YOUNG GUNS | State Academy Program begins well in 2011 Welcome to the first edition of Young Guns for season 2011. Throughout the year we will follow talented young players around the state and provide insightful stories into the progress of these players through both the Wrest Point State League and the Tasmania Under 16 and Under 18 Academy programs. Season 2011 is the second year of a new National talent development program known as the State Academies Program. The State Academies exist at Under 16 and Under 18 level and replace the previous Under 16 and Under 18 or Tassie Mariners programs. Forty players in both the Under 18 and Under 16 age groups are selected to form two State Academy squads that will train and be developed collectively and individually over the 2011 season. The focus is on season long development of individual players, rather than just the preparation of a State team to travel to the National Championships. 2011 State Academy Program Coaching Staff • State Academy U18 Coach – Mathew Armstrong • State Academy U16 Coach – Adam Sanders • Strength & Conditioning & Rehabilitation Manager – David Kinsella • North-west Academy U18 Assistant – Richard Lakeland • Southern Academy U18 Assistants – Dale Gorringe & Lance Spaulding • North-west Academy U16 Assistant– Troy Davies • Southern Academy U16 Assistant – Nick Davey • Northern Academy Assistant – Scott Stephens Players in the Under 18 age group trained regionally around the state in a 6 week selection period prior to Christmas. They have since been completing up to 5 group and individual sessions a week based on their individual development programs and have attended two camps. Critical to the development of players in the program will be the opportunity to train and play with their home Wrest Point State League clubs. This is a terrific environment for young talented players to experience a different type of development and is one of the advantages that our young players have over some programs interstate, for example the TAC Cup. April sees all State Under 18 Academy members playing the first four rounds with their Wrest Point State League clubs, prior to a 7 game Under 18 campaign. Tasmania will host four U16 or U18 State games in 2011 on the following dates: Saturday May 14 Tasmania v Sandringham U18 Bellerive Oval - 10:20am Sunday June 5 Tasmania v Victoria Country U18 Bellerive Oval - 11:30am Saturday June 25 Tasmania v NSW/ACT U18 Aurora Stadium - 12 noon Tasmania v NSW/ACT U16 Aurora Stadium - 2:30pm Nick Probert State Talent Manager 20
YOUNG PLAYER AWARD | Our Rising Stars Corporate Express will again sponsor an award aimed at the development of talented young players who will play in AFL Tasmania’s Talent Pathway program games and the Wrest Point State League. The Corporate Express Young Player of the Year will involve the nomination of a young player each week. Each week during the season one young player will be nominated as the weekly Rising Star nominee for the week. At the end of the year a judging panel will determine the best individual who will be named the Corporate Express Young Player who will receive a computer and software package donated by Corporate Express. The winner will receive their prize at the Tassie Medal Award presentation at the conclusion of the season.
