14,000–15,000 clubs. National Governing Bodies have the responsibility for the
future good of their member organisations and individual members and are the
central organisations that enforce the rules associated with their respective
activities.
The delivery of recreation and sport opportunities, competitions, programmes
and events is governed by national recreation and sporting bodies. Currently,
each has varying functions and key responsibility areas and vary in size from
completely voluntary organisations to substantial “commercial” bodies with a
complement of professional staff. Recreation and sport organisations are
governed by either elected or voluntary board positions.
The combined resources of the 83 largest national recreation and sport organisations
(excluding New Zealand Rugby Union and New Zealand Cricket)
including club membership feature:
• Total affiliated membership 1,205,666
• Total national level paid staff (part and full-time) 355
• Total income $48,519,188
With the addition of the New Zealand Rugby Union and New Zealand Cricket
combined resources are as follows:
• Total affiliated membership 1,422,635
• Total national level paid staff (part and full-time) 436
• Total income $129,376,930
Not included in the above statistics are the many thousands of New Zealanders
who have purchased a fishing license for recreational purposes.
3.4.4 Regional Sport Trusts
Regional Sports Trusts (RSTs) began forming in the mid-1980s to support the
development and delivery of sport at a regional level and from the late 1980s
to help achieve some Hillary Commission goals on a regional basis. Each of the
17 Trusts is an autonomous, non-profit organisation established by a trust deed
and governed by a Board of Trustees. The Trusts are currently contracted by
the Hillary Commission to provide a delivery system for community leisure and
sport programmes throughout New Zealand.
3.4.5 Other Organisations
The sport, fitness and leisure sector currently encompasses a diverse range of
organisations. Some of these include:
• New Zealand Recreation Association
The New Zealand Recreation Association (NZRA) seeks to meet the
professional needs of people and organisations associated with all aspects of
recreation, leisure, parks, aquatic, conservation and sport service delivery.
