VIEW FROM HERE | Times have changed for Tasmanian football In recent weeks there has been significant publicity surrounding the opportunities for Tasmania in regard to AFL games being played here. To reflect back we know: 1. Former Premier of Tasmania, the late Jim Bacon, had made an election promise in the late 1990’s to bring eight games of AFL football to Tasmania, with all games to be played at North Hobart Oval. 2. Then former Prime Minister, John Howard, allocated $5M of Federal funding for developments at Bellerive Oval and $5M to develop York Park into Tasmania’s only AFL standard venue. 3. Then, Jim Bacon, with the strong support of the AFL’s new Football Operations Manager, Andrew Demetriou, encouraged Hawthorn to play one AFL game at York Park in 2001. At that time (2001), the Hawks were adamant they could not commit to playing any more than one game of AFL in Tasmania. In addition, the AFL, who control their fixture, where also adamant that they didn’t have the capacity within the AFL fixture to allocate more than one or two games each season. At that time our local football product in Tasmania was undoubtedly at its lowest point. The AFL was in the process of trying to rescue Tasmanian Football via recommendations contained in the “Biggs Report”, with the key recommendation being the establishment of Football Tasmania Limited (now AFL Tasmania). The first statewide league was essentially bankrupt and the competition was “dying a death of a thousand cuts”; the competition wound up before the 2001 season. To ensure our State had at least one quality football senior program, AFL Tasmania quickly pursued an option to field a team in Victoria’s State League competition in 2001. In addition, the Tasmanian Government of the day had no real interest in local football in Tasmania and AFL Tasmania was “miles away” from being credible in the eyes of the AFL. However, times have changed and we are now at a point whereby: 1. The AFL is considering fixturing up to 8 games of AFL football in Tasmania from 2012. 2. Tasmania has multiple AFL clubs that would like the opportunity to play games here and create a secondary market for their club. 3. The Tasmanian Government is investing heavily in both the AFL and local football, via AFL Tasmania. 4. The relationship and respect between the Tasmanian Government, the AFL and AFL Tasmania has never been better and we are working together to ensure every aspect of Australian Football in our State has the opportunity to grow and prosper. Our game in Tasmania is in a “good place” at the moment. If the cards fall the right way over the next year or two, local football (including the TSL), has a bright future!
