Workshop Abstract
Oil and gas companies are faced today with the so-called “two-humped demographics curve”, with a high
population of high expertise seniors soon to leave while onboarding more junior staff to replace them. It is also
now well known that women represent a growing part of this crew change and will play a major role, not only in the
energy sector as in the UAE, 70.8 percent of students attending university are women* and the country’s vision will
be shared to show how it builds on these new talents.
Generations or gender differences are only the visible branches of the diversity tree, whose roots support a wealth
of talents and breadth of expectations. Capturing these expectations is key to attract, develop, and retain, as well
as acknowledging experienced staff’s motivations to ensure proper knowledge transfer and transition. In a fast
changing world, some progress has been made already to adapt and accelerate the development and career of the
new diverse generations. Sharing how it is perceived in reality, in the field, the core of the oil industry, is also key to
continuous improvement: what are the obstacles that have been overcome, what are the remaining ones, especially
in the GCC?
Business management also comes with aspiration to develop a multi-skilled, competent workforce that will be
fully committed to efficiently manage and optimise more and more complex projects, in a safe and harm-free
environment. During the breakout session, we will consider the roles of the different stakeholders in bridging those
expectations, from the role of the employee and education to the one of leadership and policy. Building on the
former sessions, Q&A and success stories will be shared through the Executive Roundtable.
The main objectives of this workshop are to discuss the required strategies to ensure business growth and
sustainability while helping everyone to reach their full potential, and to promote ideas and visions of feasible
professional success for all.
In summary the scope and aim of this workshop will be to discuss the following:
• Painting the diversity challenge, the two-hump demographics curve challenge, and the need to accelerate
development of the graduates, with potential for women.
• Highlighting the different expectations between old and new generations and investigating how to bridge them
through the eyes and roles of all stakeholders.
• Women in leadership in the oil and gas industry–challenges and success stories
• How governments, companies, and professional organisations address those challenges and make sure they
retain the talents they developed. What are the lessons learnt and new strategies to be developed?
• The role of education and professional learning to prepare for a diverse work environment in the petroleum
industry.
WORKSHOP
Bridging the Expectation Gap
Sponsorship Support
Sponsorship support helps offset the cost
of producing workshops and allows SPE
to keep the attendance price within reach
of operations-level individuals, those
who benefit most from these technical
workshops.
Sponsors benefit both directly and
indirectly by having their names
associated with a specific workshop.
While SPE prohibits any type of
commercialism within the conference
hall itself, the society recognises that
sponsoring companies offer valuable
information to attendees outside the
technical sessions.
Sponsorship Categories
Sponsorships are offered on a first come
basis. Please contact SPE to verify the
availability of a particular sponsorship.
Existing sponsors have the opportunity to
renew the same level of sponsorship for
annual workshops.
• Platinum Sponsorship
The oil and gas industry’s fast changing demographics created by the influx of a young generation of industry professionals and an
ageing, experienced crew present a new set of challenges that need to be fast transformed into opportunities. Increasing awareness
on the expectations of both generations as well as the employing companies and contrasting them with the realities is a first step
towards addressing this issue. The fact that the industry is regionally undergoing accelerated growth plans to meet rising energy
demands further compounds the need for timely action. The case for embracing diversity in all its manifestations becomes a key
strategic choice enabling the attraction, development, and retention of talent.
This session will address the following:
• Role of Leadership–What can leadership do today to influence the roles of the different stakeholders in bridging the
expectations gap (gender/generations) and embracing diversity within the company/workforce and how do they impact
organisational core values?
• Role of Policy–With increasing globalisation the definition of “difference” is becoming increasingly complex; how in
organisations do we find appropriate measures, approaches, or systems to create a truly diverse and inclusive environment?
How do we translate these into global contexts?
• Role of Education–How do we leverage sustainability and the community to invest in people for future leadership and society?
• Role of Employees–How can the employers and employees work to influence social change?
1215–1330 hours Luncheon and Prayers
1330–1430 hours Session 3: Executive Roundtable Discussion
Session Chairs: Abdullah Al Shami, Petroleum Institute; Janine Lau-Pope, NPCC
In this interactive roundtable session, you will have the opportunity to share your thoughts on a variety of topics pertaining to
diversity with our senior executive panel. Topics to be discussed include:
• Gender–Why are there so few female executives? What are the challengeils? How do you overcome them?
• Diversity Challenge–Paint the current diversity picture (age, nationality, gender) how would you address these?
• Expectation–What are the expectations of both sides? Bridging the expectation gap: how the industry can adapt to meet the
expectations?
• The role of education and professional learning–How to prepare for a diverse work environment in the petroleum industry?
• The role of policy in enabling the diversity agenda
This is an opportunity to share with today’s decision makers the progress that has been made and what issues still remain.
Following the roundtable feedback, there will be a panel session with the executives to share the roundtable’s conclusions and
areas to focus on going forward.
