THIS WEEK’S COVER
The Magpies and Roos will battle
for Tasmanian Football’s Holy
Grail at Bellerive Oval today.
from the editor
Welcome to the Wrest Point State
League Grand Final Souvenir RECORD.
This is of course the final edition for
season 2010.
Well after a successful second season
the premiership race culminates with
the game we have all been waiting for
and what better game than a south
versus north-west stoush to decide
who will earn the title of Tasmania’s
premiership football team for 2010.
Will it be Clarence who continue on
their winning ways and take effectively
their 3rd consecutive State League
title after winning last year and also in
2000. Or will the north-west Magpies
cause arguably the biggest upset in the
history of state premiership football in
Tasmania.
In this edition we have produced a
special feature of all the players lining
up for the Magpies and the Roos in the
2010 decider. There are plenty of other
great articles to keep all football fans
reading when there is a moment’s break
on the field.
Best wishes to all teams who
are representing their Clubs and
communities and have a grand Grand
Final day at the footy.
VIEW FROM HERE | Magpies and Roos round out successful season
Well year two of the Wrest Point State League is
just about to come to a conclusion.
The victory by Devonport last Friday night, to gain
a place in the 2010 grand final, is due reward
for the two men that have led the Magpies over
the past two seasons; Coach Errol Bourn and
President, Steve Daley.
Valid questions were asked of Devonport when
they indicated they wanted to join Tasmania’s new
State League competition. Was the clubs balance
sheet sound enough and should AFL Tasmania
prioritise the inclusion of the highly successful
Ulverstone Football Club over Devonport?
In respect to the first question, our Board required
the Devonport Football Club to commit to working
with AFL Tasmania’s management team to
complete a five year club Business Plan before
their inclusion into the TSL was even considered.
New President, Steve Daley, had no hesitation in
committing to a business planning process before
joining the competition. In respect to the second
question, Steve Daley fought hard from day one
to convince our Directors to offer a TSL licence
agreement to the Devonport Magpies as a priority
ahead of Ulverstone.
Finally, Errol Bourn was a high quality player and a
profile personality at the Burnie Dockers, however,
was he the right choice to be the inaugural coach
of Devonport? In 2009 Errol gathered and
developed a group of young players from within
their district and they exceeded the expectations
of most people by finishing fourth in the first
year of the new TSL competition. This year the
Magpies lost their first three games, but Errol
Bourn remained calm and guided this relatively
young group into the 2010 grand final, which is a
significant coaching achievement.
Devonport’s opposition today, Clarence, have been
outstanding for a very long time. They are the
benchmark of Tasmanian football and have been
since their first TFL state wide league flag in 1993.
The football culture and facilities at the Clarence
Football Club are the envy of every other TSL club.
However, what most people involved in the TSL
don’t realise is that Clarence are also the leaders
of the pack in terms of the quality of their football
development program and their list management.
In spite of having another wonderful year, only
losing one game for the whole season, the culture
at the club will mean that the Roos will not take
anything for granted today. They will expect and
enjoy the contest; they know they have talent and
that they have done the work.
Clarence will expect to win, but can the Devonport
Magpies cause arguably the biggest upset ever in
a Tasmanian state premiership grand final. Time
will tell.
TASSIE MEDAL | Recognising Tasmania’s best and fairest player
What an exciting finish to our countdown to
establish the winner of the Wrest Point State
League Tassie Medalist for 2010. Will it be a
case of ‘Murphy’s Law’ or will we see a more
conventional outcome with a clear cut winner
being crowned?
The list of players still in the running has now
been cut from 20 to 10. The list of 10 players
was released by AFL Tasmania earlier this week
and represents the crème de la crème of the
state’s footballers.
Four southern players and six northern players,
including last year’s winner, Devonport’s Kurt
Heazlewood, are still a chance to win the award
or more precisely top the count. In all, six of
the league’s 10 clubs have representatives.
To add to the intrigue, North Launceston
midfielder, Zane Murphy, remains in contention
to top the award but is ineligible to win as he
was suspended during the season and thus
does not meet the requirements of the ‘Best
and Fairest’. If Murphy can top the count he
will join a small number of players who have
done so, including North Melbourne’s Corey
McKernan in 1996, Western Bulldogs’ Chris
Grant in 1997 for the Brownlow Medal and
Claremont’s Derek Kickett who topped the poll
for the WAFL’s Sandover Medal by 16 votes, but
could not win due to suspension in the 1980s.
The winner will be announced during today’s
Wrest Point State League Grand Final and best
wishes to all players on a top season.
2010 Tassie Medal - Top 10
• Burnie - Luke Shackleton.
• Clarence - Brett Geappen, Trent Standen,
Cameron Thurley.
• Devonport - Kurt Heazlewood.
• Lauderdale - Marcus Fitze.
• Launceston - Kurt McCabe, Sam
O’Keefe, Scott Stephens.
• North Launceston - Zane Murphy.
Launceston’s Brian Finch has won
the Hudson Medal, topping the goal kicking
across the home and away series with 81 goals.
Finch is the second Hudson medallist after
Clarence forward Brad Dutton won the award
in 2009 with 63 goals. The award is named
after Tasmanian and Hawthorn goalkicking
champion, Peter Hudson.
Devonport’s Ben Reynolds has won the Lefroy
Medal as the best player for Tasmania in the
interstate competition. Ben follows a long line
of Medallists as the award has been made for
more than 60 years. The award is named after
a Hobart based football Club which went into
recess during the second world war.
Gold Coast for 7 days and $2,500 cash.
WINNER | Scott Stephens
Launceston captain Scott Stephens has won
the prestigious RACT Insurance Player Of The
Year award, topping off a fine home and away
series for his Club and its supporters.
Stephens finished the season with 20 votes,
two clear of the runner-up, North Launceston’s
Zane Murphy, after the 18-round series and
adds his name to the honour board alongside
the inaugural RACT Player of the Year, Clarence’s
Jeromey Webberley. RACT Insurance CEO, Mr
Trent Sayers, announced the winner recently:
RACT Insurance became involved with the new AFL
Tasmania state league last year with the creation of
the Player of the Year award. As we see it, the statewide
league is not just another footy competition.
It’s a real community endeavour. As Tasmania’s
largest home-based insurance business, we saw
the importance of helping to nurture and support
a footy code that taps into almost every community
in the State. Towns and cities across Tasmania
supply players, administrators, umpires, coaches
and ground staff. That represents a community spirit
worth supporting.
The RACT Insurance Player of the Year was decided
from a weekly vote of Tasmanian print media
football correspondents. The winner receives a
seven days travel and accommodation package to
the Gold Coast, along with $2,500 cash.
Stephens started playing football for Launceston
in the under 12’s and has played 112 senior
games for Launceston. He was a member of the
2000 and 2001 Tassie Mariners and the 2001
National Championship winning side. He also
played with the Tassie Devils from 2002 – 2005
and 2007 and was also Co-Captain in 2007.
Stephens was the runner-up in the Darrell
Baldock medal in 2006, and the Examiner.
Advocate and Coast FM Player of the Year in
2006. He was a premiership player with the
Launceston Football Club in 2006, 2007 and
2008, and won the Best and Fairest in both
2006 and 2009.
His life is immersed in football. He has been
the Club Captain since 2008 and is currently
employed as the club’s General Manager. Scott
Stephens said:
It is a great thrill to win the 2010 media award
sponsored by RACT. They have put together a
fantastic package. I’m sure I will have a few
team-mates putting their hands out for a piece of
the cake though! I can also thank Budgie (Brett
Geappen). If he hadn’t of got injured I’m sure he
would have continued his early season form.
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Wrest Point State League Team of the Year
AFL Tasmania has unveiled the inaugural Wrest
Point State League Team of the Year.
This new innovation has seen the league’s
‘dream team’ chosen by a selection committee
comprising two AFL Tasmania representatives,
and two independent experts.
Selection of the leading players has been based
on performances over the 18 round home and
away season, a year that has seen the Wrest Point
Tasmanian State League reach new heights.
The Team of the Year is a new innovation for
Tasmanian football and parallels the national ‘All
Australian’ concept. Similar to the All Australian
recognition program the ‘Team of the Year’ also
selects the best player in each position on the
field, rather than the best 22 players in the
overall competition.
The coach and assistant coach of the year have
also been selected in what is set to become an
annual end of season highlight for the league.
ASSISTANT COACH Anthony Taylor (Launceston)
The selected team is not without controversy as 3
clubs, Hobart, Lauderdale and South Launceston,
are not represented. Hobart key forward Michael
Cassidy, Lauderdale midfielder Marcus Fitze and
South’s State ruckman Mitchell Hills have all been
overlooked.
Another controversial selection is the placement
of Brett Geappen at full forward ahead of Hudson
Medalist Brian Finch, who is in the pocket. Given
‘Budgie’ missed half the season following his
retirement due to injury it seems he has been
selected as the ultimate decoy full forward.
Clarence has 7 representatives in the team and at
least one player on every line except the midfield
where their prolific and talented teenage star Josh
Green could only have missed selection due to
State underage duties.
Congratulations to all those players and coaches
who have been recognized with selection in the
first Wrest Point State League ‘Team of the Year’.
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Matthew Richardson Medal Winner
Clarence half-forward, Trent Standen, has won
the inaugural Matthew Richardson Medal after a
stellar season in the Wrest Point State League.
Awarded to the Rookie of the Year, players eligible
for the Matthew Richardson Medal must be under
23 years of age, have played less that 20 games
at the start of the season, and in no more than two
years of senior football.
Known as “Speedy” to his team-mates, Standen
began his career with the now defunct Rokeby
Junior Football Club, before being transferred
to Clarence. He played under-17, under-19,
Reserves and 10 senior games for Clarence, before
transferring to Sorell Football Club in the Southern
Football League.
His natural ability continued to shine through, with
two Best and Fairest awards at Sorell, and selection
in several SFL representative squads, although
circumstances deemed that he never actually
played for the representative team.
After four brilliant years for Sorell, Standen returned
to Clarence for the 2010 season, playing every
game this year. His season will culminate this
weekend when Clarence take on Devonport in the
Wrest Point State League Grand Final.
The Matthew Richardson Medal is named after one
of Tasmania’s and Richmond’s modern day greats.
The rise of Richardson
Matthew Richardson was born and started his
football career in Devonport. His father, Allan,
was a premiership player for Richmond in 1967.
Throughout childhood and his adult life football has
been front and centre. An acknowledged ‘footyhead’
he is now also a respected commentator on
the game.
Richardson played 16 games and kicked 23 goals
with Devonport in 1992 and was drafted later that
year under the ‘Father / Son’ rule. He debuted for
Richmond in 1993 and in his first season he was an
AFL Rising Star nominee.
For much of his career Matthew Richardson has
made a name for himself as an enigmatic player
in Richmond’s forward line, predominately at
full forward. He has shown himself capable of
producing great feats of high marking, running
and goal kicking, but has had many seasons
interrupted by injury during his career. He has lost
the equivalent of 3 full seasons to injury.
In 2008 a move to the wing early in the year proved
a masterstroke. At 34 year of age the star veteran
was given a free-wheeling role and he averaged
18 touches, finished equal third in the Brownlow
Medal, took the most home and away marks in the
AFL (222) and still topped Richmond’s goalkicking
with 48.
Matthew Richardson has multiple individual player
honours and has been recognized by Richmond
FC and Tasmania with selection in their respective
‘Teams of the Century’ and by his home state with
early inclusion and then ‘Legend’ status in the
‘Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame’.
Richmond player honours:
• Brownlow Medal: 3rd (equal) in 2008.
• Best and fairest - 2007; 2nd best and fairest 1996, 1999,
2002, 2005; 3rd best and fairest 2008.
• All-Australian 1996, 1999, 2008.
• International Rules Series 1999.
• Leading goalkicker 1994, 1996 to 1999, 2001 to 2008.
• Alex Jesaulenko Medal 1996.
All at the Club are extremely proud of our Under
head into the finals today against Clarence.
The last time these two teams played saw the
will be a very hard fought contest and we are
sure it will be a great, competitive game. Good
THE WHISTLE BLOWER | Grand Finals umpire appointments
This year a TSL Umpiring Squad was formed for
the first time and was made up of 74 members
(30 Field, 22 Boundary and 22 Goal).
The Squad was chosen from the 3 major umpire
associations in Tasmania and comprised 38
umpires from Hobart, 22 from Launceston and
14 from the North West Coast.
The main area of concern within umpiring in
Tasmania continues to be the shortage / retention
throughout the State. These issues are regularly
being considered at state and national level.
One largely untapped area of recruiting is former
players. For most ex-players the biggest step is
to just try it. Ex-players assist fill the large void in
most umpiring groups which is the ages between
25 and 40.
There are now many opportunities for umpires to
further their career. Today, eight umpires (3 Field,
3 Boundary and 2 Goal) have been appointed to
the TSL Grand Final which is the ultimate goal for
any Tasmanian based umpire.
With the reintroduction of the State League
competition, we now have a direct pathway
through to the AFL. The match will be observed
by AFL Umpiring Assessors and umpires
participating may be invited to trial for the 2011
AFL Squad.
POINT OF VIEW | Where have all the crowds gone?
The Tasmanian State and Regional football Grand
Finals have historically attracted some of the
greatest congregations in Tasmanian sporting
history. In 1979 the regional grand finals of the
TFL, NTFA and NWFU attracted 42,000 people to
the football on that one day in September.
Similarly, the Tasmanian Statewide League grand
finals of the late 1980s and early 1990s attracted
an average of 16,000 fans. However, in the
last 3 years of the old State league the average
Grand Final crowd dropped to 9,000. The last
decade has been dominated by large crowds at
AFL games at Aurora Stadium and a memorable
11,000 crowd at a Tasmanian Devils final at
Bellerive Oval in 2004.
The inaugural Wrest Point State League Grand
Final between traditional rivals Glenorchy and
Clarence attracted 7,500 to Bellerive Oval in
2009. This year with so many factors weighing
against crowd attendance it is likely that the
Grand Final will be the lowest ever for this level
of competition.
So where have all the people gone and how do we
get them back to the footy, particularly the Grand
Final, which must be built into the showpiece of
the Wrest Point State League and Tasmanian
football itself?
The SANFL and WAFL have built up their Grand
Finals to become a special event for their
communities and they have had great success in
drawing thousands back to the local footy. Maybe
there are some lessons to be learnt from these,
like Tasmania, traditional football states.
As well, it may be that we need to look for a
uniquely Tasmanian solution to the challenge
of attracting more people back to the football.
Although the Wrest Point State League is now
only two years old and we have two different
finals series maybe it is time to have another
look at the Finals Series format and ask does it
provide the best outcome for Tasmanian football
as a spectacle?
The Wrest Point State League roster has been
one of innovation to achieve the best crowds
and minimize travel for the 10 Clubs and most
importantly the supporters and football fans
generally. This ‘conference’ style approach has
seen Clubs play each other in their region up to 3
times and play some out of region Clubs only once.
Subsequently, the Wrest Point State League
should ‘engineer’ a more regionally focused
finals series. A Final 6 which has a northern
and southern preliminary final would achieve
a more definitive scheduling arrangement
and with greater certainty the games could be
promoted for longer. This approach could also
give administrators the opportunity to schedule
the Grand Final between Aurora Stadium and
Bellerive Oval on a rotational basis.
This year’s 5 week finals series has been long
winded, had a number of repeat games and
has struggled to capture the imagination of
the football public, the media or the players /
coaches. As well, this year the 2 grand finalists
have both had the opportunity to host 2 finals
games at their home venues. This was a
significant home ground advantage. Similarly,
Clarence have only played out of Hobart 2 times
for the whole year yet Launceston travelled to
Hobart for 3 of their last 5 games of the year and
would have had to travel their again this week
except they ran out of legs in the Preliminary
Final, which was their 4th consecutive finals
game. Devonport will play their 5th consecutive
finals game today and that has only happened
once in the history of senior football in Australia.
North Melbourne won the 1977 VFL Grand Final
Replay in their 5th game, but that required a
Grand Final draw for that to occur.
On this basis there is a need for a new shorter
finals series that still gives each region an
opportunity to showcase TSL finals series football.
As well, it is incumbent on the AFL Tasmania and
the TSL Clubs to establish by whatever means a
grand final date that does not clash with regional
and community grand finals.
14

This is how a new shorter more regionally focused
finals series could work with a final 6:
Week 1 – 2 Semi Final Games based on where
Clubs finish, but with both the northern and
southern regions hosting 1 final. Ideally 3rd plays
6th and 4th plays 5th, but schedule as required
depending on which northern and southern teams
are playing, ie the highest ranked northern and
southern teams host the games in their region.
Week 2 – 2 Preliminary Final Games based
on previous weeks results. One final at Aurora
Stadium with the highest ranked northern team
and the other final at Bellerive Oval with the
highest ranked southern team. Their opponents
to be determined based on best outcome for
football and in particular spectator participation
in the TSL.
Week 3 – Grand Final at Bellerive Oval (even
years) or Aurora Stadium (odd years) with a
contingency to play the game at the alternate
venue if in any given year there are two teams
competing from the same region.
Given the competition will stay at 10 teams,
unless one team drops out, a final 6 is required
and the finals can be played over 3 weeks.
Why change to 3 weeks? It provides a point of
difference with regional and community football,
allows a shorter more focused build up to the
Grand Final and eradicates meaningless finals
games – all games in this finals series would
be cut throat season ending games. The top
2 teams in the roster are still rewarded with a
break in the first week of the final series (which is
equivalent of a ‘double chance’).
There is little doubt that playing a Wrest Point
State League preliminary final in each region
annually and a grand final in northern and
southern Tasmania on a rotational basis would
provide a magnificent boost in support for the
competition from all stakeholders.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE | Devonport Magpies
As 2010 draws to a close I take this opportunity
to reflect on what has been an extremely
successful year for the Devonport Football Club.
Despite losing the first three games our boys,
under the leadership of Coach Errol Bourn, have
moulded into a talented and cohesive team with
the single focus of giving their best for the Club
and the wider football community. This dedication
and commitment and a tremendous self and
team belief have resulted in the Devonport playing
off in the Grand final today.
The “boys” have the opportunity today to emulate
the feat of Roland Crosby and his team who won
the old TFL State-wide League Grand Final in
1988, when they soundly defeated Glenorchy.
Errol Bourn and his team have overcome
many hurdles on their way to today’s big
game, defeating Glenorchy, North Hobart and
Launceston and now it is Clarence in the Grand
Final. I take this opportunity to congratulate
Clarence on making it through to their second
Grand Final in a row in the State League and I am
sure football followers will witness an outstanding
game of football, as the two top teams in this
state chase the “Holy Grail”.
On behalf of all members and supporters of
the Devonport Football club I wish Errol Bourn,
his Assistant Coaches Ricky Clarke and Kurt
Heazlewood and our extremely talented 22 players
running on to the ground today every success and
good luck – you have done us all proud!
I also take this opportunity to thank the Coaches
of our other teams for their magnificent efforts
during the past year: Reserves - Dean Cullen; U18
- Gerard Ennis and Dean O’Neill; U17 - Darren
Brooks; U15 - Jamie Smith; and our trainers
Wayne Bolton, Steve O’Neill, Leon Charlesworth,
Teegan Barnett and Peter Sherriff, Property
Manager Ted Smith and game day officials Steve
Predojevic and Tony Bell.
Every week two young teenagers have given up
their Saturdays to be “water boys” for our club
and I refer particularly to Jack White and Jacob
Marshall who epitomize the young people who
are the future of this great club. I also thank our
hard-core group of volunteers who have worked
tirelessly throughout the year undertaking many
roles around the club.
We thank our sponsors for their support and
we look forward with great enthusiasm to their
continued involvement in 2011. We acknowledge
the support of: Adam Brooks’ Total Performance
Sports, Cambridge Painting Services, Terry and
Joan Matthews, The Eli, Passport Surf, 7AD,
Petuna Seafoods, Carpet One, Lance and Jan Cox,
Neil Wilkinson Pty Ltd and Sea FM.
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE | Clarence Roos
Fellow board members, members and
supporters please join me and show our sincere
thanks to the coaches, players, support staff,
committee members, volunteers and our
fantastic sponsors for their outstanding support
which is reflected today by our U18’s, Reserves
and Seniors who have all made it through to the
2010 Grand Final.
A football club is never easy to run, but when you
have a dedicated band of volunteers who work
side by side, as close as a family, then it will work.
Thank you to Richard and Robin for being there
making this family really bond.
To Brett Geappen the Senior Coach, your
professionalism, dedication and the way you have
built such a culture within our club from the U16’s
through to the Seniors is a real credit to you and
your assistant coaches who have the same beliefs
and dedication, well done. When you were forced
to retire this year we all knew you still had that
burning passion to put that behind you and still
develop what you had started.
To every player in our senior squad, yes it is heart
breaking to know that some one will miss out on
playing for that dream, but dreams are for ever
and you will get that one day. Devonport has done
extremely well on reaching this spot and let me
congratulate them on playing in the TSL Grand
Final, but I will be still pushing for a ROOS victory.
To Rodney Callinan coach of the Reserves,
and your support staff and players, let me
congratulate every one of you on making it
through to this fantastic day, which will go down
in history as the “LAST RESERVES GAME”. There
would be no better way to finish than by holding
that Premiership Cup aloft.
To Glenn Gleeson coach of the U18’s and Skipper
Cooke and your fantastic support staff. Well you
all had your backs against the wall which started
with a road trip to Launceston. Clarence Football
Club is proud of what you have done so far and
now it is up to you to determine your fate.
Not forgetting our fantatsic ladies who make the
meals, our ever hard working bar staff who love
the football but put their volunteer work first for
the club and our gate attendants thank you.
I again acknowledge and thank our sponsors,
PLAYER MATCH UPS
IF THESE MAGPIES AND ROOS HAVE COME TO PLAY THEN THE WREST POINT
STATE LEAGUE GRAND FINAL OF 2010 WILL BE A GAME FOR THE AGES!
CLARENCE - 6 PLAYERS TO WATCH
15. Josh GREEN. Tassie Mariners captain and
likely 2010 AFL draftee. Josh is an exceptional ball
handler and is able to win the football both inside
and outside of a contest. He also has the ability to
kick a freakish and timely goal as shown late in the
preliminary final of 2009 against Burnie. This may
well be Josh’s last game with Clarence FC before
venturing into the AFL so look for him to have a
massive influence on the contest.
12. Cameron THURLEY. If “Thurls” plays well,
winning possessions at will and pushing forward
to kick goals Devonport will find it very, very hard
to win the game. His ability to influence games
throughout the year with his ball winning and skill
execution has enabled other Clarence players to
feed off his dominance and confidence. Look for
Cameron to put himself on the ground where a
spark or steadying influence is required.
20. Gregg SHARMAN. The key position backman has
had a good finals series to date, keeping Brian Finch
under control in two games against Launceston. In the
Grand Final he will get the match up on Devonport’s
main avenue to goal, Ben Reynolds. If Sharman
can match Reynolds in aerial contests and keep his
scoring output to a minimum, Clarence will be a long
way along to securing back to back TSL premierships.
5. Brennan SAVAGE. Having played in two NTFL
premierships with Launceston FC as a full back,
“Sav” now gets the chance to show his wares in a
grand final as a key position forward and back up
ruckman. Although not a big goal kicker Brennan’s
ability to provide a constant and strong forward target
and then feed the ball to his runners through CHF
has enabled Clarence to play their chip and charge,
fast paced game style.
16. Matthew DRURY. “Spud” is one of the hardest
match ups for opposition coaches in the competition.
He stands over 190cm and plays as a hit up, leading
forward but has the speed, endurance and agility of a
rover. As Clarence direct the ball through him on a high
percentage of forward thrusts, “Spud’s” opponent will
need to be fit and fresh to match his workrate.
22. Jaymes BAKER. When opposition coaches do
their match ups against Clarence this player can tend
to get under the guard with dire consequences. One of
the better and longer kicks in the competition, Baker
always contributes and has the ability to bob up and
kick important long range goals. Clarence use him as
a designated kicker whenever they can as his disposal
by foot can cut the opposition to shreds.
Devonport – 6 players to watch
2. Rhys MOTT. “Motty” has had a huge workload
in 2010 combining a prominent role in the team
at Devonport FC and being vice captain and an
important ball winner with the Tassie Mariners. Rhys
has the ability to win the footy in contested situations
through his exceptional ball handling and as evident in
the preliminary final against Launceston is also adding
to his game the ability to kick important goals.
8. Ben REYNOLDS. If Devonport has designs on
being the 2010 premier “Big Ben” will need to have
a big day. Reynolds has had a terrific year combining
his marking strength with an excellent work rate. He
plays CHF quite traditionally and Devonport focus
most of their forward forays thru him. Ben hasn’t
kicked a lot of goals in this year’s finals series and he
will probably need to do so for the magpies to have a
chance of winning.
26. Trent MCCROSSEN. McCrossen has had a
consistent year playing through the midfield and has
the ability to cut opposition up with his penetrating
and accurate kicking. When “froggy” is on song
and his work rate matches his ability he is a very
damaging player. With Clarence’s multitude of
midfield rotations Devonport will need McCrossen to
stand tall for their team.
15. Chris MCDONALD. The older of the McDonald
siblings slips under the guard of the opposition at
times due to having a lower profile. Chris has had a
very consistent year playing as a HF/midfielder and
has a clever knack of making something happen
when he gets the ball. After a couple of injury
ravaged years McDonald is starting to show how
much ability he really has.
35. Sam HESS. Once a ruckman now a CHB. Sam
has had a consistent year in a key defensive post and
Devonport will need him to stand tall in the grand
final. A likely opponent for Brennan Savage, Hess
will need to compete hard in aerial duels and give
some offensive drive for his team. If he can control
Clarence’s attacking corridor and output from their
key forwards he will be helping greatly Devonport’s
attempt to win the game.
5. Kurt HEAZLEWOOD. Devonport’s captain will
need to leave from the front if they are to claim the
premiership. “Snapper’s” strength lays in getting
to the fall of the ball first and linking up through
the midfield. He will need to use the ball well going
forward to give his forwards the best opportunity to
beat their opponents’ one on one. With quite a few
young players in their side Heazlewood’s experience
will be an important settling influence.
No.33
RHYS COLBECK
One the best kicks at goals
in the side. For a big bloke
he is quick over 30 yards
and takes a good mark on
the lead.
No.35
SAM HESS
The young tall ruckman
has really slotted in well
this year playing down
back as a defender.
No.40
PHILLIP CROWDEN
Mr. Versatile. Has played
all over the ground this
year. A previous century
goal kicker with the club.
No.54
BRETT MCCALL
One of the more senior
players in the side who
always puts his body on
the line for the team.
YOUNG GUNS | U18 Grand Final preview
North Launceston v Clarence
Season 2010 has seen a high standard of
football played throughout the Under 18
competition with a fast and skilful game style
impressing crowds around the state.
In the Grand Final today, North Launceston will
start narrow favourites against Clarence after
finishing minor premiers, although only by a
mere 8% after both teams finished the season
with 48 points.
In head to head encounters the tally is 1-1,
with Clarence winning the only home and away
encounter by 3 points at home and North
Launceston recently winning earlier in this final
series, significantly, by 32 points at Bellerive Oval.
Clarence will be slightly disadvantaged at the
selection table as it has all three teams in the
Grand Final. However, the game is expected to be
a cliff-hanger.
There are many potential senior players of the
future to watch on both teams. The key players
listed could determine the outcome if playing at
their best.
Best wishes to all players from both North
Launceston and Clarence today.
Nick Probert
Talent Manager.
Foreign Legion or Development Zones at work?
The North Launceston Football Club did not field
an U19 team in the 2009 Wrest Point State
League so has done a significant job in appointing
a coach and support team that has been able to
identify, recruit and mould together a team that is
today challenging for the premiership.
The origins of the North Launceston team are
many and varied with numerous players coming
from outside their development zone, including
their coach Zane Littlejohn from Latrobe.
The contrast with the Clarence team is also
interesting as most of their team originated from
their own junior club, but significantly 10 players
on their list first played with the Sorell Junior
Football Club which is deep in the heart of the
Lauderdale zone.
It will be fascinating to see how many of the young
players in each team are able to progress on and
play senior TSL football or even higher with their
Clubs over the coming years and we wish them well.
But the challenge for all TSL Clubs remains to not
only develop the young talented players in their
zone, but also genuinely support the development
of Clubs in their zone who are proving such fertile
ground for the introduction of young talented
players to the game.
North Launceston
Stephen Hill #77
The leading goalkicker in the Under 18
competition for 2010 and plays a similar game
to senior goalsneaks Brett Geappen and Trent
Standen from Clarence. Stephen is tough to
match up as he is a good mark for his size and is
excellent at ground level also.
Zac Burt #73
A 16 year old who has had an excellent season,
playing predominantly as a forward but has
the flexibility to be moved around the ground if
the need arises. A very strong mark and good
competitor.
Cody Thorp #52
A tall, developing ruck/forward, at 196cm look
for Cody to be a strong influence at stoppages
and marking contests around the ground. Good
on the lead, Cody is capable of kicking goals as a
forward also.
Mitch Van Den Berg #68
A versatile medium tall player that has had an
outstanding season generally around half forward
and through the midfield. Calm with the ball in his
hands look for Mitch to be involved with many of
the Bomber’s scoring thrusts.
Clarence
Matthew Ling #72
A speedy wingman, Mathew loves to run and carry
the ball and can often find himself in space on the
wings of Bellerive Oval as the ball comes out of
the Clarence backline.
Jack Gleeson #52
Wearing a helmet after several head clashes,
Jack is a small inside midfielder who is good
at stoppages and through the middle of the
ground. Jack will also sneak forward and kick
crumbing goals.
Declan Crawford #58
A key defender, Declan has had a very consistent
season and is the general of the Clarence backline.
He possesses good speed and strength and can
kick the ball a long way – look to him to take the
Northern Bombers most dangerous tall forward.
Lewis Taylor #59
A tall ruckman, Lewis has had an outstanding
season and can contribute around the ground and
is expected to have a strong influence on the game.
GRASS ROOTS | Regional Wrap up 2010
There are still 4 more regional and community
football grand finals to be contested this
weekend. Hopefully, in the near future we will
see Tasmanian football grand finals played
in a hierarchy so that all footy fans can enjoy
community, regional and state finals on
consecutive weekends.
Northern Tasmanian Football League - Arch rivals
Latrobe and Ulverstone go head to head. During
the roster Ulverstone had the edge over Latrobe,
but the Demons should come into the final full of
confidence after a close win in the second semi
final. This should be a close one and will go down
to the wire.
Southern Football League - New Norfolk are the
hot tip having had a rest last week while Dodges
Ferry had to earn their place in a very physical
game against Huonville. The result could very
well come down to which key forward gives their
team the best outcome. If Michael Thompson
(New Norfolk) and Simon Lampkin (Dodges Ferry)
can exert their influence then this may settle the
title in what should be an enthralling contest.
Darwin - First time coach and ex-Tassie Devil,
Tim MacMichael, leads the Somerset boys in
the grand final against Natone. Natone will be
favourites after having a week off, but the good
form of the Somerset boys right through the final
series will be a concern.
Old Scholars - St Virgils won a very hard fought
preliminary final against University for their crack
at Hutchins. Despite a clean sweep in their games
this season, Hutchins will not have it all their way
as St Virgils have some very experienced finals
campaigners with the likes of Leigh Post, Jason
Britten and ex Carlton draftee Adrian Burdon.
OUR RECORD | The making of a reading legend in 2010
At the start of the 2010 Wrest Point State
League season we set ourselves a goal for the
RECORD to consistently provide the highest
quality, timely and cost effective production
and which will be the most admired sporting
periodical produced in Tasmania.
We are happy for our customers and supporters
to be the judge of that, but suffice to say it has
been a significant endeavour to provide 23
editions of the RECORD to the standard that we
have been able to achieve in the last 6 months of
the season.
The team that has produced the RECORD
includes:
• Smedley Sports Management – management of
all aspects by Daniel Smedley, including editorial
and written and photo contributions.
• Flying Colours - our team for design and print,
specifically Roxanne Hayes, Mathew Lowe and
Craig Pearce. (pictured)
• Contributors – in particular Scott Wade, Trent
Bartlett, Michael Brown, Nick Probert, Adam
Sanders, and Andrea Goodwin from AFL Tasmania.
Of course the TSL Clubs have also made weekly
contributions to lists and notes.
Collectively we have undertaken a 9 month
journey involving countless meetings, emails
and other consultation. We have had a massive
print run of more than 90,000 ‘shells’ for the 18
roster series RECORDS. Finally, the final series
has entailed a further weekly production run of on
average 1500 copies in full colour to ensure that
the RECORDs are genuine collector’s items for
footy buffs.
Grand Final Montage Clarence / Devonport Design: Bryan Coglan (Flying Colours)
In selecting the photo or creating a montage that
will be used each week we have aimed to feature
an image that conveys a message or reinforces
the best attributes of Tasmanian state level
football. The best media photos are those that
can tell a story in one image. We believe that this
has been achieved many times throughout 2010.
Also, with the proliferation of digital photography
we always welcome contributions from Club
supporters in our search for the next cover
picture. In this regard we wish to make special
mention of the efforts of Launceston Football
Club’s volunteer, Steve Youd. Without Steve’s
support we would not have been able to achieve
the consistently high quality.
Finally, the RECORD has also determined to seek
the advice of a panel of experts in respect of the
‘Best Cover’ for 2010. The decision was difficult
and came down to 5 standouts, including the 2
montages for Week 1 and the Grand Final, 2 great
action shots in Rounds 16 and 17 and the winner
being the Round 12 shot of a perfectly framed
Mathew Armstrong addressing the ultimately
victorious Tasmanian U18 team at Aurora
Stadium. The performance at this coach’s huddle
shows intent and passion etched on each face as
befits every game of football at state level.
OUR GREAT GAME | Tassie Jack wins the Coleman
Richmond star Jack Riewoldt has joined
Tasmanian football Icon, Peter Hudson, and
Tasmanian team of the century member,
Michael Roach, as a winner of the AFL’s
Coleman Medal.
The Coleman Medal is awarded yearly to the
Australian Football League player who kicks the
most goals in regular-season matches in that year.
It is named for John Coleman, the former Essendon
full forward whose spectacular career (of 537 goals
in only 98 games) was cut short by injury.
Instituted in 1981, retrospective awards were dated
back to 1955, the year after John Coleman retired
from playing. The AFL has awarded retrospective
Leading Goalkicker Medals to players who lead the
goal kicking before 1955, including John Coleman in
1949, 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1953.
Riewoldt has enjoyed a stellar season at full
forward for the improving Tigers and has become
the new pin up boy at Punt Road following the
retirement of that other great Tasmanian Tiger,
Matthew Richardson.
Preceding him at Punt Road, Michael Roach
reached his greatest heights during Richmond’s
last premiership year in 1980 when he kicked a
century of goals. He repeated his Coleman Medal
win in 1981.
Hawthorn great Peter Hudson was Tasmania’s first
Coleman Medalist and he took the award on no
less than 4 occasions. This was achieved over the
course of a decade interrupted by serious injury
and which only serves to underline Huddo’s ability
as the ‘Goalkicking Genius’.
There are a further two AFL greats who have won
the Coleman Medal and had a connection with
Tasmanian football.
The Collingwood superstar of the late 1960s and
early 1970s, Peter McKenna, won the Coleman
Medal in 1972 (130 goals) and 1973 (84
goals). In 1976 after concluding his career with
Collingwood, wherein he played 180 games and
kicked over 800 goals, McKenna spent a season
with Devonport in the North West Football Union.
As well in 2008, Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin, led the
AFL goal kicking with 102. Of course Franklin
achieved some of his feats while playing for the
‘Tassie Hawks’ at Aurora Stadium.
Jack Riewoldt
Clarence . Tassie Mariners . Richmond, Full
Forward, 2006 - 2010
Jack Riewoldt was selected by Richmond at 13th
pick in the 2006 AFL Draft and was highly rated
by the Tigers as a key forward prospect.
After debuting in 2007 the 21 year old
Tasmanian, who is 195cm tall, continued his
development as a key forward through the 2008
and 2009 seasons. In 2009 Jack was the leading
Tiger player in general marks (equal first) and
contested marks, and placed eighth in the Club
best and fairest. It was becoming apparent that
Riewoldt’s confidence, exceptional leap and
a good set of hands were the ingredients for
improved performance at the highest level.
Riewoldt’s confidence continued to grow in 2010
and he kicked a career best 10 goals in Round
12, 13 June 2010 against the West Coast Eagles.
The haul included 5 first-quarter goals, with 4 of
them in just 10 minutes, making it one of the best
Richmond returns in a single quarter. He became
the first player to kick 10 goals since 2007
(and the first Richmond player since Matthew
Richardson in 2004). Riewoldt joins only 3 other
current AFL players to have recorded a double
figure goal tally in a game. In Round 21 2010,
Jack won the Ian Stewart medal against St.Kilda
for his amazing performance, kicking 7 goals.
To cap a magnificent breakout season, Riewoldt
won the 2010 Coleman medal for the AFL leading
goalkicker. Four days after winning the Coleman
Medal, Riewoldt secured the Jack Dyer Medal as
Richmond’s best and fairest with 210 votes ahead
of captain Chris Newman and Brett Deledio.
Jack Riewoldt has now played 68 games for the
Tigers and kicked 135 goals.
Michael Roach
Longford . Richmond, Full Forward, 1977-89
• 200 games, 607 goals, Richmond, 1977-89
• Won Richmond’s goalkicking 7 times, including a
new club record of 112 in 1980.
• Won the VFL goalkicking in 1980 and 1981.
• Richmond Premiership, 1980.
• Represented Tasmania in 1980 and 1988.
• Named in the 1979 All-Australian team.
• Played 46 senior games with Longford.
• Represented NTFA and Tasmania in 1976.
Universally known as “Disco”. Recruited to
Richmond at a young age and played as a
wingman initially, but under the great Royce
Hart’s tutelage became one of the Tigers’ best
ever full-forwards. Was a tremendous high mark
with sure hands and a great kick. His 1981 ‘Mark
of the Year’ being a towering highlight.
Peter Hudson
• William Leitch Medal (TFL Best & Fairest) – 1978
& 1979.
• Represented Victoria (6) and Tasmania (19) on
numerous occasions.
• Twice All Australian – 1966 (New Norfolk) and
1969 (Hawthorn).
• ‘Legend’ of Australian Football. ‘Icon’ of
Tasmanian Football.
• Named at full forward in Hawthorn, Glenorchy,
New Norfolk and Tasmanian Teams of Century.
Statistically the greatest full-forward in the history
of Australian football. No player averaged more
goals in the VFL . AFL than Hudson. Kicked 100+
goals in 11 seasons in Tasmania and Victoria.
His goalkicking feats were curtailed by injury in
1972, 73, 74 when he was only able to play 4
games. With Bob Pratt has the record for number
of goals kicked (150) in the VFL . AFL. Retains
the record for most goals kicked in a season in
Tasmania with 191 in 1978. An official ‘Legend’
of Australian football whose exploits have never
been seen before in Australian football and are
unlikely to be seen again.
OUR GREAT GAME | Tasmanians making a Grand contribution to AFL
TASMANIAN PREMIERSHIP PLAYERS – 1897 to 2009
Tasmania’s contribution to the history of Grand
Finals in the VFL and AFL football is pronounced.
In the period from 1955 to 1985 Tasmanians
made up the biggest contingent of interstate
players in the then Victorian Football League.
The influence of these players peaked in 1973
when the state had 20% (4 players) of the winning
Richmond premiership team. A further 3 players
played for the runners - up Carlton on the same
day. The Tasmanians who ran onto the MCG on
the last day in September that year were: Royce
Hart, Ian Stewart, Paul Sproule, Noel Carter
(Richmond) and Peter Jones, Brent Crosswell and
Craig Davis (Carlton).
The numbers of Tasmanians in the post war years
in the VFL, and indeed the number of Victorians
who played and coached in Tasmania, was so
pronounced that it could be argued that both
states football competitions were symbiotic.
Tasmania supplied its best young prospects to
the VFL and Victoria provided a constant flow of
experienced senior footballers to captain / coach
local Tasmanian Clubs.
The number of players who were born in Tasmania
or began their career in Tasmania and then went
on to play in a VFL / AFL Premiership is 46.
A further 40 premiership players have made a
contribution to Tasmanian football, including
Australian Football Hall of Fame inductees Albert
Collier and Stuart Spencer.
OUR GREAT GAME | Tasmania’s State Premiership Coaches
Bourn or for the double Geappen. One of these
coaches will join elite company on Grand Final
day when they coach their team to the Wrest
Point State League premiership. Who will they
join and what does it mean? The list of great
coaches is long and brings back memories of
great football battles past.
Some of the names that stand out amongst 73
premiership coaches include:
• 24 Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame members
(marked *).
• Many champion VFL . AFL players who captain
– coached in Tasmania, epitomised by Jack
Beveridge the Collingwood star of the 1927 to
1930 era; Carlton colossus Fred Davies who
led Longford to their only triumph and more
recently the arrival of Sydney Swans team
mates, Mark Browning, Steve Wright and David
Rhys – Jones in the 1990s.
• Great coaches who helped their Tasmanian
clubs achieve their most memorable moments,
including Bob Wilson at Scottsdale, Rod Olsson
at sandy Bay and Ricky Graham at Ulverstone.
Leading Coaches
The leading Tasmanian state premiership
coaches almost exclusively achieved their records
in the period 1909 to 1951. The only exception
being the much maligned Clarence coach of
the 1990s, Grant Fagan. It is arguable that the
two regional format of the early years allowed
coaches to more readily achieve their results in
a short time frame. In the first Tasmanian State
League the gruelling nature of the competition
made long-term multiple premiership coaching
much more difficult. This makes Grant Fagan’s
and the other multiple premiership coaches of
that era achievement arguably more meritorious.
Similarly, when the State Premiership format
moved to 3 regions from 1954 to 1978 it also
became more difficult to achieve multiple
premierships. In this regard the achievement of
City . City-South coaching maestro, Bob Miller,
is significant. He first coached City to a state
premiership in 1954. Then 18 years later, in a
second coaching stint, he took the Redlegs to the
1972 pennant over Darrel Baldock’s Latrobe.
The Final Word
Tasmania’s Head Coach, Mathew Armstrong,
achieved the honour of coaching North Launceston
to their 1998 State Premiership without being
defeated. This was Armstrong’s first coaching
assignment and launched his coaching career
at AFL level with Brisbane Lions and then for the
Tasmanian Devils. Mathew Armstrong offered
some reflections for the Record and said it was one
of the ‘crowning moments’ in his football career.
“At the time it was a great achievement in a
reasonably strong competition to go through
undefeated.”
“As the years go on it means more and my respect
for the people involved has become greater.”
“Everyone becomes wiser and I realise that it is a
significant achievement to be a leader amongst
a group of young men, and many others in the
wings of the Club, all striving for and achieving the
one goal to such a high standard.”
Tasmanian Coaching Coups
Tasmanian football clubs have pulled off some
stunning recruitment coups over the course of a
century of football.
Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes
The diminutive Checker Hughes was a classy
player for Richmond in the period 1914 to 1923,
including the Tigers first premierships in 1921-
22. He started his senior coaching career at
Ulverstone and with the NWFU from 1924-26. His
success with the Robins saw him quickly snapped
back up by Richmond. His initial years as a
VFL coach saw him come up against a rampant
Collingwood combination for grand final losses
in 1928, 29 and 30. Another loss to Geelong
followed in 1931 before the breakthrough came
in 1932 with a premiership over Carlton. In 1933
Checker Hughes moved to Melbourne and scored
4 premierships in 1939, 40, 41 and 1948.
Cazaly, Collier and Warne-Smith
Arguably the three best players to ever come to
Tasmania to coach football were Australian Hall of
Fame members Roy Cazaly, Albert Collier and Ivor
Warne – Smith. Cazaly has been duly recognised
in Victoria and Tasmania for his contribution to
football. The Team of the Century coach took
first City (1928, 1930), North Hobart (1932)
and then New Town (1935, 1948, 1949 and
1951) to regional premierships. Collier won the
Brownlow in 1929 and played in a 4th successive
premiership with Collingwood in 1930. In 1931
Cananore secured his services and he promptly
won the league best and fairest award and took
the Canaries to the TFL and State Premiership.
Ivor Warne – Smith had a massive impact on
North-west Coast football for 4 years leading both
Latrobe and the NWFU to some of their finest
moments. Upon his return to Melbourne Warne
– Smith became the first dual Brownlow Medal
winner in 1926 and 1928.
Geelong’s 1963 Premiership Team
Tasmania became a favoured destination for
Geelong’s 1963 premiership team who were
seeking to take up coaching careers. No
less than 5 of their champions and an expat
Tasmanian who was at Geelong in 1963
embarked on successful coaching careers in the
Apple Isle. John Devine: led North Hobart to the
1967, 69 and 74 TFL premierships. Paul Vinar:
took over Longford for 5 seasons. Captain Fred
Wooller: set the township of Penguin alight but
couldn’t deliver the ultimate prize from 1965
to 1968. John Watts: took over the reins at
Hobart from 1966 to 1968. Brownlow Medallist
centreman Alistair Lord: sort a clearance to
Burnie in 1965 but was knocked back by the Cats
and eventually was dissuaded from the move.
Also, ex-pat Tasmanian Brian Lowe, who missed
the Geelong premiership through injury, returned
to Tasmania in 1964 to continue a stunning run
of premiership success with first Cooee and then
East Launceston through until 1971.
our great game | Tasmanian State Football Premierships
Tasmanian football clubs have competed for a
‘State Premiership’ on and off for around 100
years. The governing leagues of Tasmanian
football inaugurated an official State
Premiership in 1909 when the Premier from
the southern based TFL, namely Cananore (of
Hobart), played against the northern based
NTFA premiership team, Launceston.
The State Premiership series became hugely
popular from 1928 up until a dispute between
the TFL and NTFA halted the series in 1951.
The year 1928 was significant because the City
Club (of Launceston) had recruited the high
profile Victorian Roy Cazaly to coach and he
duly delivered the first state title for a Northern
Tasmanian club in his first season.
The State Premiership series resumed in 1954
after the North-West Football Union (NWFU)
successfully gained equal status with the NTFA
and TFL. Subsequently, the State Premiership
became a contest between the Premiership
team from the 3 major Tasmanian regions. The
period 1954 to 1973 became the second golden
era of Tasmanian state football such was the
interest and success of the series of games that
was conducted to culminate each season and
determine the best team in Tasmania.
However, new cracks began to appear in 1974,
1977 and 1979 when the three leagues could
not agree on the timing of the finals series or
their commitment to the concept. Ultimately, the
prolonged decline of the series in the early 1980s
became a major catalyst for the formation of a
Statewide League in 1986-87.
The subsequent Tasmanian State League that
was conducted up until the end of 2000 was
very successful in attracting high quality players
and coaches to Tasmania. The State League
was very popular until a number of Clubs began
to fail financially and were unable to continue in
the competition.
Regional football resumed in 2001 across
Tasmania, but there was an inability to progress
a State Premiership series for 8 long years
despite constant speculation and a failed
attempt in 2008.
The State Premiership series has been disrupted
on numerous occasions due to world wars, the
influenza pandemic of 1919 and internecine
disputes in the early 1950s, on and off in the
1970s and 1980s and again in the last decade.
Historically there is a correlation between the
relative strength and interest in a Tasmanian
State Finals series or league and the strength
of Tasmanian football at representative level. In
this regard we can expect if the new Wrest Point
Tasmanian State League is able to gain traction
amongst football players, corporate and media
supporters and fans, that a new fourth era of
Tasmanian State football will dawn and this will
strengthen Tasmanian football.
This series of articles will provide a summary of all
Tasmanian State Premiership games and a table
of premiers and runners-up. As well, there is a
feature on the greatest State Premiership games
from the 4 major eras starting with the 1920s
and 1930s. A special ‘Fantasy Final’ series will
also been provided to fill in some gaps in the
history of Tasmanian State Football Premierships.
