Chapter 4: Configuring ReportNet
After you install one or more ReportNet components on your computer, you must configure
them to work in your reporting environment. Initially, default property settings chosen by Cognos
are used to configure the components. However, you may want to change these default settings
if existing conditions make the default choices inappropriate, or to better suit your environment.
For all Windows and most UNIX installations, use Cognos Configuration to configure your
settings. However, the console attached to the UNIX computer on which you are installing
ReportNet may not support a Java-based graphical user interface. You must then manually edit
the crnstartup.xml file in the crn_location/configuration directory, and then run Cognos
Configuration in silent mode.
For all types of installations, some configuration tasks are required. For example, you must
configure your Web server and specify the database connection properties to the content store.
If you distribute ReportNet components across several computers, some additional
configuration tasks are required to ensure that the components can communicate with each
other. The order in which you configure and start the computers is also important.
Other configuration tasks are optional and depend on your reporting environment. Use these
optional configuration tasks to customize your configuration so that ReportNet easily integrates
into your existing reporting environment. For example, you can add resources to your
environment, such as configuring ReportNet to use an authentication provider. Also, you can
deliver Cognos content using an SAP Enterprise Portal by configuring Cognos Portal Services.
Start Cognos Configuration
Use the configuration tool, Cognos Configuration, to configure ReportNet components, or to
start and stop ReportNet services.
The account under which ReportNet runs must have access to all required resources, such as
printers and Web servers. For example, on Windows, to print reports using a network printer, the
account must already have access to the network printer, or you must assign a logon account to
the ReportNet service. You can configure the ReportNet service to use a special user account
by selecting the Cognos ReportNet service from the list of services shown in the Services
window in Windows.
You should start Cognos Configuration in the last page of the installation wizard on Windows
and UNIX only if additional setup is not required. For example, if you use an Oracle or DB2
database server for the content store, we recommend that you copy the JDBC drivers to the
appropriate location before you start the configuration tool.
To start Cognos Configuration in interactive mode:
• On UNIX, go to the crn_location/bin directory and then type
crconfig.sh
• On Windows, from the Start menu, click Programs, Cognos ReportNet, Cognos
Configuration.
Configuring Single Computer Installations
If you install all ReportNet server components on one computer, some configuration tasks are
required so that ReportNet works in your reporting environment.
Additional configuration tasks are required if the Windows modelling tool, Framework Manager,
is installed on a separate computer.
