More Than
a Place
Do Ho Suh’s “Fallen Star” is the 18th permanent
sculpture commissioned by UC San Diego Stuart
Collection. It reflects Suh’s on-going exploration of
themes around the idea of home, cultural displacement,
the perception of our surroundings, and how one
constructs a memory of a space. It was installed atop
the Jacobs School of Engineering in November 2011.
Funding was made possible through private donations
and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts
program for Access to Artistic Excellence.

UC San Diego is more than a place, it’s
a state of mind. Hence the title for this year’s
Annual Report covering July 1, 2011 to June
30, 2012. But what do we mean by that?
The modern English word college is derived
from the Latin root "collegium," which meant
community, society, or guild. I think most of
us would agree that that sense of college
community continues long after graduation. The University
becomes for alumni a state of mind, a way of continuing to
access the intellectual power of the place, and the accumulated
experience of other alumni in an increasingly demanding world.
We have accepted the challenge of keeping the connections
between alumni, and between alumni and UC San Diego,
vibrant and energized. As an alumnus, I am proud of the fact
that we have reshaped ourselves over the last few years to
become a resource for continuing education, for interconnections
through our burgeoning professional groups and our growth
in online communications, and as a lodestone for career
development. We are in the midst of re-envisioning UCSD
Alumni as a resource where hyper-connectedness is valued and
valuable. We embrace alumni as our partners, not as customers.
Alumni are UC San Diego’s most permanent constituency.
The perceived value of our degrees rises and falls with
the intellectual strength of the University. And so we have
a stake in this extraordinary place, as no one else does.
That is why we celebrate UC San Diego as a state of mind.
When we privilege it in this manner, we privilege all alumni.
We hope you will agree with us that this work, the work of
this last year, is invaluable. Together, our journey continues.
LinkedIn Partnership
In July 2011, UC San Diego became one of 12 universities—
and the only one within the University of California system—
to start a unique relationship with LinkedIn, the world’s largest
online professional network. Through LinkedIn’s College Pilot
Program, UCSD Alumni, the university’s alumni association,
is utilizing the website’s capabilities to chart the number of
graduates (and the top 10 most influential companies) in
various industries across the country—including entertainment,
law and marketing, among others. By digging deeper into
the newfound data, UCSD Alumni is better connecting alumni
within their respective fields.
UC San Diego Inspiring Minds
Inspiring Minds, takes the University’s
nationally-recognized faculty and alumni
leaders to key regions across the country
to share their cutting-edge research and
professional accomplishments. Now in its
seventh year, 400 alumni and friends attended
four events in San Diego, San Francisco and
Silicon Valley, with topics ranging from the
mysteries of black matter by physics Professor
Alison Coil, and the creatures in the deep
oceans by marine biology Professor Greg
Rouse, to how our social networks affect us
with Professor James Fowler. We encourage
you to attend an Inspiring Minds program
near you. You can learn more at alumni.ucsd.
UCSD Alumni’s LinkedIn network is over 15,000 strong,
with graduates concentrated in the area of computer software,
biotechnology, research, information technology and financial
services. This information has enabled UCSD Alumni to connect
with influential alumni in numerous industries. In the future, it
will allow UCSD Alumni to offer other networking events that
focus on entertainment, science, law and fields based on the
demand for each in specific regions.
Volunteers
More than 700 alumni volunteers served as event planners,
webinar hosts, career advisers, student recruiters,
scholarship application readers and more. Also, 56
alumni personally called admitted students as part
of the Alumni Calling Campaign to congratulate them
and answer any questions they may have about the
UC San Diego and life on campus. Seventy alumni had
reviewed scholarship applications and helped award
scholarship funds to deserving students. Get involved
Regional Outreach
The Regional Outreach and Engagement team, including the Alumni Discovery
Initiative, aims to engage thousands of alumni, parents and friends of
UC San Diego in meaningful one-on-one interactions, resulting in a greater
connection with the University. The four-member team contacted and secured
interviews in San Diego, Los Angeles and the Bay Area. These officers live
full-time in their region and return to San Diego once per quarter to meet with
campus colleagues. The Alumni Discovery Initiative, comprised of 22 current
students, engages alumni with UC San Diego, verifying and updating information,
marketing key campus and alumni initiatives, and identifying special-interest
and affinity-engagement opportunities. In FY2011-12, team members contacted
26,524 alumni and met with 1,655. The meetings resulted in 432 donors
making gifts to causes and programs at UC San Diego.
Alumni Clubs
Volunteer-led regional alumni clubs grew significantly with new groups
springing up in locations as far afield as Australia, Philadelphia and Taiwan.
Clubs saw an increase in alumni events, a 50 percent increase from the
previous year, with 149 events attended by 2,921 alumni.
These regional clubs (28 and counting around the world), help alumni
connect to each other and the University with opportunities for social and
professional networking. Regional alumni clubs hosted welcome events for
UC San Diego’s newest graduates, the annual Summer Send-Off Picnic for
incoming students and families, career rights, community service activities,
recreational outings and more.
Two new regional clubs were added in Philadelphia, Penn. and Boulder,
Alumni gifts support many areas of campus including scholarships and fellowships
for ambitious and highly motivated students; seed money for new research and
innovative programs; and faculty recruitment and retention efforts.

Student Philanthropy
UCSD Alumni leads major student philanthropic efforts through the Student
Foundation's Give. Invest. Gain. and Senior Class Gift campaigns. By creating
innovative campus-wide partnerships with college, academic and university
departments, UCSD Alumni inspires a culture of giving back so as to build
a sustainable donor pipeline, and identify and cultivate leaders in the
UC San Diego community. Through the combined efforts of the Give. Invest.
Gain. and Senior Class Gift campaigns in FY2011-12, 2,159 students elected
to support student scholarships and other initiatives at UC San Diego. This is
an impressive increase from only 67 seniors who did the same in 2008.
Loyalty Society
Alumni support is vital to the
success of UC San Diego and
its students. This year, more than
1,450 new Alumni Associates
and Benefactors made a gift
to UCSD Alumni, generating
$110,225. Donors at the
$500 (or more) giving level
are recognized as Alumni
Benefactors, while donors at
the $50 giving level are
acknowledged as Alumni
Associates. There was an
increase of 25 percent in the
total amount of dollars contributed.
These annual gifts support
UCSD Alumni programs and
scholarships for current students.
Alumni Associates and
Benefactors receive special
privileges, in addition to the
perks all alumni receive.
Chancellor’s Associates
Donors to Chancellor’s Associates are campus insiders
and among the first to learn of UC San Diego’s achievements
and discoveries from distinguished faculty and
campus leaders. Gifts to this area provide the Chancellor
with the flexibility to fund initiatives and opportunities
as they arise, while supporting ongoing programs, such
as undergraduate scholarships, and faculty achievement
awards, that recognize the creativity and effectiveness
of our extraordinary professors. Alumni continue to
comprise 50 percent of Chancellor’s Associates donors.
For the first time in 25 years, several changes were
made to the Chancellor’s Associates Program, including
the increase of program’s minimum giving level to
$2,500; establishing a tiered privileges structure with
new privileges; the creation of a $25,000 giving level;
and rebranding and realigning of the $1,500 giving
level as Chancellor’s Club. These changes provided
an opportunity to expand recognition opportunities
and encourage upgraded giving.
More than 1,200 guests attended 13 Chancellor’s
Associates events including the Colloquium series and
Faculty Excellence Awards, as well as new events like
the Nobel Circle Dinner featuring Executive Vice
Chancellor Suresh Subramani and the Fellow’s Circle
Dinner featuring Alan Houston, provost of Eleanor
Roosevelt College.

Scholarship
Program
Private support to UC San Diego has the power to transform lives and
benefit entire communities. UCSD Alumni has proudly supported
undergraduate scholarships since 1994. Generous donations from
alumni and sponsorship of the annual Alumni Celebration have increased
the alumni scholarship endowment to $3.8 million, which provide funding
to Regents Scholarships and Alumni Leadership Scholarships.
In addition to financial need, the Alumni Leadership Scholarship is awarded
to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding academic and community
leadership while at UC San Diego. During FY2011-12, UCSD Alumni
awarded 36 Alumni Leadership Scholarships valued at $2,000 each.
The Alumni Leadership Scholarship Program has raised $2 million dollars
and 30 alumni have established endowed scholarships for their families’
legacy. Three scholarship endowments were added in FY2011-12.
This scholarship program, based on a matching gift model utilizing UCSD
Alumni’s scholarship endowments, has provided $416,000 in scholarship
funding to 137 students, as of June 30, 2012. To date, 95 Alumni
Leadership Scholars have gone on to graduate from UC San Diego
About Us
UCSD Alumni: A Closer Look
UCSD Alumni, a member of the integrated Alumni and Constituent Engagement team,
which includes Annual Giving and Student Affairs Development, represents more than
150,000 alumni at the forefront of the sciences, business, research, the arts, social
innovation and political service in California, throughout the nation and around
the world. By fostering meaningful connections, we help to forge lifelong, mutually
beneficial relationships between alumni, students and the University to ensure that
UC San Diego—and every alumnus—will always remain world class.
Financial Overview
Alumni endowments continue to generate funds for scholarships and innovative
programs for deserving students, alumni and the campus community. Since the first
scholarships were awarded in 1995, UCSD Alumni has supported 550 students
with $1,136,996 of critically needed scholarships.
As of June 30, 2012, market value of UCSD Alumni endowments has reached
$6.5 million. Scholarship endowments constitute $4.5 million, representing named or
designated alumni scholarship funds, the Black Alumni Fund and Student Foundation
Funds. The operating endowment, valued at $2 million, consists mainly of gifts made
through the UCSD Alumni loyalty program.
Financial resources to develop and deliver alumni programs and services are primarily
provided by the University to the Office of Alumni and Constituent Engagement. The
budget is further supported by funds generated by UCSD Alumni. The 2011-12
operating budget was $7.1 million, of which $564,760 was generated by the
Alumni Association.
