggests that several awards will<br />
be made for outstanding performance in a wide range <strong>of</strong> sports that secondary school<br />
students enjoy.<br />
A. Eligibility<br />
a) Nominees will have been under 19 on 1 January 2009.<br />
b) Nominees will, in 2009, have represented their school in the sport in which<br />
they are nominated or, if this is not the case, the school principal will have<br />
nominated them for regional selection.<br />
c) Nominees will have met the attendance requirements for nomination for the<br />
regional awards, if any, or, in the absence <strong>of</strong> these, will have been enrolled in<br />
and attending school on 31 October 2009.<br />
d) Performances during the period which the criteria for the regional awards<br />
specify, or, if there are none, from 1 November 2008 to 31 October 2009, will be<br />
the sole basis for nomination and selection.<br />

4. An Award to a Person with a Disability<br />
Up to 4 awards are available for athletes who have an identified physical, sensory or<br />
intellectual disability that is recognised by any one <strong>of</strong> Parafed, NZ; Special Olympic<br />
Movement; NZ Deaf <strong>Sport</strong> Association; or NZ Blind <strong><strong>Sport</strong>s</strong> Association and have<br />

5. Invercargill Licensing Trust Award for Participation<br />
Two awards are available each year. One award will be made to a male and one to a<br />
female secondary school student who has shown participation and genuine aptitude<br />
across a wide selection <strong>of</strong> sports. The sports eligible are those sponsored by ILT and<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered in partnership with <strong>Southland</strong> <strong>Secondary</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> <strong>Sport</strong>, as detailed in the<br />
Calendar <strong>of</strong> Events each year.<br />
Each recipient <strong>of</strong> the award will receive merchandise and a plaque.<br />
Nominations are to be made through each nominee’s secondary school on the forms<br />
provided. A detailed record <strong>of</strong> participation and achievement for the current year will be<br />
required.<br />
This award has been developed because in recent years there has been evidence <strong>of</strong><br />
many students ‘having a go’ in many events. While many students excel, and are<br />
currently acknowledged in the SSSS awards, some currently miss out on winning<br />
awards because they place more emphasis on participation rather than excellence.<br />
A group <strong>of</strong> finalists will be selected from nominations received, then the winners will be<br />
named on the night <strong>of</strong> the awards.<br />
This award is available to be presented at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the judging panel.<br />

6. Fairplay Acknowledgement<br />
Nominations are received from each school for one individual or one team who has/have<br />
displayed Fairplay beyond that which is expected. The award will be presented at the<br />
sports awards and can also be presented at a later date at the school if so desired.<br />

7. Team Achievement Acknowledgement<br />
Please record your school sports teams’ performances this year at events outside the<br />
local competition. Achievements will be acknowledged and presented at the <strong><strong>Sport</strong>s</strong><br />
Awards Supper on Friday 9th November.<br />
The criteria is that teams must have a top 4 placing at a national event or top 2 placing<br />
at a South Island event. A trophy will also be awarded to the <strong>Southland</strong> Team <strong>of</strong> the<br />
