THIS WEEK’S COVER
North-west Coast lads
Jason Laycock and Andy
Lee have followed almost
identical football journeys
and now lead the Burnie
Dockers in their quest
to become the toast of
Tasmanian football.
From the editor
After a long-weekend break we are pleased
to see the Wrest Point State League has a
fascinating round of games for Round 9.
Players and coaches will need to be up and
about to get the best outcome, but fans
cannot lose.
While there are no lay down miseres it
is hard to see Clarence and Launceston
giving any ground in their clashes with
Glenorchy and North Hobart. The other
games could go either way with the clash
for the ‘wooden spoon’ between South
Launceston and Devonport promising to be
a desperate affair.
The RECORD’s reading highlights include
Our Great Game’s look at the Burnie
Dockers and also the Young Guns progress
report of Tasmania’s U18 Nationals
campaign.
Finally, last week we featured Horrie
Gorringe’s nomination for induction in the
Australian Football Hall of Fame and we
can confirm that ‘The Little Maestro’ was
duly honoured. Gorringe was a trailblazer
in his playing days and has now, nearly
100 years later, forged a path for others
who played their career in Tasmania to be
similarly recognized.
This is indeed a proud achievement for the
Gorringe family and Tasmanian football.
VIEW FROM HERE | Finals Football harder to achieve as competition matures
This weekend’s round of matches will bring the competition to the half way point for the home
and away season, before we know it the finals series will be upon us.
This year’s finals series structure will comprise of five
teams over a four week period, in the competitions
inaugural year the finals structure comprised of six
teams over four weeks and in the second year the
finals structure comprised of six teams over five
weeks.
When AFL Tasmania and the TSL clubs met at the
completion of the 2010 season to discuss the
competition as a whole one of the main discussion
topics was the structure of the finals series. It
became apparent that all stakeholders agreed that
the competition had matured enough to evolve to
a finals structure that provides half of the teams
participating in the competition an opportunity to
play finals football.
The issue of where finals are played is at the sole
discretion of AFL Tasmania. As such AFL Tasmania
determines the venues for finals fixtures using the
following fundamental guidelines:
• The two best venues in the State being Aurora
Stadium and Bellerive Oval will be the preferred
venues.
• The teams that finish in the position of first, second
and fourth on the ladder at the completion of the
home and away season will play a final in their home
region.
• The second Semi-Final, Preliminary Final and Grand
Final will be played at either Aurora Stadium or
Bellerive Oval.
• The venue for the Grand Final will be played in the
region of the team that wins the second semi-final and
enters the Grand Final first.
The way the competition is panning out at the
moment, with Launceston sitting two games clear
in top spot and only one or two games separating
teams from second to seventh on the ladder, it will
be imperative that clubs do not let a game slip that
they may have pencilled in for a win. No doubt this
will ultimately have a bearing on the makeup of the
final five.
If the ladder remains as close at the end of the
season as it is now I am sure that we are in for an
exciting and interesting finals series.
Wrest Point State League
Editor’s Note: After Round 8 in 2010 the Wrest
Point State League also had a clear ladder leader
in Clarence. The Roos were undefeated and 3
games clear of North Hobart, Devonport and North
Launceston.
In 2010 Launceston played their best football in the
middle of the season and finished second after the
home and away, but struggled over the final 6 weeks
with consecutive trips to Hobart playing a part in
wearing the Blues down.
Lauderdale were sitting on the bottom of the ladder
at the same time of the season in 2010 with 1 win
from 8 games. They have since achieved a 50% win
/ loss ratio over the last 10 games of 2010 and the
first 8 of 2011.
OUR GREAT GAME | From Tigers and Bulldogs the Hawks and Dockers grow.
The Burnie Football Club can boast a fascinating history of more than 125 years and
can anticipate an exciting future at one of the traditional homes of football in North-west
Tasmania – West Park.
Football in Burnie has its origins dating back to the mid
1880s when ‘Emu Bay’ was formed in 1885. From
this beginning the Burnie Tigers emerged and went
on to become a powerhouse club playing in the North-
West Football Association, Burnie Football League,
North-West Football Union and Northern Tasmania
Football League.
Along the way the Tigers notched 14 premierships
with an amazing run of six flags in nine years from
1958 to 1966 – including three consecutive titles
from 1958-60. The icing on the cake was a meritorious
State premiership in 1963. Just nine years after the
Tigers started, the Cooee Bulldogs sprang to life in
the western suburbs of Burnie. The club in the green
and gold went on to also claim 14 premierships in the
same competitions, however, the Bulldogs went one
better by winning two well-celebrated State titles in
1964 and 1978. The dominance of the Tigers and the
Bulldogs in the 1950s and 1960s ensured that Burnie
was a town fiercely divided along club loyalties.
Cooee became the Burnie Hawks in 1987 when
the club entered the expanded Tasmanian Football
League. In late 1993 and against a backdrop of a
dwindling population in the city the Tigers and Hawks
boards decided to merge with teams playing in the
Hawks’ colours in the TFL.
At the end of 1994 and with North Melbourne
champion Peter German as playing coach, a historic
move was initiated. With Fremantle Football Club
entering the AFL and Burnie a sea port, German was
the main driver for the Club to adopt the Dockers’
colours and jumper. The bid had two aims – to put
in the past the lingering divide between Tigers and
Bulldogs supporters but more importantly to create
a new history. The Burnie Dockers, with German at
the helm, went on to challenge southern powerhouse
Clarence for the 1996 and 1997 TFL flags but
ultimately fell short in each grand final.
In late 2000, the club withdrew from the then
Statewide League to join the NTFL. Success
immediately followed with Collingwood’s Mick
McGuane coaching the Club to the flag in 2001, the
first of five in succession. Two of Burnie’s favourite
sons – Nick Probert (3) and Errol Bourn (1) – led the
Dockers as they secured a record equally 5 successive
titles in the NTFL.
The current crop of State League players and
supporters will enjoy the redevelopment of the clubs
iconic home ground - West Park Oval. The Burnie City
Council has brought together all sports and events in
the city through the ‘Burnie Sports and Events’. The
Council is backing up this innovative approach with
the development of the multi-purpose social and
training centre, ‘The Point, which is the centrepiece of
this collaborative effort to keep sport in Burnie at the
forefront in Tasmania.
With such a rich background and the foresight of those
in successive eras who have looked to the future,
the Burnie Dockers Football Club has a magnificent
platform to continue to build an exciting football history
for many years to come.
OUR GREAT GAME | Leading Dockers – Laycock and Lee
Andrew Lee was drafted by Essendon from
the Burnie Dockers, via the Tassie Mariners
U18s and the Tasmanian Devils, with
selection 30 in the 2004 National AFL Draft.
Lee was captain of the Tassie Mariners U18 side in
2003 and 2004, and was ranked in the top 5 for the
agility test at draft camp, which was an impressive
effort for a tall player.
Lee’s debut year at Essendon was marred by a
serious case of osteitis pubis. He was the only
senior-listed player at Essendon to fail to play a
senior game in 2005. The faith the club invested in
him was evident in the granting of the prized number
32 jumper, previously worn by club champions Barry
Davis and Tim Watson.
He made his debut in 2006 against North Melbourne
and played five games, but his subsequent seasons
were affected by injury and form and he moved
to Norwood in the SANFL for the 2009 and 2010
seasons.
Jason Laycock was drafted by Essendon from
the Tassie Mariners U18s with selection 10
in the 2002 National AFL Draft. He also made
his senior football debut for his home club, East
Devonport, in the NTFL before being drafted.
His senior career began in 2004 when he debuted
against Carlton. In 2005 Laycock’s form was such
that he was nominated for the Rising Star Medal in
round five, before straining a calf muscle missed the
last seven games of that season.
In 2006, he suffered knee and foot injuries, which
restricted him to six games. A further 19 games in
2007 and 16 games in 2008 were to be the high points
of his time with Essendon. In 2009 Laycock suffered
another foot injury and missed the entire season and
2010 was also severely disrupted by injury.
After 58 games and 36 goals for the Bombers he
returned home to Tasmania for 2011.
Careers a mirror image in so many ways
The up-bringing and football careers of the Burnie
Dockers two high profile recruits for 2011 – Jason
Laycock and Andy Lee - are in many ways a mirror
THE WEEK THAT WAS | Review of last weeks games
Lauderdale Bombers made a statement in Round 8 of the Wrest Point State League. A big
one at that.
Coming off a 185 point win and packed with stars
– you’d be forgiven if you thought Glenorchy was
headed to Lauderdale Oval for a big win. But, the
Bombers were magnificent. 14 goals to 8 after
quarter time setting up the 30 point win – and
putting the top 6 of the Wrest Point State League on
notice, with percentage now the only thing keeping
Lauderdale outside of the top half of the competition.
Hobart will be regretting taking its foot off the pedal
against North Hobart. After controlling the match
across 4 quarters the game came down to the final
minutes. Zeke Gardam won the match with a kick on
goal less than 2 minutes before the final siren. The
win was a crucial one for the Demons heading into
the mid season break – with a huge match against
Launceston at Windsor Park coming up in Round 9
after the long weekend break.
Clarence’s season continues to tick along nicely,
after the Roos secured another big win – this time
at the hands of Devonport. Mitch Williamson again
showed why he’s become one of the recruits of the
season kicking 6 goals – with Cameron Thurley
AGAIN named best on ground. The Northern
Magpies season continues to go from bad to
worse – but in some positive news, will play South
Launceston next round – the only team they have
defeated this season.
Speaking of South, the Bulldogs attempt to win a
game continues to be mission impossible after they
copped another hiding – Burnie thrashing the hosts
at Youngtown. The Dockers continue to fly under
the radar this season, with Brent Plant’s men sitting
nicely in 4th, but, will be challenged by an up and
coming Lauderdale outfit next round.
And, who is going to beat Launceston? The Blues
were once again tested, this time against North
Launceston. But the boys from Windsor Park had
all the answers, and are almost certain to finish this
season on top of the table. North Launceston’s
inconsistency continues to haunt them – and its
biggest test of the season to date will come next
round when they travel to the TCA Ground to meet
Hobart.
BURNING QUESTIONS:
Is Lauderdale going to make its first TSL finals
series? All the evidence suggests it might!
Can South Launceston turn the tables on Devonport
and get their first win for 2011?
After enjoying the long weekend off the club is
looking forward to the continued improvement
from the senior and colts teams. Over the last
few weeks there has been good signs and we
look forward to see that continue on today.
Lauderdale is a very talented young team who
came up trumps over Glenorchy in their last
outing so we need to be on top of our game right
from the start. Today’s outcome in both games
will start to shape the final five.
Upcoming Events
Today I would like to acknowledge the hard work
Refreshed and Revitalised
As we reach the midpoint of the season, both
our senior side and colts side are well poised.
The teams 2nd and 3rd respectively have hit a
recent patch of good form and we hope this can
continue.
Today is the Maroon and White Day game against
arch rival Glenorchy and the Bingley – Linton Cup
is at stake. These games have always been tough
contests and today should be no exception.
Special Mention Segment
This week’s highlighted member is Ian Oakes.
Ian has a long and distinguished association
with the Club. He is a life member and remains
actively involved as convenor of the Golden
Roos supporter group and with fund raising. Ian
runs our famous Gold Bullion Draw. Both these
services provide great support for the club raising
much needed funds.
Thank you to our sponsors and especially
Diagrind and Raine and Horne as joint major
sponsors and Parmic Fire Protection/Ampac as
naming right sponsors.
On Sunday next week the Roos venture into the
Tiger’s den at the TCA. The colts kick off the day
at 11:30am with the seniors playing at 2:00pm.
I big game lies ahead this week against South
Launceston for both the seniors and the Colts. A
win this week in the seniors means that they are
2 games clear of the bottom of the ladder as still
within touch of the rest of the ladder. For the Colts
this week is a big chance for them to register their
first win of the season. A narrow defeat last night
will hopefully mean that they will give it everything
they have got against the Bulldogs. Hopefully the
return of injured players Brad Symmons, Sam
Hess and Scott Bennetts should strengthen both
sides.
Our arch-rivals.... We meet again today on your
Welcome to the TCA ground for our fifth home
game of the season against North Launceston,
this is North Launceston’s first trip south for the
year and the second time they have played at the
TCA in this State League. On their last trip to the
TCA we defeated them by 23pts and the boys will
be looking to keep that perfect record today.
Both sides are refreshed and ready to enter the
second half of the season after the week off. If
the form line from our last game is anything to
go by our boys will be a huge chance of winning
against the Bombers and keeping the finals
chance alive.
The girls are also back in action this weekend
after a couple of weeks off. The girls are off to
the North West early on Sunday morning for
a 1pm clash against Spreyton. The girls have
been working hard on the track during the last
few weeks and are raring to go on Sunday. Next
Sunday the girls will be playing before the Colts
and Seniors so please come up that little bit
earlier and support the girls.
Congratulations to our Cara Brooke for
representing Tassie in the recent State Carnival
in Adelaide.
Membership Drive
A large membership base is important for any
sporting club. These days, it’s the ‘political
clout’ that comes from having a substantial
membership which puts a club in a strong
position.
To this end, the club is embarking on a
membership drive to build the substantial
membership base we need to enter discussions
from a position of strength. We invite (and urge!)
you to immediately renew your membership of
the club. Whether you are a past player or a longtime
supporter, we want you on our membership
books so that we can promote and safeguard this
proud club.
We are so intent on returning membership to
the numbers we had a decade ago, the club
is offering you membership for the balance
of this season and for the next at the current
membership rate. In other words, you get two
years membership for the price of one!
Look out for your membership forms in the mail
or contact admin@hobartfc.com.au and request a
membership form.
Well done to both sides last round after hard
fought wins over cross town rivals Northern
Bombers. As expected the Bombers threw
everything they had at us all night, but each side
did what they had to do to get the four points.
The boys should be feeling fresh after the long
weekend break and ready for another tough
contest against North Hobart. Last Time we met
the game was not decided until late in the last
term where we finally managed to shake the
STATE OF AFFAIRS | State Women’s Football Team – Tasmania
For the first time in the history of Tasmanian football a women’s team has worn the “Map”.
The football pioneers of the TASWAFL performed on the biggest stage in women’s football at
the 12th AFL Women’s National Championships held in Adelaide last week.
26 players from across the state, comprised
of 15 from the north (Yeoman, Spreyton and
Launceston) and 11 from the south (Hobart, North
Hobart and Clarence) were chosen to represent
our great state. Sandra Eaton from the North
Hobart Football Club was selected as Tasmania’s
first female football Captain.
One of the key objectives was to put
a competitive side on the park at the
Championships. Given the TASWAFL has only
been in existence for 4 seasons we were not
entirely sure what to expect from our own players,
let alone from the other states and territories.
Tasmania’s first game was against the Northern
Territory and our focus was our own game plan –
win the ball, protect the ball carries and run and
carry. Within 2 minutes we had our first goal!
Northern Territory kicked the next two as the girls
settled into the game, but as the quarter wore
on the girls gained more confidence and finished
the quarter off with 3 more goals. We went on to
kick another 8 goals for the game and won by 42
points. There certainly is no better way to start the
Nationals than with a win!
Although the girls were soundly beaten by NSW
and ACT our girls never gave up and held their
heads high. No one ever expected Tasmania to be
even the slightest bit competitive let alone win a
game. The Championships provided not only our
best players in the state the opportunity to play the
best in the nation, but gave us a great insight into
where we need to improve and where we currently
sit in women’s football. And it’s looking very bright.
So girls get out there and have a go – it’s only two
more years until the next National Championships!
Game 1 - Tasmania defeated Northern Territory
Goal Kickers: Kieran Hutchinson 6, Jessica
Wuetschner 3, Stephanie Shaw 2, Letita Johnston.
Editors Comment
Very even round of tipping
with all bar one tipster
achieving 4 out of 5 wins.
Tipsters with an interest
in Lauderdale’s fortunes
stuck fast and were repaid
by the Southern Bombers.
TASSIE TIPSTERS | Southern Bombers cause this week’s upset
Once again a Bombers outfit caused the upset of the
round. Lauderdale proved too good for Glenorchy
at home while Hobart were unlucky against the out
of touch North Hobart. The leading tipsters were
again close to the mark with our top three – Alfstars,
jenny9761 and hjones – all tipping 4 and maintaining
their positions on the ladder.
This week’s winner Mrs Suzanne Banks of Forcett
tipped 5 out of 5 and has won the weekly cash prize
of $250 and a Radio Sport National KB Sherrin.
YOUNG GUNS | Round 1 NAB Under 18 National Championships
The Tasmania Under 18 team has played its first two games of the 2011 National
Championships since the last edition of the TSL record.
The National Championships is played over five
games, with the first two games played against
Division 1 states and the remaining three against
fellow Division two states.
Tasmania vs Victoria Country
Tasmania played host to Victoria Country at Bellerive
Oval in extremely difficult conditions for both teams,
with gale force winds blowing to the Derwent River
end of the ground.
Despite this there was a good skill level in a game
that was all about who could play to the conditions.
Tasmania was scoreless kicking against the wind in
the first quarter, despite breaking even at stoppages
and having its share of possession.
The second quarter saw Tasmania overuse
possession and not capitalise fully on its
opportunities, scoring 4 goals to Vic country’s2
against the breeze. At three quarter time Tasmania
was 46 points behind, but dramatically kicked 6
quick goals in the first half of the last quarter to bring
itself within sight of victory.
However Victoria Country steadied with two late
goals and despite Tasmania continuing to attack the
scoreboard it fell short by 22 points.
Julian Dobosz was outstanding in front of goals
kicking 7 goals straight, Larry Owen and Brody
Mihocek combined well as tall defenders and
forwards and John McKenzie was the pick of the
midfielders.
YOUNG PLAYER AWARD | Our Rising Stars
This week’s winner is Julian Dobosz from the North Hobart Football Club.
Julian has had an impressive beginning to 2011, firstly earning a call up to senior
football at North Hobart football club and then also playing the first three games of
the season for Tasmania U18’s. In these games Julian has played as a tall forward
and kicked a total of 19 goals, with his effort of seven goals against Victoria Country
on June 5 the highlight. Equally at home with the ball on the air or on the ground
Julian’s superior judgement of the ball in flight and competitive spirit have been
some of the keys to his success.
