This week’s Wrest Point State<br />

League RECORD cover highlights and<br />

congratulates Launceston’s Beau Green<br />

who played his 200th senior game against<br />

Devonport last week.<br />

The RECORD caught up with Beau’s<br />

longest senior coach (7 years), Adam<br />

Sanders, and he explained that: “Beau has<br />

been a tremendous player for Launceston<br />

over the last 10 years. I saw him develop<br />

from a good young player with potential<br />

into an ultra competitive, powerful, hard<br />

running halfback / centreman who was<br />

able to play offensive and defensive roles<br />

for the team. Beau was probably the first<br />

of the now senior Blues to take onboard<br />

the importance of preparation, recovery<br />

and fitness to take his football to a better<br />

level. A premiership captain, twice B&F<br />

and now 200 game player. Beau will be<br />

remembered amongst the Blues very best<br />

players and as a great clubman.”<br />

VIEW FROM HERE | A week is a long time in football....<br />

The catch cry of a “week is a long time in football” is certainly relevant to the State League<br />

competition at the moment and will continue to be as the home and away season draws<br />

closer to an end.<br />

Last week’s results meant there were some positional<br />

changes to the ladder, including the following:<br />

• Clarence who were sitting 2nd only a game clear now<br />

find themselves 2 games clear of the 3rd placed team<br />

and have now made it difficult to be dislodged from<br />

2nd spot.<br />

• Burnie who were sitting 3rd prior to last weekend are<br />

now sitting 4th after their loss.<br />

• Glenorchy who were sitting 4th prior to last week are<br />

now sitting 3rd.<br />

• North Launceston prior to last weekend were sitting<br />

5th on the ladder by percentage have now gone a<br />

game clear inside the 5.<br />

• North Hobart who was sitting 6th just outside the five<br />

on percentage is now a game outside of the five and in<br />

7th spot.<br />

• Lauderdale who were 2 games outside the five in 7th<br />

position prior to last weekend now find themselves in<br />

6th and only one game outside the five.<br />

This weekend’s schedule of matches provides a number<br />

of contests that could see the results go either way<br />

which may change where clubs are positioned come<br />

Monday.<br />

The other thing that occurred this week was North<br />

Hobart’s Head Coach, Clinton Brown, tendered his<br />

resignation to the Club; Clinton was the last remaining<br />

playing-coach in the State league competition.<br />

Clinton’s comments in the media included “I just think<br />

at the moment being a playing-coach is too tough at<br />

this level” and “you need to have your eyes in the box<br />

all the time to see what is going on and at the moment<br />

doing it on the ground is just too difficult”. This poses an<br />

interesting conundrum for TSL Clubs as to whether the<br />

appointment of a playing-coach or non playing coach will<br />

deliver the right structure for the Club to be successful.<br />

If you look at “Best Practice”, which is the AFL, the<br />

current day football environment demands that people<br />

heading up the football club in a coaching capacity<br />

should have a ‘helicopter view’ on game day and<br />

implement their own strategies and structures by seeing<br />

them first hand from afar, rather than being on the<br />

ground and receiving the information second hand.<br />

What I am sure of is that Clubs will appoint the most<br />

appropriate person for the role whether that is a playing<br />

or non-playing coach to achieve the outcomes that their<br />

core business warrants and desires, but it does provide<br />

for an interesting debate.<br />

Editor’s Note: The last time that a playing coach was<br />

engaged in the AFL / VFL was way back in 1979 when<br />

Alex Jesaulenko led Carlton to the Premiership. Along<br />

with John Nichols at Carlton in 1972 they are the only<br />

instances of successful playing coaches at this level in<br />

the last 50 years.<br />

Tasmanian Brett Geappen led Clarence to the State<br />

League title as a playing coach in 2009, but, arguably,<br />

some of the most successful Tasmanian coaches of<br />

recent years have been non-playing such as Matthew<br />

Armstrong, Adam Sanders, David Newitt, Grant Fagan,<br />

Andy Bennett and Garry Davidson.<br />

Daniel Muir has been playing with Glenorchy Football Club since<br />

2006. The past three seasons have seen him become a regular senior<br />

player and moved from his original position as a forward to a key<br />

defender in Glenorchy’s backline. ‘Shitty’ to his team mates, Daniel is<br />

a reliable player who always gives his all and is enjoying a great return<br />

to form.<br />

OUR GREAT GAME | IAN CALLINAN<br />

THE most asked question in Tasmanian football for the past decade will be answered this<br />

season: how will Ian Callinan go at AFL level?<br />

After 10 years of being overlooked by recruiters<br />

and overshadowed by less credentialed players,<br />

the Adelaide Crows finally took a punt on the skilful<br />

forward-midfielder when he was taken pick 64 in last<br />

year’s rookie draft as a then 27-year-old. Superbly<br />

skilled with an innate instinct to find the goals,<br />

Callinan had been constantly overlooked since being<br />

an under-18 All-Australian in 2000.<br />

Despite the numerous set-backs, including doing<br />

pre-season training with Collingwood, Essendon,<br />

North Melbourne and Richmond to no avail, he<br />

persevered, winning the VFL best and fairest in 2005<br />

while playing for the Devils, before taking his skills<br />

to SANFL club Central District. He has played in four<br />

consecutive flags for the SA Bulldogs, winning the<br />

club best and fairest twice and was best on ground<br />

in last year’s SANFL grand final, kicking four-goals<br />

in the six-point win. Regarded as the best player in<br />

Australia outside the AFL, the Crows finally selected<br />

the small forward-midfielder.<br />

On the opening night of the NAB Cup season<br />

Adelaide coach Neil Craig issued a public apology to<br />

his new recruit: “Even now I’m not sure how far Ian<br />

will go, that will be up to him. But seeing him on the<br />

track, I hate to say it guys, but the recruiters of the<br />

AFL - and we’re in it - have done him a disservice. He<br />

should’ve been in the competition five years ago.”<br />

But, just when his AFL quest was about to be fulfilled,<br />

heartache struck again as he tore the bicep off the<br />

bone in the final practice game, sidelining Callinan<br />

for 10 weeks. Now, after two games in the SANFL, he<br />

is set for his AFL debut, taking on Geelong at Skilled<br />

Stadium tomorrow - one of the oldest debutants in<br />

the modern era.<br />

Callinan said he learned to live with the constant<br />

snub, not dwelling on players picked up who lacked<br />

his natural football ability while he honed his skills in<br />

the lower leagues. He was never given a definitive<br />

reason why he was not selected but believed his<br />

height - at just 172cm - was a factor and the trend<br />

at the time to draft tall, athletes and then try to<br />

turn them into footballers rather than the other<br />

way round. Callinan said: “That is probably the one<br />

thing that has always frustrated me. When I sat<br />

down with Neil to have a coffee, he said to me, ‘Why<br />

haven’t you been on a list?’ That’s something I’ve<br />

never got any feedback on, which has been a little<br />

bit disappointing but that’s the way it goes. I’ve got<br />

no doubt in my mind my height has gone against<br />

me but there are some guys who have been going<br />

all right as small crumbers lately like [Collingwood’s<br />

174cm premiership forward Jarryd] Blair and those<br />

sorts of guys. That has probably turned it around a<br />

little bit. Early days it was more the athletic type,<br />

they went away from the genuine footballers for more<br />

the athlete they were trying to turn into a footballer. I<br />

reckon it is starting to turn back the other way a bit.”<br />

Callinan’s former Devils coach, ex-Fitzroy and<br />

North Melbourne midfielder Mathew Armstrong<br />

believes AFL clubs’ pride and ego also had a lot to<br />

do with it. Armstrong was instrumental in Callinan’s<br />

development, as he and assistant coach Lance<br />

Spaulding turned the 86kg tubby teenager into a<br />

72kg elite footballer by making him ride up and down<br />

Mt Wellington’s numerous bike tracks. Armstrong<br />

said of Callinan’s constant draft snubs” “I’m<br />

amazed, I think sometimes recruiters or people in<br />

the football industry don’t want to look back and<br />

admit they made a mistake. That’s the only way I<br />

can look at it. He just kept putting his name up all<br />

the time. I can understand where the game was at<br />

at the time. The philosophy back then was let’s get<br />

the 190cm-plus athlete and try and turn him into a<br />

footballer. It was all the rage. Now all of a sudden,<br />

especially with the high possession footy they<br />

are playing now, they actually need the footballer<br />

again - the bloke who can actually use it to maintain<br />

possession a lot more.”<br />

Former Mariners coach Hamish Ogilvie also played a<br />

big part in Callinan’s selection. For years, the Crows<br />

had been struggling to find a crumbing forward.<br />

Ogilvie, now Adelaide’s Victorian recruiting officer,<br />

kept throwing up the Tasmanian’s name to no avail<br />

until finally Callinan’s standout performances could<br />

not go unheralded and he was invited along to preseason<br />

training.<br />

Callinan, affectionately known as “Wingnut” due to<br />

the size of his ears, said it was a surreal day back<br />

on December 7 when his name was finally read out.<br />

Callinan said: “It is hard to describe, it is something<br />

I’ve wanted to do for 10 years. I was actually at<br />

training at the time. They said, ‘If everything falls<br />

your way there is a good chance you’ll get on the list,’<br />

but they hadn’t said, ‘We are definitely going to take<br />

you.’ I was training and walked off the track and ...<br />

a few of the boys were watching on the internet and<br />

I didn’t know whether to watch it or not. All the guys<br />

said, ‘You’ve got to watch it,’ and I said ‘Well what<br />

happens if I don’t get picked?’ It would have been an<br />

eerie feeling, but I sat down and watched it and there<br />

was a roar in the changerooms when my name was<br />

read out which was a good feeling.”<br />

However being drafted gives no guarantees. On a<br />

one-year rookie contract and now 28, Callinan knows<br />

he has to make an impression this season or his AFL<br />

dream will disappear as quickly as it arrived.<br />

Armstrong has no doubt his prodigy can make an<br />

impact at AFL level. “I had a beer with him just<br />

before Christmas, gee he’s in ripping nick. He’s<br />

really cut, he’s built well. Good on him. As the year’s<br />

went on he shrugged it [the AFL snubs] off a little bit<br />

easier. He always had a great passion to play at the<br />

highest level. It is a fantastic story.”<br />

After this season there might be a new question<br />

asked, and not just from those in Tasmania; why<br />

wasn’t Ian Callinan playing AFL for the past decade?<br />

THE WEEK THAT WAS | Review of last weeks games<br />

North Hobart’s horror stretch is becoming a nightmare as the Demons slumped to their fourth<br />

loss in five rounds, this time to Lauderdale at North Hobart Oval.<br />

To make matters worse, the Demons No.1 ruckman<br />

Matthew Muir broke his collarbone and midfielder<br />

Zane Murphy, was booked for striking the Bombers<br />

Josh Spaulding in the second quarter. The 35-point<br />

loss saw the star-studded North Hobart drop to<br />

seventh and resulted in coach Clinton Brown<br />

standing down on Monday, replaced by former Devils<br />

coach Lance Spaulding. Lauderdale was brilliant in<br />

the first half, racing to a 37-point half-time lead, led<br />

by forward pocket Sam O’Byrne who set up the win<br />

with five first-half goals. North Hobart rallied in the<br />

second half with Jesse Wells booting four of his five<br />

goals after the break. With two early majors to start<br />

the last term, the Demons moved to within 12 points<br />

but the baby Bombers showed great maturity with<br />

five of the last six goals to run out deserved victors.<br />

Jack Siggins was impassable at centre half-back for<br />

Lauderdale.<br />

North Launceston continues to impress with arguably<br />

its best win of the season, a thrilling five-point victory<br />

over Burnie at Aurora Stadium. Burnie led at the first<br />

three changes but the Northern Bombers 2.5 to 1.4<br />

in the last term was enough to see them move to<br />

equal third on points with the Dockers and Glenorchy<br />

and stay one game clear of sixth-placed Lauderdale.<br />

Allan O’Sign kicked a game high three goals for North<br />

Launceston while veteran Michael Praciak continued<br />

his good form with a best afield performance.<br />

Clarence is now two games clear in second spot after<br />

smashing Hobart by 133-points at the TCA Ground.<br />

The Roos kept Hobart goalless until half-way through<br />

the third term, and banged on seven goals in the first<br />

quarter and nine in the last in the massive win. TSL<br />

star Cameron Thurley kicked five - two more than the<br />

entire Hobart team - and was just one of 11 goalkickers<br />

for Clarence.<br />

Top of the table Launceston handed out a mother<br />

of a hiding away to last-placed Devonport. The<br />

Blues were held to a four-point lead at quarter time,<br />

but from then on smashed through 23 goals to<br />

four for a 130-point flogging. Brian Finch bagged<br />

another seven-goal haul while mobile big man Joe<br />

Groenewegen was best on ground.<br />

Glenorchy moved to third spot on percentage with a<br />

93-point thrashing of South Launceston at KGV Oval.<br />

Former Brownlow Medallist Jason Akermanis kicked<br />

four goals, as did captain Jon Bowring and Zac Webb.<br />

The Southern Magpies set up the win with a 10-goal<br />

to nil second quarter and then cruised to victory.<br />

BURNING QUESTIONS:<br />

Will the resignation of playing-coach Clinton Brown<br />

during the week shock North Hobart into action<br />

against Glenorchy at North Hobart Oval on Saturday?<br />

Will Clarence coach Brett Geappen’s comments from<br />

earlier this year that Lauderdale weren’t going to<br />

make the finals come back to haunt him?<br />

Today will be a great test for both sides. The<br />

Launceston FC are up and going in both grades.<br />

The burning question no doubt our supporters will<br />

be asking is have we made in-roads to last time<br />

we played them.<br />

Over the last month the club has been plagued<br />

with injuries with a total of 15 players missing<br />

from our ranks. This has really tested our depth<br />

with a lot of our U17 boys getting a taste of TSL<br />

football. On the positive side this has given some<br />

of our young Dockers a chance to play senior<br />

football which should really put them and the club<br />

in a good position for the future.<br />

Tonight the club is holding it players review. There<br />

has been a lot of talk around the club in regards<br />

to a few acts. All supporters are welcome and<br />

I think you will see another side of some of our<br />

players not to mention the girls in the kitchen. $5<br />

Congratulations to both teams on their resounding<br />

victories last week. It was great to see yet another<br />

Bowden debut for the Seniors. Tyler has a huge<br />

future with the club. The efforts of young stars Zac<br />

Webb and Luke Potter provide the Club with a great<br />

outlook for the future.<br />

Whilst we have been hit severely with injury the<br />

boys playing each week have been putting some<br />

very encouraging performances. We have a big<br />

month ahead of us and need to start it with a<br />

victory over North Hobart this week. Even though<br />

North have been down in recent weeks and have<br />

replaced their Coach we need to be very wary.<br />

Their players will have something to prove to their<br />

new Coach.<br />

On the social side of things the Black and White<br />

Ball last Saturday night was a great success. The<br />

band on the night was great providing some really<br />

good music. The roll up of in excess of 120 made<br />

the night a real success.<br />

Next week we meet Hobart at home so will be<br />

having a President’s luncheon. This one will be<br />

special with guest speaker being Tasmanian<br />

Another successful week for the Club last week<br />

It was great to see a large turnout at O’Keefe’s<br />

STATE OF AFFAIRS | Developing safer and healthier communities.<br />

AFL Tasmania supports the Good Sports Program<br />

Traditionally, alcohol and sport have been closely linked in Australia. Community-based sports clubs can<br />

play an important part in reducing alcohol problems by promoting safe drinking and providing appropriate<br />

role models for young people.<br />

What is the Good Sports program?<br />

A national initiative of the Australian Drug<br />

Foundation, the Good Sports program aims to<br />

develop safer and healthier communities.<br />

It is a free program that helps sporting clubs<br />

change their culture to become more focussed<br />

on young people and families, and less on the<br />

consumption of alcohol at high risk levels.<br />

Good Sports works to create sustainable change<br />

by enabling sporting clubs to change their systems<br />

and practices around the responsible serving of<br />

alcohol. The program has been developed to:<br />

• Reduce general alcohol consumption and risky<br />

drinking,<br />

• Reduce alcohol-related problems, particularly<br />

drink driving<br />

• Increase viability and influence within the<br />

community.<br />

Displaying the Good Sports logo sends an<br />

important message to club members and the<br />

community. It confirms that the club promotes a<br />

responsible attitude towards alcohol, providing a<br />

safe environment for players, members, families<br />

and supporters. This brings many benefits to<br />

the participating clubs and helps to build more<br />

connected, satisfied and resilient communities<br />

where violence, drink driving and road trauma is<br />

reduced. It also helps to improve the health and<br />

fitness of community members resulting in more<br />

viable and family focused sporting clubs.<br />

The Australian Drug Foundation is also launching<br />

the “Build your game program” a mental health<br />

intitiative, within sporting clubs.<br />

If your sporting club is one of a large number<br />

across Tasmania who has previously been involved,<br />

we encourage you to re-register your interest. Of<br />

course, new clubs are also welcome to register and<br />

AFL Tasmania is encouraging all footy clubs to show<br />

their support for this program and get involved.<br />

YOUNG GUNS | Round 3 NAB Under 18 National Championships<br />

Tasmania v NSW/ACT Under 18<br />

Tasmania played New South Wales/ACT at both Under<br />

18 and Under 16 level last weekend at Aurora Stadium.<br />

Impressive performances by John McKenzie and Ben<br />

Brown helped Tasmania record their first victory of the<br />

NAB U18 AFL Championships, defeating NSW/ACT by 18<br />

points at Aurora Stadium on Saturday.<br />

The victory was set up for the home team in the first<br />

three quarters as ruckman Ben Brown dominated all<br />

over the ground, accumulating 12 possessions and 12<br />

hit-outs before injuring his shoulder early in the third<br />

term to take no further part in the team’s 13.13 (91) to<br />

10.13 (73) victory.<br />

Midfielder John McKenzie elevated his NAB AFL Draft<br />

prospects with a scintillating first half, racking up 19 of<br />

his 25 disposals while Brody Mihocek was lively with 24<br />

possessions and 7 marks.<br />

Julian Dobosz was also influential in the victory with the<br />

forward kicking four goals from his 17 touches.<br />

NSW/ACT started well, kicking the first goal of the match<br />

but Tasmania hit back almost instantly as Ben Brown<br />

started to find plenty of the football while winning the<br />

centre bounce and clearances. Tasmania appeared to<br />

be harder at the football and went into the first change<br />

with a six-point lead.<br />

With the momentum behind them, Tasmania continued<br />

their high intensity game kicking the first three goals<br />

of the quarter as McKenzie continued to win the ball<br />

out of the midfield. The home team had an opportunity<br />

to go into the main break with a comfortable lead but<br />

squandered their chances, kicking six behinds and two<br />

out-of-bounds on the full for the term.<br />

Two goals to Tasmanian John McKenzie in the third<br />

quarter all but put the game out of reach for the RAMS<br />

as the home team piled on six goals to one to head into<br />

the last break with a 46-point lead.<br />

NSW/ACT came out determined to get their way back<br />

into the contest in the final quarter and despite getting<br />

to within two goals, Tasmania steadied to record their<br />

first win of the championships.<br />

Tasmania today plays the Northern Territory and will play<br />

Queensland on Thursday in their final game of the Under<br />

18 National Championships.<br />
