THIS WEEK’S COVER
Tasmanian football
Icon, Horrie Gorringe,
has been nominated
by AFL Tasmania for
recognition in the
Australian Football Hall
of Fame.
From the editor
This week’s RECORD commences
the annual celebration of Tasmania’s
contribution to Australian Football by
featuring the progress of our nominations
to the Australian Football Hall of Fame
(AFHOF), and which will announce new
inductees on 8 June.
The Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame has
also ensured that Tasmania’s champions
are considered for recognition amongst the
all time greats of the game in the AFHOF.
Commencing in 2005 various nominations
have been prepared for consideration by
the selection committee.
AFL Tasmania has taken the view that
the AFHOF should recognize football in
Tasmania during the earlier eras up to the
formation of the national competition. Our
lobbying has seen some change in this
regard. Firstly, Stuart Spencer (inducted
2005) and then Darrel Baldock (elevated
to Legend in 2006) have had their
Tasmanian records taken into account.
In 2006 the bold step was taken to
nominate the Tasmanian football Icon,
Horrie Gorringe. The Little Maestro
played his whole career in Tasmania
but was renowned throughout Australia
for his football prowess. We feature
Horrie Gorringe’s detailed citation in this
week’s ‘Our Great Game’. It is indeed an
impressive contribution to the game.
Have a great weekend at the footy.
VIEW FROM HERE | List Management is the key to success
Last week I posed the question as to whether round
7 would serve up any upsets in the Wrest Point State
League; the results were as follows:
• Burnie defeated Hobart by 75 points
• Launceston defeated Lauderdale by 25 points
• North Launceston defeated North Hobart by 14 points
• Glenorchy defeated Devonport by 185 points
• Clarence defeated South Launceston by 175 points
The most disappointing thing about the results is the
huge winning margins by Glenorchy and Clarence.
When AFL Tasmania embarked on the rebirth of the
State League back in 2009 one of the main guiding
principles was to have an even and competitive League.
The competition is certainly achieving this on most
occasions, but unfortunately when the teams at
the middle to pointy end of the ladder play the
bottom teams there is quite a significant disparity
between them and which is not uncommon for
most competitions. However, the challenge for the
clubs sitting at the lower end is to build their football
product and capacity so that these types of results
are a rarity.
This week AFL Tasmania’s State League department
met with the State League Club Managers and one
of the discussion topics was list management. AFL
Tasmania believes that if all TSL clubs become
highly proficient in list management and adopt the
philosophies then the competition will be even and
competitive into the future.
Football list management philosophies are
underpinned by the following key questions:
• Who are the best 22?
• What are the DOB’s of these players?
• Who has the potential to play 100 games of senior
TSL football?
• What is the direction of our team and what players
will be needed to fit that direction?
• What will our senior team look like in three years
from now?
• Where are the gaps for recruitment?
Rather than the old philosophy of “the more players
the better”, clubs will need to become more strategic
and consider:
• What types of players do we really need?
• What players do we currently have on our list that
can be developed to match these needs?
• What talent is emerging from our Colts and our
feeder clubs?
The Wrest Point State League Senior List is in place
to assist clubs to more efficiently manage their
playing group in light of these changes, and the
Under 18 List is to assist clubs to focus more on
talent identification and then the recruitment and
development of the best young players in their zones.
There is no doubt that there are significant
challenges and changes ahead in this area for the
Clubs of the Wrest Point State League.
EDITOR’S NOTE: After searching the Wrest Point State
League’s record books it can be confirmed that the
margin in the Glenorchy v Devonport game was a record
for the 3 year old competition. The big margins are:
• 2011 – Round 7: Glenorchy 32.19 (211) df.
Devonport 4.2 (26) – 185 points
• 2011 – Round 7: Clarence 33.19 (217) df. South
Launceston 6.6 (42) - 175 points
• 2011 – Round 1: Launceston 30.20 (200) df.
Devonport 6.4 (40) – 160 points
• The highest margin in 2010 was Clarence over
Lauderdale by 95 points in Round 5.
• The highest margin in 2009 was Burnie over Hobart
by 118 points in Round 9.
Darren continues to be one of the most dangerous forwards in the
to compete at ground level. Darren’s extraverted approach to footy
endears him to the crowds and he has emerged as a strong leader
OUR GREAT GAME | Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame – A guide for national consideration
AFL Tasmania is proud of the achievement of Tasmanians and the contribution of
Tasmanian football to the national standing of Australian Football in the hearts and minds
of the ‘football family’ and the community more broadly.
Since the formation of the Tasmanian Football Hall
of Fame in 2005 there has been a concerted effort
to nominate Tasmanians, or those who have played
in Tasmania, to the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
Up until recently the Australian Football Hall
of Fame has only recognised football played in
Victoria, South Australia and West Australia as
worthy of consideration or when recognising
inductees in their citations.
Subsequently, AFL Tasmania has lobbied to ‘set
the record straight’ and ensure the historical
contribution of Tasmanian football is not
forgotten in the current national football era.
This has been successful with Stuart Spencer
(inducted 2005) and Darrel Baldock (elevated to
Legend in 2006) having their Tasmanian records
taken into account.
We have also submitted that all existing and
future members of the Australian Football Hall of
Fame should have their Tasmanian senior football
records acknowledged in their citation for the
Hall of Fame. We have asked that the records
of the following be amended to reflect their
achievements in Tasmania:
• Roy Cazaly, Albert Collier, Ivor Warne-Smith,
Laurie Nash, Arthur Olliver, Ian Stewart, Peter
Hudson, Peter McKenna, Frank Hughes, Haydn
Bunton Jnr and Jack McMurray Jnr.
Finally, we have taken the bold step to nominate
all Tasmanian football ‘Icons’ as inductees into the
Australian Football Hall of Fame. Of course Peter
Hudson, Darrel Baldock, Royce Hart, Ian Stewart
and Roy Cazaly are already inductees. However,
Horrie Gorringe, Arthur Hodgson, Terry Cashion
and Alastair Lynch are all worthy, we believe, of
this recognition.
Of all the Tasmanian football Icons Horrie
Gorringe, The Little Maestro, played his whole
career in Tasmania but was renowned throughout
Australia for his football prowess. The citation
that has been researched and submitted when
nominating Horrie Gorringe for recognition
confirms his impressive contribution to Australian
Football and the positive role Tasmanian football
plays in our great game!
EDITOR’S NOTE: The new inductees and legends
of the Australian Football Hall of Fame will be
announced on 8 June 2011 in Melbourne.
OUR GREAT GAME | Horrie Gorringe – The Little Maestro
Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame description
Quick, elusive and highly skilled, Horrie Gorringe
was renowned throughout Australia for his roving
skills. Renowned for his running, two-sided skills
and resilience he was chased by every VFL club,
but commitments on the family farm meant
that Tasmanian football benefited from the ‘little
maestro’ throughout his career. Following the
disruption of World War One Gorringe went on
to represent Tasmania in the interstate arena a
number of times including the National Carnivals
in 1924, where he won the best player award, and
again in 1927. He emerged from these triumphant
being hailed by Australian Football Legends such as
Roy Cazaly, Gordon Coventry & Ivor Warne – Smith
as the perfect footballer and the greatest rover ever.
A natural footballer, Horrie Gorringe was quiet and
unassuming, and a gentleman on and off the field. He
was born on 4th July 1897 as Horrie Charles Gorringe
and died on Sunday 17th July 1994.
The greatest Tasmanian rover of the early era. The
great Gordon Coventry described the muscular
dynamo as the ‘the perfect footballer’. His brilliant
career in Tasmania was punctuated by War, but
he was renowned for his running, two sided skills
and resilience. Represented Tasmania as a State
Schoolboy in 1908 (Brisbane) and played his first
senior game with Cananore at age 17 (1914). A rover
who was considered the best in Australia.
Gorringe represented Tasmania in the interstate
arena on numerous occasions, including the 1924
and 1927 carnivals. At the Hobart carnival of 1924 he
was voted Tasmania’s best player when he more than
held his own against the very best that the mainland
state sides could throw at him. A year earlier he had
been one of the best players afield in the Tasmanian
Football League’s famous victory over a South
Australian combination on the Adelaide Oval.
Dan Minogue, the VFL champion who later excelled as
a non playing coach of several League clubs and who
coached New Town (Hobart) for a time, once said of
Gorringe:
Although I did not see him in his prime, I would not
be prepared to contradict those who claim he was
the best rover ever. Gorringe had a back move,
a side step and accurate disposal - all in the one
perfectly synchronised movement- which I have
never seen any rover or player execute with such
perfection. Alan La Fontaine, former Melbourne
captain did something approaching it, but without
Gorringe’s superlative deftness and polish.
Gordon Coventry, the great Collingwood goalkicker said
of Gorringe:
Although short, Gorringe was as strong as a lion. He
was as fast as a streak of lightning and could kick
beautifully with either foot when tearing along at his
top. When bumped he simply rolled over and landed
on his feet without losing a stride. He would fight
back like a terrier, never admitting defeat, although he
was crashed heavily many times in games in which I
played. He would be going faster in the last quarter
than most of his opponents were in the early stages
of a match. In fact, he could be described as a super
footballer. It always seemed a pity to me that the
artistry of Gorringe was not seen by the multitude of
Victorian football enthusiasts. To me his displays were
so interesting that I was caught off my guard more
than once as I stood watching him in action.
Possibly the most astute assessment of his ability
comes from two time Brownlow Medallist Ivor Warne-
Smith. He also considered Gorringe the greatest rover
he had seen when writing in the 1950s. This was at a
time when Warne–Smith was a Chairman of Selectors
of the powerful Melbourne teams of that era. Warne-
Smith played in Tasmania when Gorringe was at his
prime in the early and mid 1920s and had seen all the
great rovers of Australian football from 1920 to 1960.
THE WEEK THAT WAS | Review of last weeks games
The Wrest Point State League dished out a round of heavy defeats across the state last week
in one of the northern region versus southern region round of games.
The closest match being at Aurora Stadium between
North Launceston and North Hobart. With both clubs
close on the ladder, all eyes were on both of these
teams to get a gauge of exactly where each one was
at. In a fiercely fought contest it was the Bombers
that prevailed, handing the Dees their second loss
on the trot. Caden Wilson was again in solid form,
collecting his second 6 goal haul in as many weeks.
But Darren Crawford, also with 6 goals, and veterans
Michael Praciak and Shane Wager were impressive
all day and were good enough to score the Bombers
an upset 14 point win.
Devonport was humiliated at KGV as Glenorchy stormed
to an incredible 185 point win. Ben Reynolds and
co-captain Jonathan Bowring were simply unstoppable
up forward, both booting 7 goals each. After a much
needed confidence boosting win, the Pies will only get
better this week when Jason Akermanis rejoins the
group for its match against Lauderdale. Devonport
could be set for another heavy loss when it hosts
Clarence on the coast next game up.
Hobart traveled to West Park on a hot streak of wins
but was handed an instant reality check by the boys
from Burnie. Despite the best efforts of captain
Andrew Lemm, Ryan Sullivan and Sam Reeves… The
young cubs were no match for the Dockers who now
sit just outside of the top 5 by percentage.
Launceston was tested in its match against
Lauderdale at the Beachside Oval. The Bombers led
the match at half time but the ladder leading Blues
class shone through.4 goals to Hudson Medal leader
Brian Finch takes his tally to 41 for the season – as
his Blues take their record to 7 straight wins in 2011.
And at Bellerive Clarence destroyed South
Launceston to the tune of 175 points. Mitch
Williamson again showed his class in just his third
game of the season booting 6 goals. Captain Nick
Paine also chimed in with a half dozen majors.
Veteran Ben Setchell also kicked 2 goals in his return
to the side. South Launceston remains firmly in last
place on the table – still without a win this season.
BURNING QUESTION: Is Clarence about to make
their charge toward the premiership? After a big
win against South Launceston and a match against
Devonport this weekend –and the inclusion of
veterans Ben Setchell and Cameron Blight – the
Roos look set to be cherry ripe for premiership glory.
solid wins against Hobart. Special mentions must
go Tyler Keene who kicked 9 goals in the colts
game and ever reliable Darren Banham who
celebrated his 26th birthday with a best on ground
display in the seniors. It was also a pleasing sight
to see Captain Luke Shackleton and Nick McKenna
make their returns after a few weeks on the
It’s a Long Road...
Our young Roos took control of the game early
and never looked back. Young guns Jordon
Roberts and Brad Coad played well allowing the
Colts to run away winners by 126 points.
Continuing the good form our Seniors had tough
time in the first quarter. Class shining through in
the last three quarters of the game allowed our
boys to win by a massive 175 points. Jackson
O’Brien and Cameron Thurley once again led the
Roos strongly.
Special Mention Segment
Trevor ‘Boots’ Buckley has been an extremely
valuable contributor to our club for a very long
This past Sunday Devonport Football Club
took part in the Salvation Army Red Shield
Appeal. Players split up into groups of three and
door knocked around various houses around
Devonport. The Club were able to raise around
$1500 on the day.
The home game against Clarence this week will
be a celebration of Rhys Colbeck’s 150th game
last week and Al Clements’ 200th game this
week. Al is a great clubman and a great player
who deserves all the accolades he receives. Al
began playing with Devonport in 1999 and has
always given 100% no matter what positions he
has played. Al has proven he is a quality player
whether he is down back, in the midfield or even
up forward. He has played in 4 losing Grand Finals
during his time at Devonport and is committed
towards giving it another crack in years to come.
This year in his 12th season at the club he has
taken the captaincy role and although at times it
is a difficult task he has risen to the challenge.
So come on down this Saturday against Clarence
It was great to get the season back on track last
weekend with two impressive wins over a young
forward to the challenges that are ahead.
Many thanks to Dean Cullen and the crew at
club during 2011 and thanks also to PETUNA
Congratulation to Simon Spencer who played his
outstanding role model around our club.
Today is a huge game with Lauderdale always hard
Membership Drive
A large membership base is important for any
sporting club. These days, it’s the ‘political
clout’ that comes from having a substantial
membership which puts a club in a strong
position.
To this end, the club is embarking on a
membership drive to build the substantial
membership base we need to enter discussions
from a position of strength. We invite (and urge!)
you to immediately renew your membership of
the club. Whether you are a past player or a longtime
supporter, we want you on our membership
books so that we can promote and safeguard this
proud club.
We are so intent on returning membership to
the numbers we had a decade ago, the club
is offering you membership for the balance
of this season and for the next at the current
membership rate. In other words, you get two
years membership for the price of one!
Look out for your membership forms in the mail
or contact admin@hobartfc.com.au and request a
membership form.
Website
The website is still a work in progress, thanks to
Matt Stevo for putting the hard work and getting
this page up and running, once again hobartfc.
com.au is the address
Last week…….
Men
The longest bus trip in the State League became
even longer after Hobart was completely
outplayed by a big Burnie outfit, less said the
better about this game. Today the boys will be
keen to atone for their bus trip to Burnie against a
star studded North Hobart outfit at North Hobart
Oval. The young cubs nearly had the Demons
measure at the TCA earlier in the year and will
be looking forward to continuing the fierce rivalry
with the Club at the bottom of the hill.
Women
The women have a fortnight off now to look
into ways they can improve an individuals and
as a team after a poor first half display against
reigning premiers Launceston last Sunday. The
girls had been getting better each week and
will be working hard over the next two weeks to
make sure their next game against Spreyton is an
improved performance. The two week break for
the state carnival couldn’t have came at a better
time as our girls will appreciate the rest and the
side will also get some players back from injury.
Although disappointed in losing last week against
Launceston, our coaching staff, players and
supporters realise that we are not far away from
the top sides. Congratulations to Jack Siggins on
a terrific game on the leagues leading goal kicker
and this was Siggo’s best game for the season by
It was great to see Joey Edwards play his first
Joyce also making his 2011 debut in the colts our
injury list is now reduced. We welcome back Tom
Brennan this week after a spell on the side lines
Well done to both sides last week after hard
fought wins down at Lauderdale. Both sides had
slow starts which resulted in them trailing at half
time. As expected the Southern Bombers threw
everything they had at us all day, but each side
did what they had to do to get the four points.
This week we play our cross town rivals Northern
Bombers who would be on a high after defeating
North Hobart last weekend. It’s sure to be a far
tougher task than last time we met, so it’s crucial
for our boys to get a good start.
Congratulations Tye Stewart on reaching the great
milestone of 150 games. This was achieved in
the game against South Launceston where the
Bombers came away with a convincing win. And
a fantastic win over North Hobart last weekend
in what was a very tight and exciting game for the
four quarters. With persistence and great team
work, we came away with the 4 points and a great
morale booster for the boys. This week’s game
against Launceston will be a hard match and we
are looking forward to making amends for a heavy
loss when we met them at their home ground.
North Launceston finally
repaid the faith Ricky
Ponting has shown in his
hometown Club. Tipsters
who stuck fast with the
southern Clubs struggled
as northern Clubs won 3 of
5 contests.
After recording a 73 point victory against
Sandringham in Game 1, the team was full of
confidence. The game was played in greasy but fine
conditions after heavy rain overnight that created
a physical game with an increased number of
stoppages.
Tasmania started the game strongly, winning the ball
from centre square bounces and giving its forwards
many opportunities. Julian Dobosz started well with
two first quarter goals and with goals from Damon
Smith, Martyn Allison and Jake Jenkins Tasmania
was scoring freely.
In defence Tasmania was even more impressive
with the back six holding the opposition goalless, a
feat that would continue for the entire game. Henry
Schade was outstanding at full back, Dylan Riley
swept up loose balls and all players were playing
their roles to perfection.
In the second half Tasmania continued to dominate
play and won the game by a huge margin of 115
points. It should be mentioned that Oakleigh were
undermanned with a large number of players being
unavailable due to private school commitments,
however Tasmania’s efforts were also outstanding.
YOUNG PLAYER AWARD | Our Rising Stars
This week’s winner is Henry Schade from the North Hobart Football Club.
Henry played in the winning Tasmania U18 team against the Oakleigh Chargers last
Saturday. Playing at Full Back he was part of a back six that kept the opposition
goalless for the game. Henry played his opponent high up the ground and was able to
intercept the ball as it entered defensive 50 regularly, gathering 5 uncontested marks
from the opposition. He also had 8 handball receives which showed his ability to run
off his opponent and set up attacking play.
