This is how a new shorter more regionally focused
finals series could work with a final 6:
Week 1 – 2 Semi Final Games based on where
Clubs finish, but with both the northern and
southern regions hosting 1 final. Ideally 3rd plays
6th and 4th plays 5th, but schedule as required
depending on which northern and southern teams
are playing, ie the highest ranked northern and
southern teams host the games in their region.
Week 2 – 2 Preliminary Final Games based
on previous weeks results. One final at Aurora
Stadium with the highest ranked northern team
and the other final at Bellerive Oval with the
highest ranked southern team. Their opponents
to be determined based on best outcome for
football and in particular spectator participation
in the TSL.
Week 3 – Grand Final at Bellerive Oval (even
years) or Aurora Stadium (odd years) with a
contingency to play the game at the alternate
venue if in any given year there are two teams
competing from the same region.
Given the competition will stay at 10 teams,
unless one team drops out, a final 6 is required
and the finals can be played over 3 weeks.
Why change to 3 weeks? It provides a point of
difference with regional and community football,
allows a shorter more focused build up to the
Grand Final and eradicates meaningless finals
games – all games in this finals series would
be cut throat season ending games. The top
2 teams in the roster are still rewarded with a
break in the first week of the final series (which is
equivalent of a ‘double chance’).
There is little doubt that playing a Wrest Point
State League preliminary final in each region
annually and a grand final in northern and
southern Tasmania on a rotational basis would
provide a magnificent boost in support for the
competition from all stakeholders.
