Once again in 2010 the RECORD is<br />

planning to present five weeks worth of<br />

collectable publications for footy fans<br />

for the second Wrest Point State League<br />

finals series.<br />

In this first edition we have our popular<br />

articles, updates and club information<br />

and also special articles on the history of<br />

state football finals, a table of premiers<br />

and the awards that will be on offer.<br />

The games being played feature all 6<br />

teams competing for the title. North<br />

Hobart and North Launceston play in the<br />

elimination game, while the two Magpie<br />

teams and the mighty Clarence and<br />

Launceston will also have a qualifying<br />

final in what will be the longest known<br />

finals series in Australian senior football.<br />

Finally, have you heard about the<br />

innovation the Wrest Point State League<br />

is adopting to recognize it’s best and<br />

fairest player? Find out in this edition<br />

how the Tassie Medal count will be<br />

conducted in the pages of the Record<br />

over the final 3 weeks of the Finals Series<br />

VIEW FROM HERE | Leading TSL Clubs embrace change<br />

Recently AFL Tasmania has reviewed all levels<br />

and aspects of our game in Tasmania below the<br />

TSL competition.<br />

Indirectly this review should also have an impact<br />

on the TSL competition, specifically in terms of the<br />

attitude and approach to how TSL leaders wish<br />

to present and promote the TSL competition over<br />

the next decade.<br />

Overall the leaders of competitions below the TSL,<br />

in all three regions, are actually very supportive of<br />

the Wrest Point State League competition. What<br />

they aren’t supportive of is an attitude that the<br />

State League is the only important element of<br />

Tasmanian football.<br />

The leaders of football below the TSL want TSL<br />

clubs to display leadership within their given<br />

communities (or development zones). At the<br />

moment leaders of football competitions are<br />

sceptical about the agenda of TSL clubs and AFL<br />

Tasmania. They want to work in cooperation;<br />

however, at the moment they understandably<br />

can’t see what benefits their respective clubs will<br />

receive by doing so.<br />

The leaders of the NTFL, NTFA and SFL are very<br />

supportive of the decision of AFL Tasmania to<br />

remove the Club reserves competition, because<br />

this initiative has the potential to significantly<br />

benefit them. However, what they have witnessed<br />

publicly from some TSL clubs is very strong<br />

resistance to an initiative that would help them.<br />

They have also witnessed AFL Tasmania, in<br />

support of TSL clubs, implement a policy that<br />

demands the most talent young players in<br />

Tasmania must play at a TSL club if they wish to<br />

represent their State at any level. A number of<br />

these talented young players have never been<br />

part of a TSL club; however, AFL Tasmania is<br />

demanding that they play in the TSL competition.<br />

What the leaders of the NTFL, NTFA and SFL<br />

witness is an attitude of all take and no support in<br />

return from TSL clubs and AFL Tasmania.<br />

However, some TSL clubs are beginning to<br />

change, which is fantastic! A number of TSL<br />

clubs are starting to engage in a meaningful way<br />

with clubs below them. Some of the TSL clubs<br />

are beginning to embrace the notion of ‘giving<br />

something back’ to their ‘feeder clubs’.<br />

This level of leadership is what AFL Tasmania<br />

will continue to encourage and support. The TSL<br />

clubs and AFL Tasmania don’t need to apologise<br />

for wanting the best young players in Tasmania to<br />

be playing in the TSL competition – but – the TSL<br />

clubs have to give something back!<br />

The best support TSL clubs can provide to their<br />

‘feeder clubs’ is referral of players who aren’t<br />

good enough to be playing at the highest level in<br />

Tasmania.<br />

Congratulations to those TSL clubs leaders who<br />

are displaying leadership by understanding that<br />

by ‘giving something back’, you can genuinely<br />

engage with your ‘feeder clubs’ for your mutual<br />

benefit.<br />

Scott Stephens secured the RACT Player of the Year Award with a<br />

point in the Blues final game against Hobart giving him a 2 point<br />

victory over North Launceston’s Zane Murphy. The former Tassie<br />

Mariner and Devil is a triple premiership player and club captain<br />

at Launceston. A full report on Scott’s outstanding season will be<br />

After a hard-fought win against North<br />

Launceston on Saturday the Devonport<br />

Magpies play Glenorchy in the qualifying final<br />

at the Oval tonight. We wish the boys every<br />

success now we have reached “the business<br />

end” of the season.<br />

Both the Reserves and Under 18’s played<br />

their last games for the season last Saturday,<br />

and we thank them for their commitment and<br />

efforts throughout 2010.<br />

A big “Thank You” to Dean “Bull” Cullen who<br />

took charge of the Reserves, and the boys did<br />

an excellent job throughout the season facing<br />

at times what were insurmountable odds.<br />

Whilst it is disappointing we won’t have the<br />

Reserves next year I am sure the new Colts<br />

competition will provide an excellent and<br />

exciting pathway for aspiring young players<br />

who wish to play at the elite level.<br />

A very important game ahead of us on Sunday<br />

Hobart. The team played extremely well<br />

against Devonport last weekend and were<br />

unfortunate to lose by a small margin of 10<br />

points. With so much hinging on the outcome<br />

of today’s game, we are assured of an excellent<br />

game of football and hopefully a win which<br />

will take us further into the finals campaign.<br />

Playing away is always a tough call but the boys<br />

have shown they are more than competitive at<br />

all grounds. Well done boys on a hard fought<br />

TASSIE MEDAL | Recognising Tasmania’s best and fairest player<br />

The Wrest Point Tasmania State League<br />

presents a best and fairest medal for the<br />

competition’s leading player. The Tassie<br />

Medal was the name chosen in 2009 by<br />

the 10 competing clubs and the 2010<br />

champion will soon be crowned.<br />

The name ‘Tassie Medal’ was first used<br />

by the Australian National Football<br />

Council and was awarded to the best<br />

and fairest player at Australian National<br />

Carnivals which were contested<br />

between 1908 and 1988. The original<br />

Tassie Medal was named in honour of<br />

an Australian Football administrator whose<br />

name was Eric Tassie. Tasmania produced<br />

one winner of the original Tassie Medal in Terry<br />

Cashion. The Tasmanian Team of the Century<br />

rover and Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame Icon<br />

won the award at the Brisbane Carnival in 1950.<br />

The new Tasmanian version of the Tassie Medal<br />

is not named in honour of any individual, but is<br />

rather a common shortened colloquial name<br />

for our great island home. In that sense it is<br />

an appropriate choice and gives a modern less<br />

formal name reflective of the young players who<br />

make up the Wrest Point Tasmania State League.<br />

In a further innovation the first Tassie Medal count<br />

and announcement will be undertaken during the<br />

finals series. This method was successfully applied<br />

for the first time in 2009 when Devonport’s Kurt<br />

Heazlewood took the inaugural award.<br />

Commencing in Round 2 of the Finals Series<br />

the Record will publish the progressive top vote<br />

getters and we will reduce the number of players<br />

in contention each week. The winner of the<br />

award will be announced live on the big screen to<br />

all spectators in attendance at this year’s Wrest<br />

Point Tasmania State League Grand Final at<br />

either Bellerive Oval or Aurora Stadium.<br />

our great game | Tasmanian State Football Premierships<br />

Tasmanian football clubs have competed for a<br />

‘State Premiership’ on and off for around 100<br />

years. The governing leagues of Tasmanian<br />

football inaugurated an official State<br />

Premiership in 1909 when the Premier from<br />

the southern based TFL, namely Cananore (of<br />

Hobart), played against the northern based<br />

NTFA premiership team, Launceston.<br />

The State Premiership series became hugely<br />

popular from 1928 up until a dispute between<br />

the TFL and NTFA halted the series in 1951.<br />

The year 1928 was significant because the City<br />

Club (of Launceston) had recruited the high<br />

profile Victorian Roy Cazaly to coach and he<br />

duly delivered the first state title for a Northern<br />

Tasmanian club in his first season.<br />

The State Premiership series resumed in 1954<br />

after the North-West Football Union (NWFU)<br />

successfully gained equal status with the NTFA<br />

and TFL. Subsequently, the State Premiership<br />

became a contest between the Premiership<br />

team from the 3 major Tasmanian regions. The<br />

period 1954 to 1973 became the second golden<br />

era of Tasmanian state football such was the<br />

interest and success of the series of games that<br />

was conducted to culminate each season and<br />

determine the best team in Tasmania.<br />

However, new cracks began to appear in 1974,<br />

1977 and 1979 when the three leagues could<br />

not agree on the timing of the finals series or<br />

their commitment to the concept. Ultimately, the<br />

prolonged decline of the series in the early 1980s<br />

became a major catalyst for the formation of a<br />

Statewide League in 1986-87.<br />

The subsequent Tasmanian State League that<br />

was conducted up until the end of 2000 was<br />

very successful in attracting high quality players<br />

and coaches to Tasmania. The State League<br />

was very popular until a number of Clubs began<br />

to fail financially and were unable to continue in<br />

the competition.<br />

Regional football resumed in 2001 across<br />

Tasmania, but there was an inability to progress<br />

a State Premiership series for 8 long years<br />

despite constant speculation and a failed<br />

attempt in 2008.<br />

The State Premiership series has been disrupted<br />

on numerous occasions due to world wars, the<br />

influenza pandemic of 1919 and internecine<br />

disputes in the early 1950s, on and off in the<br />

1970s and 1980s and again in the last decade.<br />

Historically there is a correlation between the<br />

relative strength and interest in a Tasmanian<br />

State Finals series or league and the strength<br />

of Tasmanian football at representative level. In<br />

this regard we can expect if the new Wrest Point<br />

Tasmanian State League is able to gain traction<br />

amongst football players, corporate and media<br />

supporters and fans, that a new fourth era of<br />

Tasmanian State football will dawn and this will<br />

strengthen Tasmanian football.<br />

This series of articles will provide a summary of all<br />

Tasmanian State Premiership games and a table<br />

of premiers and runners-up. As well, there is a<br />

feature on the greatest State Premiership games<br />

from the 4 major eras starting with the 1920s<br />

and 1930s. A special ‘Fantasy Final’ series will<br />

also been provided to fill in some gaps in the<br />

history of Tasmanian State Football Premierships.<br />

TROPHIES | Wrest Point Tasmania State League Premiership 2010<br />

The Wrest Point Tasmania State League will<br />

issue a range of traditional trophies for the best<br />

teams, coaches, players and umpires in 2010.<br />

These include:<br />

FLAG - The traditional reward for the premier<br />

team is the provision of a Flag or Pennant. The<br />

presentation is made either on Grand Final day or<br />

at the commencement of the new season when<br />

the Flag is unfurled at the winning Club’s first<br />

home game of the season.<br />

CUP - There have been many Premiership Cups<br />

presented to winning teams in competitions<br />

across Tasmania. The VFL / AFL only commenced<br />

presenting the now famous AFL Premiership<br />

Cup in 1960, but in Tasmania a perpetual cup,<br />

called the Bulldog Cup, was presented for the<br />

Tasmanian State Premiership team from the very<br />

early days of the competition. The whereabouts<br />

of the Bulldog Cup is not known, but the<br />

distinctive trophies presented to all teams who<br />

participated in the first Tasmanian State League<br />

are firmly entrenched in the respective winner’s<br />

trophy cabinets. The Clarence FC won 5 state<br />

premiership cups during their golden era from<br />

1993 to 2000 and added to that in 2009 with the<br />

inaugural Wrest Point Tasmania State League.<br />

MEDALS - The issuing of medals to the players<br />

participating in the Grand Final commenced in<br />

the VFL / AFL in 1979, when the first Norm Smith<br />

Medal for best on ground was issued to Carlton’s<br />

Wayne Harmes. Up until 1982 medals were also<br />

issued to the players of the runner-up team, but in<br />

1981 Collingwood ruckman Peter Moore tossed<br />

his medal into the crowd in disgust at receiving<br />

his third successive runner up medal (Collingwood<br />

lost in 1979, 1980 and 1981). The VFL / AFL<br />

discontinued the practice of presenting runner<br />

up medals at that time. This year a Premiership<br />

Medal will be presented to the players and the<br />

participating umpires will be recognized. The<br />

best player on the ground will be awarded the<br />

prestigious Darrel Baldock Medal.<br />

GRASS ROOTS | Demons school holiday footy clinic<br />

After holding previous clinic’s in our<br />

development zones of Huonville and Cygnet,<br />

North Hobart FC presented a successful footy<br />

skills day at Geeveston. On a sunny winter’s<br />

day, 70 excited children aged 6 to 13 years<br />

attended and were mentored by North Hobart<br />

senior players Justin Veitch, Geoffrey Unsworth,<br />

Ben Free, Bayden Bryant and Club President<br />

Darryn Perry.<br />

The juniors were instructed on the basic AFL skills.<br />

Some of the children and parents had travelled<br />

from as far as Hobart and Bruny Island primary<br />

schools to be there. Five of the most promising<br />

children were presented gifts courtesy of North<br />

Hobart FC. There was a barbeque at the end of the<br />

day provided by the Kermandie Junior FC.<br />

Demons host Gala day between Cygnet and<br />

Sorell at Kermandie Oval<br />

North Hobart FC agreed to host a Gala day with<br />

our zone club Cygnet in our recruiting heartland<br />

of the Huon Valley community. North Hobart<br />

had a bye in the TSL roster on this weekend and<br />

because of a large number of injuries to our<br />

feeder club we provided several players on one<br />

week temporary permits for Cygnet under 18’s,<br />

reserves and seniors.<br />

We also provided support staff for Cygnet that<br />

included President, Darryn Perry performed as<br />

senior runner, Club Coach, Clinton Brown gave<br />

up his free weekend to act as line coach, several<br />

Board members filled various roles of Interchange<br />

Stewards, Umpire security. A large number of<br />

North Hobart supporters travelled down to the<br />

match wearing their red and blue colours.<br />

Former North 2003 premiership, player Andrew<br />

Cox helped out with two simultaneous Auskick’s<br />

games for children aged 6-13 as a curtain raiser<br />

event before the senior game This was a great<br />

success and we had 40 plus juniors participate.<br />

The Auskick games were sponsored by Mitre 10<br />

stores in Cygnet and Geeveston.<br />

The weather was great on a day where there was<br />

only one senior game of footy held in the Huon<br />

and about 1500 attended. North Hobart players,<br />

Tom Nichols, James Faulkner and Jarryd Atkins<br />

all played well for Cygnet in their 52 point victory<br />

against Sorell. Many thanks to Cygnet’s Brett<br />

Direen who has a great “can do” work attitude<br />

and makes events like this happen.<br />

Often in the past the North Hobart club had<br />

promised development support to our feeder<br />

clubs in the Huon and followed by no action. This<br />

year because of our hands-on president, Darryn<br />

Perry and our proactive football department we<br />

are now starting to deliver on these promises and<br />

build excellent relationships.<br />

YOUNG GUNS | A week in the life<br />

This year the Tassie Mariners took on<br />

Queensland in Round 1 of the NAB AFL National<br />

Championship. Big ruckman Andrew ‘Flipper’<br />

Phillips took time out to provide an insight into<br />

what goes on in the lead up to the game.<br />

Monday - Medical check-ups, weights sessions,<br />

touch work and team meeting at Bellerive. These<br />

go from 5-7pm. I arrive slightly late due to work,<br />

this often happens as I am an apprentice builder<br />

and we can be sent just about anywhere in<br />

southern Tasmania. My work hours are 7:30am<br />

till 4pm Monday to Friday. Work is very good to<br />

me however, allowing me days off for games and<br />

training that involve travelling interstate or up to<br />

Launceston. I text coach Mathew Armstrong letting<br />

him know I would be late, otherwise he would have<br />

probably given me 400s to do.<br />

Tuesday - Weights and stretching session at<br />

Bellerive and pool session. I did not have time to<br />

get the weights done on Monday so I did a modified<br />

session with fitness coach Dave Kinsella before<br />

going to Clarence YMCA pool for a pool conditioning<br />

and recovery session.<br />

Wednesday - Full squad training in Launceston. I<br />

have to get off work early to catch the bus up to<br />

Aurora stadium. We stop off at Campbell Town<br />

for a stretch and Subway arriving at Aurora to<br />

train with everyone in the Academy. After training<br />

(and an ice bath for recovery which I hate!) Dogga<br />

reads out the team to travel to Sydney to play<br />

Queensland. I’m named starting ruckman and<br />

can’t wait to play.<br />

Thursday - Personal beach recovery session at a<br />

beach near Lauderdale. I then go to Lauderdale<br />

training to show my face around the club and see<br />

my club team mates before heading home to cook<br />

up some pasta.<br />

Friday - We fly out to Sydney, but then we are<br />

stuck in mini busses for 2 hours as the GPS did<br />

not work properly. Or the person using put in the<br />

wrong place?!?! We have a quick touch work<br />

and stretching session before a team meal and<br />

meeting. Before going to bed we have to have our<br />

urine analysed to see how hydrated we are. It’s<br />

been a long day!<br />

Saturday - Game day. Good win by the boys and I<br />

go OK taking a few marks around the ground. It’s a<br />

bit of a rush to make it to the airport but get there<br />

OK. We are told to eat as much as we can but<br />

healthy stuff!<br />

Sunday - Early weights and recovery session. We<br />

are given a protein snack after a weights and<br />

stretching circuit then hop in the water for 5-10<br />

minutes. It’s full on but professional, so it’s a good<br />

way of doing footy if you want to improve.<br />

THE WHISTLE BLOWER | Field Umpires lead with experience and youth<br />

This year a TSL Squad of 30 Field Umpires was<br />

chosen from the 3 major Tasmanian umpiring<br />

associations, including: 16 from Hobart; 8 from<br />

Launceston and 6 from the North West Coast.<br />

This Squad has officiated in TSL Senior and<br />

Under 18 matches during the season. The senior<br />

finals panel for this week is very experienced<br />

and includes last year’s TSL Grand Final umpires<br />

Matt Clarke and Nick Foot. Ex VFL Umpires,<br />

Sam Cure, Shaun Gleeson and Ben Lehner will<br />

also be officiating. Ray Donoghue is the most<br />

experienced umpire involved having umpired<br />

the last Grand Final of the previous State Wide<br />

League in 2000. Joel Harris, Nick Saltmarsh and<br />

Sam Rainbird will all be officiating in their first TSL<br />
