weekend’s game at Windsor Park.
We are entering the home straight in the
2010 Wrest Point State League roster
and 3 Clubs are now resigned to missing
the finals series.
The games to watch this week include:
Burnie Dockers who can stay in the race
with a win against the in-form Lauderdale;
Clarence keen to get back on the winners
list against North Hobart, and the match
of the round between Launceston and
Devonport to determine if the Blues will be
challenged for second spot on the ladder.
The RECORD’s reading highlights are the
View from Here and a detailed account
of Clarence’s Talent Identification
program in Grassroots. As well, the
Our Great Game article considers the
history of Tasmania’s oldest football club:
Launceston.
The once mighty Blues are enjoying their
most productive decade for seventy years
and are a genuine chance for honours
in this year’s premiership contest. Their
victory against Clarence has breathed
new life into the competition and has
seen them firm as the Roos most likely
challenger in September.
Have a great winter weekend at the footy.
VIEW FROM HERE | Times have changed for Tasmanian football
In recent weeks there has been significant
publicity surrounding the opportunities for
Tasmania in regard to AFL games being
played here.
To reflect back we know:
1. Former Premier of Tasmania, the late Jim Bacon,
had made an election promise in the late 1990’s
to bring eight games of AFL football to Tasmania,
with all games to be played at North Hobart Oval.
2. Then former Prime Minister, John Howard,
allocated $5M of Federal funding for
developments at Bellerive Oval and $5M to
develop York Park into Tasmania’s only AFL
standard venue.
3. Then, Jim Bacon, with the strong support of the
AFL’s new Football Operations Manager, Andrew
Demetriou, encouraged Hawthorn to play one
AFL game at York Park in 2001.
At that time (2001), the Hawks were adamant
they could not commit to playing any more than
one game of AFL in Tasmania. In addition,
the AFL, who control their fixture, where also
adamant that they didn’t have the capacity
within the AFL fixture to allocate more than one
or two games each season.
At that time our local football product in
Tasmania was undoubtedly at its lowest point.
The AFL was in the process of trying to rescue
Tasmanian Football via recommendations
contained in the “Biggs Report”, with the key
recommendation being the establishment of
Football Tasmania Limited (now AFL Tasmania).
The first statewide league was essentially
bankrupt and the competition was “dying a
death of a thousand cuts”; the competition
wound up before the 2001 season.
To ensure our State had at least one quality
football senior program, AFL Tasmania quickly
pursued an option to field a team in Victoria’s
State League competition in 2001. In addition,
the Tasmanian Government of the day had no
real interest in local football in Tasmania and
AFL Tasmania was “miles away” from being
credible in the eyes of the AFL.
However, times have changed and we are now at
a point whereby:
1. The AFL is considering fixturing up to 8 games of
AFL football in Tasmania from 2012.
2. Tasmania has multiple AFL clubs that would like
the opportunity to play games here and create a
secondary market for their club.
3. The Tasmanian Government is investing heavily
in both the AFL and local football, via AFL
Tasmania.
4. The relationship and respect between the
Tasmanian Government, the AFL and AFL
Tasmania has never been better and we
are working together to ensure every aspect
of Australian Football in our State has the
opportunity to grow and prosper.
Our game in Tasmania is in a “good place” at
the moment. If the cards fall the right way over
the next year or two, local football (including the
TSL), has a bright future!
General Manager
CFC NOTES PRESENTED BY ASSET TRAINING
- REGISTERED TRAINING ORGANISATION
Well the bubble burst and we had our first loss
against a determined and skilful Launceston
side. We now know that we must raise the bar
to reach that milestone in September.
The trip north overall was disappointing with
the U18s also losing, but on the positive side
our reserves recorded a strong win.
Our senior coach was in Melbourne during the
week of the bye and caught up with Brendon
Bolton at Box Hill/Hawthorn to investigate the
latest in coaching and training practices.
Our women’s team won their semi-final on 18
July and advanced to their grand final where
they play Launceston on 31July at North Hobart.
Since formation they remain undefeated
in 3 years and have won their past two
championships, so we wish them all the best.
This year the grand final sportsperson
breakfast is on the 18th of September at the
Shoreline Hotel – contact the club for details.
Don’t forget to check the club website for
information and details of sponsors who we
ask you to support.
CLUB NOTES | Round 16
Devonport Magpies - 03 6424 4542
President: Steve Daley
Senior Coach: Errol Bourne
DEVONPORT
Last week we hosted South Launceston and
they always put up a great fight against us.
We were determined that the game would be
under our control from the first bounce. After
the first quarter we skipped away to a very
good win at the end of the day.
Our U18s and reserves weren’t so lucky; even
though our reserves only had 16 on the ground
they only lost by 4 points – a fantastic effort.
Our U18s were kept goal less up to half time
and then started to gain a few but too little too
late and ended up losing comfortably.
Today’s game is a must win if we really want to
be there in September. Launceston are always
a hard team to beat and a travelling quite well
at the moment in second place on the ladder.
What a terrific day last Saturday for the Lauderdale
quite some time. Congratulations to all members
of the football department for this great result.
This week our senior and Under 18 teams travel to
Burnie, while our reserves have a bye. This road
trip presents us with a huge challenge, but one that
we are all looking forward to.
Last Saturday evening we held our annual Red
done to our organiser Kristi who with her band of
helpers did a fantastic job. During the night two
individuals were awarded life membership, we
will acknowledge these two legends in next weeks
Senior Coach: Paul Atkins
NORTH L’TON
What can we say about last week’s game!
After an extremely slow start and North facing
another loss, the boys picked up the tempo
considerable in the second half of the game to
run out winners by a narrow margin of 8 points.
Well done on a hard fought effort.
We take on South Launceston this week in
another must win game. If we continue with
the integrity that we finished off last week’s
game, it should prove to be a great contest.
Congratulations to Jessie Crichton who made
his senior debut with the Fremantle Dockers
last weekend. Jessie picked up several
possessions, and scored a goal. Unfortunately
they went down to the Bulldogs, but a goal in
your first AFL game is certainly something to be
proud of.
Annual Club Ball
SOUTH L’TON
This week we are back fresh after the split
round and looking to finish off on a positive
note for the last three games for the seniors.
But are keen to see our reserves and under
18 really push deep into the finals and gain
some success. We are up against our cross
town rivals, North Launceston, and hoping
to put in a great performance in all three
grades.
A reminder about cheap $7 player’s teas
good rate Friday night at Youngtown Oval.
OUR GREAT GAME | Mighty Blues were Tasmania’s first Club
Football in Launceston has its origins dating back
to the mid 1860s not many years after the official
birth of the game in Melbourne in 1858. The
formation of the Launceston FC occurred in 1875
making the Club the oldest in Tasmania’s history.
The Club was a founding member of the Northern
Tasmanian Football Association (NTFA) in 1886
and continued in that competition for a century.
The Blues enjoyed early success in Tasmania and
then dominated the State in the 1930s, winning 5
State Premierships.
In the period when the NTFA expanded from
1948 the Launceston Club found it more difficult
to achieve the same level of success. Highlights
were still found when the Club moved to Riverside
(Windsor Park) and with great premiership
triumphs in 1951, 1969, 1976 and 1985.
With the arrival of a state league in Tasmania in
the mid-1980s the Launceston Club was unable
to gain a license but continued in the NTFL. In
the early 1990s the Blues finally were accepted
into the then declining Statewide League, but
were unable to enjoy any success in 4 seasons.
The return to the NTFL in 1998 saw a long period
of development culminate with premierships in
2006, 2007 and 2008.
Launceston was accepted into the new
Tasmanian State League and was successful
in making the finals and winning the 2nds
premiership in 2009. The Club is continuing to
make great strides in 2010 as it attempts to lift its
first State title since 1938.
Senior Premierships: NTFA - 1888-89, 1892-93-
GRASS ROOTS | Roos developing future seniors
When the TSL commenced in 2009, AFL Tasmania
gave each of the 10 clubs the opportunity and
financial support to work with a development
zone. Two of the performance indicators for each
club were Talent Identification and Participation.
The Clarence Football Club with AFL Tasmania
agreed on a club development plan with Talent
Identification as a priority.
Our development zone includes Brighton, Lindisfarne
and Clarence junior football clubs. It is our aim that
the 50-60 players involved each year strive to be the
best they can be whether that be a state underage
representative, an AFL draftee, a quality regional
league player or to represent Clarence in the TSL for
many years to come.
The Clarence Football Club Talent Identification
Program was run over 6 weeks including 5 training
sessions, a family BBQ and also the two days of
games. The five training sessions were held with 2 at
Brighton and 2 at Kangaroo Bay with the final session
and family BBQ held at Bellerive.
Within the development squads we had a wide area
represented, with players coming from all outskirts of
our zone. We provided buses through the Bridgewater
PCYC for sessions out to Pontville and to bring the
Brighton boys over to the Eastern Shore.
Throughout the series we used a wide range of
resources including:
• We provided the players with quality coaches
- Cameron Thurley, Brennan Savage, Matthew
Geappen and Cameron Blight.
• Game Plan – A game plan handed to the players
detailing how the style of play – fast, high risk
football.
• Video Teaching.
• Statistical feedback at each break, provided by
our Development Officers: Sean Tisdale, Josh
Green and Aaron Tuxworth.
• Recovery Assistance and comprehensive Report
on progress.
To conclude our Talent Identification series we held
a function for all parents and players involved at our
home game against North Launceston. As part of
our development series tradition the players in the
Under 15 development side were presented their
jumpers to keep by the Clarence Senior playing
group. The RM Worbey CFC Academy for our best
14s, 15s and 16s players was also announced at
the function with the group of 25 players recognised
for their achievements in the development program
so far. RM Worbey Constructions has sponsored the
Academy Program for the last 2 years.
We see that the talented young players throughout
our zone will ensure that Clarence continues to
succeed at state level. It is important that we provide
these players with quality learning opportunities
and create an environment that they and also their
families will embrace.
YOUNG GUNS | Great Leap Forward
The Tasmanian State League (TSL) U18
competition in 2010 has been a great step
forward in standard from the regional U19
competition of 2009. The majority of boys
playing in this competition are committed
to improving their performance and have
ambitions of playing senior football with their
club or at a higher level.
The U18 competition is a great introduction
for talented young players coming out of youth
community football to get the feel for what being
involved at a senior club is all about. Playing
at a higher standard week in, week out against
sometimes older boys is a whole new challenge
to young players and as has been seen this
year a terrific way for players to show significant
improvement. This was one of the major reasons
the State U16 team enjoyed recent success at the
national championships as all U16 State Academy
players played at TSL U18 level or above this year.
Young players from every TSL club this year have
progressed from playing U18 to senior football
throughout the year. Some are given one or
two games for experience; others flourish once
they get their chance and hold their position in
the team for a longer period. What the better
standard of the U18 competition has done this
year is make it a bit easier for these boys to feel
comfortable at senior level more quickly. The
jump into senior football is a big challenge for
most players and it is vitally important with the
young lists most TSL clubs have that we have a
high standard youth competition underpinning the
senior competition.
Being a coach at TSL U18 level is a huge
responsibility and has equal amounts of
challenges and rewards. A winning culture is a
great culture to have and should be encouraged
but these coaches also have the responsibility to
develop players for the future and not just being
concerned with the day’s or year’s result. A key
component of a TSL U18 coach’s KPI’s should
be how many future senior footballers he can
develop for his club and establishing a team and
individual learning environment for his players to
thrive in.
Going forward into 2011 a “Colts” team made
up of a majority of U18 players will underpin a
club’s senior team. This will make it even more
important for TSL club’s to develop talented
young players through this team so they are
ready to step into senior football when they are
called upon.
THE WHISTLE BLOWER | Young umpires take first step at U16 Nats
This week we feature the 3 Tasmanian umpire
representatives at the recent U16 AFL National
Championships in Sydney.
Nic Saltmarsh is a Field Umpire who is 19 and
in his fifth year of umpiring. Nic started off as a
Boundary Umpire in 2006 and did two seasons in
the Northern Tasmanian Football League (NTFL)
before switching to field umpiring. Last year,
Nic was appointed to the Northern Tasmania v
South Australia U23 match in Adelaide which he
says is the highlight of his career so far. He also
officiated in last year’s Tasmanian U19 Grand
Final as well as the 2008 NTFL Grand Final. Over
summer, Nic umpired in the Northern Territory
Football League competition which he says was a
tremendous experience. He officiated in 9 Senior
matches including umpiring on the Tiwi Islands.
Nic lives in Ulverstone and is a 2nd year University
Student studying Education in Burnie. Nick says
his mother and father, as well as Phil McCulloch
who coached him last year, have been the biggest
influence on his career. He says his umpiring
ambition is to be as consistent as possible, do the
best he can and enjoy it.
Terry Shore is 22 and is a Boundary Umpire. Terry
is originally from Burnie but is presently living
in Hobart whilst he is studying at the University
of Tasmania. He is in his 4th year of studying a
Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Engineering
degree. Terry is in his fifth season of umpiring and
has quickly moved through the boundary umpire
ranks including being on the VFL panel in 2008.
He says his two best appointments have been last
year’s Tasmanian U19 Grand Final and the NTFL
U18 Grand Final in 2006.
Jason Nicholls resides in New Town and is
now in his third year of Goal Umpiring having
commenced in 2008. Jason, who is 27, has
already been very successful in his career with his
best appointments being: 2010 U16 AFL National
Championships; 2009 Southern Football League
(SFL) Reserves Grand Final; 2009 Tasmanian
U19 Grand Final. Jason says the most influential
person in his career has been Stuart Allen who
is a fellow Goal Umpire who introduced him to
umpiring. Jason’s umpiring ambition is to umpire
to the best of his ability for as long as possible
and to take any opportunities that present
themselves. Jason is a Hospitality Worker at
Wrest Point Casino. He also umpires Cricket and
Netball as well as coaching one of the Palena
Netball Club teams. Jason also plays Indoor
Cricket and Mixed Netball. When not involved
in sport, Jason enjoys going out with friends
whenever possible.
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Play by the Rules is for all of us
Part of the funding agreement between the
State Government and AFL Tasmania includes
key performance indicators related to clubs
and associations promoting a safe sporting
environment for members and spectators. This
includes increasing awareness among the
football community of the Play by the Rules
resource and incorporating Play by the Rules
education into coaching courses.
Play by the Rules has been integrated into AFL
Tasmania coach education courses throughout the
state for a number of years now and in conjunction
with Sport and Recreation Tasmania the roll out of
Play by the Rules to our TSL clubs and affiliates will
begin in the coming months.
Play by the Rules is an interactive online resource
that provides information and tools for community
sport and recreation on how to prevent and deal
with discrimination, harassment and child abuse
and how to develop inclusive and welcoming
environments for participation.
Sport and recreation clubs and associations can
use Play by the Rules to:
• Ensure coaches, administrators, officials
and umpires understand their roles and
responsibilities.
• Better understand sport and the law.
• Develop and review policies.
• Access brochures to be used as a way of
communicating messages about sport being
fun, fair and safe.
Visit www.playbytherules.net.au to discover how
Play by the Rules can assist your club to provide
and promote a safe sporting environment. For
