From the editor
The first Super Round of the 2011 Wrest
Point State League is upon us with every
game this weekend a chance to go
either way.
The clashes between Clarence and
Launceston and North Launceston
and Glenorchy are more than likely to
preview four September combatants.
Both clashes can be expected to attract
plenty of fan support as well. At the
other end of the table the Bulldogs,
Tigers and Devonport Magpies are
all given a good opportunity to win
their first 4 points of the season. The
Dockers and Demons also meet and
the winner will go to 3 wins and give
themselves a handy break on the pack
of Clubs chasing a birth in the top 6.
The RECORD’s reading highlight is the
‘View From Here’ which analyses this
week’s games which are pivotal to the
fortunes of all Clubs. Also, the Guest
Tipsters will be hard pressed to predict
all winners this weekend. Finally, ‘Our
Great Game’ looks at AFL Tasmania’s
review of football below the Wrest Point
State League.
Have a great weekend at the footy.
VIEW FROM HERE | Throwing out the Challenges
Does the first 3 rounds of the State League tell us anything about the season ahead?
There seems to be a pattern emerging even at
this early stage with the clubs that were touted as
genuine finals contenders stamping their mark on
the competition.
Launceston and Glenorchy have come out of the
blocks firing on all cylinders with the respective
teams winning their first 3 games and only
percentage separating them at the top of the ladder.
Does Glenorchy’s win over last year’s premiers
Clarence in the season launch game insinuate that
Clarence’s reign at the top maybe under threat? It
would be a brave person to suggest that Clarence
won’t be around the mark again even after its initial
set back.
While Launceston have grabbed the 4 points over
North Hobart and North Launceston where many
football pundits had both teams the Demons and
Bombers going deep into September and even
some suggesting that North Hobart would lift the
premiership cup in 2011.
Both clubs have sent strong messages to the rest
of the competition and it will be interesting to watch
the Magpies and the Blues go head to head as the
season unfolds to see if one team can grab the
ascendancy throughout the home and away season.
As well, are North Launceston, Clarence, Burnie,
North Hobart and Lauderdale the teams that will be
vying for the remaining three positions in the final
five come September if Launceston and Glenorchy
continue on their way at the top of the ladder?
Early performances from some of these contenders
suggests that the conundrum will be can they rise to
the occasion when competing against clubs who may
be positioned above them as it appears that when
they are competing against teams ranked lower on
the ladder they have the capability of getting over
the line.
Where to from here for the three clubs positioned on
the bottom of the ladder?
Obviously Devonport are in a rebuilding phase due
to the circumstances the club went through in the
height of pre season and may endure a difficult
season in the competition and have a relatively
inexperienced list that should benefit over the course
of this season and develop immensely for 2012.
Hobart and South Launceston have proven on
occasions already that on their day they can be very
competitive, the question is can they be competitive
for a sustained period of time during the season and
cause some upsets along the way?
The next four to six weeks of the competition will
undoubtedly start to indicate where all clubs are
situated for season 2011, it will be interesting follow
the progress and to review after this period of time.
OUR GREAT GAME | Review of Football below the TSL 2010
The review report of Tasmanian football below the Tasmanian State League (TSL) is an
attempt by AFL Tasmania to provide leadership and direction in an endeavour to ‘grow our
game for our community!’
Three years ago AFL Tasmania presented and
implemented a plan for Tasmanian football, i.e. the
establishment of a new State League competition and
the withdrawal of the Tasmanian Devils from the VFL
competition.
AFL Tasmania’s original plan to establish a new State
League competition offered the Northern Tasmanian
Football League (NTFL), Northern Tasmanian Football
Association (NTFA), and the Southern Football League
(SFL) the rights to control team licences. However, this
option was quickly rejected by all three competitions.
Therefore, AFL Tasmania had to find another way of
achieving its desired outcomes. By December 2008
AFL Tasmania had secured 12 clubs that wanted to join
the TSL in their own right. Eventually AFL Tasmania
signed 10 individual TSL licences with clubs under AFL
Tasmania’s independent competition governance model.
The establishment of the TSL caused some unrest
in the NTFL and SFL in particular and certainly the
relationship between AFL Tasmania and regional football
was strained during 2008 and early 2009. However, as
often seen in football people and clubs move on quickly
and as we commence the 2011 football season the
relationship between AFL Tasmania and the leaders of
the NTFL, NTFA and SFL has become remarkably strong.
Over the past twelve months AFL Tasmania has been
communicating with the leadership of the three
main regional football competitions and with a broad
range of other community football stakeholders. This
consultation has led to AFL Tasmania determining that
the time is right for a plan that encompasses every
aspect of Tasmanian football.
The eight (8) core recommendations
1 - The implementation of a new management structure for
Tasmanian football below the TSL, i.e. the Tasmanian
Football Council (TFC) becoming a partner of AFL Tasmania.
2 - AFL Tasmania to fund and jointly appoint three full time
Regional Managers:
• Regional Manager, North-West / NTFL
• Regional Manager, North / NTFA
• Regional Manager, South / SFL
3 - All three regions to cater for open-age / senior clubs that
wish to field teams in a:
• Three team per club competition (i.e. seniors, reserves,
under 19s/18s); or a
• Two team per club competition (i.e. seniors and reserves
or underage); or a
• One team per club competition (i.e. seniors only)
4 - Obvious growth opportunities to be pursued in the following
districts:
• Kingston / Channel / Huon in Southern Tasmania
• Bridgewater / Gagebrook / Old Beach in Southern
Tasmania
• Eastern suburbs of Launceston via the ‘new’ East
Launceston Junior Football Club
5 - AFL Tasmania to collaboratively develop and implement a
Female Football Development Plan for Tasmania.
6 - AFL Tasmania in collaboration with AFL Masters Tasmania
and the TFC to develop and implement initiatives to ensure
football competitions for veterans prosper, while not placing
current open-age / senior football competitions at risk.
7 - AFL Tasmania in collaboration with the TFC and assisted
by Sport & Recreation Tasmania to develop and implement
initiatives designed to attract and retain umpires.
8 - AFL Tasmania in collaboration with the TFC and assisted
by Sport & Recreation Tasmania to develop and implement
initiatives designed to encourage clubs to invest in the
education of their key people / volunteers.
OUR GREAT GAME | Review of Football below the TSL 2010
Critical to Success
For these core recommendations to be relevant and
realistic the following need to be addressed:
• The NTFL, NTFA and SFL need to commit to
becoming legitimate regional football leaders;
their roles need to become far broader than just
competition management and administration.
The leagues need to be fully committed to
regional game development.
• As the AFL’s Tasmanian affiliates the NTFL,
NTFA and SFL will be encouraged, guided and
supported by AFL Tasmania to become regional
football leaders. This will require a financial
investment in football below the TSL, but not at
the expense of the TSL.
• AFL Tasmania will need to secure a new and
sustainable revenue stream for Tasmanian
football.
• If the NTFL, NTFA and SFL do not wish to
undertake a legitimate regional football
leadership role then their position as members of
AFL Tasmania will need to be reconsidered.
It has taken over a decade for AFL Tasmania, the
NTFL, NTFA and SFL to get to this point, i.e. where
state and regional football leaders can become
‘genuine partners’.
AFL Tasmania believes if the core recommendations
contained in this report are effectively developed
and implemented, Tasmanian football can look
forward to a future of cooperation and respect
amongst its leadership.
AFL Tasmania hopes this report will be the catalyst
for positive cultural change in Tasmanian football
administration – it won’t happen overnight but with
commitment and investment it can happen!
Tiers of Tasmanian Football
The levels of Australian football throughout the
nation, including Tasmania, are as demonstrated by
the pyramid below:
Tasmania has a plan for the top level of football, i.e.
the AFL national competition. The plan, led by the
Tasmanian Government, is that our State is ready
to support an AFL team of its own - whenever the
AFL is ready to consider Tasmania as a legitimate
market. A Tasmanian based AFL team proposal
has been presented to the AFL under the banner of
‘We’re ready whenever you’re ready’.
In 2009 AFL Tasmania also implemented a new
long term plan for State League level football
(Tier 2), i.e. the establishment of the new TSL
competition. However, no strategic or future
directions plan exists for the Tier 3 and Tier 4 levels
of competition in Tasmania.
As the governing and controlling body for
Australian football in this state, AFL Tasmania has
a responsibility to ensure that the foundations
of our game (junior and youth) and the range of
community/country/social clubs and competitions
are also provided with the opportunity to survive,
and more importantly, grow and prosper.
THE WEEK THAT WAS | Review of last weeks games
LAUNCESTON smacked cross town rival North Launceston back into place with utter contempt
at Windsor Park in round three.
The Northern Bombers were mounting a case as a
contender with two big wins in the first two rounds,
but in its first serious test were found to be seriously
wanting against the Blues. Launceston’s Brian Finch
added another seven goal haul in the mauling to move
to 21 from three games and well clear as the league’s
leading goal-kicker. The Northern Bombers led by
a point at the first change, but the Blues then took
complete control. The slaughter was not limited to the
second term, with the Blues dominating the second
half in the one-sided game billed as the match of the
round. While Finch led all scorers, he had a willing
sidekick in Sonny Whiting who chimed in with six
majors, while Josef Boyce dominated play.
Both Hobart and North Hobart took to the TCA Ground
severely depleted by injuries and suspensions – both
internal and from the tribunal – making the game a
lottery. But it was the Tigers who grabbed the initiative
in the first half, only to hand it back in the second in a
see-sawing, entertaining game. Hobart had a 34-point
lead at the long break, after outrunning and out
tackling the Demons. But the half time stop brought
a slumber to the Tigers and they were made to pay as
North Hobart slammed on seven goals to two in the
third term. The last term was a thriller, but the visitors
lifted when required to win by seven points. Demons
Ken Hall and Nathan Street were instrumental in the
fight back, while Aaron Hall kicked five goals in a solo
effort up forward for the Tigers.
Burnie did what it had to do against Devonport,
handing its coastal rival a 67-point lesson at West
Park. The 11-goal loss was the young Magpies
smallest losing margin of the season to underline
just how far last year’s TSL grand finalist are off the
pace this season. Brayden Hayes kicked six goals for
the Dockers, while Burnie’s Zac Hislop – brother of
Richmond rookie Tom – was best afield.
Lauderdale registered its first win of the season in an
impressive 50-point victory over South Launceston
at Youngtown Oval. The southern Bombers jumped
out with a six goal opening term and were never
headed. Making his TSL senior debut, 17-year-old
forward Ryan Wiggins kicked four goals for the victors,
including slotting one with this first kick in the big
time. Sean Mackay led an impressive Lauderdale
backline that conceded five goals for the game. It was
a disappointing performance by the Bulldogs.
Clarence’s Foxtel Cup foray lasted just the opening
round as the dual TSL reigning premier was handed
a 71-point spanking by WAFL power Claremont.
Unbeaten this year in Western Australia, the Tigers
won every quarter and dominated the longer the
game went. The Roos were valiant and more than
competitive at times, but were worn down by the
bigger, stronger bodies and the sheer class of the
visitors.
BURNING QUESTIONS:
Can Clarence bounce back from its Foxtel thumping
in time to take on red-hot Launceston in the mouthwatering
clash at Bellerive?
After failing miserably in its first test, will North
Launceston shake its pretender title when it hosts
unbeaten Glenorchy at Aurora?
Over the Easter break the Burnie Dockers U/17
team were treated to a fantastic opportunity
when they where guest of the Fremantle
Dockers. This year 22 boys and 7 staff were
given the opportunity to have a close up view of
all the workings of an AFL Club.
Over the five days the players toured the
Fremantle facility, had a training and
rehabilitation session conducted by 6 players,
had a question and answer session which
gave the boys an insight of what is required
to be an AFL player and the best of all they
played the curtain raiser game against North
Ryde Dockers on ANZAC day when Fremantle
played the Western Bulldogs. We won by 124
points also.
With the partnership agreement with the
Fremantle Dockers going from strength to
strength every year the club is looking forward
to rolling out some new initiatives in our Zone
over the coming months. Special thanks to
Shannon Wolarczuk who has worked tirelessly
pulling the trip together.
One Week at a Time...
With the Colts having a week off, the senior
side turned its attention to the Foxtel Cup
Champions League and Western Australian
side Claremont.
We were in the contest until just after
half time and after that the momentum
swung Claremont’s way and they kicked 9
unanswered goals to win by 72 points.
The Foxtel Cup is a great initiative and we fully
support the concept. However to be equitable
the minor states should play in a second
division. As a minor state we can not compete
evenly against states with a $300K plus salary
cap, huge populations, access to current /
former AFL listed players and facilities we all
dream of. To compare our TSL to the major
states is unrealistic in our view and all we can
do is learn from the opportunity.
Special Mention Segment
Mick Hollaway is a great volunteer. He is
responsible for hot food being ready for players
and supporters after training Thursday nights
and on Saturdays, he does time keeping for
both games. Mick’s service to the club is
invaluable and we would like to thank him for
The result from the Good Friday Clash against
coastal Rival Burnie may not have looked
promising, but for the fans that made the
trip to Burnie they witnessed a really spirited
performance. The windy conditions made it
very challenging for many players, but Justin
Rodman and Alan Clements were still able to
put in strong performances.
A real disappointment from the day was from
young Tassie Mariners Liam Williams who
broke his arm in both the radius and ulna. He
is a big loss to the side and we wish to see him
playing again in the near future.
An evening with Mark Maclure
19th May – Former Carlton Captain Mark
Maclure will be our guest in the Clubrooms
He made his senior VFL debut midway through
the 1974 season against Geelong. He stayed
with the Blues for an impressive thirteen
seasons during which he played 243 games
and kicked 327 goals.
Some of this greatest career achievements
included representing Victoria, and heading
Carlton’s goal kicking list twice. He was also
Carlton’s premiership centre half forward in
their premiership teams of 1979, 1981 and
1982. He portrayed a sometimes fearsome
physical presence towards opponents but was
ferociously protective of smaller team mates in
the forward lines.
Maclure was nameD the Blues captain for
the season of 1986 season but it was not a
successful year for him as he was troubled by
injuries. The recovered enough to take the
Blues into a finals campaign but it proved not
to be successful as they lost to Hawthorn in
the Grand Final that year. He retired shortly
afterwards.
These days, Mark works as an expert football
commentator for ABC radio, a panellist on
AFL 360 and is also the General Manager of
Valvoline Car Care.
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Behind the RACT Insurance Player of the Year
RACT Insurance became involved with the Wrest Point State League in 2009 with the creation
of the RACT Insurance Player of the Year Award.
As Tasmania’s largest home-based insurance
business, RACT Insurance saw the importance of
helping to nurture and support a footy code that
taps into almost every community in the state. The
Wrest Point State League is not just another footy
competition; it’s a real community endeavour.
Towns and cities across Tasmania supply players,
administrators, umpires, coaches and ground
staff and that represents a community spirit worth
supporting.
The inaugural RACT Insurance Player of the Year was
Jeromey Webberley (Clarence – now at Richmond)
and in 2010 Scott Stephens (Launceston) won the
award. We’re now watching this year’s count with
mounting interest.
How does it work? The RACT Insurance Player of the
Year is decided from a weekly vote of Tasmanian
print media football correspondents. The top vote
getters are announced each week on Radio Sport
National’s Sunday Footy Show and published in
the Footy Record and in the Mercury, Examiner and
Advocate newspapers on Tuesdays. The winner
will receive a seven day travel and accommodation
package along with $2,500 cash. The total package
is worth $5,000.
RACT Insurance has a long tradition of supporting
Tasmanian community building activities, and
there is probably nothing that engages Tasmanian
communities more than football. But RACT Insurance
also support other community sectors. For instance
RACT Insurance has gone in to bat for people who
suffer acquired brain injuries, and another big project
for in 2010 is the fourth Tasmanian Youth Portraiture
Prize which aims to encourage young Tasmanian
artists in much the same way as the Player of the
Year is aimed at encouraging young footy talent.
Have you joined the RACT footy tipping
competition yet? Even though the season is well
underway, there is still time, with prizes to win each
week. There are two great leagues to choose from:
Wrest Point State League or the AFL. Enter one or
enter both! It’s free to join and you’ll have a chance to
win a share in prizes worth $14,500!
The weekly prize is $250 (or $125 for non-members)
and the weekly winner of the RACT Footy Tipping for
the Wrest Point State League will also take home a
KB Sherrin footy thanks
to Radio Sport National!
The season winner will win
$2,000 cash ($1,000 for
non-members) to spend
however they wish!
YOUNG GUNS | TSL Development Series Kicks Off
The TSL Development Series is on again with the series held over the Easter holiday period.
The TSL Development Series is the first step in the
Tasmanian Talent Pathway, but more importantly
it provides clubs with their first opportunity to
identify and engage with the next generation of
young players and their families that reside in their
development zones.
The Development Series exists for two years in
the U14 and U15 age groups and culminates in
Southern and Northern representative teams that
are selected to play for the Intrastate Cup in the
September holidays.
Talent Pathway (U14 and 15) Timeline
• All Season Junior Club Football
• Easter TSL Development Series
• June Blue v Gold Representative Game
• September Intrastate Cup (South v North)
Blue v Gold Representative Games
At the Blue v Gold representative games in the June
school holidays two teams of 25 players selected from
the TSL Club Development Series from the southern
region will play against each other. In the northern
region a northern team of 25 players will play a northwest
team of 25 players. These teams will be selected
by the State Academy Coaches with assistance from
TSL Club Development Officers. The purpose of the
games is to provide another high quality match for
boys to learn in and also to assist in the selection
process for the Intrastate Cup.
Intrastate Cup (South v North)
The Development Series culminates in a North v
South Intrastate Cup for both U14 and U15 age
groups during the September school holidays. These
teams will be selected by the State Academy Coaches
with assistance from TSL Club Development Officers.
Selection will be based on the performances of
players during the TSL Development Series and the
Blue v Gold Representative Games. Talented players
who may have been unable to participate during the
Series will also be monitored during the year and may
be considered for inclusion.
U16 and U18 State Academy
Selected U14 players from the Development Series
will be invited to participate in a 4 week introductory
program in March of the following year. Selected
U15 players will be invited to participate in a 2 day
camp that will provide education about the State
Academy and they may subsequently be considered
for inclusion in the State Academy.
