AAPI Journal • March 2009 Treasurer’s Report by Narendra Kumar, M.D. It is my privilege to report that the state of our finances continues to be strong, and we are making every effort to maintain and improve the current financial status. This requires the help and support of our constituency. As AAPI Treasurer, I will fulfill my promise to keep AAPI finances in proper order by maintaining fiscal stability, accountability and enhance financial health. It is important to keep financial matters transparent to the membership. This requires cautious spending and enhanced revenues especially during this current economic climate. I am closely monitoring financial activities at the AAPI National Executive Office, and I am keeping our President appraised on the financial status at a regular interval, Narendra Kumar, M.D. Treasurer, AAPI and the Executive Committee at our monthly teleconferences. A detailed report will be presented at the Governing Body meeting in Boston and at our General Body meeting in Orlando. FEATURE AAPI Journal • March 2009 Reflections on the Second Indo-US Summit by Prasad Srinivasan, M.D. Prasad Srinivasan, M.D. Secretary, AAPI It was a great second act. The second Indo-US summit, held from January 2nd to 4th, 2009 lived up to its expectations. It was fortunate that the weather in New Delhi was very pleasant and the fog did not deter the enthusiasm of the summit. At the press conference on the afternoon of the 2nd, President Dr. Sanku Rao, outlined to a well attended press conference our goals and expectations. As Secretary I shared the podium and had the opportunity to express my thoughts as well. The Indian press had a lot of questions for both of us. It was a good platform to showcase AAPI. The meeting on that evening was on strategic planning. The healthcare landscape of India was looked into at length. A physician’s perspective was given by Dr. N. Saini, the Hon. Joint secretary IMA. The research done by Mckinsey & Co was presented by Dr. Mandar Vaidya, Senior Partner, Mckinsey and Co, India. An expert panel then convened and shared their thoughts and answered questions from the international delegates. The expert panel comprised of Dr. V. Monga, Head Health Services Delhi State, Dr. Shakti Gupta, Head of Administration, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr. Anupam Sibal. Group Medical Director, Apollo Group of Hospitals and Dr. Parvez Ahmed, Executive Director, MAX Health. This session was moderated by Mr. Anwar Feroz and Mr. Haresh Kaneriya. On the morning of the third Mr. Vayalar Ravi, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, said AAPI is in a position to play a leading role in the healthcare arena given its vast expertise and skill set. He added that the government would soon initiate talks with the Medical Council of India and the Indian Medical Association to enable physicians living abroad to practice in India. “Several physicians who have made a mark abroad are willing to return to India and we Continued on page 16 www.aapiusa.org 15
