THIS WEEK’S COVER
Clarence and Tasmania’s Brett
Geappen. Thanks for the memories
of a great playing career.
from the editor
It is Super Saturday again in the 2010
Wrest Point State League. It should be
an exciting and crucial round with every
game expected to be hotly contested.
After a week off for the State game
against Queensland, the RECORD is full
of reading highlight’s this week. The
‘View From Here’ and the ‘Our Great
Game’ articles are poignant in their
analysis of the great playing career of
Clarence and Tasmania’s Brett ‘Budgie’
Geappen, which has been cut short by a
serious injury.
The Record had the chance to speak
with Brett and he is looking forward
to putting all his energy into the new
phase of his career as a non-playing
coach. Brett also reflected on his
15 years playing at the top levels of
Tasmanian football through youth
and senior state teams, the Tassie
Mariners and Tasmanian Devils and the
Clarence FC. Brett was thankful for the
team behind him including his on field
colleagues, coach Matthew Armstrong,
and especially his parents, brothers,
wife and children for their unswerving
support.
Have a great Saturday at the footy.
VIEW FROM HERE | Tasmania’s fortnight of football highs and lows
There has certainly been plenty of drama and
big news stories involving Tasmanian football
over the past few weeks:
· The unacceptable on and off field behaviour at an
NEFU game between Lilydale and Ringarooma.
· Our state under 18 team being belted by Victoria
Metro.
· The debate and uncertainty surrounding the future
of the state wise reserves competition.
· Matthew Richardson and Darrin Pritchard being
upgraded from inductee to legend status in the
Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.
· 200 game AFL players Brady Rawlings, Russell
Robertson and Brad Green being announced
as our first three new inductees into the 2010
Tasmania Football Hall of Fame.
· Andrew Demetriou and Gillon McLachlan visiting
Hobart to have strategic discussions with the
Premier and AFL Tasmania about the short and
long term future of the AFL product and broader
football growth and investment opportunities in
Tasmania.
· Our state senior team being belted by Queensland
on the Gold Coast last weekend.
· Former Tassie Mariner and Clarence youngster Jack
Riewoldt kicking 10 goals for Richmond and as a
result being the leading goal kicker in the AFL.
The above is certainly evidence that life in
Tasmanian football is far from dull and that our
sport on and off the field continues to be a game
of high and lows.
Mixed into all of this was the most unfortunate
neck injury to Clarence coach, champion player
and current TSL leading goal kicker Brett
Geappen. An injury that has unfortunately cut
short Brett’s wonderful playing career!
Brett (or Budgie as he is known) began his playing
career at a high level with the Tassie Mariners in
the TAC Cup competition, including playing games
at Clarence whenever the Mariners had a week
off. He also performed exceptionally well as a
state underage player at AFL national underage
championship level.
Brett just missed out on the opportunity to play
AFL football. However, he became a very, very
good VFL player with Tasmanian Devils where
he played over 100 VFL games, captained the
Devils and won a club best and fairest award (the
Alastair Lynch medal).
Last year Brett was the playing coach of the first
senior team to win the Wrest Point State League
premiership and this season he had kicked 62
goals at the half way mark of the TSL season and
he was certainly on track to be the competitions
first player to kick 100 goals.
Sincere congratulations to Brett Geappen for a
sensational playing career.
Brett might well yet become one of our State’s
most successful coaches. Good luck Budgie!
CFC NOTES BROUGHT TO YOU BY ASSET TRAINING
– REGISTERED TRAINING ORGANISATION
The past two weeks have been very eventful
for the club.
Firstly the unfortunate forced retirement of our
coach due to serious injury. Brett has been
an outstanding player both in the VFL and TSL
and his loss is a huge blow not just for us but
for football in general.
Brett will continue as non playing coach and
the challenge now is to maintain the winning
formula he so brilliantly led on the field.
Secondly that article in the press inferring our
players were involved in a brawl on the Hobart
waterfront. Our investigation has revealed no
current player was directly involved.
Saturday 3 July v Glenorchy we celebrate the
40th anniversary of our first premiership in
1970. Many of the team will be present so
come along and join them.
The following day sees the return of the
traditional “Sunday School” to be held at
the changerooms commencing at 10am.
All past/present players and officials and
members welcome.
DEVONPORT
Away at Aurora 2 weeks ago on the late shift,
our Seniors just got home after a hard fought
game against the Dogs. South took it right up
to us and we were lucky to win.
Our U18’s and Reserves had to play at
Invermay Park and didn’t find it a very good
hunting ground. Playing apart from the rest of
the club doesn’t help when you play away.
Our main stretch of away games is now behind
us and we can look forward to a number of
local games and good nights at the club.
Congratulations goes to Ben Reynolds and
Brad McDonald for making the Tasmanian
State Team that played Queensland last
weekend. Even though they were flogged
Ben kicked about 4 goals and Brad was very
serviceable.
We have the Annual Black and White Ball
tonight and as usual the Ball Committee have
done a fantastic job in organising and preparing
what is shaping up to be a fantastic night.
Other events on the horizon are ‘A 200 club’
and ‘Players Review’.
O U R G R E AT G A M E | The King of Bellerive has Retired. Long live the King!
The State League’s leading goalkicker Brett
Geappen dropped a bombshell last week. He
has announced his retirement because of a
severe neck injury on the advice of two doctors.
Only days out of hospital, and still wearing
a neck brace, the playing coach of reigning
premier Clarence broke the news to the shellshocked
Roos.
Geappen’s retirement has robbed Tasmanian
football of one of its finest players, and puts
a dent in Clarence’s bid for back-to-back
premierships. “The boys were pretty gutted
when I told them the news, and I’m gutted having
to retire,” Geappen said as he watched the
Tasmanian team train at Bellerive Oval.
Geappen, who has just turned 29, kicked 60
goals in the first 10 rounds of the state league
season. He said his retirement was forced upon
him after both his doctor and a surgeon told
him to pull the pin. Geappen fell heavily in the
Roos’ win over North Launceston at Bellerive
last Saturday week, leaving him with a pins and
needles sensation in his right arm.
Geappen’s surgeon told him to retire or face dire
consequences. “He said I couldn’t play anymore.
That was it,” Geappen said. “I’ve got a bulging disc
above the one I’ve already had fused. “There’s a
bit of blood there from the bulging disc, and there’s
a hot-spot on my spinal cord, which is a bit scary.
“He said it was too risky. If I get another knock or
fall again, it could be permanent.”
Geappen believes the Roos will remain on track
for back-to-back flags. “There are four or five
others in the side who can fill the void and play
the role I’ve been playing,” he said.
Geappen’s career is peppered with highlights,
including two premierships with Clarence plus
winning the Baldock Medal as best afield in last
year’s grand final win. Most of his career was
spent with the Tasmanian Devils in the VFL, where
he played a club record 138 games, was club
champion in 2006 and runner-up three times.
Geappen was Devils captain for two seasons and
played in 12 VFL finals.
Tasmanian coach, Matthew Armstrong, who
also coached Geappen for 6 seasons with
the Tasmanian Devils was rich in his praise of
‘Budgie’s’ playing ability and contribution to
football. “Brett was the best inside midfielder
of his era based in Tasmania and always gave
more than 100% for the Map.” He described the
retirement of Geappen to injury as a sad day for
the competition as well as Brett himself, but was
looking forward to watching and supporting him
as he continues as head coach at Clarence.
G R A S S R O O T S | Prospect Sharks – a new club on the rise!
The Cripps Prospect Sharks Junior Football
Club was established in 2002 by a number of
stakeholders in Northern Tasmanian football, and
with the support and guidance of AFL Tasmania.
The Club became a separate legal entity in 2005,
being fully incorporated and constituted.
The Club was formed because there was a lack
of playing opportunities for a large population of
new families moving into the western suburbs of
Launceston and the Meander Valley. The Club
identified Prospect Park as a suitable venue and
with the support of Meander Valley Council has
built a first class community football venue, with
more work still being carried out and funded by
the Club.
The progress in just over 8 years has seen the
Club grow to the point where it has now achieved
its initial goal to provide a pathway for players
from AFL Auskick up to U16 and is now focusing
on providing a senior pathway into community and
TSL football for graduates. The Club has not set
any boundaries on the level that it aspires to, but
has established a senior Club and is playing in the
Leven FA in 2010.
The Club has not only provided participation
opportunities for thousands of young players but
has also enjoyed some success in winning 4 out
of 10 available premierships in the NTJFA in 2008
YOUNG GUNS | Tassie badly defeated by Vic Metro
Tasmania played Division 1 state Victoria Metro
at Bellerive Oval last Saturday in slippery but
firm conditions. The team were optimistic after
a first up win against Queensland and a solid
performance by the Mariners in 2009 against
Vic Country in the same fixture.
As with all games played by Tasmania and
particularly against Division 1 states, the team
went into the game with a mindset that the
visitors would be provided with a physical, one on
one contest that would test the commitment of
the Victorian team.
This was not the story of the first quarter, with
the Victorians establishing an early ascendency
in their general play that led to many scoring
opportunities. Vic Metro midfielders were given
too much latitude with Captain Mitchell Wallis,
son of ex- Footscray Captain Steve Wallis leading
the way with 11 first quarter possessions.
Tasmania did recover towards the end of the first
quarter with Joe Groenewegen goaling after a
free kick, but at quarter time Tasmania trailed Vic
Metro by 17 points.
The second quarter saw a similar trend with Vic
Metro players much cleaner in congestion with
their handling of the slippery ball than Tasmania
and more damaging with their use of the ball
when in possession. At half time Vic Metro had
extended their lead to 40 points.
Despite the best efforts of Tasmania the second half
saw Vic Metro extend their lead to eventually run out
96 point winners. Tasmania showed glimpses of
good play but were outclassed on the day by both a
more skilled and more committed unit.
For Tasmania, it is appropriate to recognise the
defensive efforts of some players. Captain Josh
Green tried hard in the midfield with 9 tackles,
7 hard ball gets and 9 clearances. Adam Green
and Marty Allison had 7 tackles with Jacob Gillbee
gathering 6 tackles and 4 hard ball gets.
The Tasmania U18 team plays the Northern
Territory at Aurora Stadium at 11:00am today.
Last Saturday the Tasmania U16 team held
their final practice game against an invitational
Tasmania U17 team. The U17 team was
selected from players who have shown good
form at Tasmanian State League colts or senior
level and who are not currently Tasmania U18
academy members.
The game was played at a high tempo and after a
scrambling start in frosty conditions some excellent
passages of play were executed by both teams.
Thank you to TSL U18 coaches: Zane Littlejohn
(North Launceston), Ricky McCulloch (North
Hobart) and Matthew McGee (South Launceston)
for their assistance with the preparation and
coaching of the Tasmanian U17 invitational team.
The Tasmania U16 team will travel to West Sydney
for the Nationals between July 3 -10.
T H E W H I S T L E B LOW E R | Umpires achieve interstate honours
This week we feature the 3 Umpires who
represented Tasmania in last week’s
interstate match between Tasmania and
Queensland, namely Nick Foot, Adam
Robinson and Damion Oxley.
Nick Foot is 22 and is from Hobart. He has been
umpiring for 9 years having started in the Boundary
discipline and then moving over to the Field. Since
then he has had tremendous success including
officiating in 2 National Championships. Last year,
Nick was appointed to the TSL Senior Grand Final
which he says has been the highlight of his career.
This season Nick has been selected to be the
Tasmanian Representative in the Australian Sports
Commission Scholarship Program. This course
covers all aspects of umpiring as well as personal
development goals. As part of the program, Nick
will conduct coaching sessions with Field Umpires
as well as coordinating umpiring courses with high
school students. Nick will also mentor a young up
and coming umpire during the season. This will
entail giving feedback on match days and offering
assistance and advice on a regular basis. Nick says
that his long term ambition is to reach AFL level.
Adam Robinson is 26 and is from Launceston
where he has lived for the past 4 years after
moving up from Hobart for University studies.
He has always been a Boundary Umpire and
is now in his 7th season. Adam’s father John
is also involved in umpiring and is presently a
Goal Umpires Game Day Coach after having a
distinguished career including being on the VFL
Squad for 3 seasons. Adam says one of his
career highlights was umpiring a SFL Regional
Seniors Preliminary Final with his father officiating
as a Goal Umpire. The biggest influences on
Adam’s career have been Paul Bidgood, Cameron
Lee and Symon Bird who have all been involved
in Boundary Umpiring at both an officiating and
coaching level. Adam says his main ambition is to
umpire a TSL Senior Grand Final.
Damion Oxley resides in Oakdowns near Hobart
and is 29 years of age. He commenced Goal
Umpiring in 1999 and is currently in his 12th
season as a Goal Umpire. Damion lists his
best 2 appointments as the 2009 TSL Senior
Grand Final and the 2007 VFL Senior Second
Semi Final. Overall he has officiated in 150
TSL and SFL senior matches. Damion says the
biggest influence in his career has been Bob
Webb who former goal umpire and is now the
Tasmanian Football Umpires Association (TFUA)
Goal Umpires Coach. Damion is engaged to be
married and his fiancée is Claire Stanwix. He
works as a Parking and Information Officer with
the Hobart City Council.
STATE OF AFFAIRS | Hall of Fame – A major undertaking providing rich rewards
AFL Tasmania’s Board of Management is very
proud of the initiative and efforts of our past
and present members, our management and
staff, corporate partners and a number of
specialist consultants in providing, firstly, the
Tasmanian Team of the Century, and since 2005
the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.
The football family’s warm embrace of our efforts
to recognise in perpetuity the rich history and the
contribution of many to our great game provides
compelling validation of our efforts.
In 2010 we will once again welcome a number of
new inductees, 12 in fact, a memorable game,
a legendary team, and a great club for their
contribution to the game.
When considering those who have been inducted
we also have the opportunity to elevate to a higher
level of recognition those whose contribution is
most significant. In this regard we will honour a
new Icon in 2010 and elevate a further 3 players
to the Legend status.
I hope that you may join us in celebrating the
induction of all new members to the Hall of Fame
at the gala function to be held again at Wrest
Point on Friday 2nd July 2010.
As always the event is designed to enable the
football family to come together and share,
remember and celebrate those who have given or
achieved in our game beyond just participating.
Football remains the heartbeat of so many of our
communities, particularly in winter; in this way
our game is more than just a sport or a game. It
is significant part of the social, commercial and
cultural fabric of Tasmania.
This year the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame
will be brought to us all by a team of dedicated
AFL Tasmania staff and our specialist consultants
to ensure the continued high quality of this
important recognition program for our sport and
our state.
AFL Tasmania’s General Manager Scott Wade will
lead the team that includes:
• Daniel Smedley – manages all historical research,
facility development and the production of all the
media articles, the souvenir record and newsletter
and database management.
• Andrea Goodwin and Bill Sorell – managing all
aspects of the induction function.
• Wendy Kennedy and Paul Yeomans –
development of the audio visual production at the
induction ceremony.
I encourage all members of Tasmania’s football
family to come along to this fantastic night and
I look forward to seeing you at the Tasmanian
Football Hall of Fame ceremony or at the football
in the near future.
Dominic Baker
Chairman
