<strong>Design</strong> Standards and <strong>Guidelines</strong><br />

19. Lighting<br />

Proper downtown lighting fixtures that<br />

represent the design theme can make<br />

a big difference to the overall design,<br />

feel and functioning of the area.<br />

Streetscape lights should provide most<br />

of the night time lighting for downtown<br />

buildings.<br />

Standards<br />

(Required by <strong>City</strong> Code)<br />

Each site shall include a Lighting Plan<br />

that is designed to discourage crime,<br />

enhance safety, and prevent glare onto<br />

adjacent properties. For the <strong>Downtown</strong><br />

Village Zone, all lighting fixtures and<br />

lamps are to follow the design theme<br />

for the <strong>Downtown</strong> area. The following<br />

regulations are to be followed:<br />

1. For all private streets and<br />

pathways, within a development, a<br />

light fixture shall be placed every<br />

sixty (60’) feet;<br />

2. <strong>Design</strong> theme/style; all lighting<br />

design is to be Turn of the 20 th<br />

Century, as outlined in the<br />

<strong>Downtown</strong> 2020 Action Plan.<br />

3. Dark-sky, shielded style lighting<br />

fixtures are to be used throughout<br />

the <strong>Downtown</strong> Village Zone.<br />

4. For all other lighting regulations,<br />

please refer to Chapter 10-15-44 of<br />

the <strong>City</strong> Code.<br />

<strong>Guidelines</strong><br />

(Recommendations)<br />

1. Fixtures should not obscure any<br />

building ornamentation.<br />

2. Fluorescent lights should not be<br />

used.<br />

3. Lights may be used to highlight<br />

ornamentation, window displays,<br />

entrances and signs.<br />

4. Lighting the entire façade is<br />

inappropriate and discouraged.<br />
