2 BUILD COLLECTIVE<br />

STAKEHOLDING The Foundation<br />

mobilises sustainable financial and nonfinancial<br />

resources from among business,<br />

urban administration and education<br />

departments, media and citizen leaders.<br />

Programs are created by contributors and all<br />

stakeholders in the project, who have a direct<br />

interest in the program’s success.<br />

3 FACILITATE MENTORING by<br />

identifying mentors to provide critical support<br />

for change management initiatives. Idea<br />

mentors contribute new ideas; program<br />

mentors help implement and add substance<br />

to the idea; network mentors such as UNICEF<br />

speed the programmes progress by using their<br />

network to identify partners and skill sets;<br />

resource mentors contribute manpower,<br />

money or material.<br />

THE PROGRAMS<br />

Three programs currently define the work<br />

of the foundation.<br />

THE CAP, OR CHILD AND POLICE PROJECT<br />

CAP REACHES 4250 children; it aims to<br />

rehabilitate child workers by turning them<br />

into students. It brings together citizens, the<br />

City Police, corporates and policy makers,<br />

building consensus on the far-reaching<br />

benefits of getting children away from<br />

worksites and into school. The approach<br />

aims to supplement rather than supplant<br />

their families’ income. Children enter the<br />

school system through five Bridge schools,<br />

which also serve as community resource<br />

centres. Parents, teachers, employers are all<br />

involved as stakeholders, and the schools<br />

have developed well beyond their original<br />

conceptions. The forward vision: to sustain<br />

the movement even after the schools are<br />

weaned from DRF-CAP support; to partner<br />

a process of up-scaling and replication; to<br />

emerge as an example of best practices for<br />

protecting child labour through schooling.<br />
