GENERAL DETECTIVES REORGANIZATION
By: Detective Sgt. Frank Scalise
In April, the General Detectives Unit was reorganized with the intention of becoming more efficient. There
were several changes made.
The Fraud Team and the Targeted Crimes Team were placed under the same sergeant (currently Sergeant
Cummings). This is due to the likelihood that many prolific fraud suspects are some of the same people that
the pro-active Targeted Crimes Team focuses on. The two teams will both benefit from greater interaction.
The North and South Property Crimes teams were combined into a single team responsible for property
crimes citywide.
Detective Ben Estes and Detective Sheri Wilson were assigned to a newly formed Child Physical Abuse
Team. These detectives work solely on child physical abuse and neglect. Previously, physical abuse and
neglect cases were assigned to any of the dozen or so property crimes detectives. By forming this new
team, the intention is that the two detectives assigned will develop a much higher level of expertise in this
type of investigation. It will also allow for patrol officers and outside agencies such as Child Protective
Services (CPS) to have a consistent point of contact in the investigative division. Both detectives have
already attended specialized training and are carrying full case loads.
SPD TV TO AIR IN JULY
The first edition of the department’s SPD TV program will air during the month of July on City
Cable Channel 5. The program on “Use of Force” was recently taped at City Hall. Corporal Dave
Adams served as host and spoke with Corporal Jeff Schaal and Officer Rob Boothe about how the
department trains its officers in the use of force. The program will play 18 times during the month.
Times for playback can be found in the City Cable 5 schedule on the city’s website at
www.spokanecity.org as well as the police department’s website at www.spokanepolice.org.
Each month SPD TV will discuss a different topic in the hopes of educating citizens on our tactics,
training and special units.
