THIS WEEK’S COVER
North Hobart’s Tim
Peterson and Glenorchy
Coach Byron Howard met
last week to promote
‘Umpiring is everyone’s
Business’ with leading
TSL field umpire Tim Ikin.
From the editor
The Wrest Point State League continues
to deliver some fascinating results and
northern football fans are turning Blue with
delight over the early form of Launceston.
The Windsor Park mob has established an
almost unassailable lead at the top of the
ladder after only 6 rounds. Undefeated
and with a mighty percentage break they
are effectively 3 games clear on top.
Also, with only 1 more game to play in
southern Tasmania against Lauderdale
this weekend, it will be very difficult to
dislodge the Blues from top spot and the
all important home second semi final.
The contest for the remaining births in the
finals is much tougher. However, the 5
southern Clubs are providing each other
with really keen competition currently and
4 of them could realistically fill the other
spots up for grabs in the 2011 finals series.
The RECORD’s reading highlights include
Shaun Young’s analysis of the first ‘Super
Saturday’ of Wrest Point State League
for 2011 and Our Great Game highlights
the ‘Umpiring is Everybody’s Business’
campaign.
Have a great ‘Super Saturday’ at the footy
VIEW FROM HERE | Season 2011 starting to hot up
It’s time to review the progress of what is proving to be a fascinating season of the Wrest Point
Tasmanian State League.
Will round seven serve up any upsets that football
pundits might not have anticipated? Let’s have a
look at the five games for this week.
Burnie v Hobart - Burnie are coming off a 56 point
loss to ladder leaders Launceston and have been
a little inconsistent to date, Burnie can ill afford
to lose at home as they view their home ground
as a fortress for visiting teams and this will be no
different when Hobart makes the trek up to the
Coast. Hobart on the other hand are coming off a
win against highly fancied Glenorchy whereby they
overcome the Southern Magpies by 27 points last
week, Hobart have been competitive all year in
testing most teams they have played for a sustained
period of time each game. Can the Tigers leave
the Coast with the four points or can Burnie stay in
touch with the five?
Lauderdale v Launceston - Launceston are certainly
touted as premiership contenders and easily disposed
of Burnie last week. Coach Anthony Taylor
would be keen for the Blues to keep their final away
trip South for the home and away season unblemished.
Lauderdale on the other hand are sitting
sixth on the ladder and have undoubtedly improved
on their 2010 season, the Southern Bombers would
be placing significant importance on this game as
it will be a very good indicator on exactly how much
they have improved.
North Launceston v North Hobart - No doubt the
game of the round, the Northern Bombers on their
day can beat anyone and will be keen to grab a victory
over a team placed higher on the ladder than
them. On the other hand the North Hobart Demons
have demonstrated already that they will be right in
the mix, they had the opportunity to demonstrate
this even further last weekend when they had plenty
of chances against Clarence but fell short by 17
points. Many football pundits believe the Demons
have the best mid field in the competition.
Glenorchy v Devonport - The battle of the two Magpies.
Devonport will be keen to be super competitive
given that they are coming up against some
of their former team mates. Glenorchy have lost
their last two games and will want to restore their
winning ways. Will the former Devonport players
play a leading role in the game or can the Northern
Magpies limit their influence?
Clarence v South Launceston - Clarence is currently
sitting third on the ladder; the game may provide an
opportunity for Coach Brett Geappen to try different
structures. New South coach Mitch Hills will be
keen for his side to be more competitive and not
let Clarence run away with a big win. Will Clarence
grab a big percentage boosting win or will South
Launceston restrict Clarence’s ability to do so?
PROFILE
Todd Willing
Todd Willing has become an important part of Hobart’s young side
over the past 2 seasons. Todd is a ruckman that can push forward
and cause headaches for opposition defenders. Todd uses his size
to advantage and has very good foot skills for a big man. Todd was
recruited from Lindisfarne Football Club where he was a dominant
player in the SFL competition. He also spent time playing with the
North Launceston Football Club prior to moving south. With a good
group of young players coming through Todd will play a vital role in
leading Hobart to some success in the years to come.
OUR GREAT GAME | Umpiring is Everyone’s Business
During this round of Wrest Point State League football and across all Tasmanian football
competitions we will be promoting the ‘Umpiring is Everyone’s Business’ campaign to support
umpires at the community level of the game.
The campaign emphasises that everyone involved in
Australian Football - coaches, players, administrators,
parents and supporters - has a role to play in creating
a positive match day environment.
The AFL, AFL Coaches Association, AFL Players
Association and umpires have come together to
help deliver the message to suburban and country
leagues. AFL General Manager Football Operations
Adrian Anderson said that while participation numbers
continue to grow, the corresponding demand for
umpires is not being met. Mr Anderson said:
The Australian Football community needs to act now
to ensure football at community level continues to
flourish. In recent years, nationally there has been an
89 per cent increase in the umpiring appointments
required and only a 13 per cent growth in umpires
which places enormous pressure on community
leagues. We know people choose to be umpires for
the love of the game and we need to work together
to ensure umpires are respected and encouraged
just like players, coaches and supporters. Abuse
and intimidation of umpires from coaches, players
and spectators turns umpires away from the game.
Nationally the annual umpiring turnover is between
20 to 25 percent.
While the “Umpiring is Everyone’s Business”
campaign is being launched this month across
Australia, it will continue throughout 2011. The
activities focus on using influential figures at all levels
of the game to influence the profile of umpiring and
encourage everyone involved to take responsibility
for their behavior on match day. The campaign will
feature:
• AFL senior and assistant coaches umpiring junior
matches. Coaches who have already exchanged
the coaches box for the whistle are Paul Roos, Mick
Malthouse, Mark Neeld, Alan Richardson, Stephen
Silvagni and Leon Cameron.
• AFL senior coaches and AFL umpires shaking hands
before each match in the 2011 season. Many of the
state and community leagues across Australia have also
implemented similar initiatives.
• At community level, leagues and clubs making players
and coaches available to attend umpire training sessions
and being used as ambassadors in local media coverage
including newspapers, football records, radio and TV.
• A Poster for the campaign has been produced featuring:
Nick Riewoldt, Alastair Clarkson and Brett Rosebury
(AFL Field Umpire). These Posters have been distributed
to many outlets including Umpiring Groups, Football
Leagues/Associations as well as individual Clubs. These
Posters are designed to increase the awareness and
importance of the whole football family being involved in
assisting the match day environment for all participants.
• AFL Tasmania’s football RECORD also features an umpire
on this weekend’s cover alongside a player and coach
representative.
OUR GREAT GAME | Tasmanian All Australian Umpire of the Year
Tasmanian State League Umpire of the Year, Nick
Foot, has been named the AFL/Australian Sports
Commission (ASC) 2010 All Australian Umpire.
Foot, who umpired the TSL Senior Grand Final
and the interstate match between Tasmania and
Queensland at Southport, was selected for the
honour from a top field from around the country.
The AFL/ASC program sees one umpire chosen
from each State and Territory at the start of the year
as participants in the High Performance Umpiring
Academy that was coordinated by Brett Allen, former
AFL field umpire. Participants attended a number of
seminars and camps during the year and undertook
various personal professional development
initiatives. During the year Foot mentored a young
TSL field umpire and conducted coaching sessions
for TSL umpires and an umpiring course for High
School students.
As part of the award Foot has been travelling with
the Australian Under 18 team on a recent tour of the
United Kingdom, Italy and Turkey to play matches.
The umpiring highlight of the trip was officiating in an
Australia versus European International Team match
in London. The Australian U18 team also attended
the ANZAC day ceremony at Gallipoli.
AFL Tasmania State Umpiring Manager/Coach, Mike
Brown, says it was a fantastic effort by Foot.
The High Performance Umpiring Academy was made
up of eight umpires from all States and Territories all
of whom are considered as future AFL prospects. To
be named the All Australian Umpire is a tremendous
achievement. Nick has always displayed ability and
potential, but in the last two years he has markedly
improved his fitness and professionalism, which has
culminated in him winning this prestigious award.
Foot is also currently trialing for the AFL Panel. As
part of the trial he attended an AFL Umpires Camp
in late January and officiated in NAB Cup Pre-
Season matches. Nick’s overseas trip and AFL trial
emphasise the excellent opportunities and pathway
available for Tasmanian umpires to reach the top.
AFL Supplementary ‘Rookie’ Umpire List
Tasmanian Field Umpires, Nick Foot and Shaun
Gleeson, have been selected on the 2011 AFL
Supplementary ‘Rookie’ Umpires list.
AFL Tasmania State League General Manager,
Shaun Young, said the inclusion of the two
umpires on the AFL list was a vindication of the
Tasmanian State League (TSL) and the umpiring
standard. The selection of Nick and Shaun clearly
demonstrate that Tasmania’s best umpires now
have a direct pathway through to the AFL, the
same as the players. Prior to the introduction
of the TSL our best umpires were required to go
through the VFL system to be accepted onto the
AFL Umpiring Panel.
AFL Tasmania’s State Umpiring Manager/Coach.
Mike Brown, initiated an exhaustive process that
the umpires must follow to be chosen for the AFL
Umpiring list. The first criterion is to be appointed
and then perform at a high standard in the TSL
Grand Final. Following this a review and analysis
of the Grand Final is undertaken and nominations
are provided to AFL Field Umpires Coach, Rowan
Sawers. There is then a five month trial process
which includes passing endurance and fitness
benchmarks, attending an AFL Umpires Camp,
and officiating in the NAB Cup.
The AFL Supplementary listing requires umpires to
complete the same activities as all the other AFL
Umpires. This includes the training and coaching
sessions, weekly teleconferences and acting
regularly as an Emergency Umpire at AFL matches.
When not being involved with the AFL, the field
umpires officiate in their local leagues, which will
be of great benefit to the TSL umpiring group.
THE WEEK THAT WAS | Review of last weeks games
To butcher a well known literary phrase, rumours of the reigning champion’s demise were
greatly exaggerated.
Dual reigning premier Clarence showed there is plenty
of fight in the old Roo yet with its best performance and
win of the season with a 17-point victory over North
Hobart. Coming off recent poor form, everyone was
gunning for the Roos. Certainly their start did not allay
any fears as the Demons jumped out of the blocks,
leading by 27 points during the second term. But the
Roos led by their best player, Cameron Thurley, charged
back into the contest to be only a goal down at the long
break. Thurley was simply irresistible, booting five goals
as Clarence opened up a 20-point lead before having to
withstand a North Hobart rally. However, Thurley sealed
the victory with a classic left-foot snap to finish the
contest. Trent Standen also chimed in with four goals,
while Caden Wilson was close to being the matchwinner
for the Demons with six.
But all the clubs are chasing league-leaders
Launceston. The Blues hosted an improving Burnie in
round six, but sent the Dockers home with a 56-point
defeat. Brian Finch at full forward did most damage
with a bag of eight. Unusually playing forward instead
of his usual defensive post, Gary Shipton was best
afield across the half forward line and kicked four
goals – just another avenue to goal for the most
attacking team in the competition.
Lauderdale recorded a 73-point win over Devonport.
Key forward Jamie Di Ienno kept his purple-patch
going for the Bombers with four goals as the visitors
started with a seven goal to two first term and never
looked back, despite four goals from Magpie Phil
Crowden.
A change of coach at South Launceston did not bring
a change of fortune under the Aurora Stadium lights
with a 67-point loss to North Launceston. Injured
captain Mitch Hills has taken over the reins from
Dale Chugg after Chugg and the Bulldogs parted
company mid-week but the headaches remain
the same. The Bulldogs remain rooted to the foot
of the table and are yet to open their account in
2011. Medium-sized forward Darren Crawford was
unstoppable for North booting six goals.
Launceston is now two games clear on top thanks
to the big upset of the round with Hobart downing
Glenorchy by 27 points. The Magpies kicked an
amazing 2.10 in the first quarter, and with the door
ajar, the Tigers pounced with a seven goal to two
second term. The Tigers were able to withstand the
predictable Glenorchy comeback before marching
away for its best win of the season. For Hobart,
Bryden Goninon and Aaron Hall kicked four apiece
while big Todd Willing dominated the ruck.
BURNING QUESTIONs:
Having disposed of South Launceston again, can
North Launceston give its season some legitimacy by
defeating a top five team when it hosts North Hobart
next round?
After back to back losses, are previously high-flying
Glenorchy now in a deep trough?
Last week the Club came up against a very
strong Launceston outfit in both seniors and
colts. Although both teams came away without
the points there were a lot of positives that
were gained from the game. Our Colts were
very much undermanned with the side looking
more like our U17s team. Well done to all the
guys who stepped up and had their first taste of
Wrest Point State League.
Today at the point gate we have been running
a promotion with the first 50 Under 12 kids
that enter today’s game receiving a Dockers
football. Once again we would like to thank
the Fremantle Football Club for supplying the
footballs and their ongoing community support.
On Saturday 16th July the club will be holding
a reunion for the 1961 Cooee Senior and U/19
premiership teams. Anybody who was involved
during that time is welcome to attend.
Next Coterie Function is on July 30th. Former
Richmond champion and current CEO Brendon
Gale will be our guest speaker. This will book
out fast so don’t be disappointed book early
and enjoy the day.
Continuing the Run
A half time deficit couldn’t halt the Roos Twos
charge. With a 9-goal second half domination,
with great contributions from Brad Coad and
Gabby Chambers, our boys got a win by 14
points.
In what was a thriller our seniors overcame
a late charge by North Hobart to win the
game by 17 points. Once again efforts from
Cameron Thurley and Jackson O’Brien proved
to be the difference.
Special Mention Segment
This week’s special mention goes to John
Paine. John is a valued member of our team
at Clarence. He is one who is always willing to
volunteer to help out at functions and on game
Injuries have really started to hit hard in the
past few weeks at Devonport. The small
number of grand final players from 2010 have
been the hardest hit. Some of the injuries
include Brad Symmons, Sam Hess, Liam
Williams, Corey Plumbridge, Mark Wallace
and Glynn Llewellyn. The positives from these
injuries are the opportunities that are being
given to young players. It seems that every
week there are two new inclusions to the
senior side and last week’s inclusions of Toby
Enniss and Jack Stokes were impressive with
Jack being named in the best players.
This week the club has a major milestone
to celebrate with Rhys Colbeck playing in
his 150th senior game for the Devonport
Football Club. Since making his debut against
Smithton in 2001 at age 19 he has been a
great player for the club and deserves the life
membership he receives for this amount of
games. Rhys has kicked 191 goals for the
club, including 43 goals in both the 2003 and
2005 seasons. Rhys has played in various
positions throughout his time at Devonport
and has proved a valuable asset whether he is
back, forward or in the ruck. Congratulations
Last weekend’s results saw a mixed bag of
results. The positive thing in the Senior game was
the debut of Josh Grant and also the win by our
colts with Stuart Beswick having a day out kicking
11 goals. Today we welcome the Devonport to
KGV for the 1st time in the new state league.
Our boys will be keen to get back on the winners
results against Devonport last year.
HFC Men
A nice sunny day and a vocal crowd witnessed
first hand the potential of the Hobart side.
What a good win for the young side to knock
over Glenorchy. The coaching staff and
board have no doubt that when our boys are
switched on and focused that they can match
it with anyone in the competition. This was
evident on Sunday as the boys withstood a
couple of Glenorchy challenges to pull away in
the end to record a confidence boosting win.
Last night the boys travelled up and started
preparing themselves for today’s match
against Burnie, a win today will see us edging
closer to the top half of the ladder.
HFC Women
Please come along tomorrow to the TCA and
watch the Women in action as they take on
Sunday by supporting the girls and also our
future Tiger Cubs.
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Betasport Supporting The Umpires
BETASPORT, The TOTE’s sports betting business, is very pleased to be associated with the
Wrest Point State League, and more particularly the State League umpires.
BETASPORT is in the second year of a four-year
sponsorship with the league for the umpires to carry
The TOTE and BETASPORT logos on their uniforms.
Under the arrangement, BETASPORT is licensed
as the sole sports betting agency for the state
league and naming rights sponsor of its umpires.
The TOTE believes the partnership provides the
company with an excellent opportunity to not only
strengthen the brand but also to put money back
into Tasmanian football.
Round 7 of the Wrest Point State League will be
‘Thanks Ump Round’ in which the focus will be on
the importance of umpires to football.
TOTE Tasmania CEO Craig Coleman said
it was a good time to reflect on the
partnership.
“We are obviously very pleased to be
associated with Australian Rules football
in Tasmania,” he said.
“While it is true that we are an
international business with a growing
international focus, supporting Tasmania
and Tasmanian sport continues to be
very important to us.”
Under the sponsorship partnership
arrangement, The TOTE and BETASPORT
logos are featured at TSL grounds and
on umpire shirts and jackets and goal
umpire flags.
Mr Coleman said BETASPORT remained focused
on promoting itself in the broader community,
particularly the sporting community.
“AFL Tasmania and the TSL umpires provide
a good vehicle to promote our business in the
state,” he said.
“It’s a high-profile sport and was an obvious next
step for us in terms of sponsorship partners.
BETASPORT already has numerous successful
sponsorship arrangements in place with a variety
of Tasmanian sports.”
representation of the captains of government, business and sport. As well, we have recent Tasmanian
draftee, Josh Green, and our own resident expert – The Torch – giving us their insights to who will win week by
week in the 2011 Wrest Point State League.
The second quarter saw a continuation of dominant
play from Tasmania, with excellent backline play from
Jobi Harper, Henry Schade and Trad Duggan and
outstanding rebounding running from Dylan Riley.
Tasmania’s ferocious attack on the ball was a feature,
winning clearances and creating opportunities inside
50. Tall forwards Julian Dobosz and Larry Owen were
getting plenty of service and small forwards Martyn
Allison and Bradley Cox-Goodyer capitalised on ground
level crumbing chances also.
After recording a 100-plus point loss in game 1 last
year, the players were acutely aware o f the challenge
that lay before them. The team started very well, led
by midfielders John McKenzie and Daniel Fox, jumping
to a 32 point lead at quarter time, with the defence
intact and keeping Sandringham goalless.
The second half saw Sandringham not score its first
goal until well into the third quarter, with the game well
and truly over at that point in time. Tasmania was
impressive throughout, recording a 73 point victory.
