HARROGATE COLLEGE THREE PEAKS TRAINING/CHALLENGE – 5 & 19 MAY/8-
9 JUNE 2013
As previously discussed and in accordance with the proposed National Three Peaks
Challenge in June 2013 I can confirm The Activities Group (North) Ltd (TAG) will be
delighted to deliver two days of pre challenge training on the 5 th and 19 th May 2013
and guided support for the National Three Peaks Challenge during the weekend of the
8 th and 9 th June 2013.
Terms and Conditions
Equipment and Instruction:
1. Some essential equipment is required in order to realistically attempt the Three
Peaks Challenge. First, each group member should have their own maps, and
be able to read and navigate using these maps.
2. A detailed equipment list is at Annex A.
3. Qualified Instructors will be supplied for all training and execution of the
National Three Peaks Challenge attended by Harrogate College.
4. Instructors will not exceed a ratio of 1:12.
5. All safety equipment which is CEN approved will be supplied by TAG.
6. It is requested that a permanent member of staff be present during the training
and challenge weekend conducted by TAG Ltd.
Location:
7. The locations for the training will be:
a. 5 th May 2013 - North Yorkshire Moors.
b. 19 th May 2013 - Yorkshire Days.
8. Detailed route cards will follow closer to the time of the training.
9. The itinerary for the National Three Peaks is enclosed at Annex B.
Health and Safety:
10. A full introductory HSE brief will take place when you arrive at your first
training session.
11. A Health declaration form is to be completed by all permanent staff and
students prior to attending the first training session. Please find a copy enclosed at
Annex C.
12. First Aid cover will be provided for the duration of the training and challenge
period by TAG staff.
13. Detailed risk assessments for the training and challenge have been conducted
by TAG. A daily risk assessment will be conducted prior to and during all training
and the challenge. A copy of the detailed risk assessments can be obtained by
contacting Spencer McLeod.
14. All students and staff attending the training and the challenge must realise that
this is a physical and demanding event, which obviously has inherent hazards
associated with it.
15. Whilst TAG takes all necessary precautions to try and ensure the safety of all
participants, unfortunately accidents will occur in consequence.
16. Each participant should familiarise themselves with the hazards and try to
minimise these as much as possible by complying with TAG risk management
guidelines.
17. An attendance register should be provided by the course tutor whilst students
are in the care of TAG.
Health and Fitness:
18. To enjoy the Three Peaks, you need to be fitter than most. For some, this'll
mean continuing a steady, regular fitness routine, but for others this may mean
some quite large changes. Do just half an hour a day, gradually stepping it up until
you can run a mile or two. In the actual challenge you shouldn't need to do any
running, but you'll be doing a lot of walking.
Food:
19. Food is worth planning well. Ideally you don't want to eat junk food from
service stations - it'll cost loads more, and it's not going to give you as much long
lasting energy as some healthy snacks. Go for wholegrain and wholemeal foods, as
these carbohydrates provide energy for longer. Advice can be obtained from
Spencer McLeod should you need to clarify the type of food appropriate for your
training and challenge days.
Insurance:
20. Adventure Activity Liability insurance with Zurich Insurance PLC (Certificate
No.127/7SO1/JB678085/4)) is provided by TAG a copy of the insurance certificate
can be obtained by contacting Spencer McLeod.
Cancellation of Activities:
21. TAG requires three weeks’ notice in writing should the training or challenge
need to be cancelled. If sufficient notice is not given TAG reserve the right to
charge for the training and challenge in full.
Costs:
22. The total cost for the training days and challenge weekend is £1,000.00
including VAT. Could you please arrange for this to be paid prior to the challenge
weekend date.
Transport:
23. It is requested that Harrogate College provide a 17 seater minibus for the
training days and National Three Peaks Challenge.
Social Media/Blog Posts:
24. To help with publicising this fantastic challenge TAG will be posting regular
bulletins on our company Facebook/Twitter sites along with a dedicated website
page. It would be advantageous if Harrogate College could reciprocate a similar
amount of social media exposure along with any other marketing activity to support
this worthwhile challenge.
Summary:
If you have any questions regarding any of the above terms and conditions or if TAG
can help in other areas regarding activity programs please do not hesitate to contact
me on the above numbers and I will be happy to assist you.
Yours sincerely,
ITINERARY
ANNEX B TO
HC/NTPC JUNE 13
Timings on the day
Typically, you should allow the following times for each mountain:

Five hours for Ben Nevis
Four hours for Scafell Pike, from Wasdale Head.
Four hours for Snowdon
These times are steady - for example, Snowdon would be completed comfortably by most people in five
hours. A good pace is needed, without wearing out too early.
Add to those estimates approximately eleven hours driving - any faster and we would be breaking speed
limits and making the climbing too easy, which isn't the idea of the Challenge.
Ben Nevis is climbed in the evening, then all students can have a six hour sleep while being driven to
Scafell Pike. This also maximises walking hours in daylight, so navigation should be relatively easy.
Finish Scafell Pike and start drive to Snowdon (five hour drive).
Arrive and start climbing Snowdon.
Finish Snowdon, and complete challenge.
