Welcome once again to the RECORD
for the Wrest Point State League finals
series for 2010. In this third edition we
update the Tassie Medal and have a
look at our young Tasmanians making a
mark in the AFL.
We’ve had the appetizer and now it
is entrée with Launceston returning
to Bellerive for another crack at the
Clarence juggernaut. The law of
averages suggests that the more often
the Blues travel south they will at some
point prevail. A win will provide first spot
in the Grand Final and the all important
home ground advantage.
In the 1st semi final North Hobart have
the hard task of defeating Devonport on
the Coast, but if form is a guide then the
Demons are every chance.
Finally the countdown to determine
the Wrest Point State League best and
fairest player has begun with the Top
30 named announced. Launceston
captain, Scott Stephens, could add
to his RACT Award, but has numerous
Blues in contention. The winner will be
announced live at the Wrest Point State
League Grand Final.
Have a great finals footy experience.
VIEW FROM HERE | New structure for football management
On Wednesday of this week the Chairman of
AFL Tasmania, Dominic Baker, announced
a new AFL Tasmania management team
structure, established to further develop the
sport in the state over the coming decade.
Speaking at the announcement, Dominic said
the changes would aid the implementation of the
organisation’s plan and business in the years ahead:
AFL Tasmania’s new management team
structure, which was approved by the Board
last week, reinforces our organisation’s focus
on the three core pillars of our business - State
League, Talent and Business Development.
The appointment of Shaun Young as General
Manager, State League, completes the
management structure that the Board has been
working towards over recent years. The first step
in this process occurred in late 2008 when Nick
Probert was appointed as the head of a new
Talent Department for AFL Tasmania. The next
step was the appointment in late 2009 of Trent
Bartlett to the role of Business Development
Manager. In early 2010 we then established
a new Business Operations Department, with
new staff joining this department, reporting
directly to Trent. The final part of the process
is now the establishment of a dedicated State
League Department at AFL Tasmania, under the
leadership of Shaun Young.
This new management structure will now enable
me to assume the role of Chief Executive of AFL
Tasmania, meaning my time and energy can be
dedicated towards matters of strategy and policy,
for all levels and aspects of our game and in all
areas of Tasmania.
It has been important for both Dominic
and I to play leading roles in managing the
implementation of our new Wrest Point State
League over the past two years, supported
operationally by three Regional Managers - Shaun
Young, Wayne Povey and Barry Gaby.
While the Board will most certainly continue to
oversee the development of our State League, the
time is now right for Dominic and me to delegate
the management responsibility of the Wrest Point
State League competition to Shaun Young and his
team, and to ensure all three business department
leaders compliment and support each other.
When the TSL was officially established in
December 2008, the Chairman and I consistently
stated that it would take AFL Tasmania at least
a decade to consolidate the TSL as a quality,
popular and respected State League competition.
The introduction of a dedicated State League
Department, under the leadership of Shaun
Young, is a significant step forward, and a further
demonstration of the Board’s commitment to
invest in securing a positive future for the TSL
competition and the member clubs.
WINNER | Scott Stephens
Launceston captain Scott Stephens has won
the prestigious RACT Insurance Player Of The
Year award, topping off a fine home and away
series for his Club and its supporters.
Stephens finished the season with 20 votes,
two clear of the runner-up, North Launceston’s
Zane Murphy, after the 18-round series and
adds his name to the honour board alongside
the inaugural RACT Player of the Year, Clarence’s
Jeromey Webberley. RACT Insurance CEO, Mr
Trent Sayers, announced the winner recently:
RACT Insurance became involved with the new AFL
Tasmania state league last year with the creation of
the Player of the Year award. As we see it, the statewide
league is not just another footy competition.
It’s a real community endeavour. As Tasmania’s
largest home-based insurance business, we saw
the importance of helping to nurture and support
a footy code that taps into almost every community
in the State. Towns and cities across Tasmania
supply players, administrators, umpires, coaches
and ground staff. That represents a community spirit
worth supporting.
The RACT Insurance Player of the Year was decided
from a weekly vote of Tasmanian print media
football correspondents. The winner receives a
seven days travel and accommodation package to
the Gold Coast, along with $2,500 cash.
Stephens started playing football for Launceston
in the under 12’s and has played 112 senior
games for Launceston. He was a member of the
2000 and 2001 Tassie Mariners and the 2001
National Championship winning side. He also
played with the Tassie Devils from 2002 – 2005
and 2007 and was also Co-Captain in 2007.
Stephens was the runner-up in the Darrell
Baldock medal in 2006, and the Examiner/
Advocate and Coast FM Player of the Year in
2006. He was a premiership player with the
Launceston Football Club in 2006, 2007 and
2008, and won the Best and Fairest in both
2006 and 2009.
His life is immersed in football. He has been
the Club Captain since 2008 and is currently
employed as the club’s General Manager. Scott
Stephens said:
It is a great thrill to win the 2010 media award
sponsored by RACT. They have put together a
fantastic package. I’m sure I will have a few
team-mates putting their hands out for a piece of
the cake though! I can also thank Budgie (Brett
Geappen). If he hadn’t of got injured I’m sure he
would have continued his early season form.
DEVONPORT
The Devonport Magpies played an excellent
brand of football beating Glenorchy under lights
at the Devonport Oval last Saturday night.
Congratulations are also extended to Leah
Woodberry for her excellent rendition of the
National Anthem prior to the start of the game.
Our large and ever-increasing band of
In 2010 a number of players have had the
opportunity to play Senior football, which can only
put them in good stead for the future. Our Senior
Coach, Ben Reid, also announced his retirement.
Ben has been involved with the club for 16 years
now and played 259 club games, becoming a
Player Life Member and was playing coach of our
(3) Reserves Premierships in 2006, 2007 and
2008. We thank Ben for his contribution to the
club; we wish the Reid family well and hope to see
you around the place in the future.
Today’s game is a great challenge for our
Reserves and we wish Matthew Shaw and his
team the very best for the rest of 2010
CLUB NOTES | Finals Week 3
Northern Bombers - 03 6334 2359
President: Thane Brady
Senior Coach: Paul Atkins
NORTH L’TON
Well, this season is now over for the senior
boys as they experienced a very disappointing
loss to North Hobart last Sunday. An excellent
start saw the Bombers with a lead of 42 points,
but this was quickly turned around and North
Hobart ran out winners by 8 points.
The Committee of Management would like
to thank Senior Coach Paul Atkins for the
tremendous work he has done this season.
Paul has earned the respect of all at the Club
for his hard work and his ability to have the
boys listen and take advice. The hardest role
a coach has is earning the team’s respect, and
Paul did this in his first couple of weeks in his
new role with the Club.
A big congratulations to the U18 team on their
fantastic win over Clarence last week. They
have a well deserved bye this weekend. Good
luck to all the boys and we are confident that a
grand final berth is imminent.
TASSIE MEDAL | Recognising Tasmania’s best and fairest player
Thirty players from the Wrest Point State League
are still in the running for the competition’s top
honour, the Tassie Medal.
The list of 30 players was released by AFL
Tasmania earlier this week and represents
the cream of the state’s footballers, including
2009 Tassie Medal winner, Devonport’s Kurt
Heazlewood.
Many of the top players from 2009 are still in
the running for the 2010 best and fairest award.
North Hobart’s Ken Hall and Burnie’s Darrren
Banham, who tied for fifth place last year, have
both had another stellar season to remain in
contention for the medal.
The 2009 fourth place getter, Zane Murphy, has
also polled well enough to make it into the top 30,
but as he was suspended during the season is
ineligible to win the Tassie Medal this season.
Nine of the ten clubs are represented in the top
30, with Launceston having the greatest number
with 7 players, including RACT Player of the Year,
Scott Stephens.
Across the next few weeks the list will be further
reduced, with the winner being announced at
the Wrest Point State League Grand Final. The
Record will update the list of 20 players next week
and highlight the top 10 in the Grand Final edition
of the Record.
2010 Tassie Medal - Top 30
• Burnie - Darren Banham, Luke
Shackleton, Matthew Stephenson.
• Clarence - Brett Geappen, Josh
Green, Brennan Savage, Trent
Standen, Cameron Thurley.
• Devonport - Kurt Heazlewood,
Brad McDonald, Vincent
Ponsonby, Ben Reynolds.
• Glenorchy - Jaye Bowden, Jake Cox,
Nathan Matthews.
• Hobart - Jeremy Howe
• Lauderdale - Marcus Fitze.
• Launceston - Tim Bristow, Will Campbell, Brian
Finch, Kurt McCabe, Sam O’Keefe, Gary Shipton,
Scott Stephens.
• North Hobart - Cam De Gooyer, Oliver Di Venuto,
Ken Hall.
• North Launceston - Andrew McLean, Zane Murphy,
Michael Praciak.
It was also confirmed this week that Launceston’s
Brian Finch has won the Hudson Medal, topping
the goal kicking across the home and away series.
Devonport’s Ben Reynolds has won the Lefroy
Medal as the best player for Tasmania in the
interstate competition. Their achievements will be
featured in next week’s Record.
our great game | Tasmanian State Football Premierships
Tasmanian football clubs have competed for a
‘State Premiership’ on and off for around 100
years. The governing leagues of Tasmanian
football inaugurated an official State
Premiership in 1909 when the Premier from
the southern based TFL, namely Cananore (of
Hobart), played against the northern based
NTFA premiership team, Launceston.
The State Premiership series became hugely
popular from 1928 up until a dispute between
the TFL and NTFA halted the series in 1951.
The year 1928 was significant because the City
Club (of Launceston) had recruited the high
profile Victorian Roy Cazaly to coach and he
duly delivered the first state title for a Northern
Tasmanian club in his first season.
The State Premiership series resumed in 1954
after the North-West Football Union (NWFU)
successfully gained equal status with the NTFA
and TFL. Subsequently, the State Premiership
became a contest between the Premiership
team from the 3 major Tasmanian regions. The
period 1954 to 1973 became the second golden
era of Tasmanian state football such was the
interest and success of the series of games that
was conducted to culminate each season and
determine the best team in Tasmania.
However, new cracks began to appear in 1974,
1977 and 1979 when the three leagues could
not agree on the timing of the finals series or
their commitment to the concept. Ultimately, the
prolonged decline of the series in the early 1980s
became a major catalyst for the formation of a
Statewide League in 1986-87.
The subsequent Tasmanian State League that
was conducted up until the end of 2000 was
very successful in attracting high quality players
and coaches to Tasmania. The State League
was very popular until a number of Clubs began
to fail financially and were unable to continue in
the competition.
Regional football resumed in 2001 across
Tasmania, but there was an inability to progress
a State Premiership series for 8 long years
despite constant speculation and a failed
attempt in 2008.
The State Premiership series has been disrupted
on numerous occasions due to world wars, the
influenza pandemic of 1919 and internecine
disputes in the early 1950s, on and off in the
1970s and 1980s and again in the last decade.
Historically there is a correlation between the
relative strength and interest in a Tasmanian
State Finals series or league and the strength
of Tasmanian football at representative level. In
this regard we can expect if the new Wrest Point
Tasmanian State League is able to gain traction
amongst football players, corporate and media
supporters and fans, that a new fourth era of
Tasmanian State football will dawn and this will
strengthen Tasmanian football.
This series of articles will provide a summary of all
Tasmanian State Premiership games and a table
of premiers and runners-up. As well, there is a
feature on the greatest State Premiership games
from the 4 major eras starting with the 1920s
and 1930s. A special ‘Fantasy Final’ series will
also been provided to fill in some gaps in the
history of Tasmanian State Football Premierships.
TROPHIES | Wrest Point Tasmania State League Premiership 2010
The Wrest Point Tasmania State League will
issue a range of traditional trophies for the best
teams, coaches, players and umpires in 2010.
These include:
FLAG - The traditional reward for the premier
team is the provision of a Flag or Pennant. The
presentation is made either on Grand Final day or
at the commencement of the new season when
the Flag is unfurled at the winning Club’s first
home game of the season.
CUP - There have been many Premiership Cups
presented to winning teams in competitions
across Tasmania. The VFL / AFL only commenced
presenting the now famous AFL Premiership
Cup in 1960, but in Tasmania a perpetual cup,
called the Bulldog Cup, was presented for the
Tasmanian State Premiership team from the very
early days of the competition. The whereabouts
of the Bulldog Cup is not known, but the
distinctive trophies presented to all teams who
participated in the first Tasmanian State League
are firmly entrenched in the respective winner’s
trophy cabinets. The Clarence FC won 5 state
premiership cups during their golden era from
1993 to 2000 and added to that in 2009 with the
inaugural Wrest Point Tasmania State League.
MEDALS - The issuing of medals to the players
participating in the Grand Final commenced in
the VFL / AFL in 1979, when the first Norm Smith
Medal for best on ground was issued to Carlton’s
Wayne Harmes. Up until 1982 medals were also
issued to the players of the runner-up team, but in
1981 Collingwood ruckman Peter Moore tossed
his medal into the crowd in disgust at receiving
his third successive runner up medal (Collingwood
lost in 1979, 1980 and 1981). The VFL / AFL
discontinued the practice of presenting runner
up medals at that time. This year a Premiership
Medal will be presented to the players and the
participating umpires will be recognized. The
best player on the ground will be awarded the
prestigious Darrel Baldock Medal.
GRASS ROOTS | Cadbury NTJFA Grand Finals 2010
The Cadbury Northern Tasmanian Junior
Football Association grand finals were played
at Aurora Stadium on Sunday 29 August in ideal
conditions. In a day of upsets the favourites
were defeated in the first four grand finals, but
this made for an exciting day of youth football.
The first game of the day, the under-12 final, was
played with an excellent attitude from both sides.
Despite a rally from the Prospect Sharks in the
closing stages of the game, North Launceston held
on to secure a 20-point win. The tone of the game
set the standard for the rest of the day. Best on
Ground: Connor Young – North Launceston.
In a nail-biting clash in the under-13 match, the
scores remained tight throughout the game. North
Launceston mounted an admirable challenge,
but Launceston remained strong and held the
Bombers off to record a five-point victory. Best on
Ground: Rhys Petterwood – Launceston.
It was a close contest from the start as the under-14
division as North Launceston faced off against
South Launceston, with the Bulldogs leading into
half-time with just a six-point buffer. After a strong
second half, South pushed the margin out to 19
points to win in a team effort. Best on Ground:
Timothy Jones – South Launceston.
The Prospect Sharks’ defensive line was a force
to be reckoned with in the under-15 final, leaving
South Launceston goal-less by the end of the
first quarter. Prospect seemed set for a stellar
finish to a dominant season until South came to
life after half-time, booting 4 goals in the third
quarter and forcing the favourites to surrender
their lead. Going into the last quarter with a
two-point advantage, the Bulldogs maintained
their newly-found form to run home by 36 points
in an emphatic and memorable victory. Best on
Ground: Dylan Visser – South Launceston.
In the big game of the day, played under lights,
the Launceston Blues and the South Launceston
Bulldogs fought it out for the under-16 shield.
Launceston developed a handy 30-point lead by
three-quarter time and despite South’s best efforts,
held on to win by 46 points at the final siren. Best
on Ground: Jacob Bonney – Launceston.
Under-12 – North Launceston 9.9 (63) def. Prospect
Sharks 7.1 (43).
Under-13 – Launceston 8.8 (56) def. North
Launceston 8.3 (51).
Under-14 – South Launceston 8.6 (54) def. North
Launceston 5.5 (35).
Under-15 – South Launceston 12.13 (85) def.
Prospect Sharks 7.7 (49).
Under-16 – Launceston 14.10 (94) def. South
Launceston 7.6 (48).
YOUNG GUNS | Tasmanians progressing in AFL
As another season draws to a close in
Tasmania, the focus for some hopeful young
players shifts towards the NAB National Draft
and the possibility of being selected by an AFL
club on November 18.
Over the next fortnight we will take a look at the
players who have been selected in recent drafts to
see how they are faring in the AFL and look ahead
to the prospects who will be nervously counting
down the days over the coming months.
Overall 2010 has been a good season for
Tasmanians attempting to forge a career in the
AFL. There are currently 30 Tasmanians on AFL
lists, up from 22 in 2007.
25 players have experienced senior AFL football,
with Bart McCulloch (Brisbane), Tom Allwright
(Geelong) and Daniel Archer (St.Kilda) still waiting
for their chance and Maverick Weller and Luke
Russell good chances to debut for the Gold Coast
in their clubs opening game in the AFL in 2011.
Marcus Davies - Carlton pick 43 in 2009
Marcus debuted for Carlton in round 19 against
Essendon, collecting 10 disposals and has held
his spot in the team so far, improving with each of
the 4 games he has played. Marcus has a terrific
opportunity to be play his first AFL final if selected
this weekend.
Ryan Harwood - Brisbane pick 47 in 2009
Ryan’s debut in round 17 against Geelong
at Skilled Stadium was a baptism of fire.
Relieving Brisbane’s number 1 midfielders from
interchange, Ryan went head to head on Gary
Ablett, Joel Selwood and Jimmy Bartel picking up
18 possessions and 4 tackles along the way.
Jesse Crichton - Fremantle pick 48 in 2009
Jesse debuted on the same weekend as his good
mate Ryan, collecting 13 possessions against the
Western Bulldogs. In his fifth game Jesse tagged
Cyril Rioli at Aurora Stadium and has narrowly
missed selection last week as the Dockers head
into their finals campaign.
Jeromey Webberley - Richmond pick 67 in 2009
Jeromey has been the most successful draftee of
the 2009 cohort, playing 10 games in 2010 after
debuting against Adelaide in Round 7.
Daniel Archer - St Kilda Rookie pick 36 in 2009
Daniel has progressed well with St Kilda who
are treating him as a longer term key position
prospect. Daniel has played the majority of the
year with VFL club Sandringham as both a key
forward and key defender.
Liam Jones - Western Bulldogs pick 32 in 2008
Liam has had an interesting career path to senior
AFL football, accepting a scholarship to attend
Scotch College before long term injury sidelined
him for the 2009 season. Liam debuted for
the Bulldogs in Round 18 and has a terrific
opportunity to play finals football at centre half
forward for the Bulldogs.
Already a senior TSL premiership winner as a 17 year old in
2009, Josh has again had a stellar season with Clarence in
2010, playing as a creative midfielder that has the ability to hurt
the opposition quickly with his possessions.
At National Under 18 level, Josh has also had an outstanding
season as the Captain of the Tasmanian Under 18 team
that won the Division 2 title of the NAB Under 18 National
Championships.
Josh’s outstanding performance at the five game carnival was
recognised with selection in the All-Australian Under 18 team,
OUR GREAT GAME | Tasmania’s State Premiership Coaches
Reid, Brown, Taylor, Bourn or for the double
Geappen. One of these coaches will join elite
company on Saturday 18 September when
they coach their team to the Wrest Point State
League premiership. Who will they join and
what does it mean? The list of great coaches is
long and brings back memories of great football
battles past.
Some of the names that stand out amongst 73
premiership coaches include:
• 24 Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame members
(marked *).
• Many champion VFL / AFL players who captain
– coached in Tasmania, epitomised by Jack
Beveridge the Collingwood star of the 1927 to
1930 era; Carlton colossus Fred Davies who
led Longford to their only triumph and more
recently the arrival of Sydney Swans team
mates, Mark Browning, Steve Wright and David
Rhys – Jones in the 1990s.
• Great coaches who helped their Tasmanian
clubs achieve their most memorable moments,
including Bob Wilson at Scottsdale, Rod Olsson
at sandy Bay and Ricky Graham at Ulverstone.
Leading Coaches
The leading Tasmanian state premiership
coaches almost exclusively achieved their records
in the period 1909 to 1951. The only exception
being the much maligned Clarence coach of
the 1990s, Grant Fagan. It is arguable that the
two regional format of the early years allowed
coaches to more readily achieve their results in
a short time frame. In the first Tasmanian State
League the gruelling nature of the competition
made long-term multiple premiership coaching
much more difficult. This makes Grant Fagan’s
and the other multiple premiership coaches of
that era achievement arguably more meritorious.
Similarly, when the State Premiership format
moved to 3 regions from 1954 to 1978 it also
became more difficult to achieve multiple
premierships. In this regard the achievement of
City / City-South coaching maestro, Bob Miller,
is significant. He first coached City to a state
premiership in 1954. Then 18 years later, in a
second coaching stint, he took the Redlegs to the
1972 pennant over Darrel Baldock’s Latrobe.
The Final Word
Tasmania’s Head Coach, Mathew Armstrong,
achieved the honour of coaching North Launceston
to their 1998 State Premiership without being
defeated. This was Armstrong’s first coaching
assignment and launched his coaching career
at AFL level with Brisbane Lions and then for the
Tasmanian Devils. Mathew Armstrong offered
some reflections for the Record and said it was one
of the ‘crowning moments’ in his football career.
“At the time it was a great achievement in a
reasonably strong competition to go through
undefeated.”
“As the years go on it means more and my respect
for the people involved has become greater.”
“Everyone becomes wiser and I realise that it is a
significant achievement to be a leader amongst
a group of young men, and many others in the
wings of the Club, all striving for and achieving the
one goal to such a high standard.”
Tasmanian Coaching Coups
Tasmanian football clubs have pulled off some
stunning recruitment coups over the course of a
century of football.
Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes
The diminutive Checker Hughes was a classy
player for Richmond in the period 1914 to 1923,
including the Tigers first premierships in 1921-
22. He started his senior coaching career at
Ulverstone and with the NWFU from 1924-26. His
success with the Robins saw him quickly snapped
back up by Richmond. His initial years as a
VFL coach saw him come up against a rampant
Collingwood combination for grand final losses
in 1928, 29 and 30. Another loss to Geelong
followed in 1931 before the breakthrough came
in 1932 with a premiership over Carlton. In 1933
Checker Hughes moved to Melbourne and scored
4 premierships in 1939, 40, 41 and 1948.
Cazaly, Collier and Warne-Smith
Arguably the three best players to ever come to
Tasmania to coach football were Australian Hall of
Fame members Roy Cazaly, Albert Collier and Ivor
Warne – Smith. Cazaly has been duly recognised
in Victoria and Tasmania for his contribution to
football. The Team of the Century coach took
first City (1928, 1930), North Hobart (1932)
and then New Town (1935, 1948, 1949 and
1951) to regional premierships. Collier won the
Brownlow in 1929 and played in a 4th successive
premiership with Collingwood in 1930. In 1931
Cananore secured his services and he promptly
won the league best and fairest award and took
the Canaries to the TFL and State Premiership.
Ivor Warne – Smith had a massive impact on
North-west Coast football for 4 years leading both
Latrobe and the NWFU to some of their finest
moments. Upon his return to Melbourne Warne
– Smith became the first dual Brownlow Medal
winner in 1926 and 1928.
Geelong’s 1963 Premiership Team
Tasmania became a favoured destination for
Geelong’s 1963 premiership team who were
seeking to take up coaching careers. No
less than 5 of their champions and an expat
Tasmanian who was at Geelong in 1963
embarked on successful coaching careers in the
Apple Isle. John Devine: led North Hobart to the
1967, 69 and 74 TFL premierships. Paul Vinar:
took over Longford for 5 seasons. Captain Fred
Wooller: set the township of Penguin alight but
couldn’t deliver the ultimate prize from 1965
to 1968. John Watts: took over the reins at
Hobart from 1966 to 1968. Brownlow Medallist
centreman Alistair Lord: sort a clearance to
Burnie in 1965 but was knocked back by the Cats
and eventually was dissuaded from the move.
Also, ex-pat Tasmanian Brian Lowe, who missed
the Geelong premiership through injury, returned
to Tasmania in 1964 to continue a stunning run
of premiership success with first Cooee and then
East Launceston through until 1971.
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Volunteer service recognised
Glenorchy Football Club’s Barry Hassett has
been named the inaugural Wrest Point State
League Volunteer of the Year. Hassett has had
a 43-year association with his favourite club and
was presented with his certificate and dinner
voucher and wine from Ristorante Da Angelo.
Glenorchy Football Club describe Barry as a real
stalwart of the club, as a board member and
sub-committee member. His club says that he
does an unbelievable amount of work for them,
seven days a week. He’s at the club from 7.30
most mornings and eliminates a lot of work in the
football department. Barry is a life member of the
club and the club believes that he is a wonderful
role model and a totally deserving recipient of this
prestigious award.
Volunteers are vital to the success of football in
Tasmania and are an integral part of the make-up
of clubs and their culture. Certainly, the staff and
management at AFL Tasmania appreciate the
efforts of volunteers and the passion they have
for their own clubs and football. We hope that this
award will highlight each club’s appreciation of
the people behind the success of clubs, and what
they bring to each community.
Acknowledgement to the other nominees for
their hard work and dedication to their clubs as
recognised within the nomination forms submitted.
