40 Tasmanian State Fixture 2011
From the editor
The Wrest Point State League has
taken on a new complexion after the
completion of Round 4.
The Launceston Blues have achieved
what no other Club has to date in
defeating Clarence at ‘Fortress
Bellerive’. The Blues and the Glenorchy
Magpies now go a game clear of North
Hobart in 3rd spot and have created
a handy break from the other finals
aspirants.
Of the other teams the gauntlet has
been thrown down to Clarence. They
have found April a real struggle, but as
we all know no titles are handed out
in months starting with the letter ‘A’.
While these four teams appear to be a
class above the rest, every other Club
is still mathematically vying for the fifth
and final position in the finals.
The RECORD’s reading highlights are
our reports on the contributions of
umpires and mothers to Australian
Football. I am sure you would agree
that we can’t have a game without their
support.
Have a great Mothers Day split round at
The AFL made a record breaking announcement last week when advising a new agreement
had been reached for the broadcasting rights for the next five years (2012 – 2016).
The AFL made a record breaking announcement
last week when advising a new agreement had been
reached for the broadcasting rights for the next five
years (2012 – 2016).
The new agreement will deliver $1,253 billion to the
game over this five year period, as a combination of
cash ($1,118 billion) and contra support.
The AFL’s Chief Executive, Andrew Demetriou,
announced in the official media release that the AFL
will continue with the task of working with the AFL
clubs, AFLPA and other stakeholders to provide a
distribution that fairly rewarded players, supported
the long term health of all clubs in the competition,
provided state leagues with funding to support
volunteers and ensured supporters continued to
enjoy affordable admission and membership prices.
The relevance of the above comments is the
reference to state leagues. So what does this
potentially mean to our Tasmanian State League?
At the moment AFL Tasmania provides a $50,000
annual development grant to each of the 10 TSL
clubs via a license agreement arrangement. In
return each club is required to work cooperatively
with AFL Tasmania in developing a plan for Australian
Rules Football in their development zone. AFL
Tasmania will be seeking additional funding through
the new broadcasting agreement to grow the current
investment provided to the state league clubs. Our
aim is to direct up to $1 million annually to our
Tasmanian State League clubs, i.e. an average of
$100,000 per club.
It is AFL Tasmania’s view that if we do acquire
additional funding our priority will be the support of
our Tasmanian State League clubs. Our preference
will be to invest our funding into two elements, those
being club management and talent identification and
player development.
It will become the responsibility of AFL Tasmania’s
senior management team in Scott Wade (Chief
Executive), Trent Bartlett (Business Development
Manager), Nick Probert (State Talent Manager)
and Shaun Young (General Manager-TSL) to
develop a strong business case to be presented
to David Matthews (General Manager, National &
International Development Manager, AFL).
David Matthews, and the AFL executive management
team, is very supportive of our Tasmanian State
League competition; however, they will need to be
convinced that our Tasmanian State League clubs
have the commitment to work cooperatively with AFL
Tasmania to deliver genuine growth and real quality
in each of the AFL’s seven core game development
objective areas:
1. Participation
2. Community Development
3. Community Engagement
4. Facilities
5. Talent & Second Tier
6. Fans
7. People & Culture
The new broadcasting rights deal will enable
Australian Rules Football too well and truly establish
ourselves as the dominant football code, and
arguably the dominant sporting code, in the nation.
OUR GREAT GAME | Tasmanian All Australian Umpire of the Year
Tasmanian State League Umpire of the Year, Nick Foot, has been named the AFL/Australian
Sports Commission (ASC) 2010 All Australian Umpire.
Foot, who umpired the TSL Senior Grand Final
and the interstate match between Tasmania and
Queensland at Southport, was selected for the
honour from a top field from around the country.
The AFL/ASC program sees one umpire chosen
from each State and Territory at the start of the year
as participants in the High Performance Umpiring
Academy that was coordinated by Brett Allen, former
AFL field umpire. Participants attended a number of
seminars and camps during the year and undertook
various personal professional development
initiatives. During the year Foot mentored a young
TSL field umpire and conducted coaching sessions
for TSL umpires and an umpiring course for High
School students.
As part of the award Foot has been travelling with
the Australian Under 18 team on a recent tour of the
United Kingdom, Italy and Turkey to play matches.
The umpiring highlight of the trip was officiating in an
Australia versus European International Team match
in London. The Australian U18 team also attended
the ANZAC day ceremony at Gallipoli.
AFL Tasmania State Umpiring Manager/Coach, Mike
Brown, says it was a fantastic effort by Foot.
The High Performance Umpiring Academy was made
up of eight umpires from all States and Territories all
of whom are considered as future AFL prospects. To
be named the All Australian Umpire is a tremendous
achievement. Nick has always displayed ability and
potential, but in the last two years he has markedly
improved his fitness and professionalism, which has
culminated in him winning this prestigious award.
Foot is also currently trialing for the AFL Panel. As
part of the trial he attended an AFL Umpires Camp
in late January and officiated in NAB Cup Pre-
Season matches. Nick’s overseas trip and AFL trial
emphasise the excellent opportunities and pathway
available for Tasmanian umpires to reach the top.
AFL Supplementary ‘Rookie’ Umpire List
Tasmanian Field Umpires, Nick Foot and Shaun
Gleeson, have been selected on the 2011 AFL
Supplementary ‘Rookie’ Umpires list.
AFL Tasmania State League General Manager,
Shaun Young, said the inclusion of the two umpires
on the AFL list was a vindication of the Tasmanian
State League (TSL) and the umpiring standard. The
selection of Nick and Shaun clearly demonstrate that
Tasmania’s best umpires now have a direct pathway
through to the AFL, the same as the players. Prior
to the introduction of the TSL our best umpires were
required to go through the VFL system to be accepted
onto the AFL Umpiring Panel.
AFL Tasmania’s State Umpiring Manager/Coach.
Mike Brown, initiated an exhaustive process that
the umpires must follow to be chosen for the AFL
Umpiring list. The first criterion is to be appointed
and then perform at a high standard in the TSL
Grand Final. Following this a review and analysis
of the Grand Final is undertaken and nominations
are provided to AFL Field Umpires Coach, Rowan
4
OUR GREAT GAME | Taking the umpires pathway to the AFL
Sawers. There is then a five month trial process
which includes passing endurance and fitness
benchmarks, attending an AFL Umpires Camp, and
officiating in the NAB Cup.
The AFL Supplementary listing requires umpires to
complete the same activities as all the other AFL
Umpires. This includes the training and coaching
sessions, weekly teleconferences and acting
regularly as an Emergency Umpire at AFL matches.
When not being involved with AFL, the field umpires
officiate in their local leagues, which will be of great
benefit to the TSL umpiring group.
Taking the Umpire’s Pathway to the AFL
There are currently 4 Tasmanians on the AFL
Umpiring List and in the recent past Chris Hay
(Boundary) and Stephen Shepherd (Goal) have also
been listed. Stephen achieved the ultimate for any
umpire by being appointed to an AFL Grand Final.
AFL umpires – how fit are they?
In January, the AFL umpires gathered for their
annual pre-season training camp, which brings
the national panel of umpires together to ensure
the group is all on the same page heading into
the new season. The weekend also provides a
forum for bench mark fitness tests. Basically if an
umpire doesn’t meet the benchmark time, they
won’t get to umpire a game. No exceptions.
This year each umpire discipline runs a standard
5km time trial. The benchmark times are tough
to beat including: Field – 18:45; Boundary –
18.00; Goal – 23:00.
Whilst the majority of umpires pass the tests,
thanks to demanding training programs and
plenty of hard work, the top 3 times for each
umpire discipline make fascinating reading.
• Boundary: Darren Wilson 14:48; Nathan Doig
15:10; Jace Collingridge 15:30
• Field: Matt Stevic 16:41; Hayden Kennedy
16:47; Ben Ryan 16:47 and Tasmania’s Shaun
Gleeson 17:01 (5th).
• Goal: David Dixon 18:37; Steve Axon 19:46;
Dale Edwick 19:52
Darren Wilson who time trialed in 14:48 regularly
runs on the pro circuit and his time would place
him in the top 20 in open competition on a
national stage. Almost half of the boundary
umpires (17 of the 38) ran a time quicker than
the fastest field umpire. The 45 year old Hayden
Kennedy came in a super fast time of 16:47.
The quickest goal umpire David Dixon ran a time
which would be fast enough to pass the field
umpire’s benchmark tests.
These are all amazing times and are a real
reflection of the amazing skills, athleticism and
hard work put in by all the umpires on the AFL
national panel.
THE WEEK THAT WAS | Review of last weeks games
TSL history was created under lights at Bellerive Oval on Saturday night with Launceston
rewriting the record books.
Launceston became the first team to defeat Clarence
at Bellerive in the history of TSL football and did so with
a 17-point victory. Coming into the game unbeaten and
full of confidence, the Blues took it up to wasteful Roos
outfit from the start. Unlike last year’s finals where it
was full-forward Brian Finch or bust, Launceston now
has multiple goal-kicking options. Both sides had 13
scoring shots in the first half, but it was the visitors who
led by 20-points as Clarence kicked 3.10. The Roos
came out firing after the long break, smashing seven
goals to grab the ascendency and seemingly on way
to keeping its unbeaten home record intact. Trailing
by four-points at the last change to the dual reigning
premier on the road, many sides would have folded, but
not Launceston. They kicked the last four goals of the
game to secure the best win in the competition. Joe
Groenewegen was outstanding while the Blues had 10
goal-kickers to illustrate their more even spread. The
result leaves Clarence with two losses, which is more
defeats than it suffered for all of 2010.
Glenorchy also continued its unbeaten start to the
season with a 40-point win over North Launceston at
Aurora Stadium. The Magpies trailed by seven points
at quarter time but dominated from then on with 14
goals to six after the first break. Co-captains Jaye
Bowden and Jon Bowring hit the scoreboard with nine
goals between them, while Brownlow Medallist Jason
Akermanis played his best game for his new side with
two goals and plenty of scoring assists. The Northern
Bombers again came up short against one of the TSL’s
big guns.
North Hobart put together a four-quarter performance
for the first time this season with a dominant 54-point
thrashing of a disappointing Burnie at North Hobart
Oval. The Demons also unearthed a potential star in
key forward Julien DeBosz. The 18-year-old kicked six
goals from 10 shots and dominated forward, while Ken
Hall racked up the touches and scored three majors.
Burnie lost three key players – Luke Shackleton,
Sam Whish-Wilson and Zac Hislop – before half time
that set them back but only kicked two goals after
half time. The one positive for the Dockers was the
improved form of big man Jason Laycock around the
ground and in the ruck.
Lauderdale did it the hard way but it recorded its
second win of the year with a come from behind ninepoint
win over Hobart at Lauderdale Oval. The Tigers
would rue yet another inconsistent performance as
they conceded the last five goals to none. Former VFL
midfielder Matthew Smith kicked three goals in a best
afield performance for the victors.
Many believed Devonport would not win a game this
season, but the young Magpies scored a 48-point win
over South Launceston at Devonport. A seven-goal to
two burst in the second quarter set up the win, with
Phil Crowden kicking five for the victors. The win was
the perfect tonic for the Pies but leaves the Bulldogs
without a win and eyeing off their third straight TSL
wooden spoon.
BURNING QUESTIONS:
Is it the end of Clarence’s reign as the TSL
powerhouse?
Where is the light at the end of the tunnel for South
Launceston?
Today we would like to welcome all the mothers
to today’s game and wish you a happy mother’s
day tomorrow. On Sunday morning the club will
be hosting the Burnie AFL Auskick centre. All
senior and colt players will be in attendance
taking the young stars of tomorrow through their
paces. After the clinic the club will be holding
a sausage sizzle and has heaps of giveaways
thanks to our partnership arrangement we have
with the Fremantle Football Club
Over the last couple of weeks the club has been
in negotiation with Andrew Lee on a possible
return home. Andy left our club 7 years ago
when he was drafted to Essendon. After leaving
Essendon after 3 years he spent the last 4 in
the SANFL before deciding to return home.
During the week the club put pen to paper and
has signed Andy up for the next 3 years. No
doubt over the next few weeks we look forward
to Andy and his former Essendon team mate
in Jason Laycock taking up the challenge and
leading the young Dockers forward.
A week to consider...
Last weekend we came up against a very
strong and skilful Launceston outfit in both
games.
The Colts started poorly and couldn’t manage
to get their game going at the same level as
Launceston. The Blues ran away with the
game by 40 points. Gallant performances from
Andrew Blight and Aaron Parker helped us stay
in touch for so long.
Our senior side came up against a fit
Launceston side looking for revenge. It was an
evenly poised match at quarter time, however
our inaccurate kicking pushed the Blues into
the box seat at half time. A dominant third
quarter by the Roos saw them 4 points up at
the last break. The Blues fought back however
running out 17 point winners.
Thank you to all our sponsors for your support
with special mention to Diagrind and Raine
and Horne for their joint major sponsorship
and to Parmic Fire Protection and Ampac for
their naming right sponsorship.
Next week the Roos take on Eastern Shore
rival Lauderdale at Bellerive. The seniors kick
off the day at 1:10pm with the Colts playing
after at 3:50pm.
What a great performance from the seniors in
front of the home crowd against the Bulldogs.
This week’s senior side had an average age
of 20.7 years old and it was great to see the
young players really step up and produce a
very exciting brand of football.
Standout performances from Brad Symmons
and Ben Walker with the help of Mariners
Brennon Kendall and Aaron McNab, with
three goals each help to guide the team to a
48 point victory. Captain Al Clements was
once again a strong presence in the centre
with vice-captains Justin Rodman and Phil
Crowden wreaking havoc up forward with 7
goals between them. Another 3 goals to Scott
Bennetts also proved handy while debutants
Jake Howard and Ryan George both had
impressive starts and have made it hard for
selectors this week.
The Colts were beaten by 11 points but large
improvements were shown once again.
This week’s game against Hobart is another
challenge with 9 of the senior side group
making the trip south for the first time. There
is no doubt they will be attempting to replicate
last week’s effort and string two wins together.
Saturday was another great day of footy at
Aurora Stadium. We had a mixed day with the
Colts going down but showing some good signs.
Particularly pleasing was to see Ben Brown in
action for the 1st time playing a half and taking
some great grabs. The Senior contest was a
tight game until three quarter time when our
fitness told out and we finished the game off
very well.
Today we welcome North Hobart to KGV. This
game means a lot after the Demons defeated
us in last year’s semi-final. Best of luck to Byron
and Matthew with their respective teams.
An evening with Mark Maclure
19th May – Former Carlton Captain Mark
Maclure will be our guest in the Clubrooms
He made his senior VFL debut midway through
the 1974 season against Geelong. He stayed
with the Blues for an impressive thirteen
seasons during which he played 243 games
and kicked 327 goals.
Some of this greatest career achievements
included representing Victoria, and heading
Carlton’s goal kicking list twice. He was also
Carlton’s premiership centre half forward in
their premiership teams of 1979, 1981 and
1982. He portrayed a sometimes fearsome
physical presence towards opponents but was
ferociously protective of smaller team mates in
the forward lines.
Maclure was nameD the Blues captain for
the season of 1986 season but it was not a
successful year for him as he was troubled by
injuries. The recovered enough to take the
Blues into a finals campaign but it proved not
to be successful as they lost to Hawthorn in
the Grand Final that year. He retired shortly
afterwards.
These days, Mark works as an expert football
commentator for ABC radio, a panellist on
AFL 360 and is also the General Manager of
Valvoline Car Care.
A great effort from both our teams last
Saturday notching another double. Our colts
continue to play good footy and although
falling behind early, were never really troubled.
The senior team however did it the hard way
coming from nearly 4 goals down at the last
change kicking 5 majors to nil to take the 4
points.
Congratulations to Matty Smith who played
a superb game. Matt joined us this year
after playing VFL footy with Coburg and after
seeing his performance last Saturday we at
Lauderdale are all excited regarding the rest of
the season.
Our senior team will enjoy the break this week,
with expectations of key players returning from
injury in a fortnights time when we take on
Clarence at Bellerive
It is common knowledge that our canteen
makes the best coffee of all the TSL clubs.
Another great day/evening for the club last
Round which saw both sides winning in what is
said to be one of the most difficult tasks in TSL
footy, beating Clarence on their home soil.
The Colts kicked off the evening with a tough
win which saw them successfully hold off
several Clarence comebacks.
The seniors faced a similar situation with
Clarence dominating the third quarter to bring
them back into the game. To our boys credit,
they regained composure and brought the arm
wrestle back in their favour.
It was great to see Wagon back in the senior
side and playing at his best. It was also good
to see Scuba kicking off his highlight reel so
early in the season (at the expense of Bricko’s
head). Keep your eye out in the upcoming
almost Football legends segments on the footy
AFL Tasmania will donate $25 to Cancer Council
Tasmania’s Pink Ribbon Day Appeal for every goal
kicked in the Hobart vs Devonport game at the
TCA ground this weekend.
“Cancer Council Tasmania is fortunate to have the
support of organisation such as AFL Tasmania,”
Cancer Council CEO, Darren Carr said. “Cancer
Council Tasmania encourages all Tasmanians to
take their mothers to enjoy the Cadbury Mothers’
Day Round.”
So please take the time this week to thank not
only your mum, but all the mums who help at your
football club. We appreciate their time and effort
and are very lucky to have such a hard working
and dedicated group of volunteers.
We wish all our mums a happy Mother’s Day!
TIPSTERS | The Torch Hot Early
The Wrest Point State League has brought together some leading Tasmanians from throughout Australia
to test their knowledge of this year’s competition. The inaugural Guest Tipsters competition has a cross
representation of the captains of government, business and sport. As well, we have recent Tasmanian
draftee, Josh Green, and our own resident expert – The Torch – giving us their insights to who will win week by
week in the 2011 Wrest Point State League.
Round 4 was tough for
his nerve to build a handy
break over a tight bunch.
TASSIE TIPSTERS | Blues and Bulldogs keep them guessing
The fourth round of Tassie Tipsters has proven
a difficult test of the competition leaders. With
Launceston scoring over the Roos at Bellerive
and the battle of the wooden spoon favourites
capable of going either way, no tipster has
been able to maintain a perfect record.
This week’s winner Mr Gary Carr of Mowbray
tipped 5 out of 5 and has won the weekly cash
prize and a Radio Sport National KB Sherrin.
YOUNG GUNS | Tasmania’s Under 18 Campaign Begins
The Tasmania Under 18 team will started its 2011 campaign shortly with two games in the
next fortnight against TAC Cup teams the Sandringham Dragons and the Oakleigh Chargers.
Each year Tasmania’s Under 18’s play seven games
in the May to July period. In two of these games
Tasmania plays against TAC cup teams, with the
other five games forming the NAB Under 18 National
Championships.
The TAC cup games are played as part of the TAC
Cup roster alongside other Division 2 states, with the
opposition TAC teams still earning 4 points for a win.
They are a valuable addition to the Under 18 season,
providing the players with further opportunities to
represent the state and display their talents in front of
AFL club recruiting staff.
Today Under 18 players are playing at their TSL
clubs before the beginning of the Under 18 season
next weekend. Tasmania’s first game will be a tough
encounter against Sandringham, who currently sit on
top of the TAC ladder and are undefeated this season.
The five National Championships games are spread
across a six week “carnival” to enable players to time
recover and present in the best possible condition
each game.
Tasmania’s first National Championship game is
against 2010 National Division 1 title holders Victoria
Country at Bellerive Oval. In 2009 Tasmania led the
Victoria Country team by 14 points in the same fixture
before being overrun in the last quarter to lose by 15
points. The 2009 Victoria Country team consisted
of current AFL players such as Dustin Martin and
David Astbury (Richmond), Gary Rohan (Sydney), Ben
Cunnington and Ryan Bastinac (North Melbourne),
Jasper Pittard (Port Adelaide) Trent McKenzie (Gold
Coast), Allen Christenson (Geelong) and Koby Stevens
(West Coast)
Tasmania’s team consisted of eight currently listed
players – Josh Green & Ryan Harwood (Brisbane),
Jesse Crichton (Fremantle), Jeremy Howe (Melbourne),
Daniel Archer (St Kilda), Marcus Davies (Carlton), Luke
Russell & Jacob Gillbee (Gold Coast)
The 2011 roster is as follows:
