• Lottery Health Research to improve the quality of New Zealand health care
through research ($3.11 million).
• Lottery Marae Heritage and Facilities to develop and conserve marae
facilities ($5.79 million).
• Lottery Welfare Individuals with Disabilities Subcommittee to empower
individuals with disabilities to access and participate within the community
($14.28 million).
• Lottery Youth to develop the life skills of young people and to enhance their
quality of life ($5.22 million).
• The Minister of Internal Affairs to distribute for charitable purposes on a
discretionary basis ($0.35 million).
• The Hillary Commission for Sport, Fitness and Leisure to improve the quality
of life of all New Zealanders through participating and achieving in sport
and active leisure ($27.08 million).
• High Performance Sport Preparation Fund to support the development of
high performance athletes and teams (this fund is allocated to the Hillary
Commission to administer) ($3.81 million).
• The New Zealand Film Commission to contribute to the creation of cultural
capital in Aotearoa/New Zealand through popular feature films ($8.8
million).
In the 1999/00 financial year the Lottery Community Facilities programme
allocated $6.598 million for recreational and sporting organisations and
initiatives, the Lottery General programme allocated $7.919 million for outdoor
safety organisations and $4.627m for a series of one-off projects which
included allocations for some recreational and sporting organisations and
initiatives.
3.5.3 Community Trusts
Community Trusts exist throughout New Zealand with many formed in the late
1980s under the Trustee Banks Restructuring Act 1988. This has been
repealed and replaced with the Community Trusts Act 1999. Collectively the
Community Trusts, have assets of over $ 2 billion and donated approximately
$92 million to various community groups in the financial year to 31 March
2000. An estimated $30 million of this total was directed towards recreational
and sporting organisations. For example, in Southland the Community Trust in
the 1999/00 year allocated $9,662,348 in grants to 381 organisations. This
total included $1.55 million for recreation and sport organisations. The Eastern
and Central Community Trust in the 1999/00 year allocated $2,608,576, with
$1.21 million for recreation and sport organisations.
