This booklet explains what <strong>Registered</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Landlords</strong> (usually<br />
known as Housing Associations) are and their contact details.<br />
Also given are details of the properties that they have within the<br />
<strong>South</strong> <strong>Derbyshire</strong> area. Some of the <strong>Registered</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Landlords</strong><br />
listed do not have properties within the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Derbyshire</strong> area<br />
but do have properties across the border.<br />
What are <strong>Registered</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Landlords</strong>?<br />
<strong>Registered</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Landlords</strong> (RSL’s) are landlords who provide<br />
affordable accommodation for rent and/or sale. The way they<br />
operate is governed by a government body called the Housing<br />
Corporation.<br />
What accommodation do they provide?<br />
Most <strong>Registered</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Landlords</strong> have rented accommodation, this<br />
may be flats, houses, shared houses, bungalows, bedsits and others.<br />
As well as rented accommodation some offer affordable home<br />
ownership, home - buy and shared ownership schemes.<br />
How do I apply?<br />
You can apply directly to the <strong>Registered</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Landlords</strong> by<br />
completing their housing application form. This can be obtained by<br />
contacting the <strong>Registered</strong> <strong>Social</strong> Landlord direct. In some cases you<br />
may need to be on or have applied to be on the <strong>Council</strong>’s housing<br />
register, please check this with the RSL you are contacting.<br />
You can therefore be on both the council housing register and<br />
<strong>Registered</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Landlords</strong> housing register. The council are able<br />
to nominate people from their register to the registered social<br />
landlords that have properties within the <strong>South</strong> <strong>Derbyshire</strong> <strong>District</strong><br />
<strong>Council</strong> area. However even if we nominate you to the registered<br />
social landlord to be rehoused we can not force them to house you,<br />
they have the final say on who they let their property to.<br />

Will I have to wait a long time for registered social landlords<br />
accommodation?<br />
It is likely that most <strong>Registered</strong> <strong>Social</strong> <strong>Landlords</strong> will have long<br />
waiting lists. In some cases if they think they won’t be able to help<br />
you within a reasonable length of time they will not put you on their<br />
housing register. Other Smaller landlords don’t have a register but<br />
ask the council or other organisations to nominate someone when<br />
one of their properties become vacant.<br />
