We have much pleasure and satisfaction in presenting to you the Report of the Ministerial
Taskforce on Sport, Fitness and Leisure. The Taskforce has critically considered the wide
range of public submissions, examined current structures and perspectives in sport, fitness
and leisure, and responded to the need for change.
We present our recommendations through this report. The enclosed recommendations are
not a quick fix solution to address acute problems. Implicit in a sense of responsibility to
future generations is the vision and commitment from the Government and all major
education, health and recreation and sport organisations.
With substantial extra funding of recreation and sport this sector will play a critical role in a
prosperous New Zealand – in health, physical wellbeing, social cohesion, self-esteem and
national pride.
We appreciate the responsibility we have held, individually and collectively, in fulfilling the
Taskforce objectives. We fully endorse the proposed strategies, structures and processes
outlined in this report to more fully develop sport, fitness and leisure in New Zealand – with
the consequent development of a more active and healthier nation.
