Our grading system 

Some manufacturers use a star system. Others use numeric grading. 

To avoid confusion and assist you with choice, 

Sportsmans Warehouse has introduced its own grading system.

Type 

English willow 

• English willow is a softer wood with better dampening properties, 

giving the batsman: 

(a) less vibration on impact, and 

(b) improved feel and control, enabling him to ‘pick the gaps’ 

more accurately. 

• The highest quality bats are made from English willow. 

• It is light and has very good rebounding properties. 

• It performs better. 

Kashmir willow 

• This is heavier, because the wood fibres are denser.

1. Wood grain on face is straight with at least four grains visible. 

May have some red wood on the edge and/or a small knot on the 

edge or back. 

2. At least four straight grains on bat’s face. Maybe some blemishes, 

pin knots or ‘speck’. Perhaps more red wood on edges; only cosmetic. 

3. At least four, not perfectly straight grains on face. Some small knots 

and/or a small ‘butterfly’ stain and/or more prominent ‘speck’. 

Up to half of bat face may be darker, which is only cosmetic. 

4. Any number of grains visible. Over half the wood is darker; may 

also have butterfly stains, but be very strong. Possibly more ‘speck’. 

• It is less durable, because it is a harder wood and tends to 

break more easily than English willow. 

• It is cheaper than English willow bats. 

• Because of the nature of the wood, it usually requires less care. 

2. Pick-up 

Pick-up refers to how the bat feels, relative to its actual 

weight, on the back-lift of the swing. 

Think of a sledgehammer that has its head on the ground and its handle sticking up in the air. 

You try to wield it like a cricket bat, but It feels uncomfortably heavy. 

Now imagine the same sledgehammer, but the hammerhead has been moved up the handle 

towards where you’re gripping it. It’s the same hammer with the same weight, but the 

back-lift is lighter. 

That, in a nutshell, is pick-up: the relative position of the thickest part of the bat 

affects how it feels.

The degree of bow in a bat is a personal choice. 

Star international batsmen use bats with varying 

degrees of bow. 

A noticeable bow: 

• acts as a counter-balance, raising the centre of gravity 

of the cricket bat, thereby assisting pick-up. 

• helps with control of strokes, as the player’s hands 

are positioned more in front of the ball during contact. 

• acts like a scoop, to produce more lofted (higher) 

shots, which do however run the risk of being caught.

DO - Prepare the bat carefully. 

- Store the bat during the off-season in a cool atmosphere, 

away from excessive heat or damp. 

- Inspect the bat regularly for damage during play and repair it promptly. 

AVOID - Keeping the bat in a vehicle’s boot or interior for prolonged periods. 

DON’T Expose the bat to extreme temperatures. 

- Over-oil it. This is more dangerous than under-oiling. 

Over-oiling adds weight, spoils driving power and may cause rot. 

- Stand bat in oil. 

- A low a bat to become damp. 

- Misuse a bat or treat it carelessly off the pitch 

(at nets or in change-rooms). 

- Continue to play with a damaged bat. This wi l aggravate the damage 

to a point where the bat may be beyond repair. 

- Use cheap cricket ba ls. 

- Use a bat in match conditions less than two weeks after purchase. 

Important 

Because of the nature of the game of cricket, it is impractical to try to give bats a conventional 

guarantee. Although the raw materials used for our bats are of the highest quality, the durability of 

a natural material such as wi low is diffi cult to predict. 

Much depends on the treatment it receives from its owner. 

Consequently we are unable to accept responsibility for damage caused by misuse, 

e.g. over-oiling, failure to knock in, use of cheap balls, etc. 

Bring your bat in fo repair as soon as you detect any damage. 

It you neglect to treat the damage, we might not be able to repair the bat at a later stage.

How to choose protective gear 

Protection rating 

Choose the protective wear that is rated for your level of play. Juniors use protective 

wear with lower ratings, while pros use top-rated protective wear.

Modern protective wear is highly technical equipment that has been refined over many years. 

Refinements include stronger and lighter materials, breathability, improved cushioning and comfort, 

as well as enhanced durability and lifespan. 

Ambidextrous 

Some leg guards can be used on either leg, others require the batsman to select a set of leg guards 

depending on whether he is left- or right-handed. 

Strap thickness 

In general, thinner straps are less comfortable, as they can dig into the batsman’s skin. 

The right size pads 

Ensure that the knee roll sits directly over your knee. This gives the highest possible protection and best 

manoeuvrability during batting and when running between the wickets.

degree of protection and comfort, flexibility, 

moisture-management, airflow and grip of palm.

Warning for bowlers: When batting, ensure that you wear excellent quality gloves 

because serious injury to the fingers of the bowling hand can hamper the 

performance of a bowler and his team. 

Note on wicketkeeper’s gloves: Do not wear too-large or too-small gloves 

as they will be uncomfortable and could lead to injury as the padding 

will not be positioned over the correct areas of the hand. 

Care of gloves 

• Gloves cannot be washed, as this will damage the materials used. 

• Allow gloves to dry naturally, avoiding direct sunlight as this causes leather to crack. 

• Cotton inners can be worn to absorb sweat and keep the gloves clean inside.

Helmets 

Important features 

The most advanced helmets offer: ultra-lightweight design to prevent neck ache; moisture-management lining; a peak shaped to give good 

peripheral vision; sufficient vents for the adequate airflow that is especially important in warmer climates; and comfortable, well-fitting chin-straps. 

Other features to consider include: breathable comfort foam padding, sometimes with a removable forehead pad; and an adjustable size band to 

closely customize the fit, prevent rocking and allow juniors to adjust the fit as they grow. 

Choose a protection rating suitable for your level of play, but always bear in mind how important 

it is to safeguard your head against balls that can come at you at over 144 kilometres per hour.

Size of helmet 

A well-fitting helmet is worn with the peak protruding horizontally from the line 

of the eyebrows. It should feel firm, but comfortable, with no excessive movement 

in any direction. Keep the chin-strap fastened for comfort and security. 

To assess your size, measure your head’s circumference from the middle of the 

forehead (just above the eyebrows), around the side (just above the ears) to the 

bulge at the back of the head. Over time, the internal padding will mould to the 

shape of the head. Always ensure that your adjustable steel or titanium grille is 

set so that a cricket ball cannot fit through it, as serious injury could occur 

when batting or fielding close in.

The technology of cricket balls 

Structure 

Traditional cricket balls consist of a core of cork and rubber, covered with layers of tightly wound string (which is normally made from wool) and small, flat 

strips of cork. This is covered by an outer leather case (of four or two pieces) with a slightly raised sewn seam where one hemisphere meets the other. 

Four-piece balls, which give a better feel off the blade of the bat, are always used in test and provincial matches. 

Two-piece balls are usually more suitable for junior use and lower leagues. 

Cheap balls, with a non-cork-rubber centre, can be too hard and tend to damage bats, 

particularly high-quality English willow bats.

good bat. It is accepted that a four-piece ball has less lateral 

movement through the air, i.e. it swings less.

Full-spike shoes 

These are predominantly

Multi-function/convertible shoes 

One can remove spikes and use cleats to increase 

the functionality of the shoe. The configurations depend 

on the surface underfoot and the role of the user. 

Full-spike configuration: Mainly for bowling. 

Half-spike configuration: One removes the heel spikes 

and replaces them with cleats, creating a half-spike shoe 

suitable for batting, fielding and medium-pace or spin bowling. 

Non-spike configuration: Remove all spikes and replace with 

cleats. Such a full-cleat shoe is suitable for batting and fielding,
