Reasons to Recycle<br />
• Saves natural resources (i.e. water, trees,<br />
etc.)<br />
• Saves energy (90% less energy to recycle<br />
an aluminum can)<br />
• Reduces need for landfill space<br />
• Lower need for use of toxic chemicals
Present Conditions<br />
• In <strong>Spanish</strong> <strong>Fork</strong> 11,500 tons per year are hauled<br />
to the Transfer Station at $28.00 per ton.<br />
• City pays contractor about $30,000 per month to<br />
haul solid waste to Transfer Station.<br />
• Purchase of new customer containers 500 per<br />
year @62.50 = $31,250<br />
• Rate per can is $7.90 per can
Current Status of <strong>Recycling</strong> in<br />
<strong>Spanish</strong> <strong>Fork</strong><br />
• Take items to be recycled to various locations<br />
– Metal-Western States Metal-Provo<br />
• Aluminum, steel, copper<br />
– Paper-Bin at City Office parking lot-SF<br />
• News paper, magazines, phone books, junk mail<br />
– Plastic grocery bags-WalMart<br />
– Yard Waste-old city dump<br />
Presently there is no place to take plastic containers or<br />
glass
Options<br />
• 1. Leave as is<br />
• 2. Go to mandatory recycling<br />
• 3. Go to voluntary recycling<br />
• 4. Other?
Survey Results<br />
On Line Survey Fall 2005<br />
• The numbers for the recycle project are:<br />
– Mandatory = 241<br />
– Voluntary = 197<br />
– Don’t t Want = 119<br />
– 64 people voted for both Mandatory and Voluntary<br />
• 493 total votes<br />
• These numbers do include multiple votes per<br />
house, if, for example, a husband and wife<br />
voted.
Mandatory <strong>Recycling</strong><br />
• Costs<br />
– Present garbage bill = $7.90 per month<br />
– Monthly pickup cost for recycle=$4.00 per month<br />
(2 year old price estimate)<br />
– Purchase 7900 Cans=$493,750<br />
• How do we pay for the new cans?<br />
• Include in rates?<br />
• $62.50 per can with a one year buy out $5.21 per month<br />
– Presently 1730 homes have two cans already

Mandatory <strong>Program</strong><br />
• Sandy City is seeing an 8-8.5% 8 8.5% reduction in<br />
waste stream.<br />
• At 8.5% <strong>Spanish</strong> <strong>Fork</strong> would reduce the waste<br />
stream by 980 tons per year (@28.00 per ton =<br />
$27,440 reduction in yearly Solid Waste District<br />
bill<br />
• Equals about $0.27 per month average savings<br />
for entire city
Voluntary <strong>Recycling</strong><br />
• Costs<br />
– Present garbage bill = $7.90 per month<br />
– Monthly pickup cost for recycle=$5.00 per<br />
