YOUNG GUNS | Round 1 NAB Under 18 National Championships
The Tasmania Under 18 team has played its first two games of the 2011 National
Championships since the last edition of the TSL record.
The National Championships is played over five
games, with the first two games played against
Division 1 states and the remaining three against
fellow Division two states.
Tasmania vs Victoria Country
Tasmania played host to Victoria Country at Bellerive
Oval in extremely difficult conditions for both teams,
with gale force winds blowing to the Derwent River
end of the ground.
Despite this there was a good skill level in a game
that was all about who could play to the conditions.
Tasmania was scoreless kicking against the wind in
the first quarter, despite breaking even at stoppages
and having its share of possession.
The second quarter saw Tasmania overuse
possession and not capitalise fully on its
opportunities, scoring 4 goals to Vic country’s2
against the breeze. At three quarter time Tasmania
was 46 points behind, but dramatically kicked 6
quick goals in the first half of the last quarter to bring
itself within sight of victory.
However Victoria Country steadied with two late
goals and despite Tasmania continuing to attack the
scoreboard it fell short by 22 points.
Julian Dobosz was outstanding in front of goals
kicking 7 goals straight, Larry Owen and Brody
Mihocek combined well as tall defenders and
forwards and John McKenzie was the pick of the
midfielders.
