• Plastic Coated Milk and Juice Containers

Items you CANNOT recycle in
Curbside Recycling Program
• Glass
• Yard Waste
• Clothing
• Small Appliances
• Napkins, Paper Towels, Toilet Paper
• Food and Food Wrappings

Reasons to Recycle
• Saves natural resources (i.e. water, trees,
etc.)
• Saves energy (90% less energy to recycle
an aluminum can)
• Reduces need for landfill space
• Lower need for use of toxic chemicals

Present Conditions
• In Spanish Fork 11,500 tons per year are hauled
to the Transfer Station at $28.00 per ton.
• City pays contractor about $30,000 per month to
haul solid waste to Transfer Station.
• Purchase of new customer containers 500 per
year @62.50 = $31,250
• Rate per can is $7.90 per can

Current Status of Recycling in
Spanish Fork
• Take items to be recycled to various locations
– Metal-Western States Metal-Provo
• Aluminum, steel, copper
– Paper-Bin at City Office parking lot-SF
• News paper, magazines, phone books, junk mail
– Plastic grocery bags-WalMart
– Yard Waste-old city dump
Presently there is no place to take plastic containers or
glass

Options
• 1. Leave as is
• 2. Go to mandatory recycling
• 3. Go to voluntary recycling
• 4. Other?

Survey Results
On Line Survey Fall 2005
• The numbers for the recycle project are:
– Mandatory = 241
– Voluntary = 197
– Don’t t Want = 119
– 64 people voted for both Mandatory and Voluntary
• 493 total votes
• These numbers do include multiple votes per
house, if, for example, a husband and wife
voted.

Mandatory Recycling
• Costs
– Present garbage bill = $7.90 per month
– Monthly pickup cost for recycle=$4.00 per month
(2 year old price estimate)
– Purchase 7900 Cans=$493,750
• How do we pay for the new cans?
• Include in rates?
• $62.50 per can with a one year buy out $5.21 per month
– Presently 1730 homes have two cans already

Reduction in Waste Stream to
Transfer Station
Mandatory Program
• Sandy City is seeing an 8-8.5% 8 8.5% reduction in
waste stream.
• At 8.5% Spanish Fork would reduce the waste
stream by 980 tons per year (@28.00 per ton =
$27,440 reduction in yearly Solid Waste District
bill
• Equals about $0.27 per month average savings
for entire city
