40 Tasmanian State Fixture 2011
From the editor
With the on-set of winter the Wrest Point
State League cranked back into action
with a cold but sunny day on Saturday and
a wet and windy experience on Sunday in
Launceston. Results went as expected
on Saturday, but on Sunday Launceston
inflicted North Hobart’s heaviest defeat in
the history of the league and the Bulldogs
finally broke through for a win over
Devonport that lifted them clear of last
spot on the ladder.
This week’s round of games has two
fascinating encounters involving North
Hobart versus Lauderdale and North
Launceston versus Burnie in clashes that
will shape the final five. As well, could
South Launceston cause an upset over a
depleted Glenorchy outfit? Time will tell.
The RECORD’s reading highlights include
Our Great Game’s look at the Devonport
Football Club and also Launceston’s Club
Notes where they look at the tremendous
achievement of Beau Green in being only
the 5th player from the Blues to reach 200
senior games in their long history which
reaches back to 1875.
Rug up and enjoy the footy this weekend.
VIEW FROM HERE | Nine wins is the aim for finalists
In the previous two years of the State League competition on average clubs winning nine or
more games in the home and away season have seen them participating in finals.
If the number of wins prove to be nine to procure a 2011
finals birth then based on the current win / loss ratios it
would appear that only seven clubs remain in contention
to grab the available five spots.
When you analyse the games that are left for the
remainder of the year it sure does provide a great
appetite leading into finals, let’s take a look at the seven
contenders club by club of who their remaining games
are against and how many wins they need to reach the
preferred nine winning games.
Launceston Blues – Play Devonport (x2), Burnie (x2),
South Launceston (x2), Glenorchy, North Launceston
and Hobart. It would be fair to assume that if the Blues
remain injury free they should continue on their winning
way and end the home and away season undefeated.
Clarence Roos – South Launceston, Lauderdale (x2),
North Hobart (x2), North Launceston, Devonport,
Glenorchy and Hobart. The Roos need a further two
wins out of the remaining games and should account for
these to embark on their tilt for triple premiership status.
Burnie Dockers – North Launceston (x2), Launceston
(x2), Devonport (x2), South Launceston, Hobart and
Glenorchy. The Dockers should achieve three more wins
to reach nine but can ill afford to drop a game that they
would have pencilled in.
Glenorchy Magpies – South Launceston, North Hobart
(x2), Hobart, Launceston, Lauderdale, Clarence, North
Launceston and Burnie. The Magpies have had a bad
month due to an injury plagued list after coming out of
the blocks early and currently have five wins. Coach
Byron Howard will be sweating on having his full list
together for the run home.
North Launceston Bombers – Burnie (x2), Devonport
(x2), Lauderdale, Clarence, Launceston, Glenorchy and
South Launceston. The Northern Bombers are sitting on
the same amount of wins as Glenorchy and the biggest
question they face is can they put together enough
consistent football to achieve the additional four wins
needed.
North Hobart Demons – Lauderdale (x2), Glenorchy
(x2), Clarence (x2), Devonport, South Launceston and
Hobart. The Demons are also sitting on the same
amount of wins as Glenorchy and North Launceston
and can ill afford to drop games against Lauderdale and
Glenorchy for the required four wins to reach nine which
may ultimately halt their endeavours to play finals.
Lauderdale Bombers – North Hobart (x2), Clarence
(x2), North Launceston, Hobart (x2), Glenorchy and
South Launceston. The Southern Bombers are sitting
on one less win than Glenorchy, North Hobart and North
Launceston but have shown great improvement in 2011
and will need to overcome the opposition placed higher
on the ladder than them to win five out of the next nine.
The three clubs that are out of contention - Hobart,
South Launceston and Devonport - can play a leading
role in determining the makeup of the final five by
causing some upsets along the way.
Shaun Young
General Manager
Wrest Point State League
Editor’s Note: The 2 year history of the Wrest Point
State League has seen 4 teams finish with 9 wins and 9
losses at the end of the roster series of games.
In the inaugural year 2009 – Launceston finished 5th
and North Hobart finished 6th both on 9 wins and 9
losses.
While in 2010 – North Hobart finished 5th and North
Launceston finished 6th both on 9 wins and 9 losses.
In both 2009 and 2010 a final six was used so all
4 teams contested the finals series played in those
seasons.
In 2011 a final five finals series will be contested,
suggesting that winning 9 games may be only half the
requirement to make the finals. A healthy percentage
is the other likely requirement to progress to September
action.
OUR GREAT GAME | Devonport: rich in football history
The origins of football in Tasmania’s North West coastal region are uncertain. It is possible
that the game was played in mining settlements from the 1870s, brought there from the
mainland, or by miners who travelled west from Launceston.
By 1881, however, the game was definitely being
played in both Latrobe and Devonport with clubs
being formed in both settlements.
The Devonport club was known as Formby, and this
became the Devonport Football Club in 1890. The
Club has, with the exception of the 1900 season,
been a permanent fixture in Tasmanian football ever
since.
A major landmark in the development of football
in the region came in 1910 with the establishment
of the 5 club North West Football Union which
Devonport joined in 1911. The club reached its first
grand final in 1914, downing Latrobe, and it repeated
this success the following year over Ulverstone.
Football was in recess from 1916-1918 due to the
Great War, and its resumption in 1919 was curtailed
throughout Australia due to the influenza epidemic.
In 1920 and 1921 Devonport fielded a 2nd team,
known as ‘Diggers’, which comprised returning
servicemen. This team won the 1921 NWFU
premiership with a win over Latrobe.
New club Burnie proved Devonport’s nemesis
on each of its next 2 grand final appearances, in
1927 and 1928, and the following year the entire
competition was thrown into disarray when the
Forth Bridge, which linked Latrobe and Devonport
to the other settlements in the area, washed away.
The 1929 and 1930 seasons saw Devonport and
Latrobe play against Deloraine and Kentish in an
‘Eastern Division’ of the NWFU. Dissatisfied with this
arrangement, Devonport withdrew from the NWFU in
1931 and spent the next 3 seasons participating in
the NWFA, winning a premiership in 1933.
In 1934 Devonport re-entered the new one
divisional NWFU and found the break at the height
of the Great Depression had not diminished their
competitiveness. The Club promptly reached the
next 5 grand finals, winning in 1934, 1936 and
1938.
While the Club has encountered lean times in
respect of premierships won at regional level since
the 1930s, only breaking through in 1981 for a
memorable triumph in the NWFU, many former
Devonport players have gone on to be community
leaders and outstanding citizens. More recently
Devonport has produced AFL players such as
Matthew Richardson, Jade and Brady Rawlings and
Grant Birchall.
Devonport also retains the honour of being the first
and only north-west Club to triumph in the original
Statewide competition. In the 1988 season the
Club was known as the Devonport Blues and much
acclaim surrounded the defeat of Glenorchy at North
Hobart Oval in arguably the most rugged State Grand
Final in Tasmanian football history.
OUR GREAT GAME | C is for Courage, Character and Commitment
C is for Courage, Character and Commitment
What does the letter ‘C’ stand for at Devonport
Football Club. Well courage, character and
commitment are required at the Magpies this year as
the Club goes through a major rebuilding effort and
reliance on youth after a tumultuous 2010 on and
off the field.
As well, ‘C’ stands for Clements, Colbeck and
Crowden. The three veterans of the Devonport
Magpies have enjoyed the good times, including
multiple grand final appearances, and are sticking
fast through the more difficult times. In 2011 they
have committed again to ensure their beloved team
is not completely bereft of the experience required to
suit up and play in the Wrest Point State League.
Player Pen Pics
ALAN CLEMENTS (32 yo) – 183cm and 95kg. A
strong reliable defender, who has very good second
efforts once the ball has been spoiled.
RHYS COLBECK (27 yo) – 192cm and 112kg. One
of Devonport’s best kicks at goal. For a big bloke he
is quick over 30 metres and takes a good mark on
the lead.
PHILLIP CROWDEN (27 yo) – 178cm and 79kg. Mr.
Versatile. Phil has played all over the ground in
recent years and previously a century goal kicker
with the club.
Mr Versatile – Phil Crowden
Phil Crowden is nearing 200 senior games for
Devonport and has kicked more the 350 goals in the
Northern Tasmanian Football League and the Wrest
Point State League.
After debuting in April 2001 against Deloraine, Phil
has been a regular in the seniors and a key player in
the multiple Magpie assaults on premiership titles
in the last decade. Although Devonport has failed to
win a title in this period, Crowden’s career with the
Pies has still seen many highlights.
Career Highlights:
• 117 Goals in 2007.
• 2007 leading goalkicker.
• 2007 NTFL Senior Representative side.
• 2001 NTFL under 18 Representative side.
THE WEEK THAT WAS | Review of last weeks games
Any thoughts Clarence would give up its crown without a fight have been completely dispelled
as the Roos put one of the early season premiership favourites to the sword at Bellerive Oval
on Saturday.
Glenorchy started the season on fire, including a
convincing win over Clarence, but injuries have
beset the Magpies, resulting in four losses in
five weeks. Clarence is starting to put together a
possible premiership team, with Matthew Drury and
Ben Setchell, while the Magpies were without cocaptain
and best player Jaye Bowden, key midfielder
Rhys Mott, ruckman Simon Spencer, boom recruit
Jason Akermanis and veteran Mark Corbett. While
dominating general play, Clarence could not find
the big opening, returning just seven goals from 26
scoring shots at three quarter time, leaving the Pies
just 14 points in arrears at the last change and well
in the game. But the Roos dominance resulted in
goals in the last term as they piled on eight goals to
three.
Notwithstanding the Roos form, Launceston remains
the premiership favourite after dishing out a
112-point hiding to North Hobart at Windsor Park on
Sunday. While Brian Finch up forward was superb
with another seven goals, the Blues defence was
just as impressive restricting the Demons to just one
goal at the last change. The Demons were without
captain Ken Hall for the first time due to an ankle
injury, but this was no excuse for the embarrassing
performance.
North Launceston ended Hobart’s finals chances at
the TCA with a 28 point win, set up in the first term.
The Northern Bombers jumped the sluggish Tigers,
racing out to a 31-point lead at the first change. The
Tigers whittled down the lead to just nine points early
in the final quarter and it seemed they were charging
home. But Darren Crawford kicking a great goal –
his third for the game – before 17-year-old Zac Burt
sealed the visitors win with the last two majors of the
game.
Burnie held off the in-form Lauderdale at West Park
with a 32-point victory set up with a five goal to one
third term. Andrew Lee and Rohan Baldock both
kicked four apiece for the victors while young forward
Ryan Wiggins was inspirational for the vanquished,
booting six of his side’s nine goals.
There was also great joy at the foot of the ladder
as South Launceston handed over last-place to
Devonport with a 45-point win over the Northern
Magpies at Youngtown Oval on Sunday. The Bulldogs
set up their first win of the season with five goals
to none in the opening term, with forward Braden
McGee finishing with five majors for the match as
Mitch Hills registered his maiden victory as coach.
BURNING QUESTIONS:
How will North Hobart and Lauderdale react when
they meet again for the first time after the fiery round
one clash?
With the season reaching the halfway point it
is pleasing to have both sides sitting 3rd on the
ladder. The Colts under Andrew Hering have done
a fantastic job especially over the last few weeks.
With a number of key injuries at the club this has
really tested our depth. The positive has been the
opportunities for our younger players to step up
and have a taste of TSL senior and colts football.
The Club would like to congratulate Eli Templeton
on making the State U/16 team. Eli is a great
example of our club pathway coming through
our juniors, starting off this year in the colts and
has played the last 2 games in our senior team
along side is older brother Jack. It is good to see
the Templeton family involvement at the Club
continuing on.
Over the Hill...
Our colts took of an under manned Glenorchy
outfit and blew them away early and never looked
back. Lead strongly by Brad Coad and Rohan
Williams, the game was won by 107 points.
Donning the maroon guernsey our senior side,
went out to send a message to the competition.
Inaccurate kicking kept the magpies in the game
until the final change, but our boys proved to be
far too strong. Lead by best on ground medal
winner Jackson O’Brien and Brennan Savage the
Roos ran out 46 point winners.
Welcome to the TCA for our second Sunday
game of the season, today we look forward to
the challenge of playing against the premiers of
the last two seasons in Clarence. Today we have
a football feast with three matches. First up we
have the women in action at 9.30am followed by
the Colts and then the seniors to round off the
day. I hope you enjoy your Sunday at the footy.
Seniors & Colts
Another situation of close games that if our boys
made the most of their moments could have
provided a different result at the end of the day.
The improvement in the Colts was evident again
on the weekend and both sides are on the verge
of winning.
Women’s Team
Last Sunday the women’s team ventured up the
highway to Spreyton, in wet and heavy conditions
the girls put in another good performance and
are working closer to that next win. Today will be a
bigger challenge as they take on the undefeated
Clarence side. If you can’t make it up the highway
to Youngtown next Saturday to watch the seniors
and Colts why not come along to the TCA on
Sunday and support the girls.
The upcoming games are as follows
• Today 9.30am start v Clarence at TCA
• 3rd of July - 12 noon start v North Hbt at TCA
• 10th of July – 12 noon start v Yeoman at TCA
The Lauderdale under 13 team has had a great
start to the season, being undefeated up until the
holiday break. They have responded well to some
hard challenges from teams close to them on
the ladder. Reid Hooker is coaching well and the
teams fitness is improving all the time.
The under 14 team coached by Skip Cook had
a slow start to the season, but are growing in
confidence and are starting to challenge the other
teams in A division and Skipper will be looking to
a strong finish to the season.
The under 16 team, coached by Mick Hibberd is
having a solid year, sitting in the top 5 despite
the majority of the side being only 14 years old.
The teams focus is to make the finals and to
Beau Green 200th
This weekend’s senior game against Devonport
will see club stalwart Beau Green play his 200th
senior game.
This is a significant milestone for the club as Beau
becomes only the fifth player in the clubs proud
136 year history to do so. He joins club legends
in Coach of the Team of the Century Leo McAuley,
Gary Davis, Peter Scott and games record holder
Paul Ellis in the 200 club.
Beau has played all of his football at Windsor
Park, making his way through the grades of the
Launceston juniors until joining the senior club in
the late nineties. He was a member of the 1998
U18 NTFL Premiership Team before making his
debut in 1999 under Coach Brett Hadley.
Since making his debut Beau has been a regular
in the senior team with his dashing pace, attack
on the football and raking left foot kick becoming
a real trademark of the Blues defense, this
culminated in Beau winning his first club B&F in
2002.
But it wasn’t until Adam Sanders arrived at
Windsor Park when Beau started to take his
football to another level, he was fitter, faster and
stronger than he had ever been and it started
to show with the Blues starting to make regular
finals appearances.
Beau was an integral member of the Blues hattrick
of premierships in 2006, 2007 and 2008,
he was Co-captain in Anthony Taylor’s absence in
2006 and was also Co-captain in 2007 and 2008.
Beau enjoyed a stellar 2007 when he represented
the NTFL and claimed his second club B&F.
Enter 2009 and the newly formed State League,
this year would turn out to be one of the most
disappointing for Beau. He injured his knee in
a club practice match and would never recover
despite many attempts, finally succumbing to a
knee reconstruction in May. His determination
was very evident that he wanted to return to
his best, he was always at the club undergoing
his rehabilitation and providing support for the
players.
In 2010 Beau made his long awaited comeback
Proud Sponsors
with the Blues and after displaying solid form was
selected to represent Tasmania under Mathew
Armstrong against Queensland. Beau re injured
his knee in this game and despite missing a
month he returned to the Blues to be one of their
best in the finals.
After a full pre season under his belt, Beau is
back to his best leading the backline and showing
the way for our young players to follow.
We wish Beau all the best for his 200th game,
the remainder of the 2011 season and his career
with the Mighty Blues!!
on a great team effort. We got away to a great
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Developing safer and healthier communities.
AFL Tasmania supports the Good Sports Program
Traditionally, alcohol and sport have been closely linked in Australia. Community-based sports clubs can
play an important part in reducing alcohol problems by promoting safe drinking and providing appropriate
role models for young people.
What is the Good Sports program?
A national initiative of the Australian Drug
Foundation, the Good Sports program aims to
develop safer and healthier communities.
It is a free program that helps sporting clubs
change their culture to become more focussed
on young people and families, and less on the
consumption of alcohol at high risk levels.
Good Sports works to create sustainable change
by enabling sporting clubs to change their systems
and practices around the responsible serving of
alcohol. The program has been developed to:
• Reduce general alcohol consumption and risky
drinking,
• Reduce alcohol-related problems, particularly
drink driving
• Increase viability and influence within the
community.
Displaying the Good Sports logo sends an
important message to club members and the
community. It confirms that the club promotes a
responsible attitude towards alcohol, providing a
safe environment for players, members, families
and supporters. This brings many benefits to
the participating clubs and helps to build more
connected, satisfied and resilient communities
where violence, drink driving and road trauma is
reduced. It also helps to improve the health and
fitness of community members resulting in more
viable and family focused sporting clubs.
The Australian Drug Foundation is also launching
the “Build your game program” a mental health
intitiative, within sporting clubs.
If your sporting club is one of a large number
across Tasmania who has previously been involved,
we encourage you to re-register your interest. Of
course, new clubs are also welcome to register and
AFL Tasmania is encouraging all footy clubs to show
their support for this program and get involved.
You can find out more about Goods Sports and
register your club online at www.goodsports.com.au
TASSIE TIPSTERS | Bulldogs, Bombers and Blues rise to top
A first for the new State League as the northern
teams all won for the first time ever on the same
weekend. The Blues were favoured but the Bombers
and Bulldogs wins were meritorious. The tipsters
had some ups and downs also. Hjones took the
lead, while Alfstars has dropped to second spot and
jenny9761 has dropped off the leader board.
This week’s winner Mr Jarrod Free of Honeywood
tipped 5 out of 5 and has won the weekly cash prize
YOUNG GUNS | Round 2 NAB Under 18 National Championships
The National Championships is played over five games,
with the first two games played against Division 1 states
and the remaining three against fellow Division two
states.
Tasmania v Western Australia
Tasmania made the long trip over to Perth on the
Queen’s Birthday long weekend to tackle another
Division 1 team in WA at Patersons Stadium. This
game was played as a curtain raiser to the Fremantle V
Essendon game.
The game was played in perfect conditions on the
massive ground with the temperature sitting at 17
degrees at the first bounce.
The players had enjoyed a good build up to the game but
didn’t get the start we were looking for to trail by 5 goals
at quarter time. The speed, athleticism and ball winning
ability of the WA players was proving a handful for the
Tassie boys who constantly found themselves caught
between the ball carrier and the next contest.
The second quarter and nothing changed too much as
WA were able to kick 4 goals to Tassie’s zero to leave us
with the unflattering total of 1 point at half time.
After some very honest individual appraisals at half time
by coach Mathew Armstrong, the Tassie boys came out
with a better work rate and were able to outscore WA 3.4
to 3.2, which was a much improved effort.
Unfortunately, the boys were unable to sustain this work
rate and were outscored by the slick WA outfit 5 goals
to 1 goal in the last quarter. The final margin was an 87
point defeat.
Jesse Lonergan and Marty Allison worked hard in the
midfield and collected 20 possessions each. Brody
Mihocek at CHB and Henry Schade at FB stood tall
under a barrage of forward entries to be very good
before they were both moved forward later in the game.
Quade Byard played a very solid game across half back
also.
The Tasmanian U18s and U16s play a double header
at Aurora Stadium against their respective NSW/ACT
opponents on Saturday 25th June. Both teams now
play the other division 2 teams of NSW/ACT, Northern
Territory and Queensland over the next 3 weeks.
Western Australia 5.3 9.5 12.7 17.13 (115)
