Page 2 SPOKANE FOUR OFFICERS RECEIVE AWARDS FROM THE SPOKANE COUNTY TRAFFIC SAFETY COMMISSION By: Hilary Thompson Four Spokane Police Officers were among 30 recipients throughout the region to receive awards for their work with traffic safety. Officers were recognized from the Spokane Police Department, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, the Spokane Valley Police Department, the Cheney Police Department, and the Liberty Lake Police Department at the Spokane County Traffic Safety Commission Annual Award Ceremony for law enforcement on June 5th. Officer Kenny Applewhaite was recognized for his work in Child Passenger Safety as a Certified Car Seat Technician for five years. Both Corporal Robbie Dashiell and Officer Wayne Downing were recognized for their work creating and volunteering to be on the DUI Team. They both re-structured their work shifts to place emphasis when incidents or impaired driving are the highest. Sergeant Rick Dobrow was recognized for his devotion to traffic safety through the years and his participation in the Spokane County Traffic Safety Commission. Ofc. Ken Applewhaite Cpl. Robbie Dashiel Sgt. Rick Dobrow Ofc. Wayne Downing SPD GETS NEW RESERVE OFFICERS The Spokane Police Department welcomes five new reserve officers who recently graduated from the Reserve Academy. By: Hilary Thompson Reserve Officers meet the same qualifications as an entry-level officer and attend a 256-hour academy. After completion, they are fully commissioned with the same authority as a police officer, while on duty. They are required to put in 16 hours per month and attend monthly training sessions as well as maintain proficiency in firearms, defensive tactics and patrol procedures. Page 3 SPOKANE’S NIGHT OUT AGAINST CRIME It’s time once again to send a message to the criminal element in Spokane! Let’s give crime a going away party! By: Maurice Vulcano Join Spokane C.O.P.S. Tuesday, August 7 to make a stand in support of our law enforcement officers and to show the criminals that we are working together. In 2006, over 6,000 Spokane citizens stepped up to this challenge! The Spokane Police Department needs your help in preventing crime. One way is to join forces with your neighbors. Do you know them? Do you talk to them? Invite them to this year’s National Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, August 7th! The first 200 registered parties or meetings will receive a full color, 18” x 24” National Night Out yard sign and crime-prevention literature from Spokane C.O.P.S., available for pick-up at your nearest neighborhood C.O.P.S. Substation beginning July 16th. You can also join Spokane C.O.P.S. at their National Night Out Kick-Off Rally in Riverfront Park, Monday, August 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for late registration and to pick up your National Night Out yard sign. National Night Out is an extraordinary way to build neighborhood unity and strengthen community policing partnerships.
