STATE OF AFFAIRS | Behind the RACT Insurance Player of the Year
RACT Insurance became involved with the Wrest Point State League in 2009 with the creation
of the RACT Insurance Player of the Year Award.
As Tasmania’s largest home-based insurance
business, RACT Insurance saw the importance of
helping to nurture and support a footy code that
taps into almost every community in the state. The
Wrest Point State League is not just another footy
competition; it’s a real community endeavour.
Towns and cities across Tasmania supply players,
administrators, umpires, coaches and ground
staff and that represents a community spirit worth
supporting.
The inaugural RACT Insurance Player of the Year was
Jeromey Webberley (Clarence – now at Richmond)
and in 2010 Scott Stephens (Launceston) won the
award. We’re now watching this year’s count with
mounting interest.
How does it work? The RACT Insurance Player of the
Year is decided from a weekly vote of Tasmanian
print media football correspondents. The top vote
getters are announced each week on Radio Sport
National’s Sunday Footy Show and published in
the Footy Record and in the Mercury, Examiner and
Advocate newspapers on Tuesdays. The winner
will receive a seven day travel and accommodation
package along with $2,500 cash. The total package
is worth $5,000.
RACT Insurance has a long tradition of supporting
Tasmanian community building activities, and
there is probably nothing that engages Tasmanian
communities more than football. But RACT Insurance
also support other community sectors. For instance
RACT Insurance has gone in to bat for people who
suffer acquired brain injuries, and another big project
for in 2010 is the fourth Tasmanian Youth Portraiture
Prize which aims to encourage young Tasmanian
artists in much the same way as the Player of the
Year is aimed at encouraging young footy talent.
Have you joined the RACT footy tipping
competition yet? Even though the season is well
underway, there is still time, with prizes to win each
week. There are two great leagues to choose from:
Wrest Point State League or the AFL. Enter one or
enter both! It’s free to join and you’ll have a chance to
win a share in prizes worth $14,500!
The weekly prize is $250 (or $125 for non-members)
and the weekly winner of the RACT Footy Tipping for
the Wrest Point State League will also take home a
KB Sherrin footy thanks
to Radio Sport National!
The season winner will win
$2,000 cash ($1,000 for
non-members) to spend
however they wish!
